Afraid of the dark? Wait until you see what the light can do…
As Manus stepped into the sanctum, he could not help but feel the prescience of something greater. Being back in such a well furnished place with light colored décor reminded him of his youthful days back when he held to the light with everything that he was. Many fond memories came back to him and he thus spaced out for quite some time. The warmth of his mother and father, his rickety yet cherished home, the table at which the family ate meager meals that did little to fill their stomach, but instead filled their hearts… eventually memory upon memory began to relapse until finally the vision of a burning city, blood, bodies, and chaos lay around him.

In a moment of shock he jerked very slightly and then smiled while bringing his left hand up and covering half his face as he held his head,

“That was a much gentler trip through the charred regions of my mind than I thought it would be…” Dark muttered to himself.

It was something about this place that gave him the feeling of comfort, but he could not place its source. He then lifted his book in his right hand and let it fall open then flipped through the pages until he found a blank piece. Manus next switched hands and pulled out a pen with his right and began jotting down notes so that he would remind himself later to experiment with the air here…

Goddess of Magic
Selena found that as the story of her ascension traveled Avalon, she was getting more and more visitors to her temple. She didn't mind, not at all, but she had to wonder how many were visiting because of their interest in the gods in general, and how many really wanted to see her and perhaps even become a follower. The people who wished to test her had long since fled, most of them spreading the word that she was not one to be trifled with - and that left those in need of guidance, those who were curious, and those who wanted to follow her left in the pool of those who would visit. "I shouldn't rush it. People will come when they come, and I'm doing fine so far on my own," she thought to herself as she communed with the magic, and then put it out of her mind.

During her communion, she was interrupted by a disturbance in the web of magics she had placed around the temple. "Someone is coming ... someone is here." She couldn't drop what she was doing, not without risking some sort of disaster, so she worked as fast as she could, before standing and stretching aching muscles. Selena was all too happy to entertain people, but she did wish that someone would send a letter beforehand or something; so that she could be warned. "They can't help it. It doesn't occur to them to send a letter to a goddess," she thought as she walked through the halls of her home.

Many ended up in the receiving sanctum, as all other doors were locked or barred by magic, and that was where she found her most recent visitor. He was jotting something down on a piece of paper - made her wonder if he was some sort of scholar. "Welcome to my temple," she ventured, after a moment of watching him. Selena wasn't sure if she'd startled him or not.

"How may I help you, dear? Do you have a request, or are you in need of guidance? Your soul and magic seems troubled to me...," her words were hesitant, and she smiled gently, brushing a strand of blonde hair out of her face. Everyone had a secret or three; it was part of life. She wondered what his was, to have so many parts of himself stirred up.

Manus stopped his thought process and looked up upon hearing the greeting. Sure enough he found himself being welcomed by a rather stunning woman with long and well kept pale blonde hair and eyes that held the color of ice, yet they retained a much warmer gaze. The maiden looked to be in her early twenties which “ruffled Manus’s feathers” a bit as his heart grew nervous, much like a hand with a tight grip. It had been some time since Dark had spoken to a woman around his age, but he knew it best not to let such emotions show. As always, regardless of how he felt on the inside, Manus always kept the look of calmness. There was another item that struck Dark and that was the fact that she had said “My temple”. At that point he could not keep his heart from racing, but still with his willpower maintained a strong composure,

“Would first like to apologize for entering without prior warning your highness… but after a detected the wards around the temple I did not know how to walk in without setting them off. Unfortunately this is the first time meeting you greatness and I have not a spell that can send messages over a distance. Please accept this sincere apology.” Dark said with a gentle voice,

“I do actually have a simple request.” Manus could not help but feel awkward speaking with a goddess so casually, “I have found myself interested in your following and wish to join, if not, learn of your worship. If it is at all possible of course, if you have other business then do not let me keep you.”

He was also intrigued at what the goddess had mentioned earlier about his soul and magic seeming troubled. (Is she able to see the very aura of my soul and magic, or did she look deep into his mind within that moment?) he thought to himself.

At least he wasn't too surprised and didn't jump out of his skin. She'd forgotten that her steps were much lighter than many and scared people before, just on accident. Selena knew that she was harmless, really, but most of the time others didn't know that. Goddess automatically meant 'big, scary celestial' to them, and because of her domain, she was considered even more frightening - or so she thought. That was what she'd found.

"Unfortunately this is the first time meeting you greatness and I have not a spell that can send messages over a distance. Please accept this sincere apology."

His words surprised her, especially in respect to her wards. She had tried, seemingly in vain, to hide them and make it appear as open as possible, but it seemed that something had gone wrong and she would have to look into that as of late. It hadn't occurred to her that people would be deterred from visiting if they could sense that around her temple, and for a moment she blinked. There was also the fact that he called her 'greatness' and she wasn't sure how to react to that. 'Well, he's a ball of decorum and etiquette. I'm unsure I've met anyone so polite before.' Had her surprise been so obvious that he felt the need to apologize?

"Please, don't be sorry. My temple is always open to those who wish to see me, and I am sorry that my wards were so troublesome. All they are there for is to let me know when there is someone coming and what said person might have to do with me - it's a defensive device, no more and no less. I apologize, dear, for causing you trouble. No need to send word beforehand - my doors are always open," she said quietly, studying him for a moment with her crystal blue eyes before waving a hand around her and dropping a bit of the magical pressure she had set around her receiving sanctum, so as to relax him a little bit. If he didn't feel surrounded by spells, perhaps he'd be more open to speaking with her.

"I have found myself interested in your following and wish to join, if not, learn of your worship. If it is at all possible of course, if you have other business then do not let me keep you."

At those words, she blinked again. 'Does he wish to follow me? As ... an acolyte of sorts?' While she had anticipated all sorts of requests of her as a goddess, she hadn't thought that anyone would ask for that. There were very few suited to the path of magic, and while she had a few priests who were helping her now, she hadn't known that others would be interested. "I do not currently have any others who are following me in the way that you have asked," she said hesitantly, unsure of what to say.

There wouldn't be any harm in it, and it would take the edge off the loneliness. She did need a couple people to hold down the hatches while she was on business, and he seemed nice enough. Selena wasn't given to trust, not with magic, but she could offer him things to do and perhaps teach him a bit.

"All right. I think we can arrange some sort of a following, or at least, an apprenticeship. I'm not sure how much I'm going to be able to teach you, but I will try to do my best. I do need your name though," the last bit was more of a joke than anything.

"Tis alright my lady, I shall keep that in mind for the future." Dark was shocked at the fact a goddess was apologizing to 'him', and for placing her own wards no less! At this point he could not help but be a bit wide eyed, but fortunately that was the only expression that escaped him, so within moments he reformed his composure.

She then mentioned that she had no other followers at the time which of course made some sense as she was new to the pantheon and thus very few knew of her existence. Manus was not expecting to be the first to make such a request however and thus this situation prodded his mind. If he 'was' to be the first of her following then so be it, but he had been planning on working his way up rather than starting at the top, regardless, he did not mind. It was then that she said that she needed his name and Dark could not have hated himself more for not noticing.

"Ah!" Manus had realized his mistake and made an attempt to correct, "How rude of me; I am Dark Manus, a traveling priest who has devoted his life to understanding and developing both the arcane and divine arts." Dark presented as he crossed his left free hand over his chest and bowed slightly. Even if she had meant it as a joke, he would not go easy on himself for forgetting such an obvious lesson in etiquette, especially in the prescience of such a noble being.

Yet another thought invaded his thoughts and this time it was the word 'apprenticeship'. Was she planning on actually teaching a mere mortal of her powers? This too was highly unexpected of her and this time Dark could not hold back his surprise and replied,

"I-I'm sorry your highness to say so, but do you not feel that teaching me 'directly' would not only make you seem less worthy of your position in the eyes of the other gods, but too great of an honor for someone who has yet to begin holding worship to you?" Dark voice seemed a little more concerned than before, "I will admit, I am deeply grateful, but should I not at least prove my worth before being educated by someone as great as yourself?"

As he spoke he could not help but notice the ætheral pressure within the room lift from the feeling of walking through a swamp to that of a light fog.

Selena wasn’t aware that she was so shocking, but apparently Dark found her so, and that amused her. Had she really changed so much from the mortal woman that she had been, or was he simply easily surprised? Perhaps a mix of both- becoming a divine entity, after all, had been a rather large change. She knew that there had to be parts of her that were acting rather strange, and that it would take her a while to adjust to the fact that people would be looking to her for guidance. She had experience on her side, and the fact that she was never really alone. With Angelo helping her, she had to do some bit of good along her rocky path.

Etiquette, etiquette; they could dance around forever playing the games, but that wouldn’t really get them anywhere, now would it? She was rather charmed by the fact that he stuck to it, though, and there weren’t many who were so polite. Most were quaking in their boots by this time in the conversation, and so he was a pleasant surprise and an addition to her day. At the very least, he would be memorable. Resisting an urge to tell him so, she just nodded. “Traveling priest, eh? Sounds like a good life, but hard too. I’m glad that you find the arcane arts to your liking, and I’m sure that you have probably learned a lot in your travels. ‘tis a brave thing, to devote your life to something.”

None of that was a lie. Her life was now devoted to magic and all that entailed. Not by choice, but she could not fight it either. It was as much a part of her as anything else was.

Perhaps apprenticeship had been a bad way of putting it, though she did wish to call him some sort of follower. Priest would be too high a rank, he would have to earn that, but Acolyte sounded far too lowly for the fact that he’d been traveling all his life and studying the art of arcane use. She was in a predicament, and had no other way of putting it other than apprentice, though that seemed much too personal for him to even bear it.

“Perhaps you’re right, dear. Teaching you directly would actually be a sin against the World Spirit, if I’m not mistaken. But I would like you to worship me, though that sounds rather conceited. I’d like to make you my follower, if you’d have me as your goddess. With me as your patron, I’d support you in your doings, and in turn you would represent me to the world outside. It’s a deal of sorts, or at least … something like that.” Her words were slow, but her timbre was just as kind as before. “And if you would like a test to prove your worth, have at it. I’m watching you now, just do what you can.”

It all seemed rather rushed, though she didn’t seem to make it that way.

Manus was pleased that his travels were seen as a brave quest rather than some boring pastime, especially since he was being complimented by her majesty. He nodded in acknowledgment and in thanks for her kind words.

Dark found it rather interesting that a celestial being was taking his suggestions and words seriously and felt rather lifted by it. She was completely unlike what he had originally envisioned a goddess and in a personal way, he was happier for it. She seemed like the type who did her job, aided when she could, and kept her mind down to either on a level with mortals rather than high in the clouds looking down on lesser creatures through their nose. She then spoke of something called the "World Spirit" and describing his role as a follower. He could not help but let out a weak smile as he spoke,

"Do not worry my lady, I had planned on being your follower from the start. I was prepared to carry out what you had just described without prior briefing. After all, tis only natural for a worshiper to spread the the word of his or her deity."

Having been raised by a priestess and having joined the clergy once before descending, he was already accustomed to being a follower and thus better prepared than most. She then told him to "have at" when it came to proving his worth which would have caught Dark by surprise had he not have gotten used to her ways by now,

"As you wish your highness, I shall do my best. However, my magic is quite destructive, so perhaps we could move to a more safer testing ground than letting me tear apart the sanctum? Of course this choice is completely yours my lady." Dark noted then raised his spell book in his right while letting the book open in his palm.

Goddess of Magic
Selena had become a sort of traveling knowledge seeker herself, in the days and months before receiving her goddess-ship. It had been something she had taken upon herself, to try and understand who she really was and where she came from. At that time, she didn't have all the answers, and could not recall the memories of her past life as a goddess. She had an abundance of magical power and little to no explanation of where it had come from. She had assumed it as her gods given duty to figure that out, and it had led her to Aziel, who had been her tester before giving her this position. Apparently someone had something good in mind for her, otherwise she wouldn't have started researching such things to begin with. 'I'd be lying if I said that it wasn't difficult, or even boring sometimes, but it is a noble occupation. He takes it with grace,' she though, pleased with her newest Follower.

"Do not worry my lady, I had planned on being your follower from the start. I was prepared to carry out what you had just described without prior briefing. After all, tis only natural for a worshiper to spread the the word of his or her deity."

"Yes, that's exactly what I want you to do. I'm afraid that not everyone has heard of me, and I'd like to change that without wasting energy by creating some magical spectacle to draw everyone here. Besides, some of those who have heard of me are of rather ... disreputable nature, and I'd rather change that too. Every now and then, I'll have a job for you that's unique- but when that happens, I'll call you here," she said, with a smile and a nod. It was just her way of setting down the law and making sure that she was obeyed and what his expectations were. "I'm glad that you're so eager. Not many are willing to serve on such a level without pre-thought."

"However, my magic is quite destructive, so perhaps we could move to a more safer testing ground than letting me tear apart the sanctum? Of course this choice is completely yours my lady."

All magic was destructive in some way - the energy had to come from somewhere. However, his request made sense, and she nodded, before thinking for a moment. "If you'll stand very still, dear, I think I have an alternative solution," she said, with another wan smile. She hadn't really thought of the particular spell yet, but with a moment of thinking it came to mind. Closing her eyes, she began to mutter things in a language long since dead from Avalon, but still known to those who were wise enough to seek it - her voice rising and lowering in cadence depending on the part of the spell. The air of the temple, and indeed, the walls fluctuated* and turned to black, along with everything else around the pair.

Everything blinked for a moment, and then shifted- the temple was gone, and they were standing in a grassy field. It was an illusion*, but one that would hold actual magical value. Anything that was destroyed, would just have the magical supply cut to it - none of the temple would be harmed.

"Does this suit you better?"

*The spell she's using is 'Illusion' and is a deity spell.

Afraid of the dark? Wait until you see what the light can do…
Manus was engulfed by the immense potency of the spell as it weaved over top the very fabric of reality. The æther surrounded him in a whirlpool of blackness then within moments the air settled and revealed a large grass plain.

Dark was very much taken in by the workings of the spell as Selena asked him if this new setting was better,

"Yes, this is quite nice, far more than what I was expecting I'll admit your highness." Dark said as he looked over his current surroundings.

Manus could not help but feel confused as to what type of spell the goddess had used. With so much æther one could have easily teleported, materialized, or even reconstructed the space around them, but now was not the time to study, now was the time to make an attempt to prove his worth. He had to show her majesty how much he knew of the arcane and divine arts. Dark then stepped away from Selena a large number of paces before turning to face her again, his eyes half closed almost as if held in a trance as he focused on the energy around him, his eyes turning a vibrant aqua.

Dark then proceeded by lifting his spellbook up as if to read it, letting the book fall open in his hand then pulling his hand away while leaving the book hover. The tome then began flipping through pages, but it seemed the priest was not paying attention to the book, but still focusing elsewhere. With his now free hands he let them fall close to his side but not close enough to as to brush up against his coat. While speak in a mix of arcane and divine languages he then quickly opened his hands creating an arcane circle in each, the one in his left was roughly the size of his book, the other in his right was the size of a wagon wheel. In that moment two dense essences of æther flew around him at an accelerating rate, combined over him and flew skyward some thirty feet before bursting violently with electricity sending what looked to be a blade made of pure thunder four times the size of Dark hurling to the ground landing behind him. During this spectacle Manus drew out a third arcane circle in front of him with abnormal haste. Shortly after the lightning blade struck the ground it gave out a shock-wave that bent and twisted around him as if being pushed away by an outside force. Shortly after, the blade dispersed and the electricity subsided revealing that the ground had been ravaged except for the one spot Dark occupied.

He then levitated his book back to his right hand, crossed his left over his chest and took a bow,

"I feel I have done my best to show you my ability to manipulate magic. If this is not satisfactory then I will do my best to improve my skills as you see fit your majesty." Dark said with a slight hint of fatigue in his voice.

(The first spell Dark cast was a simple Psychokinesis to lift the burden of his book, then the two spells after were Phantom Haste and Thunder Lance. With his new found speed he used Polarity Field to bend the electricity around him so that he would not be harmed.)

It was funny, hearing someone call her 'your highness' as though she was a queen. In a way, she was a queen; queen of her own domain and her temple. Selena would never ask someone to use that temple though, not when addressing her. Or at least, not most of the time. "I actually quite like that. Maybe I should start demanding everyone address me as such. I'll be come spoiled, however," she thought to herself, almost about to laugh, before realizing that she had to keep a straight face. Manus was trying to show her something, and her mind was obviously wandering - what did that tell him? He might think that she didn't even care, and that was exceedingly far from the truth.

Selena hadn't expected him to really understand the workings of her spell, though she had a feeling that he was about to try and puzzle it out. There were many things about the powers she possessed now that did not make sense, no matter how one tried to think about it. It seemed like all logic disappeared once you were appointed a deity. You weren't all powerful, but you were damn near close enough.

It was a nifty display of magic, and Selena was impressed. "He has good control, and he knows what he's doing. Something is bound to the book, he seems to want to have it with him, or at least, read from it. However, he doesn't necessarily have to be in contact with it to use spells. Interesting. The circles are a nice touch, but that's a personal preference. Some chant, some use now words at all, and some use hand gestures. Everything was neatly done. There wasn't any chance of his magic going awry, and it was relatively safe." All of the analytical part of her evaluation was thought to herself, fearing that if she spoke it outloud, he would get nervous. "He will be a good addition to my temple."

"I daresay you did far more than an adequate job," she said with a smile, clapping her hands and breaking her illusion, causing the temple hall to reappear around them. "You're very good with what power you do have, and I'm sure if you learned more spells and had more combat (or even arcane) experience, you could be a mage to rival the best. As of right now, you have a little bit more to learn; but we all do. Even I have things I do not know and understand."

With a nod, she held up her hand, noting his tired attitude. "Please. You have been accepted, and done well enough. I bid you to rest here, and take up your duties as one of my followers. You're much more than accepted, and I'm glad that you choose to serve me. You would be a formidable enemy had you not. Rest, Manus, and then do my workings."

Manus watched and listened as Selena gave her approval. He was very touched by her words, but he knew not to let that go to his head.

Dark then took a deep breath to relax himself, and walked over to his goddess as the Temple shifted back into existence, his steps going from the soft brushing sound of grass to that of the taps of a solid stone floor. He stopped before her and took another bow, this time the faint notice of a smile could be seen as he did,

"Thank you very much my lady, your words are much appreciated." Dark was happy he could please his new master/teacher and listened to her as she spoke of his acceptance,

"I will do my best to learn the arts of spellcraft and to teach others of your prescience." Manus spoke softly and then stood bowed again before her, this time to say goodbye, "Now that I am finished, I'm sure you have much work to do. Thank you for your time your highness, I look forward to your teachings. Farewell your majesty..."

Dark then turned and left at a slow, leisurely pace, taking in more of the temple before stepping out into the sun again.

((ooc: Thank you, see you in the cbox later xD))
