"Ah, you're here at last! I've been waiting for you!"

Xue Jian saw the elderly merchant waving him over and approached as quickly as he could without bumping anyone on the way. After some time, he stepped under the awning of the man's herb shop and bowed, holding out a carefully wrapped package with both hands. "Master Findley, your delivery, as promised. My apologies for the delay. As you can see, the streets are quite crowded tonight."

"Boy, with shoulders like yours, people will make way if you move with a purpose," Master Findley replied, taking the package from Xue's hands and replacing it with a small purse of coins. The young monk paid little mind to the amount. It would be small, but that was all one could expect as an errand runner, and a temporary one at that.

One of the first hard lessons he'd learned since leaving home was that traveling was very expensive, and earning money on the way was no easy task. Were it not for his experience selling tea for his father, he might have been reduced to begging for food or worse, thieving.

As things stood, he was grateful he could secure even the simplest of odd jobs.

"I will take heed of your words in the future, Master Findley," Xue answered politely, if not quite honestly. He appreciated the advice, but he was unlikely to make use of it anytime soon. His grandfather taught him to give people their space, and even if he was in a hurry, he tried to stick to those teachings as much as he could.

The old merchant gave him a knowing look, but made no issue of it. "Well, you go on then and settle down for the night, boy. It's getting late. Don't you stay out and spend all that money on women and booze, like the other youngsters around here!"

Small chance of that happening, Xue thought ruefully, as he bowed and took his leave of the shop. I don't drink booze, and as for women, I wouldn't even know where to begin.

What Momiji really wanted to know was, what was wrong with a good bit of thieving? Here and there, a girl had to do something to survive in a town where she would be trampled underfoot if she begged. They could hardly expect her to starve to death, because then her body would clutter up the streets, and god forbid that happen. Rolling her eyes, she skirted a couple people in the crowded street.

There wasn't much to do when there weren't people out - but today it was rather crowded and Momo had already turned a profit. "I shouldn't steal so much, one day I might get caught," she thought to herself, dodging a couple more people. Turned out, when you were short and dressed like a boy, everyone and their mother thought it was okay to casually run you over.

"Ey, watch yourself," someone had the audacity to growl, and received an icy glare in return. She knew that if she'd dressed as a girl, no one would have said anything of the sort to her ... but that was the price you had to pay for anonymity. Besides, she didn't want to be a target of mother's garnering for daughters-in-law.

With her cap hiding her hair, her slim frame and little curves allowed her to be the eighteen year-old lad that she'd always wished she could be (despite the advantages of being a female). It did not, however, allow her to brace herself, and when she ran into a man leaving a herb shop, Momo was easily knocked to the ground. "What the hell?" She shouted, from her seat in the dust. "Didn't your ma ever teach you to watch where you're walking?"

So it'd been her fault. Whatever.

Lost in thought, Xue Jian was surprised to feel someone bounce off of him as he stepped back into the street. That someone turned out to be a younger-looking boy who wasted no time dressing Xue down for the incident. The irony of the moment hadn't escaped him. Here he was planning to not take the old merchant's advice on pushing through crowds, but instead he ran someone down right out of the gate.

Lifting his arm up to scratch his head, Xue saw that the merchant's coin purse was still in his hand and stopped. Reversing the movement, he tucked the purse into the sash at his waist, then leaned over and offered a hand to the fallen boy.

"Oh ... uh ... I'm terribly sorry," Xue said, embarrassment showing openly on his face. The possibility that he wasn't at fault crossed his mind, but he let it go. There was no need to start throwing blame around for something so trivial. "Please, let me help you up."

It was not until she was sitting in the dust that she noticed the man who had (accidentally) knocked her off her feet was holding a coinpurse. "Damn. I could have robbed him," she thought sadly, watching as he tucked it away into his sash. "I should have realized that and been paying more attention before I ran into him." Well, there was no use in crying over spilled milk (or coins), and she shrugged off the emotion, focusing on the situation at hand.

When a hand was offered, she took it and pulled herself to her feet, crossing her arms 'cross her chest, and glaring again. "Yeah, well, what if I'd been carrying something? What if I've been robbed? Maybe you're a thief! I saw that purse go into your sash, I bet it was mine," she grumbled loudly. Oh, the irony of Momo accusing anyone of doing anything illegal. "You really ought to watch where you're going, otherwise someone might not be so kind as I am."

It wasn't that bad of a situation, though. Her cap hadn't been pulled off her head. He probably thought she was a boy, and there were people around them who were starting to give second looks to the man who had just been in the wrong place at the wrong time. "If I attract a crowd, I can rob them on my way out," she realized cheerfully. What a good end to a typically bad situation. Well, good for her.

At the moment the word 'thief' sounded from the youngster's mouth, people all around started paying attention to their little scene, and it was definitely not the good kind of attention. Xue tensed under the pressure from hard stares directed his way, instinctively realizing that he'd suddenly been dumped on a slippery slope that could land him in serious trouble if he didn't do something and fast!

"Now hold on there! This coin purse," he withdrew the object in question from his sash and gave it a hard look, just to be sure, "was given to me by the owner of this herb shop in exchange for delivery services rendered. If you don't believe it, I'm sure Master Findley will verify my claim."

Although he was obviously flustered, Xue made sure to speak loudly enough to be heard by the surrounding onlookers. Hopefully that would settle them down, and they could all avoid a visit from the city watch. The watchmen were not known to be friendly to suspects whether they were guilty or not, and even though he'd done nothing wrong, Xue didn't want to try his luck with them.

In a lower voice, he said, "Perhaps you'd like to join me at the pub around the corner ... before the watch comes." He placed particular emphasis on that last part, then for good measure decided to play the gracious host. "I'm buying ..."

Turned out that everyone and their mother was skittish about the word "thief", including whoever this character was. He seemed nervous, and mutterings in the crowd was enough to confirm her theory that people would pick up on her words. "I am a rather clever girl, aren't I?" She thought to herself, arrogantly, and resisted the urge to smirk. No one walked into Momo and got away unscathed.

He was obviously trying to defend himself, and she rolled her eyes. "The old man? Why, you probably cheated him out of his money, thief," she retorted, eyes lighting up when he took out the purse. Just the sight of it was good enough for a greedy little amateur thief such as herself, though she could hardly take it in front of all these people. Incoming whistles alerted her of the guard that was on it's way, and for a moment she evaluated the situation. She'd hoped to be gone by the time they got here.

Damn. It seemed like she was stuck with taking his offer, despite the fact that there was more room for error the longer she stayed with him. At least it seemed like he still thought she was in fact a he, and that was to her advantage. It would be one hell of a shock once he figured out otherwise.

"Fine, but I get whatever I want," she hissed in return, before grabbing his arm and offering a winning and charming smile to the crowd.

"I've forced him to repent. All of you, consider this a lesson learned!"

With a wink at a couple choice women, Momo pushed through the people who had gathered and with the monk in tow, she made a beeline for the pub.

As the young boy pulled Xue away from the crowd, a number of conflicting thoughts occurred to him all at once. On the one hand, he was relieved to have left all that unfriendly attention behind, and he was especially glad to have avoided a meeting with the city watch. There was a headache he could happily go on without but, as if in karmic exchange, he was going to have to treat a total stranger to 'whatever he wanted'. Now that he'd had some time to think things through, Xue was no longer certain spending more time with this kid was the better of the two options.

Back home, his initial apology would have been accepted, and the two of them would have gone their separate ways already. He certainly wouldn't have been called a thief, or had his pleas to the contrary twisted against him. Back home, he could have expected a polite stranger to decline his offer to pay or, at the very least, avoid spending all of Xue's money.

But Xue wasn't back home anymore, and expecting things to be the same here wouldn't solve anything. He'd seen the look in the boy's eyes when he pulled the old man's coin purse from his sash. Xue knew that look, and he didn't like it one bit.

He disliked it enough to make him contemplate the possiblity of ditching the boy right there. It wouldn't be hard. The boy's grip wasn't very firm. All he had to do was release himself and head off in another direction as quickly as possible. Xue doubted the kid would follow, and even if he did, Xue was confident that he could out run the smaller boy.

Contemplate was all he did though. The thought of trying to run away formed knots of disgust in his stomach. He had made the offer, however poorly thought out, so he had to honor it.

They turned a corner that opened up to a side street where several pubs were located. It was then that Xue realized just how badly he may have miscalculated. There were some expensive places on this street, and he couldn't afford all that much to begin with. Putting on as pleasant a face as he could, Xue pointed out the entrance to a nearby tavern that looked reasonable and tried not to sound apprehensive.

"Hey, this place looks good. Why don't we try here?"

a different dimension, a different life
Toshiro walked into the city of Eamor which baffled her. She could have sworn she had left the Capital city heading south. She sighed and looked up at the sky to see about how much more light from the sun there would be to travel by. "Not even worth trying to set out again. Probably should just stay here the night." She walked further into the city looking at the different buildings trying to judge which tavern and inn would be the safest to stay the night. Not really paying attention to the people around her she accidentally tripped a monk knocking him over.

"Sorry! Sorry! I'm so sorry!" Toshiro said. "Let me help you up." She offered her hand.

Before the boy could reply to Xue's question, the monk suddenly found himself falling off balance. Unable to recover in time, he twisted to one side and braced himself, using his lower arm to break the fall somewhat. The impact with the ground still stung, but nothing was seriously damaged ... except perhaps, his pride.

"Sorry! Sorry! I'm so sorry!" Toshiro said. "Let me help you up." She offered her hand.

Xue took the girl's hand and stood up again, his embarrassment from the fall conflicting with an odd sense of amusement at this latest turn of events. Having been in the young girl's position himself quite recently, he thought he knew how she must be feeling at the moment, so he couldn't bring himself to be upset with her.

"It's alright, Miss. It could have happened to anyone," Xue replied, dusting himself off. It was an effort not to look at his 'companion' when he added, "In fact, the very same thing just happened to me earlier today."

He hoped the contrast between their two reactions was not lost on the boy.

"I'm sorry" Toshiro said again once he was up off the ground. She felt completely stupid for walking into someone. She really had become quite clumsy since coming to Avalon. If her master could have seen what had just occurred she would be in some of the worst training of her life.

She caught the slightest movement of the man's head that he was making an effort not to do and took it to be a gustier toward the young boy next to him.

"Do you know what the reputation of this establishment is?" She asked gesturing toward the inn/tavern the event of tripping had just occurred infront of.

"I do not," Xue replied somewhat sheepishly. He'd never been to this particular tavern before. He'd simply chosen it because it looked less fancy, and therefore less expensive, than some of the others down the street. He didn't want to say that in front of the boy though.

"However, there are many inns and taverns here, so I imagine if this one does not meet your expectations, you could easily find another."

That's when the idea struck him. If he invited this girl along, perhaps the boy would show some restraint and Xue's cash reserves might survive the night.

"By the way, my name is Xue Jian, and I was just inviting my new friend here to go in for a meal. Would you like to join us?"

"This one should be fine. I'm not looking for anything to fancy." Toshiro replied. She really only needed somewhere on the cheap side of things since she didn't want to spend all her money in one place.

"It's a pleasure to make your aquentiance. My name is Toshiro Kumiko." She replied with a slight bow of her head. "I'd love to join you two." She smiled.

Momiji was quiet, though her hackles rose at the sight of someone else. "Fuck, no, this was supposed to be my free meal!" Why was this person butting in on something she'd won herself by the sweat of her brow and her wit? Trying to fight a peevish attitude, she decided it would be better for her entire interest if she sat back and just let things happen; not usually her style, but she wanted that free meal badly.

"Fine by me," she said, evenly. Momo didn't want to make it personal, and her face betrayed no dislike. She didn't hate the other woman personally. Just thought that she was a tad inconvenient for her plans. "I don't really care either way, considering we had a deal and you're paying for my meal." At that, she had to smile sweetly and reveal most of the devil in her.

"As for me, you can call me Jak. Everyone else does, after all," her facade as a boy seemed to be working out just fine, didn't it? There was no need to break that assumption and shock the poor monk. If he even was a monk. Momo wasn't quite sure what the two people who were her companions did.

"Shall we go in?"

"I'd love to join you two," said the girl, who then smiled.

Ah, it was such a beautiful smile. Xue Jian certainly found it so, not only because it was aesthetically pleasing to behold, but because it meant he wouldn't have to endure a meal with his freeloading 'friend' all by himself. The monk's pleasure at this was short lived; however, as the boy pointedly reminded Xue about said freeloading, thus promptly pouring what pleasure he'd managed to purloin down the proverbial drain pipes. ((Yay for alliteration! XD))

He took solace in the fact that 'Jak', as he'd named himself, apparently wasn't going to push the issue on Xue's choice of taverns, so when Jak suggested they go in, Xue was quick to agree.

"Yes, let's go in."

Inside the tavern, business was slow, with only a few regulars inhabiting the high bar. Xue was not surprised, for this was fairly typical in the early evening hours. Things would certainly pick up as time wore on. They were seated immediately, which was a definite plus for this particular night. The quicker this meal ended, the better.

Their waitress, a plump woman with long, golden curls and an impressive bust, appeared by their table ready to take their orders.

"Whut kinn'ah git for yuh folks this fine evenin'?" She asked, her voice thick with an accent Xue couldn't place. "Ah kin give yuh some recommendations, but if yuh pull anuh'thin' funneh, Ol' Brom o'er thar'll have yuhr arse out the door right quick." She tipped her in the direction of a Very Large Man standing at the far end of the bar. He shot them a toothy grin. "But yuh'all look like decent folks, so yuh gots nuthin' ta worry 'bout. Now go on then. Tell ol' Sally whut yuh'd like."

Xue looked at Toshiro and gestured for her to go ahead. "Ladies first."

Toshiro smiled when they three entered the tavern. Thankfully the tavern was not crowded yet, meaning it would be somewhat quiet for a while before more people would file in for the night.

When they had been seated a woman came over to take there order and Xue motioned for her to order first.

"I would like stew, whatever kind you have is fine. And if you have jasmine tea, could I have that to drink, please?" Toshiro asked. "If you don't have jasmine tea, whatever kinda of tea you have is fine."
