Fight Mods?

Just a little something I've implemented on forums I've run in the past, and while some found it irksome all agreed that it was fair.

Concerning fights and altercations between characters, to ensure that god-modding and power-playing are nipped in the bud before they have a chance to strike, if a battle begins within a thread and there are multiple players involved, contact an Admin or moderator in order to moderate the thread for the duration of the fight. I find having a 'higher power' referee any combat is much more effective than letting the two+ players decide the outcome of attacks and whatnot.
The way it works is thusly:

Cassie lunged at Leon with a crowbar.

Now, rather than having Leon's player decide whether or not the blow will land, a moderator steps in and posts the outcome AFTER Leon's player posts how he/she wants Leon to react to the attack.

Leon jumped to the side with the intention of dodging Cassie's strike.

Now, having read both player's intentions, the moderator will make a decision and post the outcome.

Cassie's attack met nothing but air as Leon nimbly dodged her incoming thrust.
Or possibly
Fast, but not fast enough, Leon felt the heavy weight of the crowbar impact his hip as he was thrown to the side.

If the admin/mods are busy, what about 'fight mods' dedicated strictly to refereeing combat?
It wouldn't have to be a necessity, but if someone feels a fight could get out of hand all could agree to a third party getting involved to ensure fairness. But of course, someone who knows the characters involved or at least takes the time to study them =]

It's not an idea I'm fond of. Effectively, you are taking certain aspects of a roleplayer's control over their character away from them, which is somewhat unfair. What if Cassie wanted her blow to miss? What if Leon wanted not to be able to move out of the way in time? To implement a system like this would cause far more problems than a disagreement between a pair of roleplayers, in my opinion.

This is a system that's been suggested for Avalon dozens of times, yet it's never found it's way into being implemented. I guess the main reason for that is Avalon's prized freedom. We don't want to start telling people what to do in their RPs, and that's the magic of Avalon: the people who are in that specific topic get to decide exactly what happens in their post. Having people who moderate fights is a great system that works for many sites, but its limitations would turn Avalon away from our goal of being an open RPing site.

Of course, people are allowed to have others moderate their fights if they wish that; there's no rule against doing so. We just don't want to enforce such a system on the whole site. If you want someone to moderate your fight, why not ask someone who you think is impartial to help out? (:

Essentially, you have the freedom to require this for your fights if that is how you prefer to have them ( provided your opponent agrees, of course )

As a Combat RPer myself, I would hate for someone to tell me what I can or cannot do in a fight RP. Nobody but myself knows what my character is capable of in a fight, thus I feel it should stay in the hands of those that RP.

I mean you lay out your attacks, its your opponents job to use his judgement based on his characters abilites and your own abilites to see if such attacks hit, miss, or otherwise. True enough we have people that ignore that... but a true Combat RPist (totally made that word up) knows its more fun to get hit than it is to dodge or block every attack. I however am a ferm believer of "Earn your strikes, take your licks" which means, if I feel my character should get hit, damaged badly etc etc then it happens no matter how much I'd rather it not. Just as if I feel my character earned that blow, it should happen.

Sujies 2 cents.

Of course, if you suspect your opponent of godmoding, you can always contact ANY admin or mod to review the post in question for you.

As Nay and Carter said. There are accounts that exist that are for purposes like that, and you can always request a mod to play one of those accounts and oversee a fight, as long as your opponent agrees. It is also true that if you suspect your partner of godmoding, you can contact a mod / admin and let them review the post and make a ruling. I rather like the idea of leaving either option to the discretion of the two (or more) players involved, because it allows them to customize the experience however they like. Some people are fans of fight mods, some people rather like a free-form style.

It is an idea that's been brought up in the past, and I'm not sure many members realize that there are staff accounts for this purpose at their disposal. (: So thank you for the posting the topic all the same.

Yet it does solve a whole lot of problems which this site has, and furthermore, with the new fighter abilities coming out, some moderation of fight threads may be necessary in order to make sure that people respect the various levels of strength/speed, and other abilities.

Let us not forget Kant's view of private and public right, that we give up our initial private rights in the state of nature to form a civil society, and we find that our rights are exactly the same as they were before, only enforced by the civil state.

As has been said, the option is available to you if you prefer to fight under such conditions. *nods*
To me, it would feel like I lost control over my character >.< Although I'd probably still accept such moderation if someone wanted to, at least once, to see how it works to form a full judgement of whether I liked it or not.
