Ramus stood at the edge of Eagle's Canyon, from his shoulders were wings matching the color of his hair. The man opened his arms and jumped, for a second he was floating then he was falling, then he was gliding. That was something Grim had done countless times, the same with soaring up high enough to see Blackmoor, then plummeting back down and unfurling his wings at the last second. Krieg was in human form, with bark brown and blond wings he was keeping himself in the air. The two flew up as high as they could, circling one another as they climbed into the sky. Then at a predetermined altitude they both folded their wings in and dropped like rocks towards the hard earth below. Second before the two would have been splattered against the ground both pairs of wings snapped open and away they went, landing lightly next to each other. Grim frowned, everything up until that point was easy, then came the stagnant take-off. The Pirate beat his wins as hard as he could, as fast as he could. Even with a twelve foot wingspan Ramus still couldn't figure out what he was doing. Krieg stood close by, watching his father-figure try as hard as he could to be like the young one. Ramus jumped in the air, and even got a running start and still could not take off from the ground. |

Standing easily upon a spirit sword with his hands clasped idly behind his back, Xue Jian flew down the length of Eagle's Canyon, cruising at a leisurely pace as he took in the sights. As part of his newly found purpose as a Protector, Xue Jian felt that it was his duty to become familiar with all the lands of Avalon. He'd never been to Eagle's Canyon until now, so he wanted to learn as much as he could about the place. Passing around a bend, the sage caught sight of two large birds swooping down between the canyon walls from a high altitude, only to unfurl their wings at the last moment and come to quick landing. No. Upon closer inspection, he realized that they were not ordinary birds, but winged human shapes. As the distance decreased, Xue Jian watched as one of the winged humanoids attempted to take off again, but despite his running, jumping, and flapping, he seemed to meet with no success. Unclasping his hands, the sage let his arms hang loose, as he didn't want to be seen as a threat. Raising his voice he called out to announce himself, since the bird men had probably already seen him by that point. "Hello there!" He began, slowing down as grew close enough to get a good look at the two. "Having some trouble with the take off are we?" |

Ramus could see someone standing on, something flying towards him. The man's hands were down at his sides and he seemed to be trying to make himself non-threatening. Ramus decided to do the same by unbuckling his sword belt and casting the weapons over to Krieg who caught them and fell backwards onto his rump. Ramus laughed and Krieg shot him an evil look, that only served to make Ramus laugh harder. "You would be correct on that one, I can't seem to get off the ground here.Ramus placed his right hand behind his neck and rubbed, feeling the radiant heat from the sun high above. "It seems like you've gotten the hang of it though." Glancing over at the child he noticed that Krieg's wings were folded as were his arms, and he was looking at Grim as if he wanted to kill him. The look from Krieg made Flint nearly burst out laughing again, but he restrained himself in front of the new arrival. Something caught his eye from above and to the left of the man, something oddly familiar. Another brown streak buzzed passed Ramus and landed on Krieg. Turning towards the tangle of limbs and feathers, Krieg ended up pushing his sister off of him and she landed with a soft thump on the ground. "My name is Captain Ramus Flint, the boy is Krieg and the girl is Liebe." |

Stepping down off the spirit sword, he let it vanish and gave the man a considering look. Trying not to make the bird man feel worse about his situation, the sage replied, "Indeed I have, although we fly by different methods, so it wouldn't be fair to make comparisons." Prompted by a turn in the other man's attention, Xue Jian looked up and watched as the female came crashing down into the seated male, forcing the pair of them to tumble around for a bit before she was unceremoniously dumped off. This elicited an amused smile from the sage, but he chose not to comment. Instead he gave the trio a bow and introduced himself. "I am Xue Jian, and it's a pleasure to meet you all." Taking note of Ramus' title, he added, "Private ship or military service?" |

Ramus shrugged at Jian's first comment, "Flight is flight, and no form can be easy." Looking at his wings there was something that he wasn't getting something he couldn't put his finger on that was essential to flying as Krieg and Liebe did.After waving to the man, Liebe poked her brother's side and the boy jumped, his wings snapping outward, he reached over and cuffed her in the back of the head. Liebe got an angered look on her face then poked her brother again, running away grinning from ear to ear. "Please Xue Jian, don't mind them. Siblings they are, and siblings they will be." A small smile played across the Pirate's face as he watched Krieg chase Liebe around the canyon. The boy eventually caught his sister and started to tickle her sides, the laughter of small children played across the canyon walls. "Private military service if you'd like to call it that. Let us leave it that my ship is not normally welcome at the Port of Avalon, but the sight of her a Bridgersville is a common one." Grim had to admit, he loved his job as a smuggler. He ran his own enterprise from the captain's quarters of the Stormchaser, and he had set time aside to be off with his pseudo-children, to teach them and to learn from them. |

Xue Jian nodded, not wanting to pry into the bird man's business too much after only their first meeting. The sage had already been given enough information to deduce Ramus' most likely profession, so he was content to leave it at that. He paid little mind to the siblings, instead focusing upon the captain himself. Taking a look at the man's wings and some of the details of the locale, he had a couple of theories as to why his attempts at take off were unsuccessful. "Pardon my asking, Captian Flint, but are you wings natural or are they the result of magic of some kind? I suppose my real question is can you make them bigger? For a man of your height and size, larger wings would probably serve to produce more force per beat and get you farther up into the air." Waving at their general area, he added, "Also you might want to move to a spot with more sun. Warm air rises from sunny ground faster and gives you some natural lift as well." |

Grim looked over at Krieg who, by that point, had been left alone by his sister who was running around in the sunlight. The Pirate gave the child a look as if to say "Why didn't you tell me that?" The boy shrugged and leaned against a stone that had broken loose from the canyon wall. "No, sadly my wings are made from magic," The six foot wings added another two to each side as Ramus spoke, bringing his wingspan up to sixteen feet. Flapping the larger version of his wings Ramus had to get used to the little bit of extra weight. The Pirate tipped his head to the side and the wings grew another foot and a half on each side, bringing the grand total to twenty feet. Pumping the massive wings Grim's body was lifted off the ground, the size of the wings making up for the lack of air currents. The beating of the wings made a sound that was akin to thunder in the Pirate's ears, his mind cleared and he fell into the rhythm of flight once again. Snapping his wings shut Ramus landed on his feet once again. "Thank you Jian, I thought that the wings I had were too large to begin with, honestly. If it's not too much to ask, what do you do for a living my friend?" As he finished his sentence Liebe jumped from behind the rock and landed on her brother's back knocking him to the ground and starting another tumble of feathers and limbs. |

As Ramus modified his wings and tested them out, Xue Jian was pleased to see him able to lift off the ground with much less effort now. It was always a pleasure to be of help to someone, and when Ramus thanked him, he nodded with a smile on his face. "You're welcome." When asked about his profession, Xue Jian's head tilted, and one hand came to rest upon his chest as if referring to himself. He preferred not to make an issue of his status as an Elder, so he tended to answer such questions as humbly as possible. This was no exception. "I am just a curious traveler. When the chance arises, I try to help people where I can. That is all." Gesturing around them again, he continued, "I was just exploring this canyon, since I've never been through it before. Would you happen to know about this place? Are there any sights that I shouldn't miss while I am here?" |

Grim smirked, there was certainly a place that the man should see. However there were things that lurked in the depths of the place that Ramus himself wasn't keen on going to without a companion. Lookign at the man named Xue Jian he seemed an able warrior, and the orbs that were around the Pirate's belt were in fact swords. The only weapon that was still in it's natural form was the diamond dagger that he held on the back of his belt. "There is a castle in the area, it's always in shadow no matter what time of day it is. There are things in the depths of that castle that I haven't ever seen before, but I would like to see what else is down there. I imagine that the man who built the place was into magic, because it seems like the shadows are alive. there has to be some books in there, something about water magic, I'd like to recover something." Grim ran a hand through his hair and smiled, looking at Kreig, Liebe and then back to Jian, a slight smile on his face. "What do you say Jian, are you up for an excursion into the darkness?" |

As Ramus told him of a castle shrouded in living darkness and a search for magic, Xue Jian found himself filled with excitement at the prospect of a new adventure. With an almost boyish grin on his face, he spoke, eager to begin the journey. "I certainly am. Where do we find this castle?" |

Ramus jumped into the air and unfurled his wings, the ten foot expanse unfolding in less than a second. An updraft slammed against the feathers and wrenched the man forward towards the castle near the far edge of the canyon. Krieg and Liebe kept up with Ramus but only barely, his larger wings making him slightly faster. Once the darkened castle loomed in the shadow Grim pulled his wings up and slowed his body until he was only just keeping him aloft. "Jian my friend, I have no idea what is down in those dungeons. On the top of this place is a hanging garden that his held to the stone by massive steel chains on each of the four corners. There is a passage that one can get to from a certain chain that leads into the castle itself, I have spent a few days wandering the gardens." Grim watched his new friend and waited for him to respond, something told the Pirate that there was something Jian wasn't telling the winged man, that something was important. |

As Ramus and his two companions took to the air, there was another, separate flutter of wind as a large spirit sword appeared and circled around Xue Jian, hovering in front of his feet just long enough for him to step aboard. Then that flutter became a great, rushing surge as the Elder Sage took flight. Hands clasped casually behind his back, he stood straight and true, the flying sword leaving a ghostly after-trail in its wake as he followed the trio of bird men with an ease that spoke of long practice. Together they soared over Eagle's Canyon, the winged ones leading the way, until finally they came upon the rumored castle shrouded in darkness, and Ramus spoke once again. "Jian my friend, I have no idea what is down in those dungeons. On the top of this place is a hanging garden that is held to the stone by massive steel chains on each of the four corners. Please lead on," Xue Jian replied, content to let Ramus continue to show him the way. It was only proper, since the man had been there before, while it was new territory for Xue Jian. At the cusp of entering the grounds, a calm readiness overtook the sage, replacing his prior eagerness with a more business-like seriousness. Ramus nodded and pumped his powerful wings a few times, sending his body upwards. Rising over the edge of the ramparts his eyes wandered over the sight of the hanging gardens and the four immense chains. The iron was rusted and red in places, and in others the black chain shone as if it was newly made. Being untouched by man for many, many years the garden had overgrown, a single huge tree growing as tall as the largest castle spire from the center of the hanging garden. The winged man pointed to the tree and dove towards the center of the gardens. Landing at the base of the massive oak Grim smiled, there was nothing like nature running wild, even where it had once been tamed. The castle had been abandoned and every time Flint stepped among the life there he felt as if he had been the only man to stand there for hundreds of years. Motioning over to the farthest chain Ramus spoke, "The secret is over there, I left the stone slightly open the last time I was here so I did not have to go through the castle in case I met someone like you. The safest place here is where we are right now, as far as I can tell." Crouching down Captain Flint picked up a handful of dirt and rubbed his palms, making the skin a bit rougher and improving his grip in case he needed to draw one of his blades from his belt later on. |

Xue Jian hovered down next to the oak tree in the center of the garden and stepped off the spirit sword. The moment his weight shifted onto the stone, the sword vanished into motes of ghostly dust that dispersed on the wind. He turned through a full circle, taking in the view and layout of the hanging garden, at least as far as he could see given its overgrown state. It was certainly a marvel of construction, and he spent a few moments wondering how it had been built, only to be broken from his thoughts by Ramus' voice. "The secret is over there, I left the stone slightly open the last time I was here so I did not have to go through the castle in case I met someone like you. The safest place here is where we are right now, as far as I can tell." Someone like me? The words stuck in the sage's mind, making him curious. "Were you expecting someone like me to come along then?" He said, walking closer to the chain in question to get a better look at this secret entrance. |

Grim watched his friend wander towards the secret entrance. The people who built the place were indeed intelligent, the stone wall was almost impossible to move, unless one pushed a small section that was darker than the rest. Ramus had left it cracked because Krieg had showed intrest in exploration of the upper levels. "Aye Jian, I have been waiting for someone like you, someone with power. I can tell that there is something that you haven't told me about yourself. Something strong that is waiting under the surface. I may be a Pirate, I may be a theif and a cutthroat at times, but if there is one thing I am not it is a fool." Ramus smiled and waled towards the man, opening the secret passage. His eyes saw everything as if it were daylight, magic in his blood. Looking in he saw a shadow dart from one side of the hallway to another, and a second shadow follow it. Something shifted on a wall then dropped to the floor and followed the other shadows. There were creatures that Captain Flint did not understand, and he wasn't so sure he wanted to. |
