The city was a busy place, people shopping in the mid of the day, women running their errands as men kept their shops and unloaded supplies down at the dock. The finer dressed folk remained in the upper city, most of them doing nothing more then enjoying their life and spending their coins. Yet the gem of the city was not their monstrous estates and grand stables. It was the opera house. The Opera Populaire. In recent years this massive building was made of the most vibrant cream and orange stone with marble pillars. Large mahogany doors with brass knobs welcomed the people into the red carpeted entrance. Stone gargoyles snarled at you to keep away from the haunted building from the outside but once inside Greek statues stood prod and elegant as magical murals covered the ceiling drawing your eyes to every work of art within the opera house. However this opera was more then just beautiful, it was loved for so much more. There was a story, a legend behind the opera house. This was more then a place of arts but a place of mystery. For years there had been rumors of the haunting within the opera. Tales of a phantom who played with the scenery, dropping curtains, causing flash explosions, and frightening the cast. Yes the Opera Populaire had seen its fare share of people coming and going and now it would say goodbye to its long time owner and welcome in two new men. They had made a fortune in the scrap metal business and for some reason were driven to buy the old grand opera house. Within the opera was buzzing as they prepared for their next production of Hannibal. Singers and dancers worked in small groups practicing as the director tried to get together the chaos. The rumors of the owner leaving had spread like wild fire and everyone was buzzing with the news. In the rafters the backstage crew searched for a lurking shadow that may have caused one of the curtain ropes to be severed. They whispered to each other of the Phantom and then went back to work trying to replace it. The dancers leaped about on stage as two female figures seemed to be hiding from the chaos chattering about the news of the new owners. One of the choirs members tangled in the rope that had been cut leaps across the stage before tumbling into the band pit sending the harpist out of his chair and crashing into the violinist. Another dancer threw her hands up into the air and cried out, “This has become so utterly unorganized, so where are these new owners anyways…and where is Monsieur Lefèvre, don’t tell me he just sold the opera house and left without a single goodbye.” The stage fell silent for a moment as the people gathered around to investigate what was going on just behind the curtains and footsteps echoed across the hall. |
