Shadyn was almost lulled by the serenity of the scene. The ocean was silent save for the rhythmic rush of the waves against the shore. The wind had died down to nary a wisp over the rolling breakers. His eyes remained on the young vampiress, as espiègle as a frolicsome schoolgirl, who yet poked around on the ocean floor. Even one as hardened to the world's dangers as he couldn't help but feel tempted to let his defenses down, if only to enjoy his tranquil surroundings by slipping into a blissful state of insouciance. Fortunately, Shadyn was uncomfortable enough in the water for him to maintain his natural wariness, so when Alyssandra suddenly made for the surface, her mouth opening in a wide "O" of surprised and fear, he quickly saw why.

The vampiress kicked the shark in the eye as she rose, which caused it to falter for an instant, as if shaking off the blow. Alyssandra's strike also sent it falling back towards the ocean floor. During this time, Alyssandra surfaced and began pushing him towards a nearby rock that jutted out of the water like a small island. She said nothing, but the Angelus understood the point she meant to make well enough. He began to swim with a purposeful side stroke, making his way towards safety at a steady gait while still keeping the shark within view. His countenance bore an appearance of being only mildly concerned, even as the shark recovered and began to thrash more quickly in their direction, determined to make a meal out of at least one of them.

To be honest, Shadyn hardly felt threatened. He'd faced creatures far more fearsome than any shark, as bothersome as those jagged rows of teeth might be. Though he rarely fought in or around the water, there were still a variety of options available to him that would have ended the encounter quickly. However, the Nephillim felt little desire to end this creature's life. After all, it, like all living things, had to eat to support it's livelihood. The gods had seen fit to grant it only one method of accomplishing that goal, so why, then, should Shadyn kill it needlessly when he could simply climb onto the rock and out of range of its jaws? As if to answer that question, Shadyn's lead hand quickly found the side of the rock and a solid grip near its edge. His other arm wrapped automatically around Alyssandra's waist as his anchored arm pulled, yanking them both up onto the rock and out of danger. The shark found nothing but the submerged side of the rock and circled it a few times before meandering off at its own pace, dejected by its failure.

Shadyn watched it go with a mild interest as he moved higher onto the rock, getting into a comfortable seated position. Countless rivulets of sea water traced their way down his form, dripping from his bare chest and off of the hems of his leggings. His auburn hair was damp and tousled, giving it even a wilder appearance than normal. His chest was bare, pale and unmarred in complexion as well as lined with clear signs of the muscular physique that lay beneath. His eyes were almond-shaped and as calm as ever, peering out over the ocean thoughtfully at Luna. He appeared entirely unfazed by the incident with the shark.

In truth, he had just been struck with an intriguing thought. What separated a vampire, who had to consume blood to sustain their "unlife" from a shark? What made them any different from any other predator that stalked the land? Aye, there was the rub in the supposedly infallible Angeli logic, and it was enough to give even his mind considerable pause.

After a very long moment of silence, Shadyn finally spoke. He did so without looking at the vampiress who shared his rock. His tallow gaze remained firmly on Luna's frosty visage, giving him a thoughtful and brooding appearance as well as causing his pale skin, coated with a sheen of transparent water, to shine with an ethereal glow in the lunar light.

"...Tell me, what is your life like? How do you live?"
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.

And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Alyssandra had swam with all her might, and when they finally got onto the rock she pulled her knees to her chest. Her long wet hair cascaded over her shoulders, clinging to her frame. She watched the shark carefully until it was out of sight and then layed her head down onto her knees with a sigh. She cast a curious glance at Shadyn when she heard his words, but then returned her eyes to the water beneath them.

"Well... it's... it was lonely, miserably so... but then I met Gabriel and his daughters, so now things are not as lonely, but strangely I still wish I had a friend who understood... Life is complicated, you have to hide what you are if you expect anyone to like you even for a moment because they view you as a monster.... a killing machine... but Im not really, others may be, but I am not.... I try not to feed unless its necessary because I don't enjoy it..." she sighed.

"All life is is a game, a horrible game.... one where you are betrayed, loved by few, hated by many.... one where you are left all alone until someone decides to make it otherwise, and even then.... like with my 'family', they are often mortals with whom you only love a few of them the way they want you to....Thats it really... I miss the sun, its warmth.... I can't even remember what it looks like.... what it feels like.... It is.... constant... a life has meaning, purpose, because it has a end and you have to fulfill your purpose during your lifetime which makes things interesting.... but a vampire is immortal, therefor life loses interest... I love meeting people, seeing new things.... but it is.... dissappointing when you don't know your purpose for continuing to live....."

It is to the credit of human nature, that, except where its selfishness is brought into play, it loves more readily than it hates. Hatred, by a gradual and quiet process, will even be transformed to love, unless the change be impeded by a continually new irritation of the original feeling of hostility.

It was almost awe-inspiring how two creatures with leagues of differences between them could yet find similarities in the ways they viewed the world. In this case you had Shadyn, a being borne of the light itself, was sitting calmly beside a creature of the void, an incarnation of corruption and taint. His golden eyes, still gazing absently out over the moonlit sea, were swirling with inner reflection.

He'd always challenged the Angeli way. Theirs was a way of purity, of justice, of rectitude...from a certain point of view. They had been created solely for the purpose of being a bastion against evil, an insurmountable force of goodness that would guard the land of the gods from the endless tide of evil. Such a force could only be effective if it was itself incorruptible, so the gods, in all of their wisdom, had composed their guardian angels without emotion. Without feeling, passion, or ardor of any kind. Without the capacity to feel anger or hatred, the Angeli truly were the perfect paladins of light. Their ways were wise and utopic, the epitome of goodness, righteousness, and chastity of action.

And yet, they were lifeless. And in that lifelessness lay a terrible apathy towards those different than themselves. They were supremely arrogant in their perfection, and that arrogance was in itself the flaw in the diamond's cut.

Shadyn was viewed as an abomination from his very birth. Grown from Angeli seed but born from a human womb, he was the only half-breed of his kind, a Nephillim. As such, he was gifted, and corrupted, with the same emotions that all human beings bore from the moment their brainwaves began. He was viewed as tainted, a danger to their entire society. But yet, he could not be left to wander among the humans as they would never accept one so different either. Shadyn was caught in limbo between two societies, both of which spurned his presence. And so, he wandered. He wandered not because he enjoyed it or found solace in the loneliness...quite the contrary.

He wandered because he simply had never had a home.

Shadyn's right hand rose to meet his face and then proceeded to run up and through his hair, pulling the matted bangs out of his eyes and slicking them down the back of his head. Tiny beads of water continued to drip from the long locks of hair, running down his shoulders. Shadyn was vividly aware of the way the lines of water traced their indifferent path down his bare torso. The sensation of being to tangibly feel, to be able to feel the air shifting around his bare skin and the rock beneath his bottom...to be able to shiver ever so slightly at the coolness of the water slowly evaporating from his skin...such was a feeling he felt but at the rarest of times. Humans took such sensitivity for granted as they had always felt it and always would, but for a creature normally incapable of such sensation...it was like waking up from a deep sleep, and finally being able to feel the sheets wrapped around you and the mattress beneath your form. It was a heavenly feeling...almost like being born again. And it put Shadyn in a queer sort of mood, a more passionate creature sat beside the vampire than the normal calm and collected Angelus that would otherwise.

Shadyn wasn't yet sure quite what was causing this exceptionally rare occurrence, but he was sure it had something to do with the dark immortal who sat beside him, her chilled arm just barely brushing his own, lighting up the nerve endings with excitement. She spoke with such pain in her tone, the pain of eons of unfulfilled life. He knew what it was to live seemingly without purpose...another way he saw similarity between the two of them.

The Nephillim's head swiveled and he found her eyes meeting his, an almost inexorable collision of two souls. Out here, lit only by the light of Luna, Alyssandra bore almost an ethereal beauty to her. An exotic sensuality hung in the air about her like an intoxicating haze. Her wet skin shone with an iridescent glow, matching her hair with its lunar shimmer. Even the glint of her wicked fangs in the silvery light made his heart throb. He was silent for a long moment even after she finished speaking, his golden eyes resting on hers with an unreadable look to them.

"Life is intrinsically corrupt...even the most perfect of beings are subject to flaws resulting from their own perfection. In realizing that, we must also wonder if life even has a purpose at all...are we constantly fettered by some inevitable destiny...or would we do better to realize we live in the moment, and should reach out for opportunities when they present themselves..."

He was as corrupt as she, the Nephillim as tainted as the vampiress. To give in to temptation was to give in to that darkness...but could anyone blame Shadyn for wanting it? Longing for it? It was his curse, for though he could feel happiness and pleasure and enjoy simply being alive as his brethren could not, he was beset by the slings and arrows of a passionate life and so was subject to the queer temptation that gripped him at that moment...

It was temptation born out of his own innate corruption, and it kept his eyes fixed on Alyssandra's. But was it a temptation worth giving in to?

Alyssandra's eyes meet his when he looked toward her. She could sense he was thinking deeply about something. But what? She smiled as a slight breeze blew. The water splashing against the rock in a constant rhythm. The moon shining down on them with ever constant light. She sighed and looked towards the sky.... stars were shining brightly, seagulls flew overhead.... and then her eyes came to rest once more on Shadyn's figure....

He was just as wet as she, and looked even more majestic than he had before. The way his damp skin glistened held her attention. Was it the fact that Shadyn intigued her because he was a creature of light? Because he was already in the light that she wished she could be accepted into even if just for a day? No... there was something else about him... Something that made her dead heart long to beat again. What could it be? She knew... even if she wouldn't say it, she did know... It was the way he looked sitting here with her in the silver light of the moon, the way he didn't run away or scream out of fear or try and harm her... the way he listened and talked to her without sounding as though she were nothing but a evil creature without feelings... It was the way his eyes looked when he was thinking...

Alyssandra looked towards the water, the way his eyes were watching her she felt as though he could see and read her every thought. Such thoughts were not proper between a being as herself and him.... were they? None of the other vampires would approve but... did she really care? They already didn't approve of her, would it matter what she did now? The longing and desire she felt sitting here were immense. She glanced slowly back towards Shadyn... was he thinking the same thing? What would they do now?

Shadyn was many things, but majestic was not one of them. In fact, much of the time he existed in varying states of abject grunge. The Angeli were a species perfect in both form and mannerism, but his own celestial features were marred by the rugged contours of a distinctly human form. Shadyn was an unnatural blend of both angelic and anthropomorphic features, an appearance that was unsettling in the best of cases and in the worst downright unnerving. In addition, his face was etched with the vicious, carved remnant of a battle long past, an X-shaped slash that had by some miracle avoided removing his right eye. Shadyn was queer-looking in the best of cases, but somehow that seemed to be an attraction to many of the women in his life.

Alyssandra said nothing, and it was a silence that Shadyn very much wished she would break. Words were having trouble rising to his mouth as well, but anything that he could pay attention to other than the way she was looking at him was more than welcome. Her eyes...they were luminous in the soft moonlight, glittering with the brightness of a hundred stars. The way her wet hair curved down over her shoulders, shining in the lunar light, served to accentuate her femininity. The way she looked away shyly only to have her eyes return inevitably to his only made him wish they would stay that way.

Her eyes were shining with the same yearning that he was sure was smoldering in his own...the natural attraction between sexes.

Or was it something more? From a certain point a view, two creatures of such opposite polarity gazing at each other in such a manner was an abomination. Any full-blooded Angeli would have struck down Alyssandra at first sight and left her body to be carried off and devoured by the rising tide. Indeed, a large part of Shadyn found her repulsive. She was a creature who was intrinsically dark in her very nature, no matter what she might claim to the contrary. Shadyn, at least half of him at least, was fundamentally of the light, and beyond that had spent much of his life chasing the shadows into remote corners and protecting others from the graze of corruption against their very being.

But...if she is so black of soul...why then do her eyes shine so?

Almost without his voluntary control, Shadyn's left hand slowly rose and found its way to the vampiress' shoulder. Her chilled body was remarkably soothing to the touch as his palm found its way up her damp, pale skin and touched her cheek with nothing short of a caress. His eyes never left hers, but slowly one could almost tangibly feel the distance between the two pairs of pools closing. It was almost inevitable...the attraction between them was so strong. Was there any way to avoid the kiss?

Of the night she may be...but the human soul can easily just as corrupt. From a certain perspective...she is no different than I...just a creature who is trying to live out their existence as best it can...

They complemented each other. So different...and yet...the same.

Alyssandra let her and rise to meet his when it rested so softly on her cheek. She closed her eyes, taking in his smell and warmth. She sighed, unsure what to say she looked to the moon for guidance.

Oh Mother Moon, she thought, I seek your guidance. What shall I say? What shall I do? Alyssandra kissed the palm of his hand lightly, her eyes opening slowly to gaze upon him. No matter what others thought, he was beautiful in her eyes. She bit her lip gently, and opened her mouth to speak... but no sound came... she shut her mouth slowly and continued to argue over what to say.

Part of her wanted to stay perfectly still so that maybe time would stand stll with her, but another part of her wanted to close the distance between them. She sighed once more and opened her mouth barely so that maybe she could speak. "...your eyes say you are thinking.... may I ask what of?"
