The familiar sight of clouds drifting past the cooking sun had grown old after a while, and tricking Aquus into thinking it was him that was moving, not them. His muscular lean shark body had been floating in the open sea for hours, once in a while feeling the cold tickle of a fellow full-blood shark underneath him brush against his back. He sighed, air escaping his gills and clenched rows of teeth. It seemed nothing was going for him in a world like this; so alone, losing everything there was. But that was nature’s call. You lost everything, or you gained everything. There was no between; and Aquus knew once in a lifetime you did both. Hearing the shrill of pesky seagulls circle over his body began to get on his nerves, so he took that moment to swirl onto his belly and dive below the surface. The cold ocean water engulfed his body as it had swallowed him, but eyes adjusted to the clear water just as well as he saw on land. Large tail propelled him through the thickness, pushing him further and further down into the sea. Glancing at his sides, he saw only a glimpse of merfolk that would quickly hide in the shelter of their coves…or perhaps of his own kin, sharks that inspect him with a light brush of their snout and then swim away uninterested in Aquus. Breathing in another gulp of sea water, he rose to the surface to meet the sun’s persistent rays. The warmth had met the cold breeze that dried his glossy skin immediately, taking in both air and water as oxygen. He thought momentarily about catching some fish and having a quick bite, but something told him to wait…he expected company. The cry of seagulls overhead was tuned out by voices in his head that told him something was coming. Large dark grey fins drifted underwater, keeping him afloat with ease that required no concentration. Gills flexed, taking in the water that splashed his face and neck. Ice eyes enveloped the scenery – nothing shown in miles besides the random pirate and fishing ships that had been there for, as it seemed, hours. |

Why bother moving on her own power? That would be foolish, when the tide could move her without her even trying. There was no need to use her tail, not now. She was so .... tired, but also so awake and alive in the ocean that the mer folk called home. How could she ever imagine leaving it, when it held all the wonders that Celie needed? The sea was a song in her soul, that had always been there because of her mer blood, and that always would be there. A woman, with the tail of a fish; it was the thing of myth, and yet here she was. Alive and well. Celie loved the sea, in her own way, and the deep sea had always been her favorite place. Things were at their most rustic, and it was live or die in this world- in her world. The sea was a simple mistress, who understood that the strongest and the most creative survived, when everything seemed to be against her. The fishing ships stole away more and more of natures natural prey, and things were getting at their worst, so very few still lived. Even the mer were feeling the loss of their people and the starvation, and they keened their anger, attempting to bewitch sailors and run ships aground. Word had passed quickly through her cove of a shark ... a shark ... man? He smelled like a shark, but underneath that was the underlying smell of man, and Celie sang her song in reply to theirs, telling her people that she would check out this newcomer, this disturbance, and see if it was harmful. It echoed as she turned and picked up speed by flicking her tail quickly through the water, feeling the water rush over her lightblue scales. Breathing deeply, she opened her eyes, accustomed to the water, and then propelled herself out of the water, flipping once in the air, and then landing in the ocean again, near where the shark had been reported. "Hello...? Is there someone here?" There was an unspoken assumption of "something" being tacked on to the end. I can smell something. In truth, the person she was seeking was behind her, but Celie looked around her, confused. The smell was almost right on top of her, and she floated atop the water, her eyes innocently stormy. "Either I'm missing something ... or I'm just stupid." |

He watched closely as the sun readied itself to set, the moon anxiously waiting to claim its throne hauling its starry minstrels with it. Aquus whistled a small tune again as his back lay flat against the water, perfectly serene in the tide’s gentle grabs and pushes. "Hello...? Is there someone here?" The voice was light, charming as it spoke. Soft feminine voices whispered over the ocean as a mer call rang out, the sound rather haunting and delicate in one. He waited, listened. The voice came from yards away, and for a minute a small sort of surprise lingered in his throat. Instinct told him to snarl, or just swim away and pretend that a mermaid wasn’t looking for him…but he was in their waters. It was their right to inspect what may be trespassing; and though Aquus wasn’t human, he was still an intruder. "Either I'm missing something ... or I'm just stupid." Aquus flipped onto his belly, still afloat in the water. He caught a glance of her; a beautiful thing she was. Blonde locks draped over the surface, lightly tugged along by the small waves resembling crested hands peacefully raking the watery plane. A sort of chuckle escaped his jaws, shark blue eyes drifted over her confused look. How cute, he had thought to himself, what should I do with her? Thoughts buzzed through his mind. He wans’t a gentle soul, but he had a heart nonetheless. Shark nature had only given him powers to rip apart prey as if it was made with water, and having the soul of a human had only begged him to destroy. But he wasn’t evil…he was indifferent. Indifferent to the little sea gem only yards away. “The mer folk send a young beauty to inspect the presence of a shark?” He laughed quietly, words of sarcasm spilling between his jaws. Dark eyes stared at her, only his head and dorsal fin had made an appearance. Tail glided underneath, in unison with the steady beats carried by the mermaid in front of him. |
