The black sky was starless and full of dark clouds, soft winds blowing through the trees, whispering against the leaves.
The weather was still nice and the temperature pleasantly warm, even if the night promised tempest: it was a moment sliced out of time, the calm before the storm: all the creatures of the night, be them prey, predator or scavenger, seemed to feel it, from the smallest critter to the mightiest wolf.
Nothing living was moving, nothing living was making a sound.
A world waiting for something to happen.

And something did happen. The clouds tore open, the wind blew with renewed strength, howling like a beast in pain. A sudden flash, much like lighting, only of a darker, purple color, streaked the night sky, falling right in the middle of a small clearing, silencing everything again for a second; the clap of thunder followed, so loud it could be heard for miles.

Inside the clearing was now just a perfectly circular dark patch, no more than a couple of meters wide.
The grass inside of it looked long dead, not exactly burned, but drained of all vitality and color; the ground itself was blackened, brittle and frail.

At the center of the circle of dead grass was a man, kneeling, one hand placed on the ground, the arm shaking with fear, his eyes wide with shock. He moved his other hand to his throat, as if checking for a beat.

Alive

He was alive. That was.. unexpected, but pleasant nevertheless.
The banishment had been as painful as his master could have made it, but.. he was still alive. Powerless and in the wrong world, but alive and somewhat well.
That was.. good, right?
His mind felt.. painfully limited, and his thoughts confused, jumbled and incomplete: he was barely able to visualize concepts and ideas, fully formed phrases escaping his grasp, for now.
Was that how it was to have a human mind? Or just yet another nasty, unexpected side-effect of the latest.. problems?
With some luck, it wouldn't be anything permanent.
As his mind briefly touched the memories of the last events, they started to flood him, leaving the man too stunned to even breathe. With a low growl and a shake of his head, he forced it all back into a tiny, sealed corner of his mind: there would be time for this all later, now he had other problems to deal with.

Rest. Food. Survival

He rose to his feet, his shaking legs almost failing him, and started moving.

Can't allow people to find me here. The place stinks with demonic magic. Must get away.

And so he walked, going on for what felt like an eternity, but, with the constant breaks to catch breath against trees, the shock and the fact that he had no idea of where he was headed, he probably didn't make more than a few hundred meters before falling to the ground and fainting, exhausted.

Great.. still stink like a demon.. hopefully.. animals.. keep away..

Satania heard the loud clap, and saw a strange sort of lightening bolt in the sky. She ran to where it struck, a bit scared, but not really paying attention to her fear. She ran clasping her bow tightly. Nearly to the area the bolt had struck she saw a guy. He looked weak. She sighed, she had been hoping for action, but some strange guy was all she found.

She walked up to him, "Are you alright?" He looked famished, hungry, weak.... she got worried, naturly she worried over everyone, unless they made her angry. "Are you hungry?"

"Are you alright?"

He had no idea how long he had been unconscious, but it couldn't have been too long: it still felt like a horse just trampled him.
And then decided to stand on his stomach.
And perhaps start jumping up and down.
At least, his mind had cleared up a bit, and his thoughts stopped coming to him as if through a sea of mud.

He kept his eyes shut for a bit more, taking some time to himself while the voice still believed him unconscious, trying to figure out a suitable excuse for his presence in that accursed forest.
And he didn't even know -where- the place was, exactly: he had hoped to have some more time with himself before having to give explanations.
On the bright side, his wrists weren't tied , and he wasn't about to be set on fire on a stake.
At least, not yet.

"Are you hungry?"

...and he had a woman worrying about him, he was almost forgetting about that. He better answer, before she started to believe he was dead, so he slowly opened his eyes, examining her outline in the shadows. As he guessed from the voice, she was a woman.. a young woman, with a lithe frame, sharp features and slightly pointed ears.
An elf.
He sat up before answering, leaning his back against a tree and crossing his legs, assuming an almost meditative pose.

"Don't worry too much about me, it isn't as bad as it seems: I just appear to be a bit.. lost. Do you happen to know the path to the closest city?"

Then he stood still, examining her reaction carefully with half-open eyes, hoping to be close enough to a city, to any city, that his question wasn't too crazy.
Smiling inwardly, he told himself that he could still just use the tried and true excuse of "hit to the head with following memory loss", if things became too hard to manage.

Satania smiled, "Um... there is not a city for miles... it would take days to get there..."

She thought a moment. She had enough food for the trip, to and from. She could take him there if he wished it. She knew the way blindfolded. She had went there so many times. "If you would like I can show you the way. It will take a few days, but if you need to get there..."

He blinked, taken off balance for a second.
It couldn't be that easy, could it?
Here by a few minutes, and with a guide on his hands already.. of course, there was always the chance that she was some sort of bandit, and all this an overly complex plot to gain his trust and then betray him, but who would bother with that? She had found him unconscious and unarmed, if she wanted to rob his nonexistent riches, she could just have slit his throat and be done with it.

Therefore, he decided he was going to trust the elf girl, at least for now, so he pulled out the warmest smile he could manage and nodded to her

"Of course, m'lady, any help you could offer would be more than welcome.."

And while saying that, he started actually getting up, trying to ignore the jolts of pain running through his body. When he finally reached his full height, heavily leaning against the trunk, he gave in, admitting to himself that, even if his energies were slowly coming back, he wasn't in any shape to travel long, for now.

"..but perhaps it would be a wiser course of action to wait until dawn before starting the march? Do you happen have a camp close by, or know of a place where we can stop for the rest of the night?"

..of course, just the thought of walking anywhere, as close as that might be, was enough to make him want to faint again, and perhaps never wake up, but if only..

There! Exactly what he had been looking for: a fallen branch, long and straight enough to somehow pass for a walking staff, thick and robust enough to sustain his weight.. for a while, at least.
Hopefully, enough for the first part of the trip.

Now there was just the matter of reaching it.

He sighed and gritted his teeth, limping towards the piece of wood and getting a hold of it, then tested its strength and, apparently satisfied, smiled again, this time more to himself than at the elf.

"There, very much better.."

He nodded again at the elf, tightly grasping his new makeshift staff, his voice just a whisper by now.

"..lead the way, I'll be right behind you"

She smiled. M'lady? She hadnt heard that in a long while... this was going to be interesting. He was hurt, she could tell that much. She sighed, and shook her head slowly."I live nearby...."

Satania walked by him, not willing to leave his side for fear he might fall. She lead the way back to the clearing that she lived in. There was mist, and a large waterfall. A log lead through the waterfall. "Right through here..."Satin walked inside, and lit a few candles for light. She offered him a seat on a wooden chair that sat at the small table within the cave. She got out a few clay containers. "Are you hungry? I have some soup leftover... I can heat it up...."

Soup.. that definitely didn't sound like a bad idea, in fact he barely remembered the last time he had a warm meal.
Or a meal at all actually: apparently, lately he had been far too busy to partake in the finer pleasures of life.. such as food, water or sleep.
Before he could speak, his stomach loudly growled in protest, giving away more than an hint to what his answer was going to be.
Grinning sheepishly, he answered the girl's question.

"Yeah, as you probably have already guessed for yourself, warm food of any kind would be welcome, and soup sounds just perfect.. then again, never as perfect an offer as this chair seems to be right now"

With a loud sigh, he slumped on the chair, laying his gnarled staff to rest against the table.
He half turned towards the waterfall, his eyes lost in distance, his mind racing.
How much time did he have before it was decided his life was too much of a threat, even in human form?
How much time before the hounds got released on his tracks?
How much time did he have to gather his strenght?
A day, probably, perhaps two or even three, if he was extraordinarily lucky.. three days that he was supposed to spend rolling in pain in a god-forsaken forest, fending off wolves and feeding on poisonous mushrooms..
As long as they believed that, he had a slim chance for recovery, he just had to keep them off-track long enough to get to the city this elf mentioned, then he would probably be safe.. for a bit, at least

Nothing he could do about it before a good night of rest, anyway.. he might as well be a good guest for the time being. After all, he needed the help of this girl. Focusing his eyes and attention on his host again, he started talking once more

"So, this is your home?" As he spoke, he motioned towards the cave with a circular movement of his arm. "It's a rather peculiar arrangement, especially if you say the closest civilized setting is days away.. if you don't mind me inquiring, why such a choice?"

Satin smiled at him as he sat down. She giggled softly, and put the cauldron over the fire she had built. She heard him ask her about her home preference.

"Well.... I dont like the city... it is crowded and I dont like being outside of nature. Here I feel at home, and safe...." She took a deep breath. "I dont like the air there either.... it can make you sick, it is filled with smoke and toxins....."

She put a lid on the cauldron and sat down on a chair next to him. "After you eat... you may sleep if you like...." She said softly motioning to a cot in e far corner of the cave.

He lifted his nose to the air as the smell of warm soup began to fill up the room, inhaling it deeply and causing his stomach to growl even louder than before. It was really going to get embarrassing, if he didn't manage to get something to eat soon.. at this point he didn't even care if the soup was made with rocks, leaves and mold.
Luckily for him, it smelled much better than that.
He rose to his feet, getting closer to the cauldron and warming his hands over the rising hot air, at the same time getting closer to the delicious smell that was filling the place.

He half-listened to her answer before replying again, without turning away from the wall.
"Smoke and toxins? Last time I was there, it wasn't as bad as you describe.. sure, you could have the occasional alchemical lab blowing up for no apparent reason and filling the air with noxious fumes, but that rarely is the sort of error an alchemist makes twice. And apart from this sort of occasional accident, cities were mostly safe, if you avoided seedy dark alleys and ill-reputed taverns.. then again, it's been a.. while, since I've been in a city big enough, so I guess I'll just have to trust your judgment on the matter. Sadly, I still need to get there as fast as possible."
And, he added only for himself to hear, in as few pieces possible.
Ideally, one.

When she added the offer for a cot to sleep in, he was torn. On one hand, he badly needed all the rest he could get, but on the other.. he wasn't even sure he could manage to get some. He wasn't used of being in such a vulnerable state, and even less being so while not alone.
He could almost hear the voice in his mind, whispering of violence..
"Slit her throat", it said "Slit her throat and be done with it. Who'll find about it? She lives here, alone, and you need a safe haven".

So he remained silent, his eyes staring at the cave wall but not really looking at it, lost in thought, thinking of a way to change the topic for now.

"So, what sorts of rabid wildlife can we expect to meet on the way to the town?"

She sighed, "Well... bears, cougars.... anything really... but most dont mess with me...." She was going to say more on the subject but a roar was heard outside. "If you will excuse me a moment...." She walked over to a corner of the cave, and pushed a large rock out of the opening there. Inside there was meat, and other things that needed be kept cold. She removed a peice of raw meat and walked outside.

There was a large cougar standing right infront of the waterfall, and Satin threw it the meat. She then turned and walked back inside. A few moments later the cougar came into the cave, and layed down by the fireplace. Satin smiled, and petted it softly. "Sir... I would like you to meet my pet... Jasmine....."

Nether cursed under his breath, turning towards the source of the growl and jumping back a good foot after seeing the creature, barely managing to avoid stumbling against the cauldron and setting his own clothes on fire in surprise.
Swallowing curses in foreign and exotic languages, he managed to steel himself against running away, and tried to analyze the situation.
Instead, he backed away slowly, leaving more and more room near the fireplace as the elf and the animal neared it, never ceasing to keep his eyes locked on them.

No flames from the mouth, no shoulder at the height of his face, no dark-armored knight riding on it, friendly with the elf.. not an hellhound, probably.
You could never be sure enough, though.

"You have interesting acquaintances, m'lady.. this sure explains another part of your reasons for not liking cities.. I doubt they would allow you to just waltz in with your friend behind you... though I'll admit I'd be curious to see the face of the guard trying to convince you to muzzle her"

Regaining confidence and composure, he moved closer to the strange duo, the elf and the beast, still maintaining a safe distance, staring at them with curious, dark eyes.
Apparently satisfied, he reached again for his chair, slumping on it with an exhausted sigh.
He didn't know much of animals, but the cougar seemed like a magnificent beast.. a bit bigger than what he was comfortable with, and it looked a bit wilder, too.
But it was probably just a matter of perspective.
Besides, he kind of liked the name Jasmine, it had a nice ring to it.

"You're a certainly peculiar duo of friends, that's sure. I bet the story of how you found her must be quite interesting. Care to share some of the juicy details with a stranger?"

Satin smiled and went to sit near him. She patted the ground near her and Jasmine came to lay down. Her head in Satin's lap.

"It started when I was young...." she began, her eyes going into a trance like state. "There was a great fire... my parents perished, but Jasmine pulled me from the flames.... Father had brought her to me for my birthday.... she was a mere cub then... we did everything together, and we still do.... we are inseperable... I was badly burned.... I couldnt move.... she carried me to a house, and they tended me, and raised me as their own......" She sighed, closing her eyes as a tear fell slowly down her face, he need not know of the man whom hurt her.... he need not know that another reason she tended Jasmine was because even when that man left and stopped loving her.... she knew Jasmine never would.... animals were more trustworthy than people. "Ever since those people passed away.... she has been my only company.... along with other animals of the forest of course, I have befriended many of them merely because they know they can trust me...."

She glanced towards the fire, images of her past appearing in the flames, bits and pieces of her memory..... scenes of pain, suffering...... scenes of happiness and laughter, and love.....

Was she even still talking to him?
Her voice had gained that monotone inflexion that people use when they are busy remembering loudly, not telling others.. and her gaze, fixed into the flames, only added to that idea.
He allowed himself to get lost in her voice, paying attention to one word every three, his own half closed eyes lost, watching the cyclic dance of the flame, his mind beginning to wander.
He had never been a fan of animals, but knew betrayal.
Perhaps she had a point, but.. humans were more entertaining, always so unpredictable, and at the same time so easy to read.. not really that much different from animals, actually.

Was he supposed to say something to her? He wasn't exactly empathic, and, to be honest, had bigger things to worry about right now.. he didn't know, so he just let her talk.. maybe she just needed a friendly ear?
As much as she liked animals, she probably enjoyed company herself, from time to time..

"The soup seems to be ready. Keep sitting, I'll take care of it"

Saying that, he walked to the pot, grabbing a kettle to serve two portions of steaming of soup in clay bowls, placing one in front of each of them.
Staying one extra second above the bowls, he allowed the much welcome scent to tickle his nostrils.
He definitely needed food, as his stomach promptly reminded him with yet another fierce growl.
He covered the pot again, thinking of placing it back in its place, then, with a guilty half-smile, he decided to leave it there.
There was a good chance he was in the mood of second servings after the first, after all.

"One bowl for the kitten too?"
Smiling, he nodded towards Jasmine, and, without waiting for an answer, slumped again on the chair he had been using 'till then, warming his hands on the hot bowl before getting a hold of a spoon, and starting to dip it in the dense soup.

Satin shook her head, "No, Jasmine don't like soup. Thank you...."

She took the bowl and picked it up, sipping from it like a cup. She took a deep breath and looked towards the door of the cave. "I'm sorry... I was rambling earlier.... thats what happens when someone doesn't have company for awile..."

Satin took another sip from her soup, and petted Jasmine.

Just from the outside a splash can be heard. It sounds as if something extremely heavy has fallen into the lake at the base of the waterfall. Maybe a small boulder or such. After the splash, a voice can be heard screaming HELP! I CAN'T SWIM! Somebody please save me! With his thoughts screaming out to him Please, or dear please let there be a hunter in the woods nearby who will save me....
