Bayli stood at a booth that sold cloth, fingering a fine cloth only fit for somebody rich. It was a dark color something she wouldn't usually wear, but she needed something different. She was tired of being treated like the gypsy she was. She wanted to be somebody else. Out of the corner of her eye she could see the owner of the booth watch her making sure she didn't take anything that wasn't hers. She moved on to the next cloth, this one was also dark but the cloth was for her type. Poor and Cheap. She couldn't stand to look at it, she went back to the first cloth. All she could feel was envy. She wanted to grab it and run. The mental battle went on in her head: Take it and be her gypsy self vs. trying to change her ways and see if she is treated any better. Tremble Avalon...for Sir Annoying is here...
|
Elias tiptoed around the corner, peeking between the hanging rugs, textiles, and the cloth vendor's wares as he surveyed the gypsy girl. He smiled, his thin lips contorting into a smirk that was only more twisted than his goatee. He chuckled smugly to himself, looking not unlike a housecat that's finally caught a pesky mouse. He'd been following Bayli around half the town now, entertaining himself with seeing how far he'd get until she'd notice him. She'd been trying to distance herself from him lately, one would first guess perhaps because she'd finally grown tired of his company- most people who ever got to know him half as well as she had couldn't stand the sight of him, but for some strange reason, they seemed to have made an agreeable pair. More likely, he thought, she was trying to make something more of herself, find herself a new life that didn't rely on theft and deception to make ends meet, and therefore one certainly without him. He grinned wider still upon watching her eye a rich fabric longingly, knowingly noticing the telltale expression on her face that told him the gears were spinning in her mind, already working to plot a way to steal what she couldn't otherwise afford. It'd be harder than she thought to distance herself from her past, harder still to ignore what she'd been raised to do, the skills and instincts that had become as much a part of her as her own flesh and blood. He watched her turn to a coarse cloth more suited to her stature before returning to examine the first, her fingers tracing the gold embroidery and smoothing across the brightly colored silk. He felt the smallest tug of pity, for he felt sorry for her- There was no fairness in how life's prizes and privileges were doled out, it was all a matter of what family you happened to be born into- Which is why he'd never seen anything wrong in adjusting the odds for himself. More than that, he missed her he admitted, and it wasn't just because she was a lovely, young, attractively persuasive and sharp, dark-haired little beauty...That was simply a bonus of having her around. But he'd grown fond of her company, and even more so of her extra pickpocketing hands. As unlikely as it was, he found he could trust her, and that was something he'd never indulged in with anyone besides himself before. She belonged with him, belonged with their kind- the thieves, rogues, hustlers, and swindlers- And he would remind her of that. Whistling merrily as he strode out from his hiding place, Elias strutted proudly to stand beside Bayli, eyeing the vendor's wares far more conspicuously than she was. He stroked his beard thoughtfully, pulling a shiny, silver coin from his pocket to dance it noticeably between his fingers. He smiled brightly at the vendor, hardly bothering to make eye contact with the gypsy before he spoke to her. "There you are, girl," he barked roughly, his voice biting with an edge of contempt. "I've been looking all over for you...and here I find you, just as I suspected, sneaking about like a cellar rat instead of doing what I asked and finding a new ensemble for the master, fit for the King's court himself." Elias threw a scathing glare towards the girl the vendor would be sure to catch before flashing her a quick, mischievous wink and following her gaze to the fine silk she'd been fondling. He knew she'd know him well enough to play along, and if they both played their cards right, with a bit of luck, she would have that cloth without paying a single, measly penny. "You're lucky I found her when I did, sir, else you might be short one lovely silk," he continued, fingering the fine fabric himself as he addressed the wary-eyed man behind the booth. "Thieving gypsy swine can't be trusted...though she does serve her master in other ways," he added, using the excuse to show her one of his characteristic lecherous sneers. He returned his attentions to the luxuriant material, bringing it closer as he stroked it in a display of immense interest. "Lovely shade of purple this is," he mused, patting his velvet-clad breast absently. Conveniently enough, he'd chosen to wear one of the more elegant of his many commandeered garments on a day when looking the part of a well-to-do servant would suit his devices finely. "And such intricate threadwork...fit even to have tailored into finery as could be worn to grace the King..tell me, good sir, how much would you charge for this fabric?" "Twenty pieces of silver a yard, and no less," the man in the booth piped up, scowling even more mistrustfully at Bayli now. Elias sighed in disappointment, pursing his lips and examining the cloth more intently as if looking for flaws. "Hmm...that's a bit steep for something so thin, don't you think?" Elias asked, fixing the vendor with a reproachful look. "Don't you try to haggle with me, mister, I know full well what my wares are worth. Twenty pieces and that's my only offer!" he shot back, his expression just as shrewd and unyielding as Elias'. Elias twitched undetectably, put off but not desisted from his scheme. "All right, sir, I meant no harm," Elias said at last, smoothing back his greasy hair and straightening his shirtfront. "Six yards should be quite enough for a noble's robes, yes?" He took another pondering look at the fabric, stretching it between his hands as if estimating measurements in his head. "We'll take it." The vendor nodded, and set about to cut the appropriate length while Elias dug around in his coin purse. He paused, looking dismayed, jingling a few pieces of silver in his palm before stuffing them back in again. "I'm terribly sorry, sir," Elias said, returning the man's livid look with an apologetic one of his own. "I seem to be short a few pieces, but I'll bring them straightaway from my master if you'll hold that for me- he's just past the market, in our ship at the docks...come girl, I won't have you making trouble for this man." He went to tug Bayli away, but the vendor stopped him, peering closely at Elias. "Not so fast, mister," he countered, looking the two up and down, his nose twitching as if he could smell the very mischief afoot. "I've seen enough charlatans in my time not to let you just walk off without paying a thing! You leave her here, and you'll get her and your cloth when you can pay me what you owe." "My good sir," Elias began, looking deeply offended. "Surely you would not question the integrity of one of Lord Dugan's men? Do I look like the shabby street rat that would steal from you? And as for the girl, you'd thank me to take her off your hands if you'd seen some of the messes she's gotten us into- Stashed a dagger in her bodice somehow when we went to the armory, nearly killed the poor fellow and myself included the second we let our eyes off her. Trust me, she's a handful when not overseen by those that lash her for her misdeeds. "I know perfectly what you're onto though, and I can see you're a sharp man; I'll tell you what- why don't you let me take the girl, and I'll take half of the cloth- That way, you'll be guaranteed your life and half your stock in the event I don't return? Besides, if I show my master some of this exquisite work, he'd likely be inclined to throw in a token of his patronage," Elias added with a wink, leaning closer to the vendor with a knowing smile. "What's more, my Lord Dugan will be attending a royal audience in this cloth- Who knows, you may very well be expecting a summons from the high King himself if it catches his fancy." After a few indecisive moments, the ruffled salesman decided Elias' offer was fair enough, so he snipped the cloth down to three yards and handed it to him, dismissing them at last with a wave of his hand and an indistinct grumble. Elias grabbed the girl roughly by the shoulder, leading her out with the cloth tucked victoriously under his arm. "We'll only be a few minutes, sir!" he called back assuredly, making sure his steps were slow and confident enough as they made their escape. It took all his efforts not to burst out into gleeful laughter, giddy with what was about to be yet another successful con. Even the most shrewd and inflexible fools could be swayed, if you knew how to work them. He patted the satchel at his belt, knowing he'd had no more than ten pieces of silver, and it hadn't grown any lighter still. He'd planned all along to walk away with Bayli and three yards of the fabric in the least, and with just a bit of deception and a careful choice of words, he'd done just that. "Well my dear, you got what you wanted- I hope it's enough for a skirt, or curtains, or whatever other nonsense you ladies use this stuff for," he said teasingly to the girl when they were out of earshot. He waited until they'd turned the corner into the nearest alleyway and were out of sight of the vendor to quicken his pace. "Now I suggest we start to run...fast." |

As she fingered the cloth she heard an almost to fimilair voice. Elias. Shhen she realized what he was doing, if she let didn't do her part they both would get in trouble. She played her part, muttering apologize whenever they were cued for in her part. ----- They were slowly walking away, Elias giggling gleefuly by her side. Bayli on the other hand was torn between laughing and feeling sorry for the poor man. knowing that she shouldn't return back to the stand to give back the cloth, she ran with elias once they rounded the corner. She said once they were far enough away to start walking. "Thank you" she said taking the cloth. She felt bad for the man but part of it was his fault for over pricing it. " i could have took it myself if i really wanted to. " she said defending her honor. not wanting to lead on that she was trying to change her life, but he must have noticed that when he was watching her in the market. "I had already been introuble twice today, i didn't want to push it for the day. " She lied folding her arms. |

He glowed with a rare moment of pride at having made someone else happy as she thanked him and he handed over the cloth, equally pleased with the thrill of his scheme as he was with its fruits. He rolled his eyes when she said she could have stolen it by herself, scoffing at her poor excuse. "Of course you could have, you'd just wouldn't have gotten away with it," he said matter of factly, letting go of her at last as he checked to see they hadn't been followed. He veered away from the docks to a tavern he knew of on the far reach of town, eager to get out of the streets and relax until they could be sure to escape from the merchant they'd just robbed scot free. "Admit it," he teased, gracing her with a saccharine grin and a few feminine bats of his eyelashes. "I know you missed me. What I still don't quite understand is what you're doing here, as you rightly have no business as a merchant, a pirate, or any self respecting citizen that belongs here...I suppose you could take up the role of a soliciting hussey for the sailors on shore leave, though." |

She looked at him with a serious face, when he commented about being a sailor hussy. With a serious tone, "that was exactly what i was going to do" She took a drink of whatever was infront of her. She held her straight face till he reacted, but she broke out into a smile. Then said, " I came here because I'm looking for a different profession, or atleast i was until you arrived." She pause, "if i do changed i know you will just drag me back to that dump you call home and starve me till i steal again!" she exclaimed. half-truths. All of it. "He wouldn't notice he is so full of himself!" she thought. "what a pig" "what a time that was!" she laughed heartily, as if she never thought anything bad. "so what are YOU doing here" she asked. |

He raised an eyebrow in response to her scathing retort, shooting back "Well you could have fooled me," as they entered the smoky dimness of the tavern. He ordered them drinks and they quickly grabbed a table. He grunted in reply, unconvinced the gypsy would be able to find an entirely new line of work, even if he did think she was serious about it. He glared at her when she called his place a dump (even though that was very much what it was), more for show than out of actual hurt, for in truth, he didn't mind her jokes- They were what made her so endearingly troublesome. "Following you," he answered truthfully, taking a big swig from his ale. He sighed in satisfaction, tilting back in his chair and propping his boots up on the table to make himself more comfortable. "And no, it wasn't just for the view," he taunted. "I missed making trouble for you, and my pockets were suffering without you as well. So tell me...what honorable occupation do you plan to take up, and still make money to eat from?" He figured there was a chance Bayli did have her future planned out, though he doubted it. He might even be willing to help her out with whatever she decided upon, as long as there was the promise of money involved. |

Bayli raised her eyebrows at him when he answered "following you" but then they lowered as he gave her his explanation. "what honorable occupation do you plan to take up, and still make money to eat from?"" he asked her. This question stumped her, what would she do? She hadn't really planned it out. "I'm going to.... be a-a lady in waiting!" she exclaimed. To whom? She had no idea, but it sounded like a good answer to her. "I'm going to be a lady in waiting for the ladyship!" she said with more confidence. "and you sir won't even be able to gaze upon such a beautiful lady in waiting! So you better get a new partner in take and trade" She was getting way to into this, she might regret it. She didn't even know who the ladyship was. "and if that doesn't work out. I will become a preistess to whatever god or goddess that will take me!" She paused to see how he took everything in. "what do you think about that plan, mister?!?" |
