Rivfader moved through the dense trees. The snow below his feed seemed to be deafening to him, as he was doing his best to be quiet. He had been following a deer for hours, and was beginning to wonder how old the tracks were. Dark was beginning to fall, and he was ready to give up and look for a gave when he spotted it. A small doe stood there, chewing on a bright green patch of grass that had managed to stick up through the snow. He slowly pulled back on the string of his bow. The snow had made the bow cold and stiff, and it made just a little creaking noise, just enough to alert the doe. In his hunger, mixed with the fear that the prey might escape, he released the arrow without perfectly lining the shot up. He was fortunate in that he pierced both lungs of the prey. It leapt once, but couldn't even get it's feet under itself for the landing, and it crashed to the ground. It struggled against death for only a moment, and it was done. Now, if only Rivfader could find a cave...

After only minutes of searching, Rivfader came across a small cave. It only took a moment to search the cave to find that there were no goblins or orcs, and that none were staying there. Rivfader began his small trek back to the doe he had previously shot. There was a large boulder in the way, and as he rounded it, he saw that four goblins were dragging his kill away. Naturally, that didn't sit well with the hunter. He drew his bow back with excellent precision, and released. The arrow went through the neck of the goblin farthest from him. Normally he would have shot the closest, not only in hopes that the others wouldn't notice, but also to give himself those extra few feet between him and the other goblins he'd have to shoot. But he wanted them to see that first goblin die painfully. They turned to charge him, but before they could cover a quarter of the distance, another one fell, this one with an arrow placed neatly in his diaphragm. At half way, the third goblin was slowed with an arrow to his stomach, and at a quarter of the way he fell with another arrow to the stomach. As the last approached him, he dropped his bow and reached out with his left hand and smashed the little goblins head against the stone. After making sure all of the goblins were dead and incapable of making noise, Rivfader drug his doe back to his cave to clean and eat. Edited by Rivfader, Jun 2 2009, 11:31 AM.

Gright was not having a good day. The deer he had been tracking fell to the clutches of another tracker. The man wasn't the type to steal a kill either, so he left it alone when the killer left. He was probably just trying to find a place to stay the night in warmth. Gright, being the man he was, felt it nessicary to stay and watch the deer. Just in case the killer should die or get lost, Gright wanted to be there to take the deer. He hadn't eaten in days and his stomach was screaming at him to take the meat for himself. He was lost in thought when a club struck his back. He fell forwards, pain rushing thorugh his body, but the big man wasn't down. Picking himself up, he caught sight of a few goblins in the area. Four were taking the doe and two seemed to want some darker meat that night. It was hard to see the deer stealers, so Gright focused on the two closest. Luckily for him, they only weilded clubs. They rushed him, swining like the mad beasts they were. Gright swung his body backwards to dodge the first blow, then as he came forward, came up and under the assailant with an uppercut. He hit the goblin squarley in the jaw, hearing it crunch under his blunt force. The second goblin, fear dancing on his face, stopped for a second. He decided he was hungry enough to try another attack and swung his club at the big man. Gright blocked this time, pain lancing through his right arm that had come up. He swung his leg low, sweeping the goblins feet out from under him. He crashed on his back and screamed as he saw a large, black fist slam into his chest. "Now, lets see if I can find where the deer killer went to," Gright said to himself. He noticed the other goblins were dead; shot with a bow. It seemed as if the previous hunter had returned for his kill. Gright re-counted his luck and followed the man's tracks to a cave. "Hello in there!" Gright shouted before entering. He didn't exactly wish to get shot. |

Rivfader hadn't even noticed the large man off to the side fighting the two other goblins. Before he could even begin cleaning the doe that he had shot, he heard a greeting from around the corner, approaching the cave. Rivfader didn't have time to ready his bow before whoever it was came around the corner to view the small cave, and there was nowhere to hide. He readied himself for a fight, just in case the "hello" wasn't as friendly as it sounded. Right as Rivfader placed himself into a good fighting stance, a large black man came around the corner. This person was much larger than Rivfader, and had some blood on his knuckles. The blood was much darker than human blood, so it was clearly the blood of goblin or orc. This man was probably friendly. Rivfader relaxed a little bit. The man's eyes dropped to the doe and widened. The man was hungry. "Care to join me? I can't eat this whole thing myself." He motioned to the doe on the ground. Rivfader was more than happy to share the doe with someone. He didn't have the proper stuff to save the meat that he couldn't eat before it went rotten. Besides, he really wanted the company. Edited by Rivfader, Jun 4 2009, 03:18 AM.

Gright hadn't planned to give away his need for food so easily, but his eyes couldn't help but stare at the deer. He quickly walked over and ripped a leg of the deer with little difficulty. "Don't mind if I do!" Gright said, please with the hospitality of this man. "So, see you killed some goblins to get yer kill back. Two of em tried sneakin up on me, but you gotta be a bit more forceful when you're fighting a man my size." He laughed heartily, then tore into his deer leg without cooking it. "Get more nuetrients this way. Names Gright Undergrass! Call me Grit though." He held out his hand in a friendly gesture. |

The large man reached out to shake Rivfader's hand. Rivfader was somewhat nervous that the man might verywell crush his hand, but he returned the handshake. The man was eating the deer completely raw. Rivfader always ate his barely cooked, but never raw. He really didn't have any urge to keep it completely raw either. He began to start on the fire while speaking with his new companion. "Just two goblins tried to attack you? They must've been mighty hungry to try someone four times their size like that. I almost pity the ugly buggers. I don't suppose you had much of a problem with them, even unarmed? Speaking of which, what's a man doing out here in the wilderness with no weapon? We need to work on that and get you all armed up." Rivfader finally got the fire going and ripped some meat, with much more effort than it required Grit, off of the doe and tossed it into onto the embering coals. Leaving it on them for only about ten to fifteen seconds, he flipped the meat, and then after another few seconds removed it. He finally had food and company. This was the life. "They deffinately looked hungry," Gright said between eating. He wasn't a fan of talking while chewing so he made sure to swallow. "One of em looked like he wanted to run, but came swinging anways. Stupid blighters, I say." Gright was surprised that this man was being so friendly to offer to help him get weapons. It wasn't everyday that you found someone that friendly, especially in the mountains. "Thanks for the offer," Gright replied. "Thats actually the reason I'm here in the mountains. Tracking my father, which may be difficult seeing as how he taught me the ways of tracking. Got a letter from him a few months ago saying he had something for me but that I had to earn it. Told me to track him till I caught up to him. I recon he got here a good day before I did. Wouldn't have happened to see anyone out here, would you? |

A tracker? Rivfader thought to himself. "You know, it's Grit right?, I'm a tracker too. Think it'd be cheating to get help from a fellow tracker? I really don't have anything better to do. I'm just out here existing." Rivfader was kind of embarrassed that he had forgotten the man's name, but he was terrible with names. He kinda hoped that the large man wanted some help, just existing wasn't too exciting. "Besides, if your father is anywhere near as large as you, all we'll have to do is follow the crater sized footprints." Rivfader was still trying to get over the immense size of the man. He hadn't ever seen that much muscle outside of an ox. He ripped another bite off of his piece of doe. Edited by Rivfader, Jun 4 2009, 04:23 AM.

Gright laughed at the comment about his father. Last time he saw him, Gright was only 15. He was big then, he could only imagine how big his father was now, if he grew at all. "My father knows how to keep his footprints to a minimum. As for teaming up, he was always a fan of friends," Gright replied. "So if you wish to help, I'm not gonna complain. Oh, and a warning. We'll probably have more goblin friends visit us before nightfall. There were more tracks to the east of us that didn't belong to the group we massacred. Neither of us took the time to get rid of our tracks either." Gright paused, chewing a piece of meat as he thought more. "They'll see their fellows dead, see our tracks, and follow us here no doubt." Gright picked himself up and walked to the front of the cave, nodding at the man. He realized he hadn't gotten his name, but it didn't really matter to him. Gright was taking first watch, the nod was stating. He had excellent sight, as any tracker should, and would be able to spot the goblins if they did in fact come. |

Rivfader felt stupid, he hadn't covered is tracks, or even noticed other goblin tracks. He didn't look like much of a ranger with sloppy behavior like that. "Well mate, if you're interested in first watch, I suppose you should use my bow." After making the offer, Rivfader just realized that he offered to sleep near a complete stranger, which was uncommon for him. Even worse, he told the stranger that he could use his bow. For once, he'd take a chance. He handed the large man the bow and his quiver of arrows. "Just try not to snap my bow in half by overextending it, it was made for a much smaller person" he said with a chuckle. Rivfader kicked some sand over the fire to make sure that goblins, should they attempt to track him and Grit, had no help from him. He curled up by the fire to get what little warmth would still come from it and closed his eyes. He just realized that he hadn't told his new companion his name! He opened his eyes and said "My name is Rivfader" and then closed his eyes. He would feign sleep for a few hours just to make sure this stranger wouldn't try to kill him. Even if the stranger decided to try to back him into the cave, he was sure he was quicker than the large man, and that he could escape, though that would cost him his bow. He sure didn't act like his namesake very well. |
