Q: What if my character has a natural ability? (Eg. Shapeshifting, being able to see at night, etc) Do I still need to buy a spell for it? A: If your character has a natural ability –that is, an trait that is held due to him/her being of a particular race (for example, shapeshifters can polymorph, vampires can see in the dark) you still need to buy the spell for it, but you DO NOT have to have a spellbook if that is to be the only form of magic your character knows. It may seem like a hassle, but it is only to be fair, otherwise the site’s going to be teeming with shapeshifters and vampires and whatnot… NOTE: A natural ability is not an ability that is possessed because of your character’s class. (eg. if your character is a necromancer, you can NOT say that it is his/her natural ability to raise the dead) Q: What if I want an item that isn’t in the shops? A: So long as you find a suitable picture for the item in question, you may PM an admin or shop moderator and ask for them to put a price on it. It is then up to you whether or not you wish to purchase it Q: If I have more than one characters, can I use gold for one account to buy items for another character?/Can I transfer gold from different accounts? A: Yep, you can use your money from multiple accounts to pay for items–to a degree. There is a limit to the amount of accounts you can transfer money from at once, because it’s quite a hassle for the admins if you want them to deduct money from say…10 different accounts as the money deduction is done manually. Exactly the same principle applies for transferring gold. There isn’t a set limit for the number of accounts you can transfer gold between yet, but it’s best that you keep it to a maximum of 3 if you can help it Q: I made a post to buy an item. It’s been a while now, and I still haven’t gotten it. Have I done something wrong? A: Nope. Be patient, the shops are run by the mods and admins who, like you, are people that have lives outside of Avalon and are sometimes too busy to do their jobs. At any given time, you shouldn't needn’t wait more than a week before your transactions to be complete –if you find that it’s taking longer than that, PM an admin suggesting that they should do something about the inactivity of the shops. Q: How do I become a God/dess/Guardian/Roylty/Noble/Follower/etc? A:If you want to be a follower of a God/dess or guardian, simply go to your preferences and click the "Joinable groups" link under profile options (or just click >here<) and click the "Join Group" link next to the group you want to join. After that, send a PM to the group's leader so s/he will know of it. You can find out who the leader is by clicking "View Members & Leaders" right next to the group you just joined. As for becoming a Guardian, God/dess, royalty or noble you must wait until there are free positions available. When this happens, an admin will make a post in the announcents forum, in which you may put an application to. Q: I want to be an admin/moderator! A: Wanna become part of the administration team eh? Like the God/dess/guardians, you’re going to just have to wait until these positions are available. Usually, when there is a need to recruit more admins/mods there will be a topic in either the announcents or positions avaliable board stating all the requirements and what you need to do. Either that, or the admins will just pick someone themselves. Don’t go PMing admins asking to become an admin/mod, unless you think you have a good reason to. Q: I’ve applied for a position! When am I going to know if I’ve gotten it or not? A: If you’ve applied for a God/dess/Guaridan/Noble/Royalty/Admin/Moderator/whatever position, please please please please PLEASE DO NOT go PMing admins every second day asking when the positions are going to be announced! It’s very, very annoying for them, and it will only decrease your chances of getting selected. The admins will decide on who gets what once: a.) enough people have applied, and b.) they have discussed the matter to their satisfaction. Just wait and be patient. Q: How should I write in a roleplay? A: Usually you would write in third person, past tense. You may choose to do otherwise, however, this is the most popular style. There are a few things you’d want to avoid in RP. These include: RPing using ’s, eg: Quote: walks into a forest, looks around, climbs up a tree* …as it’s rather annoying and suggests illiteracy. Using chatspeak/leet/stickcaps (this applies throughout the forum, not just IC boards) This is more or less common sense, but please don’t use chatspeak (wen u type lyk dis), leet (1337), or StIcKyCaPs. This is a literate text-based ROLEPLAY board, not some teenybopper chatroom. Q: What are these weird words everyone is using? Godmoding, powerplaying? A: There is a lot of different words you might need to know about. Here are the most common: Spoiler: click to toggle Godmoding Godmoding is, simply put, making your character invincible. It’s making your character do impossibly powerful tasks, and it is not allowed in role-play. Not only is it unfair for others, but it is also annoying and tends to evoke a lot of anger and dispute between members. Common examples include: dodging/catching arrows from midair, getting hit full-on by a fireball or something similar and emerging completely unharmed, fighting and defeating an entire gang of 20 or so drunken thugs single-handedly with nothing more than your bare fists and emerging completely unscathed, destroying an entire town with the blink of an eye, getting wounded by an opponent in battle and just “ignoring the pain”, or any other such impossibly powerful exhortations of power. You –might- manage to get away with some of them above examples, depending on how well you compensate for the use of such power (eg. Giving a thorough, logical, and fair explanation of how and why your character managed something so powerful. Or it could be that a really powerful spell your character used that drained a lot of his/her energy in exchange for such power…etc). The rule is not so prominent for those characters who are God/desses, but still remain in place for them as well. It may seem like quite a bit to consider, but remember, the rule is only there to be fair :). Powerplaying Powerplaying is, in a sense, a form of Godmoding and is also against the rules. Powerplay is when you control other people’s characters in your role-play post. For example, if you encounter someone else’s character in the forest and shout “hello” out to them, you cannot say that they looked up, smiled to you and walked over –that’s the other person’s job to decide what their character’s do. However, you can powerplay with NPCs (non-playable characters, ie. A character other than a main RP character). I suppose one is in most danger of powerplaying in fight or battle role-plays. However tempting it may be to control another person’s character in a fight, please do not do it as it is very frustrating and aggravating for the other person who’s having their character controlled. If you’re lucky, the other person will just bite the bullet and continue, but if you’re not, there’s a high chance you will get warned for it. Nevertheless, avoid powerplaying at all costs (subtle powerplay in situations where it can’t be helped is excusable) and you’ll be fine In-Character (mostly referred to as IC) In-character (or IC) basically means anything from the point of view of your character (like you being in your character’s mind :D). For example, and IC post would be a post written from your character’s point of view, under the influence of your character’s perspective, emotions, feelings, opinions…basically, In-character is where you switch over from being you, to being your character. Out-Of-Character Out-of-character (or OOC) is pretty much the opposite of IC, where you’re being well…you. You’re out of your character’s mind and back into your own, would be one way of seeing it. It’s what is meant by OOC boards –boards where we all step away from the imagined world of role-play, and just become ourselves and interact with each other as people. OOC boards are a way of getting to know the people behind the characters, which is usually a very interesting thing to do! n00b A term to describe someone who really…well, sucks at role-play. Generally offensive slang kinda…usually used lightly to describe a generic range of people who are either not very good role-players or are just general troublesome brats (or both! Actually, it’s usually both). Newb NOT to be confused with the above term, ‘n00b’. Newb, or Newbie, is just simply a term to describe new members. Thread Another name for a topic. RP/RPers RP is short for role-play, and RPers is, obviously, short for role-players. Used quite often. RL RL is short for "Real Life" and is used when explaining something to do with the persons real life outside of Avalon. Q: What happens if I get a negative post count? A: Well, for a start, no-one should ever have a negative post count. But, if you do something like buy an item that you don’t have enough gold for, you will wind up with a negative amount of gold (kinda like debt :)). If you have a negative post count, you will get a warn. We use to allow it, but then everyone started getting into ridiculous amounts of debt, saying that they’ll “make up for it later”, which, while reasonable, isn’t very fair to all the RPers who actually earn their posts before they buy things. In short, if you can’t afford something, don’t buy it.
