Akire couldn't help the grin that broke out over his face at her mention of cuddling him as a cub. "You know, it's kind of funny... As cubs, we find the most security close to our mothers. It wasn't a rare sight to see a newly transformed cub in the arms of its mother, looking like nothing more than a kitten." He said with a shrug of his shoulder. "A mother's heartbeat is the most soothing of all, and for a child of only five or six going through the rapid stages of trying to get accustomed to a body that is completely foreign to them..." He stopped a shrugged a moment. "I guess it's safe to say that we all ran crying to our mothers for comfort." He said with another grin. It was funny that most men would have been ashamed of it, but Akire only saw it as a fact of life. His mother had been his greatest comfort when he had been young, while his father had really taken charge once his brother and he had come of age to learn to hunt and live as men. He supposed that that was why he still mourned for his parents. He swallowed past a lump that had formed in his throat. Akire sensed her apprehension at his comment, and worried that he had said too much, but as he backpeddled a bit, she seemed to ease up again and Akire almost breathed a sigh of relief. He cleared his throat and then listened to her a moment. Mag was anything but what he would call ordinary. Most women would have been well in to the stages of complaining by now. Most women would be demanding he give her more appropriate sleeping quarters, or demanding that he personally saw to it that they were protected, which he gladly would have done anyhow, but that was besides the point. Either of those options were plausible, but the other option that crossed his mind was a harsh reality. They'd either be doing those things, or throwing themselves at him and trying to seduce him. He had had that happen one too many times after a rescue attempt. Even after he had taken up a role as a leader among their group of survivors, some of the younger girls had looked up to him. Some had even gone as far as to get into fights with the other girls over which woman would marry him one day. The memory made Akire cringe and e realized that Mag and him were even more alike than she knew. If that was the case, what made her so damned appealing to him. If he had turned down the other women in his life, why was it that he wanted to keep this one close? Closer than he should have. He raked a hand through his hair, frustrated with the complexity of it. Her agreement to come to him if she needed any help in the city was enough to set his mind at ease. At least if he wasn't around, she'd be sure to find a guard somewhere in the city. The only problem was, he wanted to be her saviour. He fought down that train of thought and tried to push things away. If wishes wee fishes, he'd be living in a damned pond. So he opted for a curt nod and a brief, "Good." He smiled at her excitement and then nodded slowly. "I can just see you singing your little heart out. I bet you'd be magnificant." He said with another smile. He truly meant it. He had spent the last few days hearing her trilling laughter and her sing-song voice echoing through the forest around them. |

Mag could agree with him, she had no idea how many times she had run to her mother as a child crying and searching for comfort in her arms. Mag knew then that the safest place in the world had been her mothers arms. So many strange things had happened to Mag when she was growing up, things her mother could not even help her with like the time she had waken up and pulled a feather out of her shoulder blade that had grown in over night. She also remembered the time she had a jolt of electricity run down her arm and it had stunned her for some time. Mag had been so afraid growing up, so afraid of herself and what was wrong with her. First it had been rejecting her angel half and then crying that she would never have wings. Not all the half breeds got them, she was just one of those who would forever long for the sky but never touch it. Looking towards Akire she thought about who comforted her now, who she ran to when she would be afraid or in pain due to more 'changes' brought on by her angelic blood. Who would hold her tightly when the world was falling down around her? She blinked lightly almost seeing the world around her fade away and all that stood out was Akire himself. He was the one she would turn to in her darkest hours. She knew he would hold her tight when she needed to be held and inevitably she always needed someone to hold her for a while just so she could remember what keeping your feet on the ground felt like. "I had always ran to my mother as a child. I think I still run to her more then most people. Then again she is really the only person who has loved me and looked out for me. True I have my brother, but it's not the same. I look after him for the most part, but my mother had always been the one there when I needed someone to stand in front of me and defend me." When she thought about Akire's mother holding a small snow leopard cub she smiled a little tilting her head to the side. It seemed like the ultimate love for any child to love them even if they were not in human form. Just to think of the dedication of his mother to raising her children impressed Mag a little and she wondered if she would ever be able to hold her own child even if it a wolf pup or lion cub or any other sort of creature. Even if it had wings or hooves or claws something told her she would still wince when they cried and that she would still feel their pain no matter what their body was. "Children find their mothers heart beat so comforting mostly because that is the first thing we ever hear while we are asleep in our mothers womb. That and her voice...I suppose the closest person to us in all our lives will ever be our mothers. After all they sacrifice so much just to bring us to this world, I have seen that first hand." Twirling about a few times in the field she giggled a little trying not to get dizzy. She knew from time to time it would be better if she took her head down from the clouds but it was so much fun to daydream all day long then never at all. When Akire talked about how magnificent she would be when singing she giggled a little and let herself nearly fall to the ground catching herself just in time. Looking up at him with dark curls hanging in her face from her small stumble she spoke happily, "The only way I can ever sore is on the words of my songs and sometimes I can fly so high I forget my feet have never left the ground." |

Akire listened to her speak with a fond smile planted firmly on his lips. His mother had always been there for him and his brother. No matter what. No matter when. She had always been the one to smile and listen to their tales of adventure as children, even if she disapproved of them, she always smiled and nodded at their stories. She would constantly push them to use their imaginations and told them that just about anything was possible. She was the reason that he strived so diligantly to protect those who were innocent. As he walked, he stared at the ground for a time, trying to force his thoughts away from his mother and her death. He cleared his throat and then nodded. "While your brother would have stood up for you in a battle or debate, your mother would have held you close and comforted you. Sometimes what we need isn't a protector, but rather someone who loves us most to see to our heart's needs." He said. His own mother had said something very close to that, once upon a time, and the fond memory made the corners of his lips quirk up in a half-smile again. He listened again as she spoke up about a mother and the kinds of sacrifices she made. It made his thoughts drift off to what it would be like to have his own wife, once again. To know that she put so much love and sacrifice into bringing a child, his child, into the world. "You know... sometimes I think about any distant woman in the future who might come to be the mother of my own children. Any woman willing to sacrifice so much, and potentially their own lives just to birth a child into the world, particularly my child, would be held in the highest esteem with the greatest of love. She'd deserve nothing less." He commented. It took him a moment to realize that he had actually spoken aloud and then he clamped his mouth shut, turning his attention back towards the city, which they were growing every closer to. Another hour or so, and they would be on it's doorstep. He smiled fondly at her words and then chuckled. "Well, you never know what the future will bring. Perhaps true and honest flight is somewhere in the future for you, you know? Wouldn't that be something?" He smiled again and then looked back at her. "Promise me something, if you ever do reach the clouds, you'll tell me exactly what the experiance was like? I can only imagine what it would be like to experiance that..." He let his thoughts trail off into their own musings and continued smiling. There was something about Mag that always seemed to bring out the best in his hopes and dreams. She had a way with words that opened up a whole new level of possibilities and to some extent, they gave him hope. Perhaps it was too much for him to dare dream of, but above all else, he wanted the simple life he had once dreamed of for himself. One with a wife and children. He doubted he'd ever be able to stop the work he did now, so he would need to find a woman who could deal with that. He wanted to snort at the thought of it. Right, he wasn't asking for much. |

She smiled when he told her that sometimes it was not a protector that was needed but someone who just loves you. She had to agree with that, Mag was above all things a loving girl who enjoyed having someone put their arms around her when she was sad or laugh with her when she was happy or playful. Her mother had been the person who had loved her most and thinking of not having her around anymore sent a cold chill down her spine as if someone had just walked over her grave. Looking up with worry she asked herself, "So then my mother had been the one to love me...who will love me now? Who do I have to hold my hand when I feel sad or comfort me when I am in pain?" Her eyes wandered looking towards the city before her as she bit down on her bottom lip lightly and pondered about who she had left in her life now. She had no one, true she had a friend, a best friend...she had Akire. What was to happen when the time came when she needed more then a friend, when she needed to cry there would be no one there to hold her and help her. She would cry alone and that bothered her just a little. Akire started talking about his respect for his one day to be wife she turned back and looked to him again, her curls caught in the wind as it picked up across the field. The grass whipped around wildly like the waves of the ocean during a storm, sawing back and forth as the wind changed direction without warning. She could see now why he was the romantic one in the family. Every word he said Mag found herself holding onto just so she could keep him in her mind a moment longer, but even his sweet words about his life to one day be could not chase away her sudden feeling of being lost and alone. A sort of sad sting stabbed at her heart making her feel another chill run down her back but she refused to cry. Perhaps she was just a little home sick but she refused to let it bother her. She wanted to cry but she didn't, Mag would be stronger now. Even as she refused to shed a tear the sky began to darken as storm clouds moved in at alarming speed. Mag looked towards the sky with confusion and whispered, "Funny, the sky was blue just a few minutes ago." As soon as the words had left her mouth the clouds burst open and let a light rain fall upon them and the field around them. Mag flinched a little as the first cold drop hit her but then straightened back out and ignored it. It was nothing more then a sprinkle but she could not help to wonder why it always rained when she felt so sad. Akire spoke of her one day flying and telling him about how it was. She didn't want to tell him if ever she could fly, she wanted to show him and somehow she would...if ever she could. "I don't know about flying, not all half bloods get wings. If you get them you get them when you are around sixteen to twenty. I have passed those age markers. I don't think I ever will fly, but it is a lovely thought and a wonderful dream. The hope just is not there." |

Akire had to bite back the urge to tell her that he would love her if he'd give her the chance. The comment was on the tip of his tongue, but he refrained from saying it. The last thing he needed was to chase her away like all the rest of the men she had known had. He would rather have her as a friend then loose her completely. He cleared his throat to work past the lump that had formed in it and then shrugged. "I'll always be here for you, Mag. No matter what." He said, opting for the more simplified and easily askewed version of what he really wanted to say. He would let her take it as she would. He frowned at the fact that she seemed quite sad suddenly. That hadn't been his intentions at all. He had just been explaining the fact that he held any woman who would sacrifice so much in the highest of regards. He didn't understand what was so upsetting about comments like that, but he forced himself to turn around and keep walking and give Mag a moment of peace and quiet to organize her thoughts. Akire suddenly frowned as he looked up at the sky and the swirling mass of threatening clouds that were breaking their way through the area. His brows furrowed as he watched the alarming speed in which the weather turned abruptly sour. He cursed. This would likely delay them further. He turned around and heard Mag whisper something under her breath and Akire sighed. "We should likely try to find somewhere to take shelter of the thunder and lightning start up too. It's dangerous to travel in weather such as that." He commented as he looked up at the sky with a frown planted firmly on his face. Nonetheless, he kept their pace, picking it up a little as he worried over the weather. Akire glanced back at her comment about flying. His mind began working suddenly, and he smiled briefly. He had learned the terrain of the surrounding area quite well, and remembered specific landmarks around him that he used as markers for the passage of distance. He knew exactly what he could do to help Mag out and at least give her the illusion of flying. He remembered it happening to him once before. He knew that it was likely nothing like the real thing, but it was a simple gesture that might help her cope with the fact that she likely wouldn't grow wings. He continued pushing on, without making a comment about her lack of hope for ever flying. He would see to it that she would fly someday. Within a short while, they were approaching the city laid out before them in all its grandeur. He glanced back at Mag as they came upon the looming walls of the first structure and smiled over at her, even as the gentle flow of rain pelted down on them. "Welcome to Avalon City." He said cheerfully. |

She was happy at least she would have Akire to run to when she felt bad or sad. It would not be the same as her mother but she had a feeling she would grow to find it just as comforting. She put her arms around herself looking up at the rain that sprinkled upon them lightly. It made her hair just slightly wet but just enough to make her curls heavy. It seemed when her curls were weighed down and became more wavy she took on a more mature and beautiful appearance. That childish wonder was still trapped in her eyes but she became a woman it seemed in only seconds. Wrapping her cloak around herself tighter she looked at Akire and asked, "Are you cold, I can give you my cloak. I am quite accustom to the rain you know." When he mentioned taking shelter from the storm Mag looked down at the ground and shrugged, "Sorry...sorry for the rain. I always bring the rain, I don't know how but it always rains when I am around. It's my fault but I have no control over it. I think it rains when I am sad, a little thing that happens because of my angelic blood. Just like the electricity thing. Whenever I am nervous or angry I have been know to...give people a little jolt or a spark." Her eyes moved back up to the sky and she wished for Akire's sake that she was able to make it stop but she had no control over that. She just knew she made it rain when her heart was heavy and she wanted to cry. When she looked back up she saw the massive walls to the city and her eyes grew wide with wonder as her jaw dropped a little. The entire city was greater then she had ever imagined, the largest structure she had ever seen. Sure the buildings did not reach as high as the trees in the forest had but they were bigger then any building she had ever seen. Akire welcomed her to the city and she wanted to say something but her breath had been taken away. Putting her head back she looked to the top of the first massive building and panted, "My goodness...I never imagined the city was...so...so...big. I feel like an ant compared to these buildings." In comparison to the city her village had been so small. A tiny part of a large world that she was beginning to see and learn about. Was her innocents fading...no, never. Her innocents would never go away but her strength and confidence would build over time. This was the first step in her life to build upon a new life, a better life where she would be more use in the world. Mag looked back at Akire and spoke to him in her soft sweet voice, "Thank you for bringing me to this place Akire. It is a look into the world I never knew existed...the world where you are. I'd rather be in this world then back home without you." |

Akire shook his head at her. He wasn't cold. His body was accustomed to colder weather. He was a snow leopard. Nintey percent of the time he found himself overheating where most people were wandering around in light cloaks to fend off the chill. He didn't, however, appreciate the rain overly much. It couldn't be helped. He was part feline, and his first instinct was to complain about the fact that it was so difficult to dry out furr without it smelling like someone's dirty old boots. He kept those thoughts to himself, however and just smiled at her. "I'm fine." Akire looked curiously over at Mag. Her own little abilities got him wondering about any potential he had. It seemed that from a long line in his own family. his relatives seemed to acquire some of their own little special talents. His brother was able to communicate with animals, his mother had been able to fortell, and to some extent, control the weather. His father had had the uneering aim. He never missed a target with his throwing knives no matter how little he actually tried to throw them. Akire seemed relatively plain and normal in comparison. He frowned at the thought but decided to push it away. There was no used dwelling on things you didn't have. "Mag, the rain doesn't bother me. A jolt of electricity might be interesting on its own though." He said, offering her a charming smile before turning back to the city before them. "I really don't mind it at all. It could be worse." He stated with a shrug of his shoulders to show her that he really didn't mind overly much. He was human, not feline at the moment, and that meant that he didn't have any fur to worry about. Akire smiled at her enthusiasm. He knew she wouldn't have been prepared for the city itself, but seeing her eyes light up the way they did was reward enough for him. He nodded slowly. "I felt the same way when I saw it for the first time. Actually, I felt so awkward when I first came to Avalon. I'm not from this land originally." He smiled again at her, knowing she likely had already picked up on that. His dialogue was different from that of those native to Avalon. He had a slightly different accent than those around him, and some of his wording was slightly different than those around him. To him, it wasn't that noticable a difference, while those around him always seemed to notice instantly. "Everything seems so strange at first, but you'll grow used to it." He comforted her. He turned back towards the city and smiled again. "You're most welcome." He said gently, trying not to let himself get overly excited about the statement she made about not wanting to live in a world where she had never met him. His heart rate betrayed his lack of enthusiasm, however, when it picked up and did a little flip-flop in his chest. He cleared his throat and held his hand out to her with a friendly smile. "Shall we?" |

Mag smiled at him about the electricity thing, he might think so but it was hard getting people to like you when you are nervous to talk to them and reach to shake their hand only to give them the shock they would never forget. Usually it left them stunned or paralyzed for a moment but they always came too and often times screamed at her. It didn't happen often, mostly only when she had been a child and it made her wonder if she even still had some of those 'gifts' or if she had outgrown them. It would not surprise her if she was just as normal as an ordinary pure bred human...despite the making it rain thing. For all she knew there was nothing special about her and she was just as dull and uninteresting as the next person, but honestly she hoped she was not because she was the last person who wanted to be uninteresting. "Yes it could be worse, I could make it snow...well actually you would probably like that. I don't know quite how everyone else would feel about it." Looking back to the city the rain drops reflected in her eyes making them seem almost darker as if the storm clouds had come into those deep blue pools meaning to cause her tears to fall. Blinking a few times the illusion faded away and the darkness that had taken over her eyes vanished. She looked back at Akire as he talked about the city being a different world, she could see this already. It was so grand and a little dirty what with the black smoke from chimneys bellowing into the sky like a plum of death. True it was not as clean as the country but then again it was not necessarily dirty either. Mag took his hand and smiled lightly at him picking up her skirt just a little to keep anyone from possibly stepping on it and ripping it. She didn't need to have it for much longer but she needed it just until she had gotten a new one. The sound of many people talking all at once hit her as she took a few more steps causing her to move back a little and wrap her arm around Akires. She was not going to get separated from him, not in a million years. He was her safety, her comfort, her sanctuary. She didn't mean to seem pathetic but she needed him beside her to feel safe. "There are so many people." She said keeping her gaze low and holding him closer. "Alright, lets go...headfirst into the storm." |
