Character Traits; Part IV

Ok. Well, this is a simple idea I'm putting forward to give choice of character race some kind of meaning in the combative environment. 'Traits' are things which a character may choose to include in their profile or inventory at no cost. They confer small bonuses by way of free abilities and unique talents in exchange for fixed weaknesses that can be exploited by others. Each trait has a name, such as 'Elf' or 'Cleric', but you are not required to be of that race or class in order to use that trait (With certain exceptions, such as the 'Dragon' trait). They are just the things that naturally match up with the listed ability/weakness set. By the same token, even if the character is an elf, they are not required to take the 'Elf' trait if they do not wish to.

Any trait which lists +/- strength/speed is referring to gained or lost levels of the Fighter Strength and Fighter Speed abilities, which are detailed in the 'Fighter Abilities' suggestion.

As for the attributes 'Weakness to cold iron' and 'weakness to silver', assuming this idea was implemented, then weapons made of the appropriate materials would be added into the shop also.

I thought about including Class traits as well, but I've yet to think of anything usable.

As with all the other suggestions I'm making, people will be free to create their own, subject to staff approval. These accepted traits will be added into the list for easy reference (Also so that you can't try and alter the attributes of your trait later). As things stand, this is a bare-bones list; I didn't want to waste too much time on it if the idea was going to be passed over. There should be enough to give you an idea, at least.

To clarify: THIS IS NOT A COMPLETE LIST. Again, unlisted races can be suggested and approved as needed. This includes racial ability sets that differ from the ones I'e provided.

Racial Traits
Elf
  • -1 Strength
  • +1 Speed
  • Spell limit incurred by fighter abilities is reduced by one

Dwarf
  • +1 Strength
  • -2 Speed
  • Can use three Basic level fighter abilities, regardless of the number of spells known.

Demon
  • +2 Strength
  • Immunity to either burning, freezing, shock, acid or dark-elemental damage (Pick one)
  • Weakness to cold iron
  • Weakness to light element
  • Weakness to one other elemental type (Pick one)

Devil
  • +2 Strength
  • Immunity to either burning, freezing, shock, acid or dark-elemental damage (Pick one)
  • Weakess to silver
  • Weakness to light element
  • Weakness to one other elemental type (Pick one)

Dragon
  • +10 Strength
  • -4 Speed
  • Free elemental breath weapon
  • Weakness to one elemental type (Pick one)
  • Weakness to weapons with 'Dragonslaying' enchantment
  • Trait is negated if character takes any form other than dragon. Weaknesses remain

Draconian
  • +2 Strength
  • Weakness to one elemental type (Pick one)
  • Weakness to weapons with 'Dragonslaying' enchantment

Giant
  • +3 Strength
  • -1 Speed
  • Cannot use Psychic Shield
  • Fighter Resistances limited to 2

Fae
  • Two free levels of the Shelter ability, on top of any already possessed
  • -2 Strength
  • Weakness to cold iron

Shape Shifter
  • Polymorph Self
  • Weakness to silver
  • -1 Strength
  • -1 Speed
   


Race Variants
Demon, Variant I
  • +4 Strength
  • -3 Speed
  • Immunity to either burning, freezing, shock, acid or dark-elemental damage (Pick one)
  • Weakness to cold iron
  • Weakness to light element

Dragon, Variant I
  • +10 Strength
  • -8 Speed
  • Free elemental breath weapon
  • Weakness to one elemental type (Pick one)
  • Weakness to weapons with 'Dragonslaying' enchantment
  • Immunity to weapons without 'Dragonslaying' enchantment or elemental advantage
  • Trait is negated if character takes any form other than dragon. Weaknesses remain


Other Traits
Werewolf
  • Polymorph Self (One form, night only)
  • +2 Strength when transformed
  • -1 Speed when transformed
  • Weakness to silver
  • Weakness to light element

Vampirism
  • Incognito Spell
  • +1 Strength
  • +1 Speed
  • Bonuses negated by sunlight
  • Damaged by sunlight
  • Weakness to light element
  • Weakness to holy water

Psionic Focus
  • Character can use Psychic Shield even if they have Psychic-type spells.
  • Charater treats opposing Psychic Shield as Level 2 Asylum.
  • Opposing Asylum ability is reduced by one level of effectiveness.
  • -2 Strength
  • -1 Speed
  • Cannot use magical- or physical-type spells.

Practiced Spellcaster
  • -3 Strength
  • -1 Speed
  • Opposing Shelter ability is reduced by one level of effectiveness
  • Character can use spells without a spell container

Elemental
  • Character gains immunity to or absorbs damage of one elemental type except for earth (Pick one)
  • Character takes critical damage from one other elemental type, except for earth (Pick one)
  • The elemental weakness may be substituted for a weakness to either psychic- or magical-type spells, which negates any defences that the character has against them
  • This trait can be taken multiple times, but must apply to different types each time

Undead
  • +1 Strength
  • Treated as having the 'Bastion' ability active at all times
  • Weakness to light element
  • Damaged by healing spells, abilities and potions

Natural Power
  • Strength +1
  • Effectiveness of Fighter Resistances reduced by one level

I guess that this is optional though ( i.e. you can have a character as part of a race but not apply the racial traits? )

One thing I forgot to include in the original post: You can only pick one racial trait per character. However, they can pick multiple traits from the 'Other Traits' list.

Interesting concept, but one thing I'm wondering: what exaclty do the numbers mean? Given that this is text-base RPing, there's going to be a lot of subjectivity in how people interpret these +/- numbers. So I'm not sure how much they will mean, in terms of ...y'know, the influence on a character's IC situation...

Well, there are already silver throwing knives. (Although those are pure silver making me doubt their effectiveness as throwing weapons based on the high density and soft metal.)

I also have to wonder, with psionic focus, when you said that they cannot possess any magical type spells, does that include charm? Because charm/dominate seems to be the most steriotypical psionic power.

Humans don't get any bonuses for race, as they are considered the 'standard' by which all others are judged. They don't have any noticable strengths, but they don't have any weaknesses either.
