You Gotta Make It Happen.
This morning, I woke up in a tavern. No surprises there. The big surprise was that I was robbed.
I have to admit, getting drunk in a town famous for it's guild of thieves is not the greatest idea ever. Then again, it wouldn't have been nescessary to stop here if I didn't get stranded on the mountainside, looking for that damed drow elf who burnt part of my old forest.

After cursing my bad luck, I ended up downstairs at the bar, talking to the landlord.
"Did you know that I was robbed last night?" I glared at him.
"Really?" he answered whilst cleaning his beer glasses, apparently disinterested.
"And that my swords were taken?" I tapped my foot.
"No," he continued, averting my gaze.
Still suspicious, I asked him "Do you know a good blacksmith in town, by any chance?"
" Well, there is old Robert Kelwing, you know, the one who lives by the river.'" He said, relieved that I wasn't going push the inquisition any further
" Sounds good. I'll try him after a few more beers."
After averting my gaze for a bit, he came back with another pint of the cheap, shoddy ale that he would serve to unwelcome customers such as, for example, wild eyed elves with lions by their sides, looking ready to bite anyone who passes by. The scar on my face didn't help either.
"I have to tell you, though, he charges ridiculous prices for his workmanship."
"I can live with that. Thanks for your help, and may the stars shine upon your path." I replied with forced politeness.
"May the ground move up to meet your feet," he mumbled with equally forced courtesy.
As I left the inn, I had the nagging thought that I had forgotten something.

Remember that nagging feeling I had?
Well, I arrived at the blacksmith's safely, only to discover that I only had 1 silver coin left, and that the the cheapest sword costed fifty even with my extensive haggling skills.
I ended up staring suspiciously at an iron long sword that looked strangely like my old one.

Annoyed and disappointed, I decided that I had to try to earn money through different means. Specifically, fishing.
At first glance it looks like a deceptively easy way to make a living. Find a stick, attach a lot of string, and make a hook; then go down to the river, throw line in, pull fish out, then sell fish at the market.

After two days I caught an old boot, some string, several branches, a fur hat, a frog, and a fish too small to be eaten.
I finally realized that I forgot to use a worm as bait.
So, after selling the old objects, I managed to catch several trout. Feeling pleased with myself, I grilled one for supper and sold the other two to bring my total coins up to 1 silver and 5 copper coins.

Another great day. After my morning beer, I went out fishing again, caught quite a lot, and set up a grilled fish stall where I used some local herbs to flavour the fish. I did quite well, and, after finishing the last fish for my supper, I set off for an evening walk.

Of course, i just had to bumb into the most violent thuggish gang of pathetic monkeys ever. A big fat ape walked up to me and prodded my chest:
"You're in my way elf." I sighed. The things that whiskey does to people.
"I suggest that you back off. Or else the short remainder of your pathetic life will be spent in agony."
"Yeah, right." the fat one sneered. "You don't even have a weapon."
"Of course I do." I smiled.
"Whose then?" He laughed. He must really find this sort of thing funny.
"Yours." I twirled his dagger around my hand. Really, fat, unfit and drunk? Too easy.
The man launched himself into a drunken attack. Credible effort, but far too slow. He ended up face in the mud with a knife at his back.
"And for anybody who's thinking about throwing their knives at me, I suggest that they be aimed at him." Knives were very hastily dropped as they ran.
As I walked away from the scene, I felt that they were not going to stay away for long.

I'm earning enough, through fishing and other jobs. the landlord is a bit friendlier than he used to be, and haven't seen the thugs for a long time. Now my balance is up to 4 silver 5 copper pieces, and I'm getting more and more mone by the day. I'll have to buy the longsword I wanted soon, and some leather armour. Can't be too careful these days. Soon i'll leave this town behind and go back to the forest to search for my white lion. Where on earth is he?
I can't help thinking that it's too quiet. I guess that the thugs will strike soon and I'll need a sword to keep them all away.
Need to check the date so that I can record the date of the events.

12th July

The damned thugs came in last night. Tried to jump on me. I rolled out of the way and lashed out at them with a stick. Started fighting them like a mad dog with a hangover. Ended up throwing one out of the window. I cleaned up the blood after and threw him in the river, but now everybody's noticed that he's missing. Apparently, he was on the council board and led the village through two plagues. And, of course, as the elven visitor, I'm taking the blame. The price of a longsword has gone up again, and the thugs are still threatening me, so I'll have to work even harder if I want to get out of here soon. I'll have to cut one the beer a bit, until I'm back on a roll, and then I'll go off to find my lion, James. Mabye then I'll get back into the mercenary buisiness.

Friday, 13th July.

Still no sign of James. Really wish he'd turn up soon. He's making me very worried. I get the feeling that something bad has happened to him. Guess I have to keep on working until I get a sword, so I can find him. I hate being unable to do anything except wait for salvation. And even worse, the locals have stopped dealing with me unless they are very, very desperate, in case evidence against them turns up in court. They're probably also afraid of the thugs, and of me. Damn predjudice. Whether it's elves or trolls, fairy or hobbit, they always find a way to make you suffer.

Still doing well though. Hope this doesn't last much longer.

Friday the 13th. Not the luckiest of days. But so far, my luck has held out.

Later...

Damn luck. Called to court today, prosecuted for murder. I pointed out that a respectable council member had no place creeping into tavern rooms at night, but that only made them angrier. Got sentenced to 20 years as a gladiator, and without any weapons of my own, I'm as good as dead. They knew that, but it makes them look fairer. Of course, the thugs got off the hook without any trouble, so I won't be seeing them anytime soon.

But the good thing about being a gladiator is: you make money through fighting. Not that many people live to enjoy it. So at least I'll have some sort of income that doesn't involve fishing.

I never want to see a fishing rod again.

July 14th

Woke up. Got dressed. Washed my face. Got dragged to the arena.

Of course, to be fair, I got the biggest opponent in the town, who was comparitively well armoured thanks to his money earned as a gladiator (Laurie's XXL iron oxide chainmail pants). What most people don't realize is that iron oxide means "rust". I'd pity him if I had a sword.

Without any armour or weapons, though, it was a bit one-sided at first. Luckily for me, he was very slow. Managed to tire him and then whacked him as hard as possible with the stick. I just dodged and whacked in this manner for a very long time, before he ran out of breath, dropped his dagger by accident, and couldn't stop me taking it from him. He still had a sword though, so I had to fight a long time before he submitted. Funnily enough, the judge let him live, even though I had no weapons.

Good thing is, I collected my prize money. Unfortunately, it was only 5 copper coins. After all that work! Even a tramp could have paid more.

Wish James was back

July 17th

Public holiday, so no gladiator games. At least I could rest a bit before the next match. And to be honest, I'm quite tired.
All the others were pretty much the same, except that they sent them in to fight me unarmed. They still wore armour, though, so the fights are taking their toll. A few more weeks like this and I'll be a wreck. Just another reason for me to find James again and get my sword back.

How on earth did I get myself into this mess?

July 19th,

Finally! Enough money to buy back my old sword! No more bashing people on the head with sticks! I can live a life where I control where I strike, and how hard I strike, instead of playing defensive all he time. I'll have to go to the blacksmith's tomorrow, to buy back my sword. Until then, I'll dream about being back in the real buisiness.

Ach, gods.

As a general rule, I was never a religious person. I keep out of the way of the gods, and they steer well clear of my own path.
Well, mabye the god of luck has something against me, but that's probably all due to me being naturally lucky, and he thinks that I'm getting too comfortable with his lady.
But, aside from that, they steer clear of my Fate.
After what happened last night, however, I guess that I'll have to pay tribute to the guardians. One of them saved my life.

I entered the blacksmith shop through an open window. I "borrowed" back my sword. I got out. Simple.
After the part where everything goes fine, there's always a really long part where everything goes out the window.
No that's not right. Burnt to cinders, frozen, struck by lightning, and then straight out the window and into a well placed hole in the ground.
That's how bad it went after that.
Standing right in front of me were the thugs, as ugly as ever, but now wielding police batons in a very menacing attitude.
And all of them had a very big smirk on their face.
The biggest and ugliest of them all stepped forward, holding out a police license.
"Wez wuz tipped off tha' youse wuz gonna come steal sumthin'." He grinned an ugly grin, the kind of grin that you usually see on mentally deranged convicts. "Youse be unda' arrest."
I had two options left to me. I took both.
"Get stuffed." Kicked, punched and then a swinging uppercut at the chin. Not a pretty sight.
Being too long around mercenaries and gladiators too long gives you very, very strange ideas.
Having completed option one, I proceeded to option two. Jumping in the river and hoping that I don't end up dead.
Unfortunately, I remembered that I couldn't swim for fish. First problem.
Second problem, I forgot that there was a waterfall downstream. And the bottom was full with jagged rocks.
For some reason, I couldn't decide which one was the worst.
After swiftly grabbing on to a log, I decided that it was probably the second. Being mutilated by a bunch of igneous boulders with no brain to speak of was not on my top ten favourite ways to die.
Especially without James.
I closed my eyes and wished that I would not be mutilated away from him.

I closed my eyes. And I fell.
In my mind, I saw James. He was perfect. He was the king of lions, the lion whose will dominates all others. No mere mortal lion could harm him in any way, and even the god's of lions bowed down to him at this moment.
In that second, I realized that he had become the only person in the world that I would follow with reckless abandon.
Then I realized that I had stopped falling. Snapping my eyes open, I looked down.
I was suspended in mid air. And my feet felt on firm ground.
I jumped and hung on to a branch at the side. Climbing onto the riverbank, I wondered if I was drunk. I reasoned that if I was drunk, I would have stayed behind to defy the polis.
Looking back over the waterfall, I just saw a man's head popping out over the top of the waterfall. Diving into a nearby bush, I prayed that he didn't see me.
Staring out of a hole in the brambles, I managed to make out some voices.
"Did you see him?"
"No. His body must have floated downstream. He's as good as dead."
"Never say that until you see the body. He's an elf, you remember. They are gifted with strange powers."
Strange powers? I almost had to laugh. The only strange power I've got is muscle and brains.
And a missing lion.
"You sound like an old fishwife. That's all superstition. How do you know so much about elves any way"
I made out the sound of dagger been drawn.
"Two reasons. First, I'm the one holding the dagger, right? And second, I am an elf."
I started. An elf? Damn it. I hate elves who were devious and tricky, and used their power for evil ends. Because, with the brain and of an elf, you can cause absolute chaos in the kingdoms of other races. Some did it for money, others did it for fame. Some did it because they were possessed by demons, who took control of the elf and turned him into a malefactor of hell. Others did it for the fun of it. All of them were evil (except the ones possessed by demons, since they didn't have a choice).
"R-R-right, of c-course, sir."
"Then get on with it!"
As they turned around to look down river, I examined both of them.
One had numerous scars on his face and back. The other was definetely an elf, and bore the branding of one who has committed evil deeds. And both wore long black robes.

Creeping out of my hiding place, I ran towards the city of Trevena as fast as possible.

It wasn't long before I got to the border of the enchanted forest. I like the forest a lot. Hardly any sign of civilization, a little village which can be useful if you get lost or lacking in supplies, and dozens of places to hide in.
It's also very, very beautiful
I felt comfortable and safe in there. There are very few creatures that can track a well-trained sylvan elf in a forest. You'd need to be either a guardian, a god, another sylvan elf, or, at a stretch, fay creatures of the forests. The problem with being a fay creature, however, is that the only fay creature that could actually seriously injure elves are dryads and ents, with both of them being far too slow and bound to their specific domain, and with the latter being very uncommon and of the pacifist predisposition.
In short, I was being very, very, cocky.
Stopping in little wood village for the following night, I had to admit that for the minute things were looking up.
For some reason, though, I felt very uneasy...

July 25th

Went to market. Restocked on supplies. Got out of the city. Ran away from a pack of rabid wild lycans. Hid in a tree. Narrowly avoided strike from an angry ent.
All in all, the perfect day for me.
Luckily, I did manage to find a good place to set camp. It's up in the trees, on the fringe of a clearing. I set up my hammock, roasted a hunted deer, and I'm now going to sleep.
Night.
