Xue Jian cruised casually through the air, heading southeast past the area renowned as the Dreaming Stones. For once, he was not on any particular job or mission. Today he was just site-seeing, if one could call visiting the remains of a once-floating city site-seeing. Unlike many of the other places he'd visited, his destination was no old ruin from ages past, though it had indeed originated long ago. No. The angel-built city once known as Paradise had been destroyed recently, or so he'd been told. A casualty of the Goddess Kioku, Lady of War. The flying swordsage often found himself drawn to such locations. Places where great moments in history occurred, even if in this case, it had been a most tragic one. The ruins themselves were spread over a large area near the southernmost tip of the mainland, as he could plainly see from his vantage point in the sky. He focused on a spot that appeared to have the largest concentration of remains and flew down to it. There he landed in the center of what might have been an open square, although it was nearly impossible to tell now, and let the spirit sword he'd been flying upon vanish. The destruction of the city was supposed to have happened only a few years before his arrival, so he'd been hopeful that there would be something left to see. But now that he was here, it was clear that he'd been a little too optimistic in that estimate. Falling from the sky had obviously taken its toll, as not a single building was still intact in his general vicinity. There was also evidence of more conventional damage as well. Ash lay everywhere and on everything, indicating that immense fires must have burned, perhaps dealt by the Goddess of War herself, or one of her servants. Xue Jian approached a pile of rubble and crouched down to study it. There he found the remains of a statue ... an angel ... if the stumps extending from its back where any indication. Feather-like shapes could be seen amongst the rocks as well, lending strength to his supposition. Seeing it made him wish he could have come before it had been destroyed. Having met a couple of angels in his time, he thought it must have been a beautiful sight. Edited by Xue Jian, Jun 27 2009, 03:13 PM.

It seemed to him that the best place to stat a new adventure was the beginning. That is, the place he was born and raised. Well until the war came that is. He did not recall much of it, as he had left with his parents near the beginning. They knew their world was falling apart, and decided in their best interest to leave before a goddess killed them all. So far, the family had never regretted it. Now, years later, Tabbris decided to return. His wings fluttered slightly as he climbed over some wreckage. True it would be easier to just fly, but he did not like making a show of it. Actually, when you could fly any time you wish, it became quite mundane after a while. When he made it atop the wreckage he paused to brush himself off. His clothes, once a light tan, where dark grey with soot. So many fires had raged here, and it was as if the very earth was salted, never to grow again. For a moment he pondered why this was so. Until he heard footsteps crunching gravel. Curious, he investigated further until coming upon the sight of a man looking at a statue. Th angel's wings were broken, but you could still tell what it was supposed to be. clearing his throat so as to try not and startle the stranger, he spoke up when the man turned around. "Sad innit?" |

The sound of a man clearing his throat caught Xue Jian's attention, and he turned to face whoever had spoken, only to pause in surprise at what he saw. It was as if the statue he'd been examining had come to life and appeared before him complete with feathery wings on its back. "Sad innit?" The angel said, and for a moment Xue Jian didn't answer. He was momentarily stunned from the winged man's sudden appearance, so the words took somewhat longer than normal to register. "Ah ... forgive me ... Yes. Yes, it is," Xue Jian replied awkwardly. For some reason, the swordsage suddenly felt as if he was walking on eggshells with the stranger. Here he was, standing in the ruins of an angel-built city, not expecting to meet anyone alive, and there stood a real angel right in front of him. Xue Jian thought he shouldn't be so shocked. He'd met a few angel types before after all, but this time it felt different. Perhaps it was the significance of where they were and what had happened here, or maybe it was something else ... he couldn't say for sure. There was sympathy for the angel's loss, and also a vague sense of apprehension. Was the winged man here looking for vengeance? He didn't look agitated in the slightest, but that didn't mean he was not upset by the devastation around him. "Pardon me for asking so abruptly, but was this your home? Do you know what really happened here?" |

He supposed his father would be disappointed in him for that. Because he was supposed to be 'raised better'. Tabbris however never cared too much about formalities. And so far in his travels, people thought those with an overabundance of formalities were all high and mighty or something. And with the wings and all, he didn't like giving off that assumption. In truth he was just, well he wanted to be casual and easy to approach. There really was no point in exploring all Avalon had to offer if you shoved people away and kept all lone wolf like. Giving a soft laugh at the brief awkward pause, he shook his head dismissively. Stepping off a larger chunk of ruin, he approached the discarded statue. Running a hand across the torn wing, he mused of whether he'd seen it when the city was ... whole. "Ah. War. I did call this home once. Left before the war though. Can't say I knew too many of the people that lived here though. But ... it was a beautiful city. Once." |

"Ah. War. I did call this home once. Left before the war though. Can't say I knew too many of the people that lived here though. But ... it was a beautiful city. Once." As the angel continued to show no signs of being upset, Xue Jian felt himself release a tension he'd not been aware of holding, and a sigh escaped his lips ... one of both relief and of pity. Xue Jian tried to imagine what it would be like to return home and see it in ruins like this, but he found that he could not form the image without anger and denial rising up to stand in the way. Perhaps angels possessed greater tolerance for personal tragedy than humans, or maybe this angel had simply put it behind him already. Xue Jian couldn't tell which it was really, but either way, he respected the angel for his apparent strength of heart. Then it occurred to Xue Jian that in his haste to ask questions, he'd neglected to introduce himself. "Pardon me, I seem to have forgotten my manners. My name is Xue Jian. How may I call you?" He asked, giving a polite bow. |

Drawing his palms away from the broken angel, he stepped back. He hadn't met that many people yet, so he had a tendency to forget his manners at times. Even though his parents had been adamant on good attitude. People skills were ... well another matter. But he was trying. That much could be applauded for him. He didn't know why or how he managed to put this place behind him so easily. Maybe it was just because he wasn't exactly th most popular person in the city. Just by birth his status of 'fallen' was enough to scare some people off. It was a concept he knew little about and his parents never spoke of how they had been 'cast out'. Whatever that meant. Turning to focus his attentions on the man once more, he bowed slightly. After returning the respectful gesture, he rose. His hands would rest gently at his belt for the time. It was obvious to be seen that he carried no weapon. "Think nothing of it. It is nice to meet you Xue Jian. My name is Tabbris Requiem." |

"And it is an honor to meet you, Tabbris Requiem," Xue Jian replied humbly, bowing once again for good measure. "I hope that you don't find my presence here intrusive," he began apologetically. "I am something of an explorer, you see. I've heard many tales of this place, but in my experience, stories rarely stand up to first hand experience." Xue Jian paced off to one side, gazing at the ruins around them with a renewed sense of curiosity. On the other side of the square, the shell of an immense structure caught his eye, as Xue Jian could still make out signs of the building's architectural features, including great columns, arches, and intricate exterior stonework that had somehow survived the war. It looked almost sound enough to venture inside, although the ceiling had caved in and the walls were breached in various places. At the highest point of the building, a small white bird descended from the sky and landed, but oddly there was no sound accompanying its movement ... no puff of ash in response to its touchdown. Maybe it was just his imagination, but Xue Jian had the distinct impression that it was looking directly at him. The swordsage narrowed his eyes at the mysterious bird, momentarily wondering what type of bird it was before dismissing it from his mind. It was just a bird after all. Nothing to be concerned about. He turned back to Tabbris then and continued speaking. "But an explorer is different from a lost son returned. Have you come perhaps to pay respects to those that fell here?" |

He should have been disheartened by the sight of his home, but somehow ... well he just wasn't. While Tabbris had no ill will towards those he used to call his neighbors, they never were exactly the best of friends either. It had always just been himself and his parents really. Not that he had any issue with that, but he was a social person by nature. Maybe as a kid it had hurt that he couldn't seem to make friends with everyone else near him. He chalked it up to some superstition amongst angels, and left it at that. The angel stayed where he was, just letting his gave meander over the place. All the destruction made former landmarks unrecognizable. He didn't know what that one large structure was. Though his wings twitched slightly at the sight of a bird. An odd creature in that it seemed to keep staring at him. Tabbris had the vague urge to shoo it away. But let it alone for the time being. Besides, he had conversation to resume. "Something like that." He had no qualms in speaking about himself. It wasn't like his life was particularly interesting, even being an angel as he was. "I was born here, but moved out to Blackmoor when I was still young. Been living out there with my parents till now. Decided it was time to do a bit of adventuring on my own. No better place to start than the beginning I figure." |

As Tabbris explained that he'd moved away to live in Blackmoor before the war, Xue Jian felt an inexplicable chill. Hearing that Tabbris was out exploring and had chosen to start 'at the beginning' was met with a nod and a slight shiver as Xue Jian exhaled a cloudy breath. The feeling that he was being watched had only intensified after he'd turned away from the bird, and Xue Jian was starting to feel anxious. He quickly spun about on one foot, eyes searching for the white bird again, but it was no longer where he'd been expecting it to be. Had it flown away? ... No ... His eyes found it again. The bird was suddenly much closer now, perched on a pile of rubble that stood less than half the distance away compared to before. It might have been his imagination again, but it seemed to him as if the bird had changed positions without flying through the intervening space. From this close he could tell for sure that it was watching him, but it was the resonance in his pack that confirmed his suspicions. He only possessed one object that ever behaved in such a manner, and it only did so under very specific conditions. "Tabbris, did you see that bird fly over here?" Xue Jian asked, surreptitiously reaching into his pack and wrapping his fingers around the fist sized orb that lay within. |

Tabb was not so accustomed to the flora and fauna in this area. But even that bird caught him off guard. Animals usually expressed only a cautious interest in people. But that one ... it seemed ... strange. He however tried to ignore it, merely humming in thought at its mention. "No." Well now, it seemed like starting from the beginning was more interesting than he expected it to be. As he was about to ask whether the other thought it best they approach or merely shoo the animal away, the angel was distracted. His thoughts halted for the time being, he merely gave his wings a shuffle and shifted his weight to one foot. Arms would cross as he altered his gaze between Jian and the strange fowl. "What you got there?" He asked, motioning towards the man's pack. Even he could sense something odd in the air. Whether it was a good or bad strange would have to wait. |

Withdrawing the object in question from his pack, Xue Jian hefted it in his open palm where Tabbris could see it. It was a fist sized orb that looked like it was made from purple stained glass. At the moment, a subtle vibration could be seen and even felt emanating from it, along with a soft purple glow. "It is called the Orb of the Abyss. It reacts to the presence of ... ghosts," Xue Jian answered bluntly. His past experiences with ghosts and spirits were all rather unpleasant, particularly the time when he'd first learned about the Orb and what it was capable of doing. "It also traps them if they come close enough, although I'm not entirely sure how that works exactly." A disembodied voice interrupted their conversation then. The words seemed distorted and irregular in volume, but the desperate voice was clearly feminine and it was pleading. "Please, do not fear! We mean you no harm! Please! Do not use that ... thing ... on us!" |

The angel moved closer, leaning slightly to inspect the strange object. Even if he was an angel he had little to do with the supernatural. Still it was an unusual item, well as far as artifacts go, he supposed. "Interesting." His mind going off track for a moment, he wondered if he would find treasures and artifacts during his adventures. Though son realized he was a bit too old to be day dreaming like some fool youth. "Well thats-" Before he could comment further another voice rang thought out the air. It chilled him a bit, the fading nature of it. Was that bird really a ... ghost? Tabbris certainly did not expect any such amazement in his exploration here. "Uhh..." He glanced around, but could see nothing else except ruins. "Wait ... we?" At this point he looked back to Jian, his expression obviously surprised. It was of no real comfort that his companion was in the same state as he. |

Andumi moved among the ruins silently, partially out of instinct, but mostly out of respect. He'd heard of this ruined city, this "Paradise", and was almost moved to tears at its marred beauty. It reminded him of what he'd been shown of the ruins of the Temple of his Sister Order on his homeland, before it too, had been destroyed. But not by some god or an arcane force. By treachery, and by the wrath of an entire Empire's people crying out in rage and frustration, destroying, raping, and burning that which had stood for tens of thousands of years in less than a generation. But there was no time to reminisce. The sunlight gleamed on his bright blue hair, and he wished he wouldn't have to feel such a visible reminder of his alien-ness from everyone else around him. As he looked at the remains of the architecture of this once-glorious civilization, he actually did begin to cry silently, tears streaming down a face that hadn't felt them in the entirety of his lifespan. He wished he could bring Senriyu here, to live out the rest of their days in a place that could almost rival their Atrea in nostalgic beauty. But then he heard voices, one of them slightly familiar. He wiped his tears away and schooled his face. No one would be able to tell he'd been crying; not even himself, if he'd looked into a mirror. He jogged silently towards the voices, searching his memory for the source of the familiar voice. "Jian! Is that you?" he said as he came within sight of the two figures, turning round a bend in the valley made by two large pieces of sky-city. He hadn't seen Jian since their fruitless attempt to discover the lost tribe of the Vorann, though he had made a good comrade in Jian, and was considering placing a little more trust in this native who looked so different from everyone else here, yet was similar in his dissimilarities to Andumi. Of course, he hadn't forgotten the man next to him, but his attention was wrested from Jian's companion when an Orb that Jian happened to be holding in his hand actually appeared to speak. "What's this? The Orb of the Abyss, you say...you never told me you had this the last time we met, Jian. How interesting. It appears to be giving an amplification effect to the residual energies of the spirits of the dead by allowing them to speak to us in the common tongue. That's very useful tool you've got there, comrade." Andumi commented, as he finished closing in with the other two men. The cursed blade hidden in his robes almost rattled in the presence of the other man, though, which put Andumi slightly more on guard than usual as he surreptitiously muted it before it could be heard by human, or humanoid, ears. His hypothesis, however, was based, not on his ability to 'see' magic, (as a place like the Fallen Paradise would have nearly blinded him from the still-lingering energy flows that surrounded and permeated the area) but drawn solely from his base intelligence and his immense knowledge of everything that he had ever considered interesting over the course of over sixteen millennium. "Corvan? Yes, it's me." Xue Jian was surprised when another person appeared, especially someone he knew, to a small degree at least. Corvan's curious observation was a possibility he'd never considered before. He'd just assumed that ghosts could speak of their own accord. It was something to ponder over at another time. First and foremost, the ghostly bird and its unseen companion obviously wanted something. The question was what. To Corvan, he answered quickly, "I don't usually go around showing it to people, and I don't know about it being all that useful. So far it has only brought me trouble I could do without." The words reminded Xue Jian of his fight with Unáwen the Necromancer and her undead army. Had Caeluath not been there to help him, he'd have surely died that day. Although the ghostly bird did not seem to be hostile, one could never be sure. For all he knew, it could be Unáwen playing a trick on him, and while Xue Jian had grown far stronger since their last meeting, Caeluath was not here this time, and his current companions were ... untested. "And speaking of trouble," he muttered to himself before directing his voice toward the white bird. "What do you want from us?" |

He did not quite know what to think about all this ... well ghosts and whatnot. But he didn't sense any danger form it. There was of course always the possibility that he was too naive for it. Despite his age, he was not too experienced in dealing with people. Though if one told him he had the mentality of, say a kid, he would probably merely laugh and reply 'probably so.' The angel turned for further distractions. Another man had appeared, and with a brief squint Tabbris decided the stranger was in fact corporeal. If another ghost had appeared ... well, it would have just been too much. He nodded briefly in acknowledge to the blue haired man who'd appeared, but offered no further introductions as none were given. Besides the ghostly voice drew his attention away from the other man's friend. Crossing his arms, his wings would ruffle involuntarily. The ghost and bird were starting to effect him somehow. Perhaps his kind were simply more attuned to the spirit realm than he ever assumed. Or maybe the whole thing just creeped him out a little... |
