General Appearance:

Standing taller than most men of his kind, Drystan certainly has the look of a true warrior, able-bodied and with confident bearing. His very appearance suggests the ethereal, a natural air of nobility about him. His features are delicately handsome, almost boyish though he is not unmarked by the signs of maturity; golden hair flows freely to his shoulders, drawn into braids here and there, and he sometimes has a hint of well-kempt beard. His eyes contrast the softness of his complexion, sharp and calculating, a stirring blue.

When traveling, Drystan often tries to disguise himself in simple clothing, choosing to wear a coarse cloak and tunic in the muted tones of the hunter. In battle however, Drystan wears intricate armor and a purple cloak embroidered with gold trim, proudly bearing his colors upon the crest of his shield- White to symbolize sincerity and morality, purple to represent power and sovereignty, and gold for wisdom and compassion. He arms himself with a sword to remind his followers of the importance of honorable enforcement, a great hammer with which to uphold order, and defends himself with a shield to stress his obligation to protect the weak.

Values: Fairness, honesty, honor, humility, compassion, respect, steadfastness, dedication
Opposes: Bigotry, disloyalty, deceit, hate, greed

General Description

Having been charged with upholding justice and order in Avalon, Drystan has become the figurehead for the supporters of light and those dedicated to goodness, a natural counterbalance to the forces of evil and darkness. Drystan does his best to adhere to his own chivalrous code of ethics to govern, serve, and protect the innocent for the greater good. He makes it a policy not to fight or cause harm unless provoked, though his retribution is fearsome, and he is known for his prowess in battle as well as his counsel.

Although knight-like in policy, Drystan favors peace and friendship, and would sooner negotiate through a conflict than solve it by force. He is rather introverted, preferring to observe and make informed judgments before hastily rushing into action. He enjoys horseback riding, archery, and the hunt, and carries a gold-trimmed war horn among his possessions. He is a master of metallurgy and smithing, and is thus associated with blacksmiths and honest work as well.

Having been mortal once, the God is not entirely devoid of flaws, though he tries his best to carry out his duties without fail. It is sometimes difficult for him to decide what constitutes righteousness, and what is the best decision for all parties invoved. Every now and then, he comes into conflict with himself, torn between his own personal desires and his bestowed responsibilities.

It is said he is able to take animal form in the guise of a hawk or a white stallion to walk unseen amongst his enemies or to evade detection in the wilds.

History

Drystan's past in his mortal years is a legendary but tragic one, a tale worthy of the finest bard's tribute, though it has been lost to most except the God's own faded memory. Once a dedicated knight in the service of King Marcán of Leodan, Drystan had proved himself faithful to his lord time and time again; Marcán had found Drystan as a young orphan in the wreckage of a conquered clan and spared him, much to the dismay of his fellow warriors who feared the boy might live to avenge his slain kinsmen. The King nevertheless took the boy under his wing and raised him like a son, and for that, Drystan was more than willing to pledge his life and sword to his king and country. Under the guidance of the prince Eoghan's own weapons instructors and tutors, Drystan soon became known as one of the most skilled and virtuous knights in the kingdom.

One evening in his master's court, a visiting nobleman bestowed upon the King a young maiden by the name of Elaine, a harpist whose skill and beauty had never been seen. She soon caught Drystan's eye with her loveliness, his ears with her music, and he fell in love with her at once. With Marcán's permission, he courted the girl, and she soon returned his affections just as fervently, promising to marry him in due course.

Suddenly, a quarrel broke out between Marcán and a rival lord, Wulfric of Fallden, plunging both kingdoms into several years of taxing war. Drystan rode to battle alongside his king, making a name for himself in his enemy's lands as well as his own, before both sides finally settled on a truce after suffering heavy losses.

Marcán invited Wulfric and his men to his hall for a ceremonial banquet as a gesture of friendship between the two, where Wulfric caught sight of Elaine in her reunion with Drystan. He demanded the girl from Marcán to make amends, and with a heavy heart, Drystan allowed Wulfric to take her for his own when he departed as a token of peace. That night, Wulfric and his guards stole into Elaine's room, where he forcibly abused and defiled her, leaving her shamed and alone. She ran to seek Drystan's comfort, and when he went to demand an explanation from Lord Wulfric, he knocked the young knight unconscious.

When he awoke the next morning, Wulfric had already left with Elaine, and Drystan rode after them, gaining entrance to his castle to rebuke him for disrespecting his love and his master. Wulfric challenged him to a duel to the death for the lady, which Drystan fought valiantly and won, but spared his opponent the death blow. Angry and embittered, Wulfric fled to the tower where he kept Elaine, slaughtering her before intentionally falling on his own sword so Drystan could not have the pleasure of avenging her death.

Drystan fled Wulfric's men, narrowly escaping their clutches to return to the safety of Marcán's castle to apologize for his actions and explain what had happened. Meanwhile, Wulfric's first in command amassed his armies under a banner of vengeance, using the accusation of his lord's murder to declare war on Marcán again, though he knew full well it was Wulfric's own sword that had pierced his breast. When the troops of Fallden appeared at the gates, Drystan offered to give himself up as a prisoner or challenge the enemy general to a duel so that further bloodshed might be avoided, but Marcán refused, knowing the knight would only be dishonorably killed in any event, and there was nothing that could stop the enemy's advance.

Commanding his son, Eoghan, take his people to safety while his own defenders bought time for their escape, the King called his knights and nobles to arms as Wulfric's forces besieged the castle. Marcán dismissed Drystan to flee to safety with Eoghan, but he nobly remained to fight with his King. They battled fearlessly against the invading horde, felling every one of their attackers down to the last man. Drystan himself took the finishing blow for Marcán but fought on, finally falling himself beside his beloved King, his lost lover's name upon his lips.

He did not find eternal rest however, for the great power of the world had seen that Drystan had proven himself loyal, selfless, and merciful, and had held fast to honor until his dying breath. Drystan was resurrected, his mortal wounds healed and his lifeblood restored. He was elevated to godhood, given a life as everlasting as his story, so that he might finally master the Justice that had eluded him in his mortality.
