The idea was that if people had demi-races like half elf or half ogre or whatever, then they would apply to have a new trait added into the list - with reduced effects from either parent race. As I'd mentioned in the other thread, a character can take one racial trait only, but can pick an unlimited number of other traits.

As with all the other suggestions I'm making, people will be free to create their own, subject to staff approval. These accepted traits will be added into the list for easy reference (Also so that you can't try and alter the attributes of your trait later). As things stand, this is a bare-bones list; I didn't want to waste too much time on it if the idea was going to be passed over. There should be enough to give you an idea, at least.

I've got survivalism
I think this is a really cool concept, and one that leaves lots of room for expansion and customization.

I'm very curious to see what Class traits will be had...

A rare albino mouse. Though if there are so many given out as prizes this year, one must wonder why they're dubbed 'rare'.

I think it would be common sense, no?

A dragon is going to have enormous strength, plus flight, but there is obvious weaknesses. You're on it's head, it's screwed.

Same thing for anything big.

For example, my character is probably going to be stronger than most characters out there, but not able to attack in rapid succession like others. (Assuming I am correct with the assumption most character have a rather average build but are pretty fast, whereas my character is powerfully built and can't run very far in his armor. But hey, I play more realistically than most, so, I don't know.)

Also, assuming the character has wings, a hole in the wing is going to hurt like all hell, and render them less useful. Plus it's difficult to flee with wings bogging you down, etc...

I am just going to throw this up in the air and say good idea, but I would much rather impliment a rule of common sense rather than a rule of traits.

Using carcasses as stepping stones.
Alas some people are born without common sense. And alot of those people can't read.

How would shapeshifting work? Would a wizard who casts shapeshift and assumes the form of a red dragon gain the physical traits of one, or would they simply turn into a dragon with human strangth?

I would assume that if this was implimented, the shapeshifter would gain the traits of whatever race he turned into, weaknesses and strengths.
Now, I don't see why a shapeshifter would gain 2 strength and lose 1 speed or agility or whatever it was.

What if he turned into a wolf, or a cheetah? Wouldn't they gain speed? Would about a lion? That would be a speed increase too no doubt.

Yeah, well, I think a rule of common sense would need to be applied for those who don't have it. That way if they don't use it, they can get a slap for being stupid.

I'd intended to add a 'shape shifter' racial trait, which I've now done. The other one is only related to contracted lycanthropy.

When using any kind of Polymorph-based ability, the character may choose to assume a new trait based on his new form. However, they will also retain the weaknesses associated with his base racial trait.

Well i'm not sure where my thoughts stand or where to put then, they're also quite meddled so bear with it.

I like the idea that if you're of a certain race, and play as such, you get a couple of things.

Like the concept of speed/strength, don't like the practice, takes away the freeform Avalon's been know for.

also saying you can customise it to each race, doesn't quite seem to work in my head. You're doing it to prevent people making their charries uber stronge or whatever, but, um... bahh... I mean, Kael is a lycan (closes being Werewolf), due to the tiger i've played faster than average (feline; both speed and reflexes) and stronger than average (tigers are quite stronge after all), weak against silver, hybrid and animal foms, no particular element more effective against him (as aposed to his magic). so that would be something like:
Weretiger
Polymorph Self (one two form, night only at will)
+x Strength when transformed
+x Strength when human
+x Speed when transformed
+x Speed when human
Weakness to silver
Weakness to light element

Which looking just doesn't seem right. Noone's ever told me Kael (physicaly) is unfair, yet put like that, as a new member, i'd probably be yelled at for removing most disadvantages yet keeping (and adding) some. The best way i see, would be to give discounts to corosponding spells. but that doesn't work, cause then you'd have to remove trading within your own acounts.

i've always gone as fairly as i could, having brought speed, Night Sight, light heal, polymorph self, to represent natural abilities as we've always should. catlike reflexes, cat seeing in dark, better than average healing...

though that doesn't quiet work as well as it did, with the dispell magic sort of things. perhaps having such spells marked alone next to it that it could be something like "natural" generic upgrade of a handful of spells (like speed, strength, polymorph self) costing +50 or so gold but changes from "magic" type to "special", cause i'll say now, unless it's a god or elder using Alter reality to do so, Kael won't be changing back to human form by any mortal means (unless of cause someone gets a custom of revers lycanthropy... but that's a compleatly differant thing)

And, um... i'm sure there was more, but i've lost myself (as you can probably tell), so i'll add it if i can think about it

bit from the c-box as it may be a little easier to understand:
Kael: those tables are mainly for fighter abilites... Kael's physicaly dagerous, both stronger than normal and faster (speed & reflex) even in just human form, yet i wouldn't be able to actualy reflect that as Kael'd would be unlikey to get any fighter abilities

Kael: (and i don't want him to for that matter)

Card Captor Asche: But still, the system is a little silly. It's meant to prevent people overpowering themselves, but as has been stated, if people think it's too overpowered, then they just don't RP with them. [Note:I agree with this coment compleatly]

Kael: but that's also the thing, as new peopel come what are we gonna say "oh, here's all the stat things for making a charry... but hey compleatly ignore them if you want, they only mean something if both parties want to use it"

Kael: the ability level system is good, in concept but it just doesn't work for avalon as a free form site

Key point i think i've overlooked, I'd have to say i oppose this.

The 'Were Wolf' trait is listed under 'Other Traits', so you can combine it with a racial trait and any number of 'Other Traits' until you get close to the desired effect.

I can only say again that you're free to suggest your own trait instead of the ones listed (Which were given only to give a basic illustration); and if you say 'Well I can't think of any weaknesses that my character would have', then that means your character is unbalanced - overpowered. That's all there is to it; balance. I'm sure you could think of something to give in exchange for the extra strengths. You just have to be reasonable.

I'm really not interested in the idea of a 'free' form game; I would much prefer that there was some structure to base things on, as this reduces the number of instances where people will say 'My character is stronger and faster than everyone else just because I have an enormous ego', without having anything to base it on, as this just results in petty bickering which can be mostly resolved with something like the proposed system. In any case, this site was never completely free form to begin with; the only way to make it so would be to abolish all the shops completely, which, incidentally, I had suggested once before in favour of approving individual profiles - though no one else was interested in that particular course.

Anyway, since you aren't required to take any trait at all (This aspect is optional, as noted), you can keep your character as it is in your particular case just by deciding not to utilise this feature.

The Good My'thyrian
Seeing as I've been meaning to find a place for this, if LJ would be so kind as to consider my most humble of suggestions:

My'thyrian

+2 to base strength
+2 to base speed
Males strong against darkness and weak against light (.5 damage from dark and 1.5 damage from light)
Females weak against darkness and strong against light (.5 damage from light and 1.5 damage from dark)
All My'thyrian have the spell limit incurred by fighter abilities reduced by one
All My'thyrian take 2x elemental (fire, ice, earth, wind, etc.) damage from respective spells.
Males cannot use Light-based spells.
Females cannot use Darkness-based spells.
