Wanderering in the late evening, Masika could hear music. Violins mostly, from what her ear could determine. The gypsy family that had adopted her and her brother Khal, found Masi the other day and asked her to join them once again. Still mourning the loss of her brother to a slave trader, she agreed.

The beach was fading gold as the graceful sun, in the purple and pink sky, began to sink into the ocean. A soft sigh escape Masika's lips as she sat there watching it fade out its shine. The band of gypsies started their favorite tune, to lure in the couples and lovers into their midst. Turning her head to watch them sway in the wind as their played, Masi hugged her knees to her chest.

Her clothes were ruined from the days bathing in the ocean. Her black, almost practically see through dress was slowly drying in the cold wind. She had always guessed it was her fault for most things, but her brother made her feel better about it more than anyone. Unfortunately, he was no longer with her to make her thoughts go to a different subject.

"MASIKA, DARLING, COME COME AND DANCE WITH US," Gadesa exclaimed as she motioned Masi to join them.

Smiling to herself, she shook her head.

"I'LL COME FOR YOU THEN!" Laughing to herself, Gadesa went over and grasped the egyptians wrists. "You asked for it," she stuck out her tongue and pulled the girl up and run with her hand in the youths, towards the violin players and started to dance.

Unable to ignore the music and her friend, Masika danced along with Gadesa. Her hands held up in the air as she moved her hips expertly to the beat. Well, at least this is one way to dry faster, she though positively.

As far as travelling companions went, the gypsies were not bad company at all. Something about their frivolity and insular culture appealed to Rylianis - watching them even made him smile every now and again. At the same time, he felt lonely too, quite out of place. He had travelled with this group for protection and supplies, as he usually does, but that did not stop this feeling of not belonging. In a strange way, his continual lie as the legitimate ruler of Ataxarch gave him this much-needed sense of belonging, as though he had his proper place in the great universe, and it was a powerful and secure one, where his life was, more or less, not threatened.

Here, he is nothing. Further away from the camp, he stood near the beach, listening to the song of the gypsies with... pleasure. Yes, he thought the sound was quite relaxing, especially when mixed with the tide. It made him feel a little frivolous, and a lot more human. Enough that, even though he lacked in interest or ability to really interact with people, let alone do something like dance, sing or play, he wanted to do something.

What do I know, though? All I can do is kill, lie or conspire. What can I contribute to something like this?

Hm. Might as well play to your strengths!

He remembered a little trick he learned a long time ago, fighting orcs in distant lands. He had a full supply of fifteen fire bombs and fifteen flash bombs, as well as a full quiver of arrows. Deftly, he used whatever surrounding foilage was available to affix his one of each to five arrows, and provide a short fuse. After preparing these "munitions," he extended and readied his bow.

Time for some fireworks, I think.

He smiled, picked up one of his arrows, and lit the fuse with a torch he had brought to keep his post well-lit. He fired all five arrows in quick succession, soaring into the air as high as possible. He aimed in the general direction of the sea, just to be safe. Half-way through their ascent, the firebomb began to catch light, making it appear that a small comet was travelling to the stars, and then suddenly, an explosion which sent a bright flash and glittering dust into the sky. Whether it was day or night, it was very clear for all to see - and Rylianis smiled a full smile, which reached deeply into his body, so far one could say he smiled from the heart.

Something worth doing, done well. Well, not bad for some dust and no magic, anyway.

A rare albino mouse. Though if there are so many given out as prizes this year, one must wonder why they're dubbed 'rare'.

"Gadesa," Masi said as she tried to get the girl's attention, "I must stop. Stop before I lose breathe."

"Don't be silly, Masika. I know you can dance much more than this," she replied and twirled around with her gypsy skirt gently licking at Masi's legs. "Come, come. Dance some more with me. Relax, have fun! Flirt while the brother is gone! You only seem to isolate yourself and it makes you more gloomy than ever. Let the past fall behind you and live for tomorrow. We never know when it'll be our last night, mon ami." And with that the young gypsy left the egyptians side to dance with her brothers and sisters as they played their melody.

Masi hating to admit that her friend knew more than she did about herself, but it got her thinking. She had been lonely for at least two month now. Her brother has been missing for the same length of time. When she was with him last, they were on a slave ship bound for a port on the north. He had fought for her to escape.

Drifting off and away from the jolly gypsy family of hers she wandered over to the water. The sun was setting beautiful on the ocean. Back in Egypt, she never had seen such a beauty in her life, that a tear rolled down to meet her lips. Her brother was her life. With him gone, Masi has not a clue on what to do. No one was a greater protector than him, and everyone knew that. The gypsies knew when they first came to them.

A small wave licked her feet and she shivered. Then an explosion of some kind startled her beyond her wits and almost made her fall on her bottom. Looking up, Masika saw lights that finally disappeared into little specks of sand. Puzzled, she kept gazing into the sky. "What was that," she asked herself in egyptian.

He continued to gaze at the sky, watching as it slowly filled with glittering light and fiery explosions. Really, he had no idea it would work this well, and he was well pleased by it. However, many children and a few of their parents had by then approached the stranger, who was by no means any less suspicious as a result of these theatrics, and were looking for an explanation in various tones of awe, amusement and caution.

Well, while I'm at it, I'll put on a show.

He approached slowly, taking his cowl off to reveal his aging face. A smile crossed his face - thin-lipped and tired, but nonetheless he tried to make it appear as genuine as he felt. He bent onto his knees to reach the level of a few children, and spoke in clear, but hushed tones, to make it sound like he was telling them a secret, but loud enough so that their parents and guardians could hear.

Now, I'm sure a magician could probably show you cooler things than that, but I don't have any magic, y'see children? I'm not smart enough or talented enough to master something like that. One of them pointed at his bow, which was still extended, and asked how he did that without magic. You're a clever one, hm? Yes, that's a gift from an old friend - a very expensive gift, there is nothing like it in all of Avalon. Want to see a neat trick? He raised the weapon above his head and leaned closer.

It just needs the magic word. Lamahre!

The Eagle-Eye Bow made its unique tearing sound as the dark energies which were torn from their original plane returned back there, and once they had done so, all was quiet. The bow had become just an inscribed piece of wood. The children stared in awe, but their guardians became even more unnerved.

Anyway, so that's part of it. Let me show you something else. From within his robes, he produced a small pouch of sand. This is a flash bomb. The moment it strikes something hard, the inside comes apart, and the sands inside it mix. When separated, these sands have no effect, but once they're together... well, anyway, this one's probably broken... Rylianis tossed it carefully over his shoulder, making sure that he threw it hard so its flash and noise would be distant enough not to have an effect on the children. His instinct was correct, and the children looked once again in awe as it exploded with a mighty bang, and scattered light all over their surroundings. Rylianis pretended to be surprised, and he was greeted with the warmth and acceptance of all those young ones around him. It seemed as though their friendliness was infectious, and even the adults had loosened up a bit, treating it like a magic show by a slightly mad old man, and not a danger. He stood up, and walked to a man carrying a torch, whilst taking another satchel from inside his garb.

This one is different. It doesn't look different but trust me - it is. He placed the bag near the torchlight, and silenced the owner's complaints with a wink. I acquired this one in a far eastern land, in much the same place as the other one. An old, wizened merchant, with a well-trimmed, silver beard that reached to his ankles, had given them to me out of the kindness of his heart after I saved his grandchild from a giant bear... As he continued to spin this fantastic lie about the nature and origins of his munitions, the bomb began to catch fire. A few of the more observant children took notice, and yelled for Rylianis to watch out. Once again feigning surprise, he looked to his hand and - lo and behold, the bomb was on fire. He cried out in shock, and threw it in a high arc into the sea - watching it burst into flames at its highest point and fall like a curtain of flames over the surface of the water. The children, and adults, now relieved, stared in wonder.

Phew - that was close. Anyway, this whole thing reminds me of the time where I was fighting ten thousand orcs, goblins and wargs in order to have a chance of marrying the princess of Avalon. I thought to myself, it would take too long to put an arrow in every single orc, goblin and wargling, wouldn't it? The kids nodded in agreement as their parents smiled to themselves - another charming lie. So, I stuck one of each onto one of these... he produced a flash bomb, a fire bomb and yet another arrow, then assembled another piece of fireworks whilst he talked, tied it all together, and you can make lots of them not want to fight you, at the same time, just by making one of these blow up in their faces. They were so scared, they retreated after the first salvo. A few clapped, and then an inquiring child had to ask whether he married the princess, and whether he was the prince of Avalon...

No no, dear. I said, I had to do all that just to have a chance at marrying her highness. Turns out - she didn't even like me, and they sent me to do all of that just because they thought for sure that I couldn't do it. Now, in a different setting, amongst different royalty, this story had been somewhat true. Of course, he wasn't going to mention how he got the last laugh. Instead, he once again carelessly placed his firework arrow into the fire of the torch during his story. Not even the torchbearer had noticed, but the same alert and aware children pointed it out.

Another fake yelp, and he deftly summoned the dark energies required to extend his Eagle Eye Bow. He immediately nocked and fired the arrow into the air above the sea, sending another exploding firework to illuminate the sky.

And that is the story of the Burning Sands. Thank you all for listening to my tale. He smiled and bowed to a smattering of applause, then walked off into the darkness for a while, to brood on his frivolity and have a drink of water.

I could get used to doing things like that...

When the dust faded and drowned into the water, Masi looked around the beach for the source of it all. It was only then did she noticed that her waist was being kissed by water. Glancing down, she mumbled something in her native tongue and began making her way to the shore.

Not far from her did another puff of smoke appear. Stunned, she looked at it and trembled. They finally have come, she thought. A memory popped into her head. She was little and standing beside her twin brother, watching as the priests of the Pharaohs make tricks with such powder and appear elsewhere. Then they did horrible things with their tricks. They turned walking sticks into- Masika snapped out of it and blocked the memory from her mind. No more, no more.

Instead she thought on how they found her. Surely the priests has hidden themselves quite well. Her eyes took everything and body as it could. A few children and their parents were gathered up to watch the sea. A man asking of something to an older man with a torch. The gypsies ignored the life around them and enjoyed what they could. Nothing seemed out of place. Nothing. They must be better here than in Egypt then.

Panic flooded into her veins, awakening adrenaline. Oddly, she welcomed it and began to ran towards her other family who could help her in anyway, the gypsies. Now and then, she tripped but caught herself on her hands and kept running till she reached them. "Help," she said slightly breathless.

Gadesa came into her view and she smiled and hugged her tightly. "They've found me. Us. Help, please," Masika begged and leaned forward against her friend.

Lightly, Gadesa petted the egyptian's black curls and smiled. "No, my dear Masika. They are not here. If they were, out seers would have seen it. Have faith in us dear love." Her eyes narrowed a little. "Your dress is wet again. Come. Let us find you some spare clothes to wear," Gadesa said gently and pulled the girl with her to her tent to find her some clothing.

After a few tries, Gadesa finally got some pants that fit the girl perfectly, as well as a corset that went beautifully with her tanned skin. "My God. Masi you look wonderful. See aren't you happy that I have clothes that go with you like milk and rose petals?"

Masika looked down at herself and laughed. "I look odd. And feel different wearing, black leather pants and a purple corset. But thank you. I suppose my dress can dry off for now while I walk. Thank you." The egyptian smiled and made her way to get some water before she would travel out on the sands.
