Xue Jian had started off traveling north out of Cithaelian, hoping to find his way to Siantos, where he meant to buy some of their famous bread. Unfortunately, he'd never been there before, and so he didn't realize that he'd have to cross an immense stretch of grassland to get there. The merchant from whom he'd asked directions hadn't said anything about that. Of course, the man had also failed to mention that dragons roamed said grassland, which Xue Jian found to be a sorely gross oversight.

And that was how Xue Jian found himself screaming bloody murder while fleeing from a dragon that looked big enough to eat him in one bite. The only reason he wasn't dead already was that despite it's size, the creature was really just a baby, and so it was not much of a hunter yet. Under better circumstances, he might have even considered it cute.

Of course, none of that made Xue Jian feel any better about his current predicament. The baby dragon could still breathe fire enough to ruin his day ... permanently, and it was definitely getting plenty of practice in there. Personally, Xue Jian preferred to stay alive rather than roasted, but he hadn't found a way to communicate that to the beast yet.

Then a blast of heat emanated just to the rear, motivating him to run a little faster. Unfortunately for him, fast running and tall grass were a bad combination, since the ground became rather difficult to see at such speeds. As such, Xue Jian hit a patch of uneven dirt and lost his footing, falling to the ground face first.

The baby dragon loomed over him victoriously, opening its mouth to flambe him alive, and Xue Jian thought that of all the ways to die, this was not the one he would have chosen for himself.

The noon sun beat down upon the grasslands with vigor, causing the ground to heat up almost excessively due to the complete lack of any cloud cover to absorb the rampant, solar rays. The view, in some places, shimmered as columns of heated air rose and pushed their way upwards, almost yearning to return the the heats place of origin, the burning star that this world, and everything in it, orbited. The weather itself could easily drain those who had come unprepared, even if they were not expending much energy traversing the lands. Usually though, traversal would be quick and under shade and done by cart pulled by horse or preferably Ox, who would forge headlong as though their life depended upon it. In some cases, it did.

From a rocky outcrop on which she stood at its peak, she watched as the tall grass moved and every so often, some part of a Dragon would appear above the heads of the grass. To her left, something caught her eye as the grass waved and shuffled not once, but twice in rapid succession and not only in one place. Turning her head slightly to get a better view, she caught a voice, one of a human at least, shouting loudly but too distant to hear any words. Perhaps there were no words to hear.

She watched for a moment and as she did, the disturbances stopped and the head of a young Dragon reared up from the sea of grass. Without another thought, she quickly teleported from the outcrop to just in front of the Dragon, which happened to be within arms reach of the object of the Dragons attention. Barely raising her shield in time, the Dragon released a torrent of fire which deflected around the translucent blue half orb which separated the two from a fiery death and set the dry grass at either side alight. Taking a small step back with her right foot, she half turned to what she saw to be a man, lying on the ground, and offered him her hand. If he were to take it, she would teleport them both back to the outcrop.

Just when Xue Jian thought he was going to end his days as baby dragon barbecue, a figure appeared out of thin air. The dragon's fire spewed forth from its mouth, but the flames did not touch the figure. Instead they bent to either side, setting the grass ablaze in a semi-circle around the figure and himself. Xue Jian didn't care though. His bacon had just been saved, and for that he was thankful.

The figure turned and offered him a hand, and he realized that it was a woman by her state of dress. The elaborate feathered headdress struck him as unique, if a little strange, but he was in no position to be making fashion judgments. He took the woman's hand, and suddenly the dragon was gone and they were no longer standing in the grass. Their feet were planted firmly on an outcropping of rock, but he could still see the great expanse in green in every direction around them.

Releasing the woman's hand, he took a small step back from her, making sure he didn't fall off the rock in the process, then bowed to her formally, his voice still shaky from his being flustered and out of breath.

"Thank you, my lady," he began. "You saved my life back there, I ... uh ... thank you again."

He needed to calm down if he was going to speak with her properly, so he took a moment to do so, closing his eyes and gasping big gulps of air. Gradually, his heart beat and breathing slowed to a more normal rate, although his hands were still shaking from the tension of the adrenaline rush.

"Excuse me," he added. "I must apologize. You put yourself at risk for my sake and I cannot even thank you properly."

They were back, safe and sound on the rocky outcrop in the blink of an eye. The man whom had just been rescued withdrew his hand from the mages and took a step back, before bowing to her in gratitude.

"Thank you, my lady, you saved my life back there, I ... uh ... thank you again." he wheezed.

His excursion had made him short of breath, hardly surprising considering that mere moments ago he was running for nothing less than his life. It was quite amazing what the human body could achieve when continued existence depended on it. It could be bashed, beaten and broken yet still fight on, if there was a will to continue living. While Nayéla watched on in silence, the man caught his breath and regained his composure before apologising.

"Excuse me, I must apologize. You put yourself at risk for my sake and I cannot even thank you properly."

Behind her, the baby dragon who had just lost its meal gave a small, undeveloped roar before slowly walking away from the fire that it had created in the grass.

"You are welcome." she responded to the man.

Turning to face the blaze which was quickly taking hold, she held her left hand out, palm forwards, towards the inferno. Almost instantly, the flames vanished into nothing as Nayéla removed all the air from that small area using her magic. She then made a gesture similar to that of a card dealer throwing a card but instead of a card appearing from her fingertips, a thin sliver of liquid did instead. As it passed through the air it gained in mass until it was of considerable size. It crashed into the ground and splashed over the area where the fire had been, preventing a possible re-ignition by the ambient heat.

"You are welcome," the woman responded.

Xue Jian watched as her attention turned away from him to the fire caused by the baby dragon. With nothing more than a wave of her hand, the fire was extinguished and the smoldering remains were soaked by water she conjured from nothing. Xue Jian was impressed to say the least. If it were him, he would have had to do it the old fashioned way with buckets and lots of running to the nearest water source.

"By the way, my name is Xue Jian. May I know the name of the one who saved my life?"

"By the way, my name is Xue Jian. May I know the name of the one who saved my life?"

Satisfied that there was no chance of re-ignition, save a deliberate attempt by herself, a dragon or another being, she turned back to the man who she had just rescued, who identified himself as a Xue Jian. His appearance was relatively unremarkable, simple cloth clothing adorned his frame giving an aura of humbleness to some degree. He did not seem to be a monk of any kind though and he was not defenseless, the pommel of a sword distinctly visible of his shoulder. Why he hadn't used it against the dragon was a mystery though. Perhaps fear had clouded his response or had he not wished to injure or take the life of the winged beast who had not yet took to the skies?

"I am Raven." she responded without any inflection of emotion in her voice.

This Xue Jian was quite fortunate that she had even been in the grasslands herself, let alone within earshot and in her line of sight. She would not have been here if that old woman at the market all those years ago had not directed her to come here. Perhaps this was the reason why this sword-wielder was also here, without company or transport.

"Why have you come here?" she asked, probing to find if his cause matched her own.

"I am honored to meet you, my lady Raven," Xue Jian replied to her introduction. With her head dress and clipped manner of speaking, it was slightly disconcerting to speak with her, but Xue Jian showed none of this, instead focusing on answering her second question.

"I was merely traveling to Siantos. I'd heard that they sell a very useful bread there, so I thought I'd pick some up. Nobody told me I'd have to cross an empty plain infested with dragons in order to get there."

The thought occurred to him that he'd been rather careless when he'd asked, so he rubbed the back of his head bashfully.

"Not that I'm complaining, my lady, but what about you? What brings you to a place like this?"

Nayéla had heard of the bread which Xue spoke off. It had such properties, physical or otherwise which would stave off hunger for an entire cycle of the sun. Whether it provided adequate nutrition for the entire time she did not know but the concept was as intriguing as its existence. Though she never felt hunger herself, it would most likely prove useful to have some at hand. However, she had other things to acquire at this moment in time.

"Not that I'm complaining, my lady, but what about you? What brings you to a place like this?" he inquired, rubbing the back of his head with his palm.
"I am searching for an object." was her, intentionally vague, response.

However, she would have been hard pressed to give any more detail than that. She herself was not entirely sure that which she sought but had been told that if she looked for it, she would find it - as though destiny itself had a hand in bringing the two together.

"I am searching for an object," Raven said vaguely.

Xue Jian tilted his head to one side with one eyebrow raised inquisitively. Duty required that he repay his debt to her somehow, so helping her in whatever she was doing seemed like a good way to start. It occurred to him then that for all he knew, she was looking for some kind of evil magic weapon, so he hoped it was just an old family heirloom or something equally benign.

"Perhaps I could help you find this object. What exactly is it you're searching for?"

As Nayéla answered his query, Xue raised his eyebrow and it was clear that while one question was answered, yet more were raised in its stead. His next question, an offer of assistance in finding the object was in all chance was merely a take on the opportunity to re-pay the debt, to some degree, which he probably felt he had gained due to the mage's previous intervention of a Dragons meal time. While she didn't hold him to such debt, she wouldn't disrespect him by declining.

"Of that I am unsure."

Nayéla turned around once again to look out onto the grassland where she had prevented Xue from becoming a main course. A slight breeze caused the grass to sway back and forth giving it a surreal, liquid-like appearance. As the wind swept over the outcrop of rock it caught Nayéla's hair causing it to undulate much like the grass that surrounded them. The wind died for a moment and she took the oppourtunity to add a further comment which Xue would have to be aware of if he was to assist her in the search.

"It may be a case of it finding me, as much as me finding it."

As Raven turned, Xue Jian's eyes were drawn to the horizon ahead of her, where in the distance, a majestic dragon seemed to be flying in their direction. Just as she spoke the words, "It may be a case of it finding me," it landed on another outcropping of rock, though much larger than the one upon which they stood, and seemed to do nothing but stare at them. Xue Jian blinked a moment in stunned confusion. It was almost too perfectly timed to be a coincidence, but what would a dragon want with them? Did it have something to do with Raven's mysterious object?

The dragon's posture seemed to indicate that they should approach. Eyes wide, Xue Jian raised a hand and pointed a finger at it.

"Pardon me, my lady Raven. I could be wrong, but I think that dragon wants us to come closer."[R4E]Missed that Naychan had already turned around. My bad![/R4E]

A tiny speck of black on the horizon had quickly approached, revealing itself to be a great and mature dragon. Possibly even an Elder dragon. As it go closer though, it wheeled to the side and took a huge rock within its talons as it came to rest on another of the rocky outcrops that littered these grasslands. With the area relatively heavily populated with Dragons, it left Nayéla's attention almost as quickly as it had entered, her focus was looking for anomalies or hints as to where she should go now. There were none.

At least, she didn't think so. Xue Jian, on the other hand, had not dismissed the Dragon so readily and had noticed the Dragon was giving the pair of travellers more attention than mere curiosity.

"Pardon me, my lady Raven. I could be wrong, but I think that dragon wants us to come closer."

My Lady Raven? Reminded her of how she was addressed while she had been the Princess of Avalon..

She looked over to the dragon and immediately understood how Xue came to such a conclusion. Immediately, it was if the Dragon was speaking to them in an inaudible language where the words could not be understood but the meaning was clear. Without even a moments hesitation, the mage rose up a few feet into the air and without a sound but with the grace of the ethereal, repositioned herself on the ground off the rocky protrusion which she had been upon with Xue. Now stood facing her rescuee with a slanted angle, she posed a question.

"Joining me?"

In the short time since Xue Jian had met Raven, he'd already seen a fair sampling of her power, but watching her levitate down to the ground below the outcropping still filled him with awe. It was not her ability to fly itself that impressed him, but the graceful ease with which she moved through the air. His own flying, he thought, was clumsy and amateurish by comparison, so when she asked him if he was joining her, Xue Jian nodded and climbed down off the rock the good old fashioned way, not wanting to embarrass himself.

Looking at the dragon waiting for them, he simply couldn't fathom what such a creature could possibly want from him, well ... other than to eat him like the baby from earlier. This led him to the conclusion that the lady was of more interest than himself. He just hoped that it didn't mind that he was tagging along.

"What do you suppose it wants from us?"

Such a simple gesture, the slight nod of the head, now essentially bound these two travellers to whatever fate awaited them upon their approach to the Dragon. With her non-chalant display of her magical prowess, it was probably safe to say that this swordsman felt relatively safe with the young but developed mage at his side. The dragon would have quite a battle on his hands if dinner was what he had in mind for these two travellers met by fate or just co-incidence.

Nayéla watched as he climbed down from the outcrop and she quietly mused to herself. While he looked almost at home with doing such a thing, when she imagined herself doing the same, she merely saw herself looking ridiculous. About as graceful as a mountain goat that had lost its footing.

"What do you suppose it wants from us?" he asked as he approached her.

As he came up beside her, she turned and began making her way towards the Dragon. Her strides were smooth and rhythmic because though she had magical means of transportation, she tended to walk from place to place if there was no immediate need to reach her destination so her graceful movements were well practised.

"It won't be weaving advice."

Raven began walking, as elegant in her steps as she had been in her flight down from the rock. Xue Jian fell in beside her, suddenly feeling overly conscious of his own gait as they crossed the grassy expanse that led to the dragon.

"It won't be weaving advice," Raven replied to his query, and Xue Jian blinked. Had she just made a joke? Her deadpan tone suggested otherwise, but he couldn't see any other way to take it. He laughed, albeit somewhat weakly, as he was still distracted by the ever looming form of the dragon ahead of them.

After some time, they began to close in on the large outcropping upon which the dragon stood, and its posture subtly changed. Xue Jian stopped walking then, although like before, he could not explain how he knew to do so. Before he could glance over to see if Raven stopped as well, the dragon moved again. This time it unfurled its huge wings, great beats lifting it off the ground and blasting them with gusts of wind. It hovered there momentarily until, with a powerful swing of its body, it smashed the end of its tail into the rock face directly in front of them.

Startled down to his bones, Xue Jian covered his face with his arms in reaction to the impact, but after a moment passed and nothing hit him, he realized that it had been an unnecessary gesture. Where the dragon's tail had struck, a cave mouth now appeared. The giant beast crooned at them, and gave a nod of its head, beckoning them to enter, before turning to fly away.

Watching blankly as it disappeared into the horizon, Xue Jian first shook his head, as if clearing it of a daze, then turned to look at his companion casually, as if nothing out of the ordinary had just happened.

"Well my lady, I guess that means we should go in."
