Afraid of the dark? Wait until you see what the light can do…
|
It was a little late in the afternoon by the time the weary mage had walked into town. With his simple coat and his book by his side. He seemed to to be that of a Chaplin, although mysterious. Dark walked along the path at a rather leisurely pace, not wanting to disturb the crowds of people, or the minstrels that played in the streets. He had arrived a bit earlier than he had expected and thus decided to take his time before heading off to the in, maybe even buy something. The priest continued on his way through the market for a while looking here and there at the different arts and sounds. It was then that a fun idea came to Dark's thoughts, "I wonder if they would like this?"... He spoke to himself. Manus stepped of to the side of the roadway and opened his book to a random page. He then lifted his free hand and placed it over his spellbook and raised it, taking the tome with up it. Using his Psychokinesis, he made the book start hovering around him almost unconsciously. Next Manus put on a light show by creating the Squall Sphere in his now free hands. As time went on, Dark went on to make other interesting tricks to entertain and awe the crowd... |

The Town of Bards was everything Xue Jian had been told and more, with music filling the air and performers of all kinds displaying their skills at every corner. He thought he could spend days walking the streets and not even see half of it all. His face filled with wonder, he certainly looked the part of a gawking tourist as he meandered down the main avenue, until he came upon a gathering of onlookers that stood out even in this town. Intrigued, Xue Jian tried to wade through the crowd as gently as he could, but eventually, he ended up having to push his way through to the front. Once there, he saw an ornately dressed man with silvery white hair and glowing eyes, casting a variety of magic spells for the crowd's entertainment. A book flew around the magus seemingly of its own accord and flashes of light danced and jumped from his hands, as if he was weaving a tapestry of lightning. The monk watched as the man continued to cast more spells and applauded for each new trick along with everyone else. Then a rough passerby accidentally pushed Xue Jian from behind, and he stumbled forward directly into the path of the man's flying book. Not wanting to ruin the performance, the monk swayed out of the book's path and waved his arms in a pattern from one of his martial forms, ending in a showy pose that made it appear as if he'd deflected the book and sent it flying back toward the magus. Of course, in reality he'd done no such thing. He had no magical powers. Xue Jian had simply blended with the book's existing movement and added some artistic flair. The audience applauded for this, believing it to be part of the show, so the monk looked the magus in the eye and gave a slight nod of the head, inviting him to continue. |

Afraid of the dark? Wait until you see what the light can do…

The stranger that stumbled into Dark's performance surprised him greatly. It seemed, with one fluid motion, he had turned what was a blunder into an act. Manus was quite amused by this and let out a smile as the man turned to him and nodded. It seemed that he wished to continue with the show, and Dark could not help but agree. The man looked to be a martial artist of some sort and his movements did not lie. This would be Dark's first encounter with such and truth be told, it was rather fun! The two continued their "duet" of sorts, Manus using his powers to compliment his new friend's abilities. Soon the show had moved into the middle of the street so that the monk could act more freely as lightning bolts danced across the ground. Some time passed and the crowd began to dwindle as the show was coming to a finish. The audience however, made sure too leave their thoughts of the show in their own way. A member of the crowd had passed around his hat so that each willing onlooker could give some charity. At the end, there was an overflowing old hat filled with an assortment of different coins laid at the two mens' feet. Once the two finished, Dark found himself overly exhausted from the massive amount of Æther that he had manipulated. So he proceeded to sit down on a nearby bench to relax as he complemented his companion, "That was a fantastic display my friend! Where did you learn such movements?" He asked. |

Xue Jian took a seat next to the magus, taking a moment to catch his breath. After performing for so long, his body was fatigued, but his mind felt refreshed. Such was the result of his grandfather's training. Movements that improved the body's inner functions rather than consuming or wasting them, cultivating inner strength and spirit. Now that the magus was no longer casting spells and he himself was no longer distracted by his own performance, he could see that the man's right eye did not open. Was there something wrong with it? The monk wondered about this even as the magus asked where he'd learned his martial arts. "Thank you for the kind words. My grandfather taught me all that I know, but my level is still not very high yet," Xue Jian answered humbly. "Your magical skills are far more impressive." |

Dark felt refreshed as well with this mans polite gestures and could not help bet let slip a small smile from his normally emotionless face. He then readjusted his hair and tied it back with a hair-tie from his coat. "I will agree that they may appear impressive. However, your abilities are also quite impressive... from my point of view." Dark sighed, twisted so that he was partially facing the man so that he could see him better with his good eye, then continued, "I am Dark Manus, Priest of Selena, Goddess of Magic. Would you be so kind as to share your name?" Manus asked curiously, "After all..." He picked up the hat that had been left behind for them, "You helped me gain this decent some and good half of this is yours friend." By this time the crowd had completely disbursed and the streets had gone back to its usual flowing pace once more. |

"My name is Xue Jian," the monk answered simply, having no titles to his name or deities that he worshiped. "And I assure you, my skills are nothing to be impressed by. It was mostly your magic that made the money." Despite what he'd said, Xue Jian wanted to accept the coin. Even half the hat was more than he usually made from three or four jobs combined. If he'd known that performing his martial arts could earn so much so quickly, he might have started doing it sooner, although admittedly, he truly did believe that it was the other man's magic that had drawn the crowd and not himself. Xue Jian then considered how his grandfather would react. The old man strongly believed in maintaining one's integrity and would likely look upon the use of his martial forms to entertain as exploiting them for personal gain. With that he sighed, knowing he'd have to turn down the money no matter what. "Keep the hat, Mister Manus. If you feel that to be unfair, you can pay me my share in lessons about magic instead of coin." |

Dark was intrigued by the way Jian refused to take any of the money, but he guessed that it could be a sense of honor that he followed. Manus liked it, but knew that it would not fill the monk's stomach, "How about I treat you to a meal then?" Dark drew out a black leather pouch from within his coat and poured the contents of the hat into it, "I'm almost certain that you would be hungry after a performance like that. And as for the magic lessons, I would feel better sharing over a cup of tea." Manus suggested. He then sighed and pushed himself up off the bench, feeling more willing to move now that food was on his mind. He then looked down to his accomplice, "And just to be mean. 'You' can pick the place." Dark said jokingly, "I'm sure anywhere will do." He said reassuringly. |

"I think I could force myself to accept a meal," Xue Jian quipped. "And if it's tea you want, then I think I know just the place." In truth, Xue Jian only knew the restaurant by reputation, but he'd found word of mouth to be a fairly reliable judge. At least as far as tea houses went, it almost never failed, and the monk doubted that the place he had in mind would be an exception. As Dark Manus stood, so did Xue Jian, and after a short walk, the pair made their way into the restaurant in question. The dining area was bustling with activity, which Xue Jian took as a good sign. The food and drink had to be at least decent in order to draw so many people. Once they were seated, Xue Jian ordered them a pot of high grade oolong tea, but otherwise allowed Dark Manus to decide on the food. Since the other man was paying, it was his way of not running up too high of a bill. The thought reminded him of an incident back in Eamor and he chuckled to himself. It hadn't been so funny at the time, but he was glad to be able to laugh about it now. When the tea arrived, Xue Jian immediately went to work preparing it. Hot water was provided in a large kettle set on a stand over a small oil flame to keep it warm. Two smaller clay pots of equal size were also provided, along with two drinking cups. At a fancier place, scent cups would have been provided as well, but Xue Jian paid their lack no mind. All of this, except for the kettle, sat on tray with a reservoir for retaining excess water that would inevitably run off during the brewing process. The first step was to wash the leaves, which had already been placed in the brewing pot by the restaurant. He filled the brewing pot with hot water to warm it along with the leaves inside, allowing them to open up. This first infusion was immediately poured into the second pot (or the 'well' as his father called it), then discarded into the reservoir. The second step was a repeat of the first, except this time Xue Jian allowed the water to steep in the brewing pot for about half a minute or so before transferring it to the well. From there, the now brewed tea was poured into the two serving cups instead of the reservoir, and Xue Jian offered one to Dark Manus with both hands. "Please drink, Mister Manus. Let me know if it's too light or too bitter, and I'll adjust it to your taste." To the uninitiated, it might have seemed like an unnecessarily tedious process, but to Xue Jian it was a simple thing. His father had always taught him that in order to sell high mountain tea, one had to be able to brew it to perfection, otherwise clients would doubt the quality of one's product. Xue Jian had learned this lesson well. But today, Xue Jian was looking forward to a different sort of lesson. The tea was served, and the food would arrive soon, so he tried not to look eager as he waited for Dark Manus to share his knowledge about magic. (( Just FYI, the tea brewing process presented above is real. I make it that way myself quite often. XD )) |

Dark watched as Jian went about preparing the tea. He was not expecting to witness such a lengthy yet interesting process. Dark grew intrigued as his friend performed the task flawlessly, his face filled with curiosity. After a short while, Jian handed Manus a cup of the freshly made tea and he took it thankfully, "Please, call me 'Dark', I'm not quite comfortable with the 'Mister' title, personally." Then Manus tempted a decent taste of the tea and was surprised by the refreshing feeling the liquid gave him, "I have a feeling that I'm going to become addicted to this." Manus mentioned before letting out a smirk at his own comment. Dark then changed the subject to that which he had promised, "I'm curious of how much you know about the mystical element known as æther?" |

Xue Jian grinned at Dark's appraisal of the tea, then drank from his own cup, nodding with understanding. The monk was already addicted to tea, so he knew very well how the magus must have been feeling at the moment. But such thoughts were quickly dropped as Dark asked him about æther. The question drew a blank look from Xue Jian, as he'd never even heard of the term before. "I'm afraid I know nothing about mystical elements, Dark," he replied honestly. "Could you explain it to me?" |

"Ah..." Dark recollected for a moment, "To put it simply, æther is the essence of my magic, without it, I would not be able to cast anything. Not even the smallest of spells. The best way I can think to describe it is that I am an artist and æther is my paint, my mind is a canvas, and my hands are the brush. I guess if you look at it that way, æther would come in a variety of colors, mine would be a dark color; like black or violet, maybe crimson." Dark spoke softly. He then took a moment to drink more of the delicious tea then continued, "However, some of the movements you made back at the performance were interesting and made me curious at to what "color of æther" you have..." |

Xue Jian listened carefully to Dark's explanation. This æther sounded very much like his own 'spirit force', although a great deal more versatile. Granted, Xue Jian still did not fully understand spirit force himself, having achieved only a low level as of yet, so he was not necessarily qualified to make the comparison. Still, he found the whole concept intriguing. Then Dark commented on his movements during their performance and the color of his æther, but Xue Jian was again stumped. "I'm not sure what you mean exactly, Dark. Is there a way to find out what my, uh ... color of æther is?" |

"Well no, it's not easy to determine one's "color" unless you have either heightened senses, or some supernatural ability that allows you to perceive one's aura. I also wonder if you even use æther at all." Dark then took yet another drink from his cup and placed it down near the center of the table, as it was empty. He then looked back to Jian as he continued his chat, "I however have no such abilities and thus I would have to see your talents firsthand to decipher them and categorize them to any "color". For all I know you could very well not be on the "spectrum"." |

Taking note of Dark's empty cup, Xue Jian refilled it from the well, then poured some more for himself. Dark explained more about æther and how it was difficult to discern one's color without certain special abilities. Xue Jian nodded to show he was paying attention even though he didn't really understand what that meant, but if the magus wanted to see Xue Jian using his abilities in order to make a determination through analysis, that could easily be arranged. "Then perhaps after we've eaten our meal, I'll give you a demonstration. What do you think?" Edited by Xue Jian, May 7 2009, 07:20 AM.

"That would be nice, but are you sure you wish to use such abilities right after having physically spent yourself on the street performance?" Dark wondered. He then took his cup once again and thanked Jian with a nod of his head and a smile. Drinking it joyfully he then placed it back down closest to him and continued, "I'm curious as to what interested you in "magic", I'll have to say, not many who know how to physically defend themselves ever seem to care about the arcane arts." |
