It seemed a familiar story. Of those she'd lost before. It was always some off chance, some twist of fate that she met people. Then lost them. It would cause one to wonder if it was at all worth it. Friends and loves and allies, meeting people you actually bonded with only to lose them again. Koralle blamed the state of the world these days, more than herself. But there was just a few times than guilt would resurface and she had to return to places like these. He hadn't been much younger than herself. And reminded her of her brother in a way. Even though she hadn't gotten the chance to learn his name, hence the unmarked grave she now stood before, she felt some sort of kinship with him. Two people with a similar path in life, aimless wanderer. She didn't dare call herself an adventurer. Koralle simply traveled here and there because she didn't find anywhere to call home. But he ... that guy, well he'd had such grand ideals. It pained her now that he'd been cut own before his dreams were ever realized.

Koralle had gotten revenge for him, had found justice at the hands of her own blade. But it absolved nothing. Vengeance, in the end it didn't make one lick of difference. It was why she left things be as they may be, left the lives of her family's killer up to fate. Instead she did what she could to prevent others from facing similar ends. Maybe she'd grown a little since that time. She had brought no flowers with her and shed no tears but, standing at a small pile of stones at the side of the canyon path, she wondered if she should have. It still wouldn't solve anything, but standing at the site of grave with her hands in her pockets and a horse tired to a dying tree just yards away, she felt somewhat useless.

Standing upon a spirit sword, Xue Jian flew lazily through the air above the Valley of Quartz. He was in no particular hurry and was in fact feeling a bit sleepy on account of the large lunch he'd eaten a few hours prior, as evidenced by the gaping yawn that escaped his lips. His mind wandered from where he should stop for the night to what sort of job he should take up next to the view of the shiny stones passing by below him. The sight was mesmerizing to behold and on a whim he flew in lower to get a better look, not realizing that his flight path was becoming erratic from his lack of focus.

Skimming the surface of the valley, he crested a small hill and suddenly found himself on a collision course with a horse. "OH CRAP!" Eyes bulging wide, he turned and narrowly avoided the animal, only now there was a girl in his path instead. Another sharp swerve kept him from hitting her, but the spirit sword struck an out cropping of rock that sent him spinning out of control. With his focus lost completely, the spirit sword vanished, and Xue Jian went tumbling down a nearby hill, arms raised to protect his head.

After awhile, the ground leveled out, and he slid to a stop, face down and sore all over. Several scrapes and small cuts were visible through the many tears in his clothing, and he groaned in protest as he rolled onto his back.

"Owww ... Never. Doing. That. Again ..." he muttered, laying there wondering what the hell had just happened.

As things usually went, her plans for her journey never went ... well as planned. Something always happened, it seemed to be the way of things. Or some random stranger wandered up and started having a conversation. Like they were talking about the weather, while standing at a makeshift grave site. People sure were strange these days. But a lot of them were not nearly as strange as the even which unfolded.

Not only had something startled her horse, something in itself which would put her on guard, but that very same something went flying into the canyon wall. Koralle jumped back, though the flying ... thing, had missed her, the rocks it had dislodged in its collision course were still tumbling down. Dodging the rocks was the most important matter at hand, luckily her method of dong so was unseen and thus she was spared any embarrassment. She dove for the ground, rolling out of the way of a rock and kicking dirt in her own face. As the world fell silent again however, she rose from her tucked position in the dust.

Coughing, she brushed herself off, still not aware that it had been a person flying about. First she went back to the horse, calming the animal and making sure it was not harmed in any way. The beast snorted and stomped a hoof, but after shaking its mane seemed otherwise fine. Unhappy, but fine. Adjusting her coat, Koralle then backtracked to the source of the interruption and went to investigate. just in case, she kept her jacket pushed back, her blade in easy reach should it need drawing.

Stepping over a hill, she was further surprised to find a man laying in the dust, muttering to himself. Approaching carefully, caution was soon overrode by concern at the man's state. "Ah..." Koralle ran over, halting at the man's side and kneeling next to him. 'A-are you alright?" Her voice sounded uncertain. And, it was. After all, it wasn't every day people just started falling from the sky...

From Xue Jian's point of view, all he could see was the sky, although even that seemed blurry at the moment. Turning his head only increased the effect, so he tried to remain still and ignore the stinging that spiked through his skin whenever he did move. He didn't think he'd broken anything in the fall, but he couldn't be sure of that until he tried to get up. And he just didn't feel up that yet.

The sound of incoming footsteps reached his ears, but Xue Jian was still too dazed to take notice. So when a shadowy figure suddenly appeared in his field of vision, he squinted and stared, trying to figure out what he was looking at. Slowly, a woman's face became clearer. Long black hair framed cheeks marred with dirt, but it was her striking blue eyes that he focused on, as they gazed down at him in concern and words issued forth from her lips.

"Ah ... A-are you alright?"

"I- ... don't know," he replied weakly. His voice sounded hoarse, and his words came out stilted and broken. "I think ... yes, I am ... sorry ... for startling you."

Though she wasn't very familiar in terms of first age and had no healing capabilities, she still found herself looking the man over for injuries. Judging just by sight, he didn't seem that bad off. A few scrapes and bruises from the tumble maybe. Or at least she hoped it was only superficial. Even if she could somehow manage to help an injured man to her horse, it was a long way off from any town yet. "Don't worry about it."

Offering a hand, she shook her head. "Do you think you can stand?" Even if he couldn't right now, she already ran through in her mind what she could do to help. They could always rest here, ti was only noon after all. She was sure that she could set up a quick cap until the man was ready to rise again. Though she had been so startled in his appearance form the sky that she could not be certain how far he'd fallen. Or the resulting extent of the damage.

Blue eyes, he thought. She has very blue eyes ... They came in and out of focus as he tried to concentrate on them. He couldn't recall exactly how he'd ended up in his current state, other than short flashes of memory. The image of a startled horse came to mind, as well as the sense of falling ... and pain, but it was her eyes, wide with surprise as he came rushing toward her, that he remembered the most vividly.

She shook her head in response to his muttered apology and her face blurred again, making him struggle to reacquire those eyes again.

"Don't worry about it," she said. "Do you think you can stand?"

"Yes," he replied, although he wasn't really sure if that was true or not. He reached up to take her outstretched hand and with her help, rose up to a sitting position. His head ached and the various scrapes on his body stung in protest, but those were only minor annoyances. He didn't feel the sharp, stabbing pain of fractured bones or pinched nerves, and other than the scratches, his limbs seemed to be okay, so he tried to stand up the rest of the way. It was slow going, lacking his usual ease, and he relied heavily on the girl for support on the way up.

Once he was on his feet again, Xue Jian stood still for a moment and tried to get his bearings. A wave of vertigo rushed over him and he swayed, leaning on the girl again instinctively. After a minute or so, the spell of dizziness passed, and he felt a little better.

"I think I am okay now. Thank you, miss ... uh, what's your name?"

She took his hand, and though she wasn't very strong, managed to help the man to his feet. Koralle was, of course, not accustomed to men just falling out of the sky, but no harm was one on her end, she she passed off any questions for later. More importantly was making sure the man was alright. It just wouldn't do to have someone, even a stranger appearing from the air, to die in such a place. As she stepped back in aiding the stranger to a seated position, she kept nearby in case he needed more help.

He tried to stand after a moment, and she was more than willing to assist. Even letting him lean on her as much was required. Judging by how difficult it had been for him to stand solidly, it seemed the man had taken quite a fall. When at last the man seemed stabilized and able to stand without her support, she took a small step back. Just enough to catch him if he should lose his footing again. "Koralle." There had been a time when she always gave her last name as well. But these days it seemed the simplest replies were best. Koralle wasn't the type to get too wordy.

"Koralle," he repeated dumbly. "It's an honor to meet you, Koralle. I am Xue Jian."

He tried to bow, as was his custom, but the ache in his head made him abort it less than half way through. As he raised his hand to rub the back of his head, he thought of shaking hands with her instead, but ... well, they'd done that already ... sort of. He realized then that up until she'd stepped back just now, he'd been touching her quite a bit more than what he usually considered proper, and were it not for the circumstances, he'd have been blushing furiously.

Finally, it dawned upon him how his arrival must have looked to Koralle, and he was suddenly filled with embarrassment. She could by rights be dressing him down for nearly killing both her horse and herself, and Xue Jian was surprised that she was taking it so calmly.

"Please forgive me for causing you so much trouble, Koralle," he said weakly. "I assure you that my landings are usually a great deal less ... exciting."

Another easterner then? She had met a couple before, lost contact with an old friend though. Pity that. But it seemed her lot in life. Koralle shook her head to abandon her meandering thoughts. Now that the man seemed to have escaped death, and could stand on his own again, she stepped back to give space. Koralle was not the type to remain in close quarters with people, felt awkward really. In the spur of the moment though, she'd do what she had to in order to help someone. Its the way she always was despite social awkwardness.

"No. Its okay. No harm done-err." Oh wait that sounded ... selfish? Yes. That wasn't exactly what she meant. "I mean. Um. I'm alright. Just not accustomed to people falling out of the ... sky." Well, that didn't sound very much better. Koralle abandoned the effort. "....Ah!" Here she was stumbling over her words and the man was bleeding from his head. That had been a nasty fall. "I've some water back with my horse. I think you need to sit back down, you don't look too well."

Xue Jian wanted to chuckle at Koralle's comment about people falling from the sky. Indeed, one didn't see many people flying around in the same manner as himself. Pretty much everyone else Xue Jian had met with the ability to fly had wings of some kind, although he'd met one man that flew in an even more unusual way ... via pure magical force issued from his hands and feet.

Mana Burst, I believe he called it, Xue Jian thought, his mind wandering somewhat randomly until Koralle mentioned getting water from her horse and suggested he sit back down.

To this, he shook his head lightly, though even that much threatened to bring forth the dizziness again. In truth, if he sat down, it was quite likely that he wouldn't be able to get back up on his own, and Xue Jian didn't want Koralle to have to help him up twice in the same number of minutes.

"You are too kind, Koralle," he replied. "I would greatly appreciate some water, but for the time being, I think I'd like to stay on my feet."

"Okay." She nodded, before turning back towards her horse. There was little else she could do at the moment. Stepping over the large dip in the road, she soon passed by the grave site she'd been musing over before. Her gaze fell upon her horse, Alberich, and she noticed he was still spooked. Approaching the animal, she reached out a soothing hand to calm him. Hushing the animal, she decided to loosen his gear for the time being. There was no telling how long it would take to help the sword flier back to a travel ready state again. Removing the saddle and ensuing that he was tied well to the scraggly tree, Koralle retrieved a wineskin half full of water.

Grabbing an additional pack, she tossed it over her shoulder and returned to the man with water skin in hand. Something spooked her along the way however, and a hand dropped near her blade. Quickening her pace, she arrived back to where the injured man had been left standing. Her expression this time was worried however, her gaze drifting back to the roadside behind them. "I don't suppose you had any friends looking for you..." The shadows on the roadside moved as they shouldn't have, there was no simple woodland animal roaming here. Koralle so hated the feeling of being watched with no ability to flush out stalkers in the dark...

Xue Jian waited patiently while Koralle saw to her horse, using the time to try and clear his head. He took a few small steps to test his balance and footing. It seemed like he was improving a little. He could move around without falling down at least, although he lacked his usual speed and agility. Deciding he could try and push things a little further, he assumed a basic stance and tried to hold it. Surface pain registered from all over as he his limbs extended into the posture, but he pressed on, closing his eyes and focusing his mind as he was taught in one of his very first lessons. He needed to know how bad the head injury was, and this was a useful technique for finding out. His head throbbed from the effort, but he didn't feel faint or light headed anymore. That was a good sign.

"I don't suppose you had any friends looking for you..."

The sudden sound of her voice surprised him, but he did not move other than to open his eyes and look at her. She seemed uneasy and by the way she held herself, Xue Jian thought she looked ready for a fight. "No. I was alone. Is something wrong?"

Even though she didn't now this man, she somehow felt as if she could trust him. Maybe it was just his injured state, or maybe he just had some vibe about him that did not put her at ill ease. Whatever the reason, she believed him when he said he was alone. Growing nervous, Koralle handed him the water, but her opposite hand hovered near her belt. "We're being watched." Lowering her pack to keep both hands free, she pushed back the edge of her coat. Despite the sword at her hip, she did not seem confident when it came to combat. In fact she made no show of hiding fear or shaking nerves.

She did not know the identity of their stalkers. However one knew her. Or the appearance a now dead man had given him. Contrary to Koralle's belief at the time, one of the bandits she had hunted down and killed in vengeance here, was not completely dead when she left his supposed corpse. Just like anyone else, he had family, specially a brother who often hunted in this area. What a coincidence it was when he recognized the girl standing in the canyon. Since then he had gathered his friends, and followed her back here. Unexpected was her new company however, but the hunter turned bandit had no qualms in dispatching the stranger as well.

Just as her hand had closed around the hilt of her sword, Koralle was abut to speak. Whatever words she was about to give were cut short. Stepping from the shadows of the valley and from the hill she'd just left, several men cut off any means of escape. "Well girly fancy meetin you heer! Didn' spect you to have a friend." The man was large enough to make his sword look like a small dagger, as he chuckled unsettlingly. "What? You don't see the resemblance? Aye well its been awhile. Don't recall certain bandits you killed heer? Reckon you thought you did a good deed?" Without warning the gruff man lunged, forcing Koralle to draw her blade in defense. "That wa my brother!" Taking that as their cue, the four others drew their blades and set themselves on Jian. "Jian, watch out!"

"We're being watched," Koralle answered as she put down her pack and pulled back one side of her long coat, revealing a curved sword with a wolf's head pommel. Xue Jian took a cue from her and remained in his stance, his hand reaching up to the hilt of his own blade while scanning their surroundings for signs of movement. He didn't have to search long, as a group of five men soon appeared.

It quickly became evident that they had some kind of grudge against Koralle. She'd killed bandits here before it seemed, and Xue Jian wondered briefly what had brought her back. There was no more time for thought, however, as the biggest man in the group lunged at Koralle, yelling something about his brother, while the other four charged at Xue Jian.

"Jian, watch out!"

As if answering Koralle's call, Xue Jian drew his grandfather's sword from its sheathe and immediately swung it in a wide horizontal arc that cut across the paths of all four incoming bandits. A spirit wave swept out from his weapon, following the line he'd drawn, but in his weakened state it lacked its usual strength. One man managed to duck under it and keep coming, while another held up his blade and blocked it. The last two, at least, took the wave in the face, their heads snapping backwards as if they'd just been punched in the nose. It would only slow them down for a moment, but that would have to be enough, as Xue Jian prepared to deal with the first of the bandits to reach him.

As she brought her blade to guard, she wracked her thoughtstrying to figure out what the man was speaking of. She had never seen him before, and he didn't seem to know anything about her other than she'd killed someone. Koralle did not make it a habit to go after bandits and their ilk. Except that one time ... Ah. She remembered now, this place. A stolen horse, a newfound friend slain. So he was related to the one of the men she'd followed and killed. Well, not on her own, another passerby had arrived and helped her. Koralle decided that she wasn't going to let this go without a fight. Them an as trying to kill her and no amount of talk would stop him. She could see that in the way he brought the blade down, the anger in his eyes. "You brother killed a friend of mine."

She stepped back, bracing herself against the impact of the blade. Despite the slender katana she wielded and the heavy blade the other did, her weapon didn't bend under the strain. This was due to no prowess of hers however, it was only because the blade was enchanted. Still, she struggled to avoid being pushed off her feet. It was hard to speak without breaking her focus, but she couldn't let go of the fact that she was no mindless killer. Vengeance was not her usual answer, but this had been a ... special case. "I say that makes us even enough!" With both hands at the hilt, she braced herself against the next impact. As soon as the man moved to bring his blade about again, she steeled her resolved. Pressing forward, she ducked past the blade, a hand leaving her own. "Schuss." From her free hand shot forth a handful of magical energy, catching the bandit off guard and slicing open the arm nearest to her.
