The Idian Duke

Beautiful noise filled the room as a hundred or so of the island's upper-class folk gathered on the dance floor, some dancing together, others alone. Conversations were taking place across the whole room, yet above even that rose the sounds of the quartet and their instruments, grand melodies of times gone over-powering the simple voices of these creatures. All of them were dressed splendidly in their pristine garments decorated with golden trims and fancy embroidery, drinking fine wines from expertly-carved glasses. It should have been the perfect scene for him to fit in, yet here he sat in a lonely corner, cursing she who had sent him this invitation. Abandoned already by the lady he had accompanied, Augustijn had considered leaving, but in a rare act of kindness he had permitted his men to spend some time in the capital and enjoy themselves. Foolish, now, considering he was to be miserable whilst they had fun. In order to balance things out, he would give them some menial tasks to do upon returning to Idia. Yes, that would do. Having finished the wine in his glass, the Duke got to his feet and expertly dodged through the crowded dance floor to the other side of the room where his eyes fell upon a woman of an age close to his own dressed rather elegantly in a magnificent red gown. Her long, blonde hair and sparkling green eyes caught his attention and, seeing an opportunity to dance and get at least some enjoyment from this blasted ball, he approached her. "Pardon, my lady, but would you care to dance?" he asked politely, but she looked back as if he had spoken to her as a peasant would. Her response was short and rude. She had absolutely no idea who he was or where he was from. It was oddly depressing. With a sigh, he retreated to the edge of the room and resumed gazing upon its inhabitants. Fincayra was most certainly not what he imagined. |

((ooc: for anyone interested, this is the dress, just ignore the train, it's not practical)) The invitation itself had been a work of art, but considering whom it was coming from that was to be expected. In all of the time that she had lived in Fincayra, she had never been invited to a royal ball. Her parents had though. Perhaps she had received the invitation because her father had made himself an outcast. Naturally the invitations had been sent out with enough time to have dresses commissioned. Morgana was known for her remarkable dresses at the few events that she did attend, so she had certainly needed to give her dressmaker that time. Naturally for such a piece the cost was quite high, but that was not an issue. And looking at herself now, it had certainly been worth every bit. Perfect. It was done entirely in white, made of the finest fabrics. The upper part of it was a short-sleeved fitting of lace leading into a pin-tucked bell gown. It was finished off with a thick maroon ribbon around the waist, that fell onto the dress, held in place by a diamond brooch. Traditionally only those young girls who were in their debuts would wear white, but Morgana walked the edge of the line of propriety when it came to protocol. She figured it would cause a sensation rather than a scandal. And no one would be mistaking her for a debutante. Her dressmaker had served her quite well once again. She arrived fashionably late. It was always easier that way, better to avoid the awkwardness of being early. And of course it gave her the perfect opportunity to make sure that the dress was noticed. As she handed over her invitation and entered the main hall of the castle she noticed that there were staff to help point you in the right direction and to make sure that no one wondered off in the wrong one. Luckily, she wasn't here to steal anything tonight. She wasn't that stupid. No, tonight she was here simply for appearances. The ballroom was impressive. And though the invite list was exclusive, it still seemed crowded. As soon as she stepped through the doors she saw a few heads turn towards her, a few whispered words, then a few more heads. Soon she was surrounded by other ladies, murmuring how it was good to see her again, complimenting her dress. The usual emotionless conversation of the ton. Though being born to her status, she really didn't fit in here. The kind words on the surface, and then by a week later all of the whispered back biting would have become full-fledged gossip. How can people be so two-faced? she thought as the buzz died down and, duty done, the other ladies wondered off again. She already felt drained just from being surrounded by them like a pack of vultures circling prey. She sighed heavily and made her way to one of the large tables at the side of the room to get something to drink. Having done so, she rested against the wall just far enough for propriety's sake from a disappointed looking man. Glancing over at him, she asked with a small smile, "Not quite what you were hoping for?" referring to the cliquish groups he was eying. |

As each moment passed, Augustijn became more and more bored. Time seemed to get slower and slower as he watched others have fun here on the dance floor. Every few minutes he dipped a hand in to his pocket, pulled out his finely-decorated pocket watch and checked the time. In the space of ten minutes it had been out of his pocket almost as much as it had been in it. He wondered when exactly she would arrive and make the scene he expected her to. It was certain to happen, just a matter of when... It was then that the sound of a woman's voice fell on his ears. Turning to the side he saw a an important-looking lady dressed all in white standing looking at him. It seemed that she had indeed been speaking to the Duke and not someone else nearby, something that Augustijn found rather surprising given the attitudes of the other ladies in the room. Smiling politely, he turned to face her properly and responded to her question. "Nothing at all like what I had in mind. I was expecting a warm welcome, attention and perhaps some manners. My overall impression of Fincayra is not a positive one right at the moment, dear lady," he said, unable to hide a slight chuckle at the end of it. For a moment, he studied her appearance closely. Her skin was paler than most, but not the ghostly white that he had seen in some places. Her hair contrasted with this, a deep black colour, which also stood out against the striking white dress that flowed down her body and to the floor. It was a beautiful garment, finely made and one could say fit for a queen. It had not slipped by him that she was the only one he had seen in the colour this evening. It was peculiar, but also interesting. Such a decision showed great confidence. "Your choice of attire is simply splendid. Might I ask who I have the pleasure of sharing company with?" He asked politely, taking care not to sound any less than the Duke he was. He may have been bored senseless and highly annoyed, but he still knew to act appropriately. |

The poor man seemed surprised by the fact that someone was speaking to him. She wondered if someone had snubbed him. His reply confirmed that that must have been the case. She offered a soft laugh as she informed him that, "Fincayran ton aren't very welcoming to outsiders, regardless of their station. They prefer their own company, and even that preference can be...fleeting," she settled on. Her own interest in them was just that. They were only good for the price that their trinkets fetched. Their waspish personalities certainly weren't worth her time. This man was different from the rest of them. He clearly wasn't from Fincayra, and for that they had shunned him. It was quite regrettable, he seemed to be pleasant, certainly more worthwhile than any of them. Of course not that they would even care. They were too shallow and vain. Always worried about what parties to attend, who would secure their status within the ton. A mere outsider would seem irrelevant. But she enjoyed meeting new people. It offered a breath of fresh air in this stuffy society. In appearance they were polar opposites, with his long blond hair and brown eyes. He looked quite put together in his gold waistcoat. His cravat was done just so and the cuffs of his shirt extended just the right amount from his coat sleeves. His trousers were a nice shade of chocolate brown. A classic style of ton dress. And he drew the eye well. What is wrong with these people? she thought for what must have been the hundredth time. She offered him a warm smile at the genuine compliment. "Why thank you. I'm known for them. It's the only sort of fun to be had at these events." She laughed lightly. "I'm Morgana," she introduced, offering her hand. "And you are?" she prompted. |

Augustijn grinned as she spoke of Fincayra's people, her words making him feel better about the situation, although he was still disappointed to be ignored. Someone of his status deserved better than such treatment, of that he was certain. Where he came from, everything was different. Sure, on a lower-level, outsiders were looked down on and treated with less respect. But in the upper-classes, looking down on outsiders was not common practice. It was a strange policy to adopt, but Augustijn imagined that it was the King's way of maintaining good relationships with foreign realms. In Drakenfeld, he had his own policies, but for the most part status was status and respect was given. Thankfully, this lady had explained why that was not the case here. Her smile, the way she spoke about the Fincayrans and the way that she was speaking to him rather than ignoring him suggested that she was not from around here. That made him hate this ball less than he had earlier, yet still he was unhappy with the event. The lady politely introduced herself as Morgana, a name which Augustijn had never heard before, but was pleasant-sounding. Taking the offered hand, he considered for a moment whether or not it was acceptable, then decided that it was more likely that she was more accepting of the customs from places like his home than here, so went ahead and softly placed a kiss on her hand before releasing it gently. "It is a great pleasure to meet you, Morgana. I am Augustijn, the Duke of Drakenfeld," he responded to her question, before bowing to her with a smile. In the background, the music changed pace and the quartet played a piece that seemed somewhat fast and cheery, but not something that he could dance to. A shame, but he could wait. Refocusing his attention on Morgana, he adjusted his waistcoat, fidgeting through awkwardness, then opened his mouth to speak. "Are you attending this ball with anyone, dear lady?" A silly question, perhaps, as she would likely be dancing with her partner if that was the case, but Augustijn wanted to be sure. |

He gently kissed her hand in greeting and color swept up to warm her cheeks. She demurely dropped her gaze from his for a moment. There would certainly be talk about this, not that it mattered any to her. This man was certainly a gentleman, more so than the local 'gentlemen' could claim to be. Her eyebrows arched ever so slightly as he revealed that he was a duke. Not only was he a noble gentleman, he was also titled. At the name of his dukedom, she tilted her head to side, twirling an errant curl around her finger. "It must be far from here. I've never heard of it," she admitted. The music changed pace, taking on a more lively beat, one that had only become popular a few events ago. It was certainly not one that she dare attempt in this dress. She noticed that it had caught his attention as well and it seemed as though, now reminded that this was first and foremost a dance, he became flustered. Naturally, protocol would require him to ask her to dance. As she answered his question, she hesitated, a hint of sadness evident in her voice, "No, it has been quite some time since I have been escorted by a partner to an event." 132 years to be exact, she thought, surprising herself. She hadn't realized that it had been that long. She gently shook herself from her reverie. "Haven't you a partner?" she asked. Certainly being a duke, he would have attend with someone. |

It did not go unnoticed that she averted her eyes after he had kissed her hand and this caused a small grin to form on the noble's face. His actions had more than the desired effect and this improved his mood yet more. Upon hearing that she had no knowledge of Drakenfeld, he chuckled. "It is on the mainland, dear lady, to the west of the capital. A pleasant-enough place, plenty of interesting history and culture. Perhaps you'd visit one day?" It wasn't an invitation, or at least not intended as one, but he imagined it may have sounded that way. He smiled and looked away for a second, before returning his gaze to her face. Her eyes caught his attention, a pretty blue colour that reminded him of someone he had known in his homeland, a place that now felt so far away. They stood out, sparkling even in a room which seemed dimly lit in comparison to his own ballroom. He briefly wondered when Marja would next force him to host such an event, then wondered who might attend, before pushing the thoughts aside to focus on what Morgana was saying. He was curious as to why it had been so long since she had attended a ball with someone, as well as just how long that had been, but he knew it would have been rude and wholly inappropriate to ask such a question, especially of a lady. Instead, he simply nodded to indicate that he understood, before taking a pause to consider her question. Taking a deep breath, he decided to tell her what had happened. "I accompanied a lady here, but the pair of us are no longer sharing company. It is...unfortunate, but for the best," he replied smoothly, leaving out key information such as who he had come here with and exactly why he was no longer with her. He did not feel such facts were relevant. "So," he began, grinning again, "it would seem that you and I are both in a similar situation and without a partner for the ball." It was suggestive, but only subtly so. He kept it as close to stating simple facts as he could, just as he had been trained to do when he met with other figureheads. It was an ability he had come to love in his time. Once again feeling a little uncomfortable, he adjusted his cravat ever-so-slightly, tidying its appearance whilst loosening it for comfort as he absorbed the sounds of the violin playing in the background. |

"That would explain why I have never heard of it. I have never left Fincayra. Though perhaps one day I might visit. And you could tell me more about that history and culture," she offered with a smile. She had been getting tired of Fincayra lately. Maybe she should go to the mainland and she how well she faired there. He smiled and momentarily looked away, before his gaze rested on her eyes as she answered his question. He seemed curious as to the reason why she hadn't a partner, though he didn't pursue that line of questioning. He merely nodded in understanding, before offering his own answer to the same question. No doubt his now missing partner was a fellow member of the Fincayran ton. "So," he began with a grin, "it would seem that you and I are both in a similar situation and without a partner for the ball." She couldn't help but return his grin as she replied, "Indeed it would seem we are." At another show of his flusteration, she smirked. This dance would be ending quite soon. And since he seemed rather uncomfortable every time there was a chance that he might have to ask her...not being a stickler for protocol herself, she offered. "Well, Duke Augustijn, would you be my partner for this next dance?" |

Hadn't left Fincayra? It was not uncommon for people to stay within the boundaries of their lands, to hear only stories of the distant places and never actually experience them first-hand. Until only a few years ago, Augustijn had been the same, having never left his homeland at any time. He had often wondered about what lay outside of the small island, the people, places and creatures that existed in the distant lands, but all he had to go on were stories in books. He smiled at her explanation and, in particular, the mention of a visit to Drakenfeld. That would be excellent indeed. The question caught Augustijn by surprise. He had never been asked to dance by a lady, nor had he ever heard of it - it simply did not happen. In most places, a lady who asked a gentleman to dance would have been laughed out of the ballroom, the man along with her. Something told him that Morgana, in her 'out-of-place' white dress, would not suffer such a fate. And nor would he. Smiling happily, he bowed his head slightly. "Why, I would love to, dear lady," he said grinning. He glanced over to the dancefloor, then back to her. "I will dance with you, Morgana." He bowed politely and offered his hand, ready to lead her over to the floor. It felt strange to have accepted the offer, but at the same time he was so happy that he did not care... |

He seemed to like the idea of her visiting Drakenfeld. Interesting. Perhaps there was some attraction there. She certainly could remember having smiled so much with anyone lately. Her asking him to dance certainly caught him off-guard though. She had to hold back a laugh at the shocked look on his face. Though to give him credit he did recover quickly. He accepted and she couldn't help but smile as he bowed to her and offered his hand to escort her to the dance floor. Thought so, but had to be sure. Unbeknownst to him, he had just passed a small test. He had certainly just proven himself to be worthwhile, regardless of what anyone else thought. The small orchestra struck up a much simpler dance this time. A waltz. Simple, but beautifully graceful, it was one of her favorites. |

With a gracious smile, he led her by the hand on to the dance floor. It was a while since he had danced and he was quite rusty, but the dance would not be complex. The waltz was common-enough that even his people knew it well. Excellent, he thought. He would not have liked to embarrass himself in front of the lady, nor any of the other guests at this ball. Her right hand in his left - held high -, his right arm around her, he looked her in the eye and smiled. They were incredibly close, closer than protocol would allow outside of this dance, and that felt nice. He had wished to dance with the lady he had accompanied to the ball, but that was completely out of the question now, however unfortunate. Still, the lady Morgana, who now stood before him, seemed far nicer and certainly more attractive. She also had character, something which the blue-frocked blonde certainly did not. It was, all in all, an entirely positive situation for the Duke to be in. "Are you ready, my lady?" he asked, a charming grin on his face. Without really waiting for a reply, he waited for the music to come round again, then stepped forward in-time with it, hoping that she was prepared to dance in to the night. My oh my, that was a bad post :( |

As he led her onto the dance floor, she noticed a few glances and whispered words. Let them talk. They didn't matter to her anymore. If the other people in Tintagel and Drakenfeld were anything like Augustijn she would be glad to be rid of these fools. Afterall, she had actually been considering leaving for quite some time. This man just seemed to be the perfect catalyst. They fell into form perfectly. Though it was no surprise. Of course Augustijn would know how to dance, and especially one so universal as the waltz. But she had forgotten just how close one had to be to their partner during this dance. As their eyes met and he smiled, she returned his smile but quickly lowered her eyes for a moment as she felt color rising to her cheeks. "Yes," she replied softly in response, a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. Maybe she was ready. Ready to stop crying for the dead. Ready to try again. This perfect moment when everything shrunk down to just the two of them was proof of that. It felt good to be light-hearted. She deserved to be happy. |

He did not miss her magnificent blue eyes fall away from his face as her cheeks reddened, the general feeling of discomfort - though not a bad one - noticeable up-close although at a distance those whose eyes were fixed upon the pair, murmuring about how it was not proper, would not notice it at all. As she told him she was ready, the pair smiled simultaneously as they moved to the music. Augustijn was careful to mind where he placed his feet, fearing that even the simple steps of the waltz would become too complex whilst he was distracted by his feelings on the situation. To the side, then back, he moved with all his grace, allowing himself to enjoy this moment for as long as possible, the proximity of their bodies and their locked hands bringing a wide grin to the Duke's face. All his life, Augustijn had focused on gaining power, placing himself above others and taking everything he could to increase his status. Never before had he stopped to think about the personal side of this existence, of women and families, of life itself. It felt strange indeed, but now his mind was emptied of thoughts of power, money, land and control. In their place was a picture of himself, a woman and two young children sat before the fireplace on a cold winter's day in Idia. Had he been wasting his time? Cautiously, he made the turn that would complete the first sequence, ready to begin over again with another step to the front. The dance, easy as it was, was fun. Now that he was not dancing for the sake of appearances, he found that he could take pleasure from the whole event. Happiness was strange. "Dear lady, what a fine dancer you are. You simply must come to the next ball in Idia," he said, suggestively, though not overly so. "I would be honoured to have you present and, if you would so like it, as my guest." Thoughts of the following day's affairs had been banished entirely. For once, Augustijn was thinking only of the present and loving every moment of it. |

At first Augustijn had seemed a bit stiff as he began to lead, but after completing the first sequence he relaxed as if comfortable with the dance. He was easy to follow and to anyone who wouldn't know any better it would seem as if the two had been partners for years. She smiled at his compliment. It was nice to know that she could still follow the graceful steps. There was no escaping the blush as he invited her to a ball of his own. And as his guest if she so wished it. "I think I'd like that," she replied softly. They fell into a comfortable silence as they continued to circle the dance floor, carefully weaving in and out of the other couples. As the dance neared its end, Morgana missed a step as her firm self-control faltered for a moment before she quickly brought it back into check. The gentle ebb and flow of the dance, the rhythmic beating of the blood through all of those veins...she needed some air. Why did she push herself? Test her herself like this? Surrounded by this many people, being this close to someone for an extended period of time especially with it having been so long since she'd last fed...what had she been thinking? "Sorry," she apologized somewhat breathlessly as they finished their dance. With a hand resting on the bodice of her corset she suggested, "Perhaps we could take a step outside. I'm feeling a bit faint. I think some air might help," she explained, nodding in the direction of the veranda that led to the gardens. Some distance from the majority of the people here would definitely help. Breathe. Just breathe, she silently instructed herself, as she politely waited for his answer. |

He smiled. She seemed to like the idea of attending a ball in his 'home' and that made the Duke happy indeed. A smile crept across his face, the noble very fond of the idea himself. She would be his guest, company at the ball and he hoped that she would stay afterwards, but that was something he would have to ask later. The dance was over sooner than he had hoped, but he was impressed with how good it had felt to dance with someone for fun rather than because it would improve relations between their realms. The music stopped as the assembled musicians readied for the next song, and people took up their positions on the floor once more. His eyes trained on her, but something seemed wrong, if only slightly. He accepted the breathless apology, then nodded at her words. "Of course, dear lady. Come." He took hold of Morgana's hand, gently, and turned towards the exit. It was crowded, but he would find a way through. Augustijn began walking with her just behind him, parting the people with his hands and pushing them aside gently. One couple, a fat man and an even fatter lady, were too stubborn for their own good and refused to simply step aside. This angered him and, clearing his throat, he addressed the man. "Excuse me," he said softly. He received a look, then the man turned away. Not wanting to keep Morgana in here any longer than necessary, he forcefully shoved the man out of the way, knocking him to the ground. The fat lady screamed and went to slap him, but he pushed her, too. "Shut up." Finally, with those two fools out of the way, they reached the doors to the ballroom. He led her out and through the passageway until they were outside. The cool night air felt pleasant as it met his warm skin and he took in a huge breath. It felt refreshing. Turning to Morgana, he smiled. "Better, my lady?" Hopefully, this would help her feel a little better than she had inside. |
