He licked the blood clean from his hands as he took a casual stride along some well worn path. The feathers that littered the ground were the only thing left of the eagle that had landed in an unsafe spot. Daemion had not eaten in awhile, and canine that he was he took the first available opportunity to gain a meal. But the bird had only absolved his hungry minutely. However that was the life of a stray, even though Daemion looked so human he was anything but. He was Cerberus, the triple-headed dog guardian of the gates of hell. Ok, not the Cerberus, if such a thing truly exists, but he was created in the likeness of that mythological creature. All in all Daemion acted just like a dog.

Walking through this place, it annoyed him. There was nothing here, nothing but screeches of eagles and barren cliff walls. Daemion had decided that as soon as he came near a town, he was going to walk into the place as if he owned it. Damn the humans and their meager blades, they wouldn't be able to do anything about him and would only be able to just wait until he grew bored of the place. Of course this would only be after he killed, and depending on his form, ate some villagers. Yes .. the thought of a good meal did so cause his ears to twitch in anticipation.

Astrid didn't usually like Canyons. She was a crow woman, to be honest, and her favored feathered friends did not get along with eagles. So what if the latter was larger and faster? She would rather have a bird with at least some form of intelligence, and there was the fact that crows were naturalborn tricksters that just enthralled her. They wanted to cause trouble just as much as she did. "Damn place. It's too hot here anyway. Maybe I'll head to the island of Blizzard Cove next - it'd be a nice thing, to balance off this Hell," she thought to herself as she climbed along a path that was obviously well used. "Coming here had been a bad idea. Obviously there are no magical artifacts. Just a bunch of damn birds."

Oh yes, she was not in the best of moods. The heat disagreed with her dark clothing, her fair skin, and her attitude in general. It was hot because it was sunny. It was sunny because it was a nice day. It was a nice day because Hell was not synonymous with this entire gods rotted land yet. Which meant that she'd failed, and while the voices of her daemons were silenced for the moment, there was always that whisper.

And to make matters worse, something crunched underfoot. "If I've stepped on something nasty, I swear to whatever gods are still alive, I'll murder every living thing in this damn place," she thought foully, before daintily pulling away her dark skirts and surveyed what she thought might be a rather unfortunate beetle. "A bone. Eagle. Feathers. What the hell preys on a bird that can fly higher than anything else?"

Astrid blinked. Up ahead, there was something. A form, something she could not identify. That was a rarity indeed. There was not a lot that she couldn't identify.

"Oi. You there. Identify yourself, and give me five good reasons why I shouldn't turn you to dust and marrow," she shouted ahead, though she knew it was folly. She was tired. She was sweaty. Astrid wasn't even sure she wanted to smite anything in this mood. Just get out of this stupid heat and find her way back to her chambers in the guild, where she could have a cold bath and a nice clean bed to sleep in at night.

The eagles had learned by now to stay fr above the man. The man that smelled of dog and the blood of their kin to boot. Daemion only hoped they wouldn't try to crap on his head. Then he might have to go through the tedious process of shape shifting, his height would shoot up so rapidly that the damned birds wouldn't stand a chance, ha! Alas, a few more bites of eagle simply were not worth the trouble. The cerberus had been known to consume a man and his horse whole and not even be sated.

An ear twitched as the scent of something more than birds and blood wafted throughout the canyon. Reaching a hand up to scratch one elfish ear the dog in man's clothes pondered this realization or a few moments. It was ... a woman. Human, well seemed like, and a hint of death. Any other man might have aid 'interesting' or something to that effect. Any such thoughts were tossed out the window however (if he even was he type to have them) as the voice echoed down the canyon. The cerberus simply rose a brow a the woman's 'threat'. Of course there was only one reply a hungry, stray dog could give to that. "Give me one reason why I shouldn't eat you."

Astrid didn't like men, but she sure as hell was bad at staying away from them. Even the ones she did like (read: Bly) she had a hard time staying away from. He was a little better off than the poor sod in front of her though - there were delicious things she wanted to do to, and with, Bly. She just wanted to murder the thing in front of her. Yeah, it was that kind of mood. What could a girl do? She wanted a bath, and wanted one fast. God help the man who stood in her way, and godspeed to him.

The thing in front of her looked more like a thing and less like a man, and ye gods, he stank. To high heaven, she would have thought, but she didn't believe in that sort of thing anymore. Smelly, but underneath that was the stench of blood. "He's the one who killed the godsrotted birds. I guess I should give him a metal, but he's nasty. I might just kill him instead," she realized in a flash, before rolling her eyes. Engaging in banter with this creature would be stupid. She was obviously far more intelligent. It would be a waste of her time, and a waste of his blood to allow him to live, but killing him right off the bat seemed a disservice. She wanted him to know his killer.

"You could never eat me, you foul dog," she hissed in return, dropping her stony composure. It was too hot and far too tiring to always have no emotions, and she had a feeling that her real emotions would scare him. "I am no eagle to be prayed upon, I am a Mistress of Darkness, and I will be respected. I could crush you with the power I hold in my pinky finger, but you seem to be more than meets the eye. A smelly coward like you could never beat me ... at anything."

It might have been all talk - or she might have been serious. He would have to call her bluff to find out that perhaps it wasn't a bluff at all. Astrid's dual colored eyes narrowed. What would he do? She had almost insulted him and his 'manhood'. Most men would take that as a threat already and not hesitate to attack her. Something about the man before her, though, whispered that he was no ordinary man.
And you alone shall know terror.

He didn't think he smelled that bad. Even if he ... didn't bathe often. What did you expect? He's a dog! A dog with the capability of changing his physical form, but still, in essence, he was himself. Himself was something he would never change, a stray, a dog with no more master to leash him. Yes, that was he. But the eagles had not been the tastiest of prey true. Not that he was any sort of connoisseur. Food was food and you ate what you had to in order to survive. Still, he would have preferred a tastier meal. All those damn birds did was peak his hunger. He wanted ... more. And there was not another bird in sight. Then there was that woman talking at him. She was distracting him from finding any more prey! Hm. What a conundrum.

Or was it? He stared the other canyon inhabitant down. Well tried. It was the predator's way, the not submissive predator's way that is. Keep your eyes on all challenges and prey, keep them locked in your sights. Yes. At the woman's reply, he sniffed in response. A haughty canine at that. "Don't look any more filling than those mangy birds." What a scrawny woman she was. Still, he was hungry. Regardless of her words, she didn't look like much threat. "But I'm still hungry." Eh, he wouldn't even need a sword to finish her off. His stomach nearly growled at the thought of a meal. "I'll take you." Well, at least he didn't call her an 'it', as he closed the distance between them.

The brute was actually staring at her, and if not for the apparent fact that he was a complete dog, she would have shifted under his gaze, not liking the piercing quality of it. But he wasn't even human, and she wasn't one to back down either. "Tough luck, pup. You bit off more than you can chew with this one," she thought to herself, glaring right back at him. It almost seemed trivial, this little spat with him, when she could just magick him and send him on his way. Her confidence had been taking hits lately, and all she really wanted was to win this battle and move on with her life. There was always the possibility that it would do wonders for her self-esteem.

If she'd been a nicer, saner woman she would have felt sorry for him when he attempted to get closer to her, but instead she just curled her lip in a snarling smile that was more like a grimace in the end. With a sigh she shook her head and started to chant, the magic feeling like home to her. Everything seemed to go ... gray - as though something was sucking away the surroundings, and Astrid could feel that her spell* was weakened by the fact that this was not an evil area. No matter, she didn't want to kill him and then have to clean up the mess.

He was almost near enough to touch her, and she held up her hands as something gathered, something oozing black lightning and dimming whatever light dared to roam nearby. "Someone needs to teach you manners," she snapped, before letting the ball of magic out of her control and aiming it right towards Cerberus. "You should realize when you're speaking to someone better than you and submit, stupid mutt."

Though a dog he may be, he wasn't stupid. Arrogant, prideful, yes, but he was far more intelligent than many other beings out there. They just thought they were better than him because they ... well they weren't dogs. And ... okay, so, Daemion really was an animal. Regardless of his form taken, that would never change. Hungry animals weren't something to be trifled with too, and this woman dared to do so! He'd make her pay .. oh yes. And then ... he'd make her dinner.

With a snarl like the dog he was, he continued his charge, a hand raising to reveal nails sharp and thickened to claws. Even his ears would flicked back against his skull, even if they themselves were more elf kind than canine, as he brought a hand swiftly downward. Daemion had absolutely no fear of the mangy woman, and he had full confidence that he would put an end to her quickly.

However ... it seemed he would be forced to work a bit harder for his lunch. He had not expected such magical prowess to assault him full force in the chest. The crackle and pop of dark magics knocked him off his feet and he hit the ground rolling. But not for long. The cerberus quickly recovered, making use of his claws to latch onto the earth and flip himself back up to his feet. His flesh sizzled where the spell had hit him in the chest, but he was phased little by the wound, reenacting the same assault as before. Only this time, he'd be ready for her.

The transformation had almost thrown a wrench in her plans, but it wasn't enough to get past her magic, and Astrid was very pleased with the effect that her spell had had on the mutt. It was enough to bring him to his feet, though he was agile and obviously strong. Still he would be no match for her, though it would be more of a fair fight than she had thought. "Just as well. They might think I'm going soft if people see me beating up on a dog like him," she thought. Yes, public image was very important in her business. It was all in the looks.

He just came back and running towards her, she had to admire his determination. Now he resembled more canine than human, and her eyes narrowed as he closed the space between them, before flicking her hand* as though bored, the gesture sending another sparkling black ball towards him. "Really, pup, I can do this all day. You're wasting your time. You won't eat me, not even a nibble," she taunted.

Any other dog would have gotten the picture, but she had a feeling that his continued zeal towards attacking her had nothing to do with stupidity; he just didn't want to lose. Least of all to her - because that meant she was better than him. And perhaps he would have to be subservient to her. The poor mutt had been roaming free and now she had a chance to master him and capture him for her own plans.

Interesting. She rather liked that idea, now that it popped into her head.

There was still the matter of him leaping towards her, and with a muttered spell**, Astrid seemed to disappear, and then reappear a foot or two to the left. Unless he could change direction in midair (which she actually thought he might be able to), his strike would be off mark - or so she hoped. Her face was actually managing to look nice, despite her surroundings, and she would hate to have to kill him when he scratched her up.

Like a dog, once he had in mind that he as going to eat something, he wouldn't' change his mind. His speed increased further as he rushed towards her. The witch, he'd get her. Daemion wondered if her flesh woudl be as tough as her attitude. Bringing his hands about, he caught the next onslaught of magic, not being knocked off his feet this time. Though the spell burnt the sleeves of her shirt away and blistered flesh, he didn't care. Hands woudl hook into claws as he aimed to cut her open.

Instead however, the witch disappeared! With a growl, and a show of teeth, the cerberus pivoted swiftly. Dust rolled about his heels as he landed on his feet again. Turning around, he wanted to make sure the woman had not attempted to stab him in the back. A hand would raise again as if to strike, but it was merely a threat and warning gesture. "Just be still." He growled, before bringing talons to swipe across her face.

He was too stubborn, and that was the problem. Astrid had no mind to really harm him, but the more this nonsense went on, the more inclined she was going to be to hurt him. He was being ridiculous, and she'd never been a fan of those who didn't use common logic. "You won't be able to catch me, dear. You're going to have to try harder than that," she taunted, her lips curling into a rare smile. "Or why don't you just give up. It'd be a shame to kill you and waste all that potential that I see in you." Hurtling backwards, she growled her annoyance as a cut opened on her cheek.

"My face! My beautiful face?" For a moment, she pouted and it looked almost as though she was going to cry. The cut itself didn't hurt; she was past the point of feeling what could be described as a mortal amount of pain. "How rude. Too bad, pup, I was just thinking that you would make a good companion and friend of mine. However, my other thought was that if you ruined my beautiful face in any way, I'd just have to kill you."

This fight was boring her, and she wanted to get back home so that she could heal herself; it wouldn't do for there to be a scar. She was far too vain for that to ruin her face. "Besides, this pup has heart. If I kill him now, I could be killing something that would be infinitely beautiful later." What a waste, this entire situation. A waste of magic, a waste of her and his time.

"How about I strike a deal with you, mutt? You come with me, and I'll spare your life. You can be my dog, my special dog, and I will treat you right and protect you. I might even let you leave in a couple years if you serve me well. Besides, it doesn't look like you have anything else to do, other than try to eat me. "

In fact, he was so stupid stubborn, that he would not simply stop and accept this woman's proposal. The hound was far too ego pumped for that. Bow down to some woman? ha! He would rather bleed some more. As the woman pouted and nursed the slash at her cheek, Daemion rose a hand. Licking the blood from his claws he didn't change his expression.

"No." Though if one believed in such things being seen the hunger in his eyes only grew. She was tasty, for a human, or at least that's what he thought she was. And so he charged again, this time however his speed seemed to have increased. Was he finally getting serious, perhaps? As he lunged, his only thought was of how hungry he was. The only way the guild mistress could stop him would be to tame him like the dog he was.

Stupidity and being just plain stubborn often went hand in hand. Astrid could recognize both in him, but below that, there was potential. Not a large amount, but enough to pique her interest. Enough to make him worth scavenging, even if she did have to beat his skull in to get him to realize that he was in a losing position against her. "I suppose if I subtract the healers fee for both my face and whatever injuries I might cause him, plus the amount of grief he's caused me, plus his remarks earlier .. he'd end up indentured to me for a good three or four years. Enough to make him realize that by 'servant', I really mean slave," she mused to herself. It would be a worthwhile investment, for both of them.

"No is relative. You say no now, but .. in ten minutes? I have a feeling that might change," she replied smoothly, taking a step to the left at his lunge, and *teleporting out of his way. He'd landed one hit on her, which was more than most men could boast about. She wouldn't allow him another. "I won't give you any more chances. You should be glad to know, however, that I'll leave your face untouched - that way, you'll have a mouth to say 'yes' with." Methodically, she had already lined up the spells she had in mind for him. Astrid didn't like to fight (she didn't like to get her hands dirty), but when she did, she always had a game plan.

With a wave of her hand, a dark shape **gathered in front of Astrid, slowly forming bones and a skeletal face. One of her minions, no doubt, holding a very nasty looking cutlass. In truth, that was partly a distraction. The summoned monster would muck things up for her opponent, while giving her the time to dance around any direct attacks. "I hope you don't mind, I called a friend to join the party."

Despite his form the hound was not ... quite so bright. He was just to animal to comprehend words like investment and indentured and ... well a lot of things. What he did understand was fighting and ding and bleeding and scavenging and hunting and, well point made.

Even though she transported herself out of his grasp yet again, the battle awakened something else in him. Respect perhaps? No, there was something far darker than that. In all the mind of a dog he had decided that maybe he'd allow her a little fun before he killed her and made her supper. His supper that is. Licking his teeth, he drew himself up to attack again when something halted his path.

Any previous thoughts flitted away at the summoned beast. An undead, how ... well not very tasty to eat. The cerberus snorted beneath his breath, drawing the heavy broadsword from his back. Soon however he grinned. How nice, she provided him an appetizer. "Fine." Giving up a growl, he brought his blade around to shatter the summoned corpse.

Even in the second that the dog stopped to contemplate her summons, she'd gotten the time and therefore the leverage that she needed. "Now ... what would a dog be afraid of?" His mind was her oyster, and she was happy to wreak havoc with it. She knew a couple spells in her arsenal that would do just great when paired together. "Poor baby. You won't know what hit you until you come to later, with a big collar around your neck." She said, more to herself than to anyone else. It was doubtful that the beast was even listening to her at this point.

Her summoned skeleton broke to pieces; but that was nothing to stress about. "Oh, you ruined my toy! How sad!" She exclaimed, before releasing her hold on that spell. Waving a hand over her face, she activated another one of her tricks**. Two spells, simultaneously. When paired together, there was an almost crippling effect, though it did drain Astrid enough to leave a dent in her reaction time.

For Daemion, it would seem that the world would suddenly go dark, and fear would strike his heart - an unreasonable anxiety that has no cause. It would be a waking nightmare.

Astrid could hardly wait. She'd been dying to find someone to test her latest spells out on, and now she seemed perfect. Just stubborn enough to fight it, but also someone she wanted to frighten. As long as he feared her, he would not be able to break free of her.

As the skeletal being crumbled to the dirt, the cerberus was ... disappointed. It even showed in his expression as the thing vanished to dust and his blade was left hovering in mid air. Giving a belligerent scoff, Daemion turned back to the witch. Why wasn't she fighting him? The cerberus really preferred having a meal fight and bleed before being consumed. "Sad... disappointing..." He growled softy, actually annoyed in the ease of its dispatching.

Oh well, such was the way, him being so strong and all it was really no surprised. Turning back towards the woman, he brought his blade around with him. Now that it was drawn ... he might as well use the extension of a fang. Stepping forward to slice the woman in two, he was surprised to find that she'd disappeared! As did the rest of the world. His blade slammed home against the earth, lodging there.

For a moment he was anxious, but then his hearing and sense of smell made up for it. His movements would slow in order to make sure he met no more deceit. As he carefully rose his blade again, listening for the sound of the woman's breath, the anxiety returned. Shot nerves turned to fear and fear turned to terror. It was all he could do in order to avoid becoming the dog once again. Dropping his blade, he was paralyzed, unable to do much more than snarl in response to the danger threatening to overtake him.
