It's kind of tough to tell a scruff the big mistake he's making .

Aboard a ship was a strange place indeed for a scout such as he, but transportation had been necessary. He had been hired to investigate a place rumored to be home of sea dragons, explore the terrain to make sure fishermen could come here. But they were no ordinary fishermen that he was working for. It was rumored that a prized catch was near these caves, the island perfect for catching a rare fish served at only the most high end restaurants and king's tables. The trip had been relativity short, as the made harbor at daybreak. In order to catch the active time of the fish the sailors hunted the had to arrival early. Kendrick disembarked as soon as it was safe to. Adjusting his belt and the dirk at his shoulder, he nodded to his employers before leaving in the morning mist. For an hour he scouted the area, watchful for smugglers or wild beasts, but found none. Eventually he arrived at a large cave. Staring up at it, shielding his eyes form the sun, he decided to stop here for the afternoon. After a brief rest he would return to the fishermen's camp. The island was safe, there was no more truth to the stories of killer dragons than rumor. Turning from the cavern's maw, he sat down on a large rock for a breather. That was when he felt the ground move beneath his feet. |

To be honest, she wasn't quite sure what the hell she was doing all the way out here. Her client had told her that there was a special man aboard, someone who did grunt work for others. A sort of detective. Said client had given her gold to try and poison this man, and Zaina had managed to buy herself aboard the same boat as him -- however, there had been no sign of him. Perhaps the fact that she was busy being violently sick over the side was the reason why she'd failed. In any case, if she did fail, the day wasn't going to end well. "I just want to poison this guy and head home. The sea is not my friend," she thought to herself, finally finding her sea legs just in time for the ship to land on solid ground. It took her an hour or so to disembark; but far less for her to find her target. All she had to do was ask one of the sailors which way they had seen him go. "This will be too easy. Just talk to him a bit, gain his trust, eat lunch with him; and then leave. No one will remember me." When Zaina approached, she was staring right at him, as he was facing her. About to call out a greeting, the ground beneath her feet started to shake and tumble. She wasn't usually very balanced anyway, and the pitching of the earth whipped her feet out from under her. "What the hell?!" She exclaimed, her eyes panicked. This was not part of the plan. |

When it came to work, it was all that he focused on. Though he had not yet made a name for himself as far as he was aware, he was known for being dependable. Once his job was done and he got paid however, he was as socially inclined as they come. And why not? Once you got a good handful of gold and your pocket and a beer in your hand life didn't get much better. But he was focused on his work. And with that sound in the cave ahead now was no time for lounging about. Quickly rising to his feet, he was somewhat surprised to find a girl. What are you doing here?" He asked, both worried and surprised that he'd been followed. His question would go unanswered however as the earth shook again, nearly knocking the two off their feet. Instinctively he stepped forward, catching the girl in his arms before she lost her footing. An arm was still wrapped around her waist when the ground finally stopped moving. |

Zaina was practical. She knew of magic, she knew that it existed and it had taken her half her life to get used to that. Now that the world was pitching and turning underneath her feet, her mind and logical heart told her that it could not be so. There had to be an explanation, but when none presented itself, she was left shocked and frightened. That was why she liked potions so much --- they helped make sense of a world that was so often changing. "I ... don't know," she replied, wobbling on her feet, trying to keep from falling. It was a lot like trying to control a rather large elephant. Sooner or later she knew she was going to hit the gr- oh. Wait. Someone was holding her steady - as in, quite literally, with their arms around her. Holding her steady. "Well isn't this interesting?" She hadn't expected for him to be so forward, or to be so kind looking. Poison was unique; it was rare for her to meet her victims. She was sorry she had, in this case. Finally, the ground came to stop, and she was able to look up from his chest, where she'd been hiding her face and praying to whatever gods still existed to stop this rollercoaster. "Is it .. over?" She whispered, before realizing he was still somewhat holding her and flushing, taking a step back out of his arms. "That was unreal." |

He was starting to wonder if perhaps there was some truth to rumors. Dragons, in these caves? Well he knew that the creatures existed, had the scars to prove it. Even though it had just been a mere whelp, well, maybe not mere. Meek was not a word that applied to dragons. As the earth finally settled, the reason he hoped was only a mild tremor of some kind, he glanced down to the girl in his arms. Though he held her rather tightly, all to make sure she didn't get hurt of course, he felt no embarrassment for the fact. Of course he was no pervert, he let the girl go as soon as she could regain her footing. "Let's just hope that was only an earthquake and not something far more dangerous." He replied at last, a hand dropping to his belt to hover near his sword. "Hmm... seems to have settled. What are you doing out here miss-?" |

What could make the ground shake like that? She'd heard of tremors before, but only in places where there was a known disturbance in the earth. This was just ... out of nowhere! Whatever it was, it made her nervous. "The sailors told me that this guy was out here to track something. They didn't say what," the unknown was definitely what she feared in this case. He might have a lot of confidence in hand-to-hand fighting and sparring with creatures, but Zaina could barely keep herself from tripping up the stairs. Yes, up. The. Stairs. "I have no idea what to think, to be honest. What do you think it was?" Her face was awe-struck, and it took her a moment to register that he'd asked for her name. "Oh, you can call me Sheyr. Sheyr Gem. I was just, um, sent after you by one of the sailors." Her smooth voice faltered for a reason why she was here, but she thought that he would attribute it to the scare they'd just had. After all, being female was one of the reasons why she was constantly underestimated. They didn't know what hit them until she was 200 miles away, drinking her salary away, and they were choking to death. "I don't know why you would come out here! There's nothing here you want to see, right? So why don't we just go," she protested, hugging herself as though she was scared. To be honest, it was an easier act when she kind of was. She didn't want to wait for the island to give a repeat performance. "Please? I don't want to go alone ..." All the while, she knew she had to kill him. |

Ah, blissful ignorance. Though even if he had known she was sent here to kill him he wouldn't kill her. He just didn't hurt women. Well unless they were those 'oh look at me I'm so evil' types that ran around eating children just because they were 'tender. ... Man there was some weird folks in Avalon. Ahem, but not him, of course not. He was just another guy trying to make it by. Scouting places like thee, well he had no clue it gave anyone cause to have him assassinated! He shook his head. "You probably do not want to know." His first thoughts went to the rumors of the beasts living here. And yet these fishermen still came to this island for some prize catch? Insane. A brow rose as he looked at the girl. Now just why would they send some woman after him? Cowards. "Kendrick." He replied by way of introduction. "I was hired to come out here. Scouting ahead to make sure the way is safe for my employers. This being all those fishermen on that boat." He grunted irritably. "Impatience won't get them anywhere though." With a shrug though, he glanced back down the path they'd come from. "I was heading back anyways. Just taking a breather. Though after that" He mentioned the earthquake. "I'd like to check further before letting a bunch of fishers traipse in unexplored terrain." Nodding briefly, he stepped past the girl. "Well, come on. Stay close though." |

She really thought there ought to be a book for this sort of situation. There was nothing preparing her, not her father's wisdom, or employers advice; with how to handle this. Even if she did poison him, what if he had an antidote? There was nothing she could do then, and chances were, he'd know who it was! Then, she was a goner. She wasn't exactly renowned for her skills with defending herself. And if it did work, what if she felt guilty? She couldn't feel guilty! The only way she lived with herself was by not seeing her victims. "You're right, I don't," she replied, grinning in spite of herself. He was witty, without knowing it. Plus, any animal that was large enough to shake the earth was not something she wanted to see. So he seemed like a free-lancer - almost like Zaina herself. They had something in common. How was she supposed to kill him when they had something in common? This whole killer-for-hire thing wasn't turning out as well as she wanted. "You'd think being fisherman they would be more patient; they're perfectly capable of sitting around waiting for a fish to bite," she added. The path wasn't ideal, but it beat sticking around in front of a suspect cave, waiting for something to eat them. "You don't have to tell me," she muttered, heading behind him. "Another one of those, and I might just surrender my soul to the gods now." |

Perhaps unfortunately, the scout carried nothing on his person but a couple of blades. But it was his very occupation that caused him to travel light. A scout was not hired to do combat against the bandits and raiders that haunted caravans. His job was to make sure that sort of thing was not given the opportunity to occur in the first place. "They probably just get antsy, wanting to catch the fish before the dra- animals out here do. Some specialty or some such. Don't really matter to me, I just make sure those no rabid critters or brigands on the way." And that was exactly what he'd done. If there was any more problem, it was their fault he didn't finish investigating. After all, if they hadn't sent the girl out here, he wouldn't have needed to return her. With a cough, he halted conversation. He had not noticed how much he'd rambled until he'd finished. |

Wait. What was that word he was going to say and then stopped? Dra ... what? Her mind whizzed through the possibilities as she thought about how to answer him. What was an animal that started with 'dra'? "Well, you know, I doubt they know how to protect themselves," she replied, rolling her eyes and thinking of the superstitious old men who had plagued her journey here. All this nonsense about women and boats being unlucky. She'd met girl sailors who could handle a boat twice that size with more skill and ease than any man. Ridiculous. "After this, they're probably going to want to get out of here." In her mind, a plan was hatching. What if he -faked- his death? Then they both would be off the hook. She wouldn't find him again, and he wouldn't be hunted down by her employer. It was a win-win situation... that required her to tell him that she had to kill him. Well. That wasn't exactly top on her list of things to do. "Damn, damn, damn. From now, I should play it straight and narrow; only take kills that I can accomplish without seeing the mark," she thought to herself. Then it occurred to her. "There are dragons out here?" She exclaimed, her voice raising into a half-shriek, as she gripped his arm, hopefully stopping him in his tracks. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE ARE DRAGONS?" |

For a few moments they had walked with no more strange happenings. Soon enough however what he'd slipped had registered with the girl and she halted their progress. Forcefully grabbing him by the arm caused the scout to stop dead in his tracks. But his gaze softened at her supposed fear, and he shook his head quickly. "I wouldn't worry about them. They're supposed to be peaceful creatures here. If anything they'll just eat all the fish those guys are worried about." He laughed here, trying to lightning the mood a little. If he seemed confident enough maybe the girl wouldn't be so scared. Kendrick couldn't resist a girl's charms after all. A hand rose as he rubbed one of his ears, the girl's shrieking tone rattling his skull. "Calm down. Don't worry. I wont' let anythinghappen to you. Ok?" Of curse if it did come to dragon slaying, he had no clue what to do. He was not made for hard combat, he did tracking and scouting to avoid a fight. But he wanted to make her feel safe. For some reason. Maybe it was just because he was in the presence of a girl. |

She usually prided herself on her level-head. So much for that; though, one had to admit, it was perfectly rational to be frightened of a rather large mythical beast with lots and lots of teeth. No one could think less of her for that. "And if I get out of this alive and people do, I'll just send the terrible beastie after them," she thought to herself, taking a deep breath. "Yeah, or they could be murderous creatures who want to eat us!" She protested, before sighing. "Whatever the case, let's get out of here." She was strangely reassured. Odd, because she wasn't quite inclined to believe him. If the two were matched together in a betting match, Zaina would have to side with the dragon - and she was never wrong with her investments where gold was concerned. "I--... fine," she said grudgingly, looking down and flushing before forging ahead down the path. "How about we focus on getting back to the ship? You know, seeing as there might be a dragon on the prowl." |

He put on his most brave face, a hand holding his blade with confidence. Mere scout he may be but he'd meant what he said. No one or nothing would he allow to hurt the girl on his watch! Maybe he was just under the typical male assumption that women were in need of protecting, not expected of fighting. With a nod he'd mutter an agreement before forging off along the path ahead. He had already committed it to memory and it was easy going from there on out. The path they tread was rugged but not overly difficult. Before long the view of the shore came up. Chatter of the sailors and fishermen getting ready to work was carried over the cry of gulls and other such birds. Not another rumble of the sleeping dragons had been seen. Though ... he did still wonder why the girl had been out there... |

Yeah right. How could he be acting like he had it all under control? It was a DRAGON. This wasn't some wild boar that you could stick with a dagger, and bam, dead. This wasn't something he could have under control, not if she was freaking out! Generally she prided herself on her relatively even temper; but not anymore. She'd come here to kill him, not end up getting eaten by some scaly beasty. Definitely not on her to-do list. She eyed him warily. "We're going to be eaten," she moaned, as they trotted along. "And it's going to be all your fault. You can't protect us, and I'm damn near useless. I should have just stayed on the boat." On the boat, where the only weapon she posessed was, on the boat where they could get far away from said scaly beasty that was going to eat them. Perhaps if she left now and didn't kill him, she could go back and hide from her employer - lay low for a while. It beat being dragon bait. "Are we there yet?!" |

With his free hand, he slammed a palm to his heart. "Oh lass, you break my heart with such words. Having a little faith will work wonders, you know." Of course he could not keep such a facade up much longer, as the serious face fell and he chuckled briefly. Moving his hand to gesture towards the sea, he lowered the sword arm. "There's the boat. Alright? Ain't no big beasty gonna come after you and me." Left unsaid, of course, was the fact that a hungry dragon would be far more willing to attack the ship full of ... hor d'oeuvres. Of course as these stories go, just because he left it unsaid didn't mean it wouldn't exist. Before he could decide it was safe enough to put his blade away, a really pissed off roar echoed across the beach. A silver and blue streak shot across the sky. It landed agilely upon the shore, a jaw full of needle sharp teeth diving into the side of the boat. The wood shook with the impact, men sent fleeing for their lives. "Oh shitt..." |
