Alyssandra came out when the moon had just arrived in the sky. She loved the way the moonlight reflected off the water, and found the water soothing on her skin. She walked slowly along the shore, water lapping over her feet, and at the hem of her dress.

She looked around, and not seeing anyone removed her shoes, and let the wet sand slip between her toes. She giggled, the water was tickling her feet. She sat down on the sand, close enough to the water that it was constantly moving around her. She sat there, staring at the moon, her eyes reflecting its beauty.

Alyssandra picked up a beautiful white shell and moved it around, admiring it. She began to hum softly a lullaby she had once heard. Memories from her mortal years danced within her mind, drifting to and fro among her other thoughts. She sighed, smiling sadly. In a way, she missed it, but not enough to long for it.

She sat the shell down, watching as the sea washed it away. She laughed softly. Life.... it was intriguing. She heard some movement from the sea, and yet assumed it was the water, or a fish. Yet shortly after she heard more movement coming from somewhere behind her. She sat still, acting as if she had not heard, yet she was prepared. If she were to strangely be acted, her attacker would not like the results.

Being a creature of light didn’t stop Shadyn from appreciating the finer points of the darkness. After all, what was darkness but the absence of light? He enjoyed the patterns made by overlapping shadows, shifting as their owners blew in the midnight breeze. Tonight, that breeze was coming from the ocean, which rushed towards and away from Shadyn as if determined to reach him eventually. Shadyn watched it absently, incoherent thoughts and sweet nothings filling his mind as he gazed up at majestic Luna, who had just risen over the sea. Her silvery radiance cast odd patterns on the rippling waves, making it look like mottled steel against the darkness of the night sky. Her luminescence was also reflected in Shadyn’s golden eyes, which observed all of this with a profound appreciation for the scene that filled his gaze.

Shadyn trailed his fingers along the base of the cliff that he was following, skirting the edge of an area that his map had called the “Coral Cove”. According to the locals, it was a favorite for lovers looking for a place of beauty and solitude to hole up at. Shadyn wasn’t one for romance, typically preferring to keep to himself, but he had decided he had nothing better to do than to go have a look. Ira had flat-out refused to come. It seemed that ospreys, fish-eating hawks as they were, had no taste for saltwater gulpers. In addition, she found it difficult to fly over and near the sea, as the warm thermals that rose over the land gave way to chilled, salty wind gusts over the tumultuous ocean. As a result, she had remained further inland and waited for Shadyn to return from his little detour. The Angelus was in no hurry; he rather enjoyed being alone with his thoughts. He also welcomed the change of setting, as it had been quite some time since he’d last paid the ocean a visit. Though he had his problems with boats, he gave the boundless depths of the sea the respect they deserved.

The cliff he wandered along was perpendicular with the shoreline, so Shadyn was headed directly for the falling tide. It was in a recession, with Luna situated over the horizon in the background. His dusty leather boots sank into the sand, forcing him to move with a slightly awkward gait. He let the swirling depths of his thoughts draw his attention away from the incessant clinking of his two blades in their scabbards. Lunaras, the sapphire-studded hilt that stuck out from his left hip, was pulsating brightly in the moonlight. She was lashed horizontally across the back of Shadyn’s hips, whereas her daytime brother Soltia was in a more conventional position, strapped diagonally over the Nephillim’s back. Its hilt poked up over his right shoulder. Shadyn was dressed fairly plainly, in a leather sleeveless tunic and matching leggings, cinched at the waste by a leather belt with a gold buckle. Around his neck was wrapped a long scarf with ragged ends that fell all the way down to his calves. The many wrappings around his neck coupled with the way his wild auburn hair draped in his eyes gave him a guarded, mysterious appearance. His forearms were wrapped in simple leather gauntlets which left the fingers exposed. A sudden gust of wind rolling in from the sea tousled Shadyn’s hair and revealed the nasty X-shaped scar over his right eye for a moment before falling back into place.

Shadyn was entirely lost in thought as he plodded through the sandy bank, his ragged scarf fluttering along behind him in the wind and licking at his heels. His left hand traced the irregular cliff side all the way to a band, where the cliff turned parallel to the shoreline. Shadyn meandered around it and was about to continue with his thoughtful wanderings when his eyes rested on a peculiar sight. The image was indeed so peculiar that at first he didn’t believe he was really seeing it.

What he thought he saw was a young woman, in the prime of life, sitting with her back to him and gazing out over the ocean. She was still a ways off, but Shadyn’s eyes were beyond those of a human. She was dressed in, of all things, a wedding dress, one which hugged her body well and accentuated the curves of her highly attractive physique. In her sun-kissed blonde locks lay what appeared to be a tiara. Her skin tone was quite fair, fair enough that the moonlight gleamed against her bare shoulders with a pleasant shine and glittered in her golden hair. Her feet were bare, and were partially coated with sand sticking to the wet skin.

Once Shadyn had convinced himself that he was in fact seeing something substantial and not a strange apparition, he set upon wondering what a young girl, dressed up for her own wedding, was doing way out in the middle of nowhere in the dead of night. This was a spot popular with lovers, which would explain her dress, but if she was here on her honeymoon, where was her lover? Shadyn’s senses, jolted awake when Shadyn’s thoughtfulness gave way to surprise at this sight, detected no signs of life for miles around. Except of course for himself and this lovely young lady. They were completely alone. So what was the real reason?

I must be cautious…not everything is as it seems.

Still, Shadyn had no reason to believe that this young woman was anything other than she appeared to be at first glance. He adjusted the wrappings around his neck, pulling them down so, if she turned, she could see his whole face. It would make him appear just a hair less mysterious and imposing. He had no desire to frighten the young woman, as clearly she too had thought she was alone that evening. She continued to maintain the appearance of being unaware of Shadyn’s presence, but his sharp eyes caught the stiffness that gripped her body beneath his gaze. She had heard him, which was unsurprising because he hadn’t been making any attempt to conceal himself. Well, now that she knew he was here there was no point in trying to sneak away unnoticed. Brushing the unruly hair from his eyes to make him look just a bit more presentable, Shadyn took a step forward, away from the cliff and towards her, as he spoke up to “break the ice” as the saying went.

“Don’t worry, I’m as surprised as you. It seems we both incorrectly assumed we were alone. I’m not here to attack lone maidens who are inexplicably out on the beach in the middle of nowhere in their wedding dress.”

His voice was calm and unimposing, but it carried a questioning hint of irony in its inflection.

Alyssandra let her muscles relax, and the tension slip away. She heard the man speak, and stared out at the horizon once more. She chuckled softly.

"I am afraid you happen to be correct, sir, things are not always what they seem." She said, catching his thought. "And sadly, I am alone... but not for the reason I am sure you are thinking."

She stood up, and dusted off her dress. She straightened her tiara, her fingers gently sweeping the white roses. She smiled sweetly, her eyes portraying a strong passion that would have been hard to determine whether it was love, anger or another emotion. She looked down, blushing slightly and curtseyed.

"Forgive my manners... I am Alyssandra... who might I ask, are you?"

She heard a splash and saw a dolphin out in the open water. She giggled happily, it was beautiful. She looked back towards the man, awaiting a response. She began twirling a strand of her hair.

Cute.

There were a countless many people Shadyn had met over the years, many of them in Avalon, but this was one of the extreme few who he could describe with the word "cute". That was really the only way to describe her, the way she brushed herself off and fixed her tiara. The way she curtsied with a flush painting her cheeks red. The way she giggled at the dolphin as amiably as a school girl. It was, actually rather adorable. Shadyn couldn't help but soften his gaze upon such a comely sight. Young she might act, but his eyes could see that her body was mature. Very ripe, as he couldn't help but notice. She intrigued him, to say the least. She intrigued him so much, actually, that he hardly noticed the nagging little itch in the back of his skull, the one that was telling him to look at her beyond the physical to see what she really was.

Instead, he answered her polite curtsy with a slight bow. Her manners certainly weren't lacking; Shadyn actually wasn't used to such respectful treatment. He got it...back in his homeland, of course, but ever since he had come to Avalon he had pretty much been satisfied with being treated like any penniless, wandering riffraff. He regarded her prim and proper temperament with his characteristic half-smile, one corner of his mouth perking up.

"A pleasure, Alyssandra. Many people call me Rurouni, for a number of reasons, but you may call me by a more personal name, Shadyn."

Shadyn ran a hand through his auburn hair as he began to feel a bit more at ease, taking another step closer to Alyssandra. The sand near the coastline was smoother and firmer, making for better footing. He didn't feel quite so awkward with each step anymore.

Luna gleamed out over the ocean, her face a great, silvery, celestial orb. Her rays glistened off the rubbery skin of the dolphin as it leaped into the air, exciting a delighted giggle out of Alyssandra. Shadyn watched it with his little half-smile. A dolphin was a creature he saw quite rarely, as he wasn't all that great of a swimmer to be perfectly honest. Alyssandra then turned back to him, watching him silently as she twirled a golden lock between her fingers. His eyes met hers as he spoke to her yet again, now a bit more at ease with her presence since she seemed to have loosened up.

"If not for the reason I had in mind, then why might a beautiful young woman like yourself be alone in a place like this in the middle of the night?"

Shadyn raised his eyebrow in her direction inquisitively. He was curious about her, but continued to ignore that nagging itch in the back of his mind. Surely this pretty little thing meant him no harm. She was certainly fun to just look at, what with her gleeful attitude. Her highly attractive figure, accentuated by the form-fitting wedding dress, was a great asset to her as well.

Alyssandra smiled, "Well, it is a pleasure to meet you, Shadyn......."

She looked back at him, her eyes had softened, and now glittered with a hint of happiness. The waves danced up onto the shore and teased the hem of her dress with its soft caresses. She stood still as he moved closer to her. She took a breath, and smelled the air. Alyssandra could smell the sea air, and if she searched for it she could smell him as well.

"The night is beautiful, is it not? So what other reason do I need?" She laughed softly gazing up at the moon. "The Goddess grants us all a blessing when we have the pleasure of enjoying places such as this where there is peace.... silence...."

Alyssandra turned around, her back to him and walked closer to the sea. She walked until the water was up to her ankles and stopped, looking back at him over her shoulder.

"What do you think?"

She bent over and picked up a shell the color of pearls. She moved it around with her fingers, the moonlight reflecting off it. She smiled, and her eyes were peaceful, content.... she spoke once more, her voice soft, "Sometimes I think time is like the sand... there for a moment, yet with another wave of events it dissappears...."

Shadyn's grin couldn't help but grow in response to this girl. He was taken slightly aback by her poetic harangue; it seemed she was far more in tune with the beauty of the ocean at night than he. Shadyn found an odd paradox in the fact that he could spend so much time traveling by night--sometimes by foot, sometimes by horseback, and sometimes by air--and not appreciate the glistening magnificence of the stars in the night sky, the cool rush of the ocean over the sandy beach, the soft, cool caress of the moonlight on a young maiden's golden curls. He raised an eyebrow, as he hadn't expected her to be quite so...deep. At the same time though, she impressed him quite a bit. He remained silent, watching her until she asked his opinion. He remained silent yet for a few more moments before he spoke, his voice melodious and serene over the sound of the rushing waves.

"How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank.

Here will we sit, and let the sounds of music

Creep in our ears; soft stillness, and the night

Become the touches of sweet harmony.”

Shadyn finished the poetic line and as chance would have it, managed to glance down at the beach up ahead in time to see a spiral-shaped sea shell set in the sand twitch of its own accord. He crossed to it, in the process coming even closer to Alyssandra, and got to one knee as he picked the shell up between his thumb and forefinger of his right hand. Out of its open base protruded brown claws and a few scrambling insect-like legs that were quickly drawn up into the shell for protection. Shadyn placed the shell in his palm and took a moment to admire the hermit crab, as the creature seemed to decide the coast was clear again and he came partially out of his shell, walking a few paces on Shadyn's hand, wearing the sea shell on his head like some absurdly large hat. Shadyn grinned at it before gently replacing it on the sandy beach, where it continued to walk vaguely in the direction of the ocean. He straightened up again, and responded to what Alyssandra had just finished saying about the sand.

"Life is of the same fleeting nature. Even those who call themselves immortal must weather the grips and pangs of their friends and family's passing, and many of them are themselves more vulnerable than they realize."

Shadyn ran a hand through his hair, in the process pulling his auburn bangs out of his eyes. She could see his eyes clearly now, the right eye slashed with a wicked scar that took the shape of an X. It was an old wound, and he salty air licked at its partially healed surface, making it twinge a bit. Shadyn's face continued to wear that halcyon grin, and his mind continued to ignore any suggestions that this girl could present a threat. He was much closer to her than he had been when he'd first seen her, but he unfortunately continued to miss the girl's elongated incisors when he glanced over her face. Instead, he continued with his thought.

"Enjoy life while you have it, because the next day it might be washed away with the ebb and flow of the universe."

Alyssandra nodded, "Yes...."

She smiled up at the night sky, and caught sight of a falling star. She giggled, closed her eyes and made a wish. When she opened her eyes she kissed the shell she had been holding and tossed it back into the sea.

"Now my wish will be washed away with the sea.... and maybe find its way back to me...."

She smiled at him, and took a deep breath. What a strange encounter... she had been having a few of those of late.... maybe the Goddess had finally decided to bless her with more than just the beauty of the night.... maybe a friend as well? She sighed happily at the thought. Friends were a good thing to have.... if you were sure they could be trusted. She thought back to the betrayal done to her by her father and mother.... by her friends of the past... well, she was still here.... they had been swept away like the sand by the waves and would not yet again return on life's warm shores.

Alyssandra tilted her head in thought. No, she was not quite on the warm shores of life in the same way she had been before, basking in its sunlight... now she stuck to the darkness that hit its shores and showed others the difference between night and day. Smiling softly at the thought of the sun, she looked once more towards the horizon, then glanced up at Shadyn's face. She saw his scar and stared a moment, but turned her head back to the horizon after observing it. It was a odd little trinket of sorts.... she wondered how he had come by it but was not curious enough to inquire aloud.

"Do you believe in wishes? In fairies and vampires and such?" She asked softly, her eyes not portrayin much emotion, instead her facial expression showing her to be once more like the young girl she had been before given the Dark Gift.

Her question surprised him to a certain degree, but then again, since the very point when he had noticed her presence, what about this girl hadn't surprised him? He found it difficult to avoid getting swept up in her dreamy, pacifying existence, simply enjoying the wonders of the midnight's eve. Shadyn found himself too often burdened with the cares and worries of an entire world, a weight that crushed down upon him like the world's mass on the shoulders of the titan, Atlas. It was rare when he had the opportunity to enjoy life's finer points, the beauty of an ocean glowing with mottled moonlight, the gentle rush of its tide upon the shores, the softness of a young maiden's hair or the beauty of her face and form. When that opportunity did present itself, it was soothingly seductive to his normally calm and immovable mind. Thus, it was difficult to keep himself from feeling a bit as carefree as Alyssandra did, and to be honest was it such a bad thing?

Shadyn watched her wishing ritual with a non-appraising face, remaining silent while she did it. He didn't really have a reaction to it at the moment, but when she asked him point blank if he believed in such things he was forced to develop one. As such, he was silent for a long moment, his eyes gazing out to see with a glazed look to them. The cool caress of the wind licked at his hair, pulling its unruly length away from his face. It found his scarf as well, fluttering it about his heels. Finally, he responded, his eyes returning to her. This time, his mouth was set in a straight line. It was not a hard or hostile look, as his eyes would indicate, but one of passive serenity that was beginning to mirror the girl's dreamy existence.

"Fairies and vampires...such are things I have encountered before. I have physically seen them to exist, with my own eyes. I have experienced their powers. As a result, I not only believe in their existence but am self-assured that they are out there."

Shadyn paused for a moment, adjusting the scarves' wrappings around his neck. His own complexion was pale, paler than the average human at least, and thus the moonlight gleamed off of his skin the same as it did hers. His eyes met hers again, observing their pale blue pools with his glistering look. They were astonishingly beautiful, even with such natural splendor all around them.

"As for wishes...mine never seem to come true, so they are more difficult to believe in. It seems to me that if you are wishing for something, that means you aren't taking any real steps in bringing that wish about yourself. You're hoping someone else, some higher power perhaps, will do it for you. Such, in my opinion, is a flawed perspective."

Shadyn hesitated a moment, but then finished the thought.

"...but still a beautiful one, I must admit."

The wind picked up again, fluttering his hair and his clothing and giving Shadyn even more of a dreamy feel. Alyssandra was now only a handful of feet away, and he found her presence to be quite soothing. Just the way she enjoyed the world around her was inspiring...it made him envious that he was so rarely able to appreciate the things she happily giggled over every few moments. Her carefree nature was intoxicating and pervasive. His eyes never left hers this time.

"If I were to wish for anything, I should not wish for wealth and power, but for the passionate sense of potential -- for the eye which, ever young and ardent, sees the possible. Pleasure disappoints; possibility never."

Alyssandra smiled at his response, now truly knowing that he had yet to discover what she was. "I am glad another believes in such existance.... seeing as I am here now, and not a mere apparition but flesh and blood and bone, I too believe.... strongly believe.... but as to the matter of wishes.... I make a wish, as a promise to myself, as a goal of what I want.... then I find ways to make it true, and if a higher force wishes to assist I give thanks, but otherwise I do what I may....."

She thought a moment, then spoke again, "And as to what I wish for... I wish for what I always have.... friendship... someone to trust, someone who won't betray me..... someone who does not cower at my touch for fear of what I am....." She sighed. "It is always a young girl's dream to have love, for they already have someone to lean on... their family, but then when their own family... their own flesh and blood betrays them for greed and earthly pleasures..... then they wish for a friend, someone who won;t treat them in such a way......"

Alyssandra smiled sadly at him, searching his face for a sign of understanding and knowledge. Did he know at all how she felt? Had he ever been betrayed and felt as though his whole world was gone and everything and everyone had turned on him? And.... did he now know what she was, did her smile show her pearl white fangs, and did he now notice them although she had shown them to him openly since his arrival?

She could not be sure, but figured from his response such things would be told, her questions would be answered. She took a deep breath and sat down on the sand, in the water. She touched the surface of the water, watching it ripple til the ripples faded as the next wave came upon her.

Alyssandra's words spoke of a soul bereaved, one without the blessings of others to grace its existence. Shadyn was of that kind, a wanderer who found solace with no one. The only exceptions to that rule had unleashed a power the world did not deserve to see, let alone feel. Shadyn's emotions, borne from the fires of unrequited passion, had resulted in terrible atrocities that rivaled the workings of Kioku, the sadistic Goddess of Vengeance. As a result, he lived off the grid, a wanderer without a destination. He drifted from place to place, meeting others but never staying long enough for any attachment to grow further than an acquaintance. It was a lifestyle that protected both him and those around him from his own greatest enemy: himself.

Though he knew his life was spent in the pursuit of protecting the lives and well beings of others, he still held an inner longing, a selfish desire for his own satisfaction. He had very few who he could call friends, and no one that he could call more than that. As a result, he was a man alone in the world, a lone wolf whose only companion was a bird. Ira was just as lonely as he, and so the two had found an odd kinship that had staved off the maddening solitude. Still, though, Shadyn constantly longed for companionship in a more real sense, someone he could trust, someone who would listen, someone who could stand by his side. Someone he could love. It seemed Alyssandra had a similar longing.

Shadyn listened silently to Alyssandra's lamentations, his face continually calm. His eyes gleamed passively, listening to her cares and worries. They were genuine, the real emotions of a girl gripped by sorrow and loneliness. At least, he thought that was so until his eyes noticed the way her woeful smile gleamed in the moonlight. It was only there for a moment, a fleeting glimpse of the truth, before she turned away and sank into the shimmering surf. She quietly played with the waves, even as all the while Shadyn's mind worked rapidly.

Her words...they spoke of someone who knows firsthand of the kind of pain and loneliness that grips one who is different, one who is alone among her own people. One who is cast out, shunned, for bearing a darkness viewed as too dangerous to associate with. She's more like me than she knows...but why?

The flash of her teeth.

Her fangs.

Shadyn realized the truth all at once, in a sudden explosion of discernment. The itch that had been quivering in the back of his brain was his magical senses, which were informing him that the girl before him was enshrouded with a dark power the likes of which he had seen only once before, in only one particular creature. He almost kicked himself for not realizing it sooner...a young girl dressed so strangely out alone in the middle of the night. It had been so obvious...and yet her intoxicating presence had blinded him to the truth so easily.

"Vampire."

Shadyn's voice was comparable to a dangerous hiss, as his eyes narrowed with a razor-sharp focus at the same time. His left hand was at his side in a flash, grasping the sapphire-studded hilt it found there and pulling chilled Lunaras from her sheath. The blade burst from the blue scabbard with a flash of silvery light and glowed as brightly as Luna herself when it caught the rays of the moon. Shadyn gripped the blade backhanded and swung it protectively in front of his body, between him and Alyssandra. He knew enough about vampires to know that they could not be trusted; their very reason for existing was to prey on other unsuspecting creatures. Many did so though a facade of loneliness and making others feel sorry enough that they came close, and fell victim to their terrible fangs. No matter how attractive Alyssandra might be, how desperate she might seem for a friend, Shadyn would not be giving up his divine ichor to a veritable parasite.

"Give me one reason why I shouldn't strike you down where you sit."

His voice was as terrible as his eyes, which were the feral slits that came about when a creature of the light encountered one of darkness. One foot stepped back in a combat stance, as he watched Alyssandra with all of a warrior's focus, ready if she should make one suspicious move.

((Sorry, that's how Shadyn responds initially to vampires ^_^. Say the right things and he'll warm up to you nicely after a bit, though.))

The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.

And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains: round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

<<no problem, I never take these things personal :) >>

Alyssandra watched his reaction, and looked towards the ground sadly, stepping back quickly. Her eyes overflowed with sadness, and a tear slid down one cheek. Fear was evident. She took a few steps back, tripping over a large rock and landing on the ground with a pitiful sound. She looked up at him and spoke her voice showing yet again betrayal, and sadness....

"I knew you didn't notice at first.... I knew it.... nobody could be that nice to me and know what I was." She was crying, and soaked from a wave that washed over her. She stood up, her wet hair clinging to her face. She watched him for a moment then looked up at the moon, and whispered, "O Mater Luna regina nocis adiuvo mi nunc....."

Alyssandra looked back at him and turned away running, not using her speed but just running--stumbling more like it. She stopped when she got a little ways from him, and turned back to look at him. "What is it you hate of me? What have I done?" She looked at him, desperation showing in her eyes. "What have I done," she asked again in a quieter tone.

It is to the credit of human nature, that, except where its selfishness is brought into play, it loves more readily than it hates. Hatred, by a gradual and quiet process, will even be transformed to love, unless the change be impeded by a continually new irritation of the original feeling of hostility.

Shadyn possessed many talents, but the greatest of them all was of neither arm nor acumen, but in sight. Shadyn's golden eyes often felt as if they could pierce to the very soul, and this wasn't entirely an exaggeration. Shadyn's eyes were capable of reading a person beyond any physical capacity; they were able to see what a person was truly feeling. The sense was so acute, in fact, that often it seemed as if Shadyn's golden gaze could read the very minds of those who stood before him. It was those eyes that looked on the fleeing girl now. She had stumbled away from him, falling once, before breaking into a run. Looking back, Shadyn saw her eyes glistening with hints of tears.

A vampire...crying?

Many predators, particularly vampires, were very clever and capable of acting well enough to lure their prey in. Shadyn had encountered them before. Most wouldn't go to such lengths as actually sobbing, but the possibility was there. However, Shadyn's eyes allowed him to infallibly see through such charades. No acting was good enough to foil his golden gaze. When he saw the tears glisten in her eyes, his heart softened just slightly. Just enough to get him to take a closer look.

This vampire, though dark creature she was, was not acting. Intense loneliness was gripping her body. The tears that glistered in her eyes like tiny stars were true tears, borne from passionate bereavement. Shadyn's eyes rounded out a bit, his blade dropping to his side as he watched her flee. His eyes went from a terrible yellow back to a mottled gold, his body relaxing. His heart throbbed in his chest, because he knew what he had just done.

Vampire she may be, but she was almost a shadowy version of him. Her past was full of loneliness, of isolation from her kin for something she could not control. Most vampires embraced the loneliness, took solace in the darkness, and became bloodthirsty predators on the hunt. However, apparently, at least for this one, this was not the case. No creature on earth was capable of foiling Shadyn; there was no acting skill sufficient to convince him. This girl was not acting, and he had shunned her just the same as all those she despised so much had done over the years.

Shadyn looked down at Lunaras' silvery blade, radiant in the shine of the moonlight. Luna would advise him to let her go; she was still a vampire after all. What if she got hungry? Still...it wasn't Luna that guided him, but his own judgment.

And his judgment recalled another vampire...one who had been formed from the pure body of an angel. Daughter of Orion, the Great Hunter, whose image forever sat in the heavens. She had been corrupted by her passion for...for Shadyn himself, and it had led her to the Dark Gift. And even then, he had shunned her. He had cast her down, and she had been so torn with grief that she had departed from him. He did not follow, and he'd never discovered what had become of her. It was a terrible story, and one that pained him every time it came to mind. It was one of his gravest mistakes, his most terrible blunders, and one of the reasons he refused to allow himself to become overly attached to another.

And he had repeated it.

Without another thought, Shadyn slipped Lunaras back into her resting place and took off across the beach, dashing after the fleeing Alyssandra.

What DID I ever do to her? God damn me and my self-righteousness...my arrogance has torn another asunder...just like it did to her. I will put things right this time. I refuse to allow another to suffer the same loneliness as Oriana felt on my account...

Shadyn found his boots slipping in the sand. Alyssandra's bare feet allowed her to move more nimbly and with superior traction, while his worn footwear sank into the damp sand of the shoreline. And he couldn't go any faster, or he risked falling on his face. Thus, Shadyn gave up running and instead raised his head, calling out in a loud and powerful voice.

Alyssandra!

It was all he really could think of to say at the moment...Shadyn was so aghast at what he had done that he was having trouble formulating words. He just stood there dumbly on the spot, arms at his sides, head drooping soberly. He lifted it to gaze through auburn bangs at the young woman, whether she had stopped or continued to flee. His mouth moved, and at first no words came out, but then he managed to bring his voice forth. It wasn't loud, but perhaps her supernatural ears could hear it at this distance if she listened closely.

"You don't have to be lonely anymore..."
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things,
The hand that mock'd them and the heart that fed.

Alyssandra stopped running when he called out her name, and when she heard him speak yet again she turned to face him. She stared, had he not just wanted to kill her? No, she thought, it was just.... just his first reaction.... he was scared maybe....

She sighed and walked slowly over to him, stopping a few feet from him. She looked at him closely, trying to discover what had made him change his mind. She wasn't sure exactly what to say..... or do.....

"Thank you....." she whispered, "for not hurting me....."

Alyssandra wiped her tears and waited to see what he would say. He seemed as lonely as she was.... maybe that was what had stopped him, but she could never be sure...

Thank you.....for not hurting me.....

Shadyn raised his head to find Alyssandra standing just a few feet away, drying her eyes. His tallow eyes met her silvery blue pools and for a long moment, both of them shared their desires for companionship. In a way, they were kindred souls, both expelled from their own kin for possessing a darkness within them that they couldn't help having. Though Shadyn was a leader of angels and Alyssandra an emissary of the darkness, they were the same in their feelings of estrangement. It was these feelings that Shadyn saw behind Alyssandra's eyes, shining in the tears that continued to glisten around the edges.

Fanged she may be, but even predators sometimes needed others.

Shadyn was caught between his uneasiness at being around a vampire and his desire to not treat this girl the same way as he had Oriana. In addition...there was his own loneliness. Most of the time he managed to seal it away, hide it in a distant corner of his mind. Being alone in his case was self-imposed, and he had grown used to it over time, but still there was that part of him that yearned for some form of companionship. Of course he had Ira...but even she could grow stale after a while

Shadyn tore his eyes away from Alyssandra's and turned, taking a few steps away from her. He stopped, back still towards her. He just needed to...not look at her for a minute. Up close he could see her pale skin, see the way her fangs glistened in the moonlight...just like her tears.

A vampire who needed a friend...

"I'm sorry...I shouldn't have treated you that way. Especially not someone so...similar to me in many respects. I am no stranger to the feelings of loneliness and isolation, you can be sure of that."

He still faced away from her, and his voice had the sound on one conflicted. Part of him knew he shouldn't be consorting with a vampire. That was the part with wings. The human part, though, felt her pain and was swollen with compassion. Memories of Oriana were flitting through his mind unbidden, and he placed a hand on his forehead and shook his head vigorously as if to clear it.

"There was...another once. Like you. I hurt her...and I would hate to see you suffer the same fate."

Alyssandra walked up to him, even after he walked away, and laid a gentle hand on his arm. "Thank you... for caring.... but no matter what fate she suffered, I shan't suffer the same..." she sighed, "The words you have spoken this short time have changed my fate.... for no matter how brief, everything changes your fate...."

She removed her hand from his arm and stepped out to the sea. "Besides.... I have companionship.... that of the night, the mother moon.... and that of the human children I tend as my own, Raven and Isabella...." She paused a moment deep in thought, "yet sometimes their company is not what is needed... For they are mortal and far too young even in humans standards to understand my feelings of sorrow, and loneliness....... Its just that... someone who knows and understands is what I long for.... not even the girls' father, Gabriel, understands for he too is mortal......"

She laughed sadly at herself and turned to face him, "Do you understand?"
