Poised to strike...

The flamed javelins would continue to attack, noticeably pausing for ten seconds after attacking them for five. They need to move and fast. While the interval remained the same, the number of javelins were increasing and they may not be able to catch up in defending themselves. Upon moving on, they should be able to see a red jewel embedded on the ground in the middle of the room. It was glowing bright with power obviously was the source of power of the chamber that was trying to rid of them in a blazing scorching death. |

While Xue used his sword to knock the de-flamed javelins off course, another couple of columns of fire rose from the ground and from them, more flamed javelins spawned and sprung forth to spear the travellers of the caverns. Nayéla realised the would be unable to defend against an onslaught of them as they were potentially limitless in supply. If she knew that there were only a few, she would enclose both herself and Jian in a shield and wait it out but with such magic at play, it could go on for years. "We have to go, now" she called out to Xue. The air grew more and more damp as time passed which, while solving the immediate heat problem, it introduced its own - low visibility. Also, once the immediate cooling effect wore off, it would get very hot and humid rather quickly. |

There would be no argument from Xue Jian about leaving. The problem with that course of action was determining just where they should go. There was no exit that Xue Jian could see, although admittedly, his attention was focused primarily upon deflecting the barrages of javelins that flew at them, reducing his ability to be observant about the rest of the room. It wasn't long before he noticed the ten second interval between attacks, but it was the ever increasing number of javelins in each wave that really had him concerned. He knew that soon there would be too many to deflect, but he kept at it all the same. "Lead the way, Raven, and I will follow," Xue Jian answered her command. Sweat began seeping from his pores as the room became uncomfortably humid, and as visibility decreased, the spirit sage would find himself relying more on sound than sight, listening for the tell tale rush of air that would give away the direction of a flame pillar and allow him to direct the spinning spirit sword to the right position for deflecting javelins. |

The jewel (now visible to their sights because of the bright light it emitted) glowed with power as the attack on the two 'guests' continued. It didn't help that the other geysers were now shooting out some toxic hallucinatory gas. It won't be long before the deadly mix of heat and psychosis would fill up the cave. The javelins were still flaming but they were growing in number. The other pillar that caused a heat wave had taken the form of a fiery serpent swirling about in the cavern ceiling. It made the temperature rise faster that than the rate it was a while ago. |

Among the mist that now lay thick in the air, a red light could still be seen surrounded by a fading red haze as the light from it was refracted from the water in the air. Without any other indication of where to go in regards to an exit, Nayéla went to investigate, knowing Jian would be in tow. The source of the light was some kind of jewel, embedded in the ground, glowing vibrantly red most likely owing to red being the core colour of the precious stone. It was not unknown for magical power to be stored in such a jewel and the glowing was in all likelihood an indication that, if it was storing it, power was being drained from it. The jewel was settled flush with the ground so the mage used a couple of magical explosions to create some handholds either side of it while also hopefully loosen it from its mounting. Half kneeling, half leaning over, she wrapped her digits around the jewel and attempted to pull it free. |

Xue Jian followed Raven closely as she moved toward the center of the room, where a glowing red jewel had been set into the floor. He didn't have time to take a closer look though, as fiery javelins continued to fly their way in ever increasing numbers. He was now having to use his steel sword to swat away javelins that got past his spinning spirit sword. As he turned to and fro to defend against the incoming projectiles, he noticed that Raven was trying to dig out the jewel and wished he could help her somehow. Unfortunately his attention was occupied completely by the javelins, and to make things worse, a flaming serpent could be seen flying around near the ceiling of the cavern. The temperature rose significantly with its appearance, which was about the only reason why Xue Jian thought it was real. Perhaps it was his imagination ... or maybe it was just heat haze, but the room was starting to become blurry. The incoming projectiles no longer looked like just javelins to him. Now they looked like miniature versions of the serpent above as well. The air was stifling, and his concentration was beginning to wane. A sharp pain burned the skin of his upper left arm. One of the javelins had made it past his defenses and grazed him. Another seared by his lower right leg, and he winced before redoubling his efforts. It was getting harder and harder to stop them all, and he began cutting corners now, stopping only the javelins that might hit Raven and worrying less about himself. "Whatever it is you're doing, my lady, I hope you finish it soon. I will not be able to keep this up much ... longer ..." |

The jewel would not budge! It seem as it is not easily removed. Nor did it feel as if it were loosened for a little bit. It felt as if it weren't a jewel embedded into the cavern floor at all! More like a part of it or like the tip of the iceberg, concealing something more enormous than what is shown. The onslaught would continue and would get worse with every passing moment. However, it can be seen that the flame javelins would more of target Xue Jian that it would to Nayéla. It was a strange sight and was easily noticeable had it not been for the distractions of the attacks. The flame serpent had suddenly breathed fire directly aimed at the two. But being that they were close to the jewel, the flamethrower strangely bended and avoided them. |

Spoiler: click to toggle Nayéla would have cursed if it would have done something to help the situation. The jewel was steadfast in its position.. as though it was attached to something far greater in volume beneath the surface. Rising back up to stand straight, she looked around as there must be a clue to how to escape this room and it was almost certainly to do with this jewel at her feet. The thought had crossed her mind that this was merely a trap though. Looking up, she just caught the fire serpent above her breathing fire but before she could raise her own shields, the flame struck a barrier of some sort and deflected around both herself and Jian - and the jewel. Turning, she grabbed Xue's clothing and pulled him so he stood next to her and also next to the precious stone of red. While doing so, she also dropped her "wall of void" which had been stripping the javelins of their flame. Prepared to raised her shields at the last moment, she did nothing as the javelins went to strike.. but disintegrated into nothing but a wisp of smoke nothing more than few feet away from them. The jewel was protected from fire by something. One javelin had passed this space a moment ago but it had been flameless. Turning back to the jewel, she raised her hand out slightly and directed her palm directly to the crystal. A jet of fire erupted from just in front of the surface of her skin but the tip did not reach the jewel but instead dissipated. The quite skilled spellcaster could feel the jewel being protected and pushed harder. The jet crept forward until it licked the surface of the crystal.. |

Raven's intervention was timely, as Xue Jian was nearly at the end of his ability to keep up with the javelins. As she pulled him close, the spirit sword vanished and he slumped. Were it not for the strange protection around the jewel, the last volley of javelins would have struck him unhindered, unless Raven protected them both with her powers. In truth, Xue Jian barely noticed what she was doing. Between fatigue and the toxic fumes, it was all he could do not to fall down right there. Through lidded eyes he watched as Raven seemed to be trying to melt the jewel in the ground with magical flames of her own. Had he greater presence of mind at the moment, he might have better appreciated the irony that they were somehow being shielded from the javelins and the fire serpent by the very thing they apparently needed to destroy. |

It took a great struggle but the flame soon touched the jewel. The jewel then started to absorb all of the flame, including all those that were being hurled at them. Even those from the geysers were being absorbed into the jewel as it glowed with much luminosity. It would be wise of them to stay clear as the jewel was somewhat turning into a small black hole that was starting to pull in everything. ~sorry it's short~ |

As the jet of flame touched the jewel, the jewel suddenly began drawing the jet of fire into it. However, it also began drawing on her magic in the process so in response, she cut the stream as quickly as she could. Turning to look at Jian, she saw that the other flames in the room were also being drawn towards the centre, towards the surface of the jewel. However, their path was indiscriminate of obstacles as they surged forth and Raven felt a distinct pull on her body, as she was also being pulled towards it. Naturally, her reaction was to move away from it so she raised her magical shield around herself and Xue to protect against the incoming fire and from the ground sprouted several tendrils. These would entwine around their feet and ankles to at least anchor them in place but also gave enough movement to allow them to try to pull away from the all-attracting jewel. |

As Raven pushed her flames upon the jewel, Xue Jian could only continue to watch helplessly, unable to be of any assistance. Standing up was about all he could manage at the moment and barely at that. When the jewel finally succumbed to her power, it switched gears and began drawing everything into itself. Were it not for Raven's shield and the tendrils she summoned that wrapped around his feet, he'd have surely been pulled into the jewel along with almost everything else in the chamber. Despite his fatigue, he knew instinctively to move away from the jewel now, and so he used every last ounce of will to force his legs to move, slowly stepping away from the center of the room while staying as close to Raven as he could without getting in her way. |

The jewel continued to constantly maintain a hard pull on the two. It was like a miniature black hole that had suddenly erupted in the midst of the cave. the jewel glowed ever so brightly as it absorbed much of the energy in the cave. It glowed into a blinding orb before it had suddenly exploded in a deafening and blinding nova. Then nothing. The whole place was suddenly nothing. A simple chamber with rocks and no flames. It was as if you had woken up from a sleep by the bright light. No fatigue, no injuries. Nothing. It was as if the memories of a while ago were just your imagination. However, there was a door where the jewel was. A strange door that seemed to be made of teeth. Looking up, you'll see that it looks more of a demonic skull. But there are no other entrances or exits. |

The pull of the jewel was of such a magnitude that the mage was nearly crawling on the ground while still only being on her feet, only a foot or so of distance separated her shoulders from the ground. The tendrils which held her feet were steadfast and provided enough anchorage to prevent the two from being dragged into the void. After what seemed like many minutes of struggling against the pull, there was a sudden surge which pulled Raven upright before stopped completely for a moment. However, the inertia made her instead fall slightly backwards before the jewel exploded. The shock-wave which emanated slammed her into the ground, the tendrils which had saved her life not a moment ago now acting as little more than a pivot point. Naturally trying to break her fall with her hands caused her to graze her palms, wrist and forearm. Climbing to her feet, trying to ignore the sting of injury, her initial thoughts were of the safety of the swordsman who travelled with her into these caves. |

Xue Jian too had fallen to the ground, hanging on to the tendrils for dear life when the jewel suddenly erupted with blinding light. Then the jewel and the fires were gone, and he felt strangely ... better. That's when he realized his fatigue and his injuries were gone. It was quite disconcerting ... like waking from an all too realistic dream. He pushed himself up and saw that Raven was down as well. Scooting over to her, Xue Jian took note of the skull-faced door only briefly before checking on her. "My lady, are you alright? Let me help you up," he said, reaching out to offer her his assistance. (OOC: Sorry, short one.) |
