(Continued from "Nothing better to do...")

Tornac had brought the pair to the forest in the early morning hours, sun just begining to rise as Krieg slowed him down. The last hour had been a pleasant trot, with Krieg describing the spot, and heading out into town to find building materials to fix up the shack that he had found on the ground. If not enthusiastic, he was at least interested. "It's just through here." The man stated plainly, bringing Tornac to a stop. He dismounted, and helped Thirne down as well, assuming she wanted to dismount.

Regardless, Krieg stepped through the line of bushes and leafy trees to a small, open clearing. Wildflowers grew through the grass, and the peacefulness of the place seemed to both oppose Krieg's nature, and match it perfectly. There was, however, no quaint home. Rather, charred black wood stood up in the clearing, contrasting shockingly against the green of the surrounding area. The remains of the building stood as a monument, a testament to the random destruction that fire could bring. There were no trees nearby, so the fire had not spread. Perhaps arson, perhaps lighting, perhaps something else entirely, but whatever the reason, Krieg was once again homeless.

All things considered, he took it fairly well. A momentary blank stare, then a rebellious spit at the ground near his feet were his only physical response, though there was no telling what was going on under the surface.

The sun was slowly beginning to rise when they finally arrived in the forest. Thírne was half asleep by now, but was kept awake by Tornac's movements and the feeling of falling off every time she dozed. She heard Krieg’s voice and shook her head, ridding herself of the want to just fall asleep. She looked around his shoulder in the direction they where heading, and looked about the forest. It was magnificent sight, the leaves of the trees and vegetation sparkling in the morning dew. It made Thírne smile slightly. This was where she was truly happy and at home. Krieg brought Tornac to a stand still and dismounted before helping her off. "Thanks." she said quietly before following Krieg in the direction he was leading in, taking the reins to her horse and making him follow as well.

Thírne looked about the area that Krieg led her into, taking in its beauty until her eyes fell on the burned wood that she presumed had been his home he had found. A pained expression crossed Thírne's face and she took the last few steps towards where Krieg stood. She felt pity for him now more than ever. "I'm sorry." she whispered, looking about, her hand resting on Tornac’s neck. "Krieg..." Thírne knew nothing to say that might get the guilty feeling off of her chest at seeing the sight, but she was surprised by how well the man was taking all of this.

Krieg didn't move for quite a few moments. A quiet wind disturbed his hair as he stared blankly at the ruin. When he finally did return to animation, it was with purpose. The wanderer approached the wreckage, and kicked at the wall, sending it down in a cloud of ash. He would do this repeatedly, kick at an area of the remains, and bring it down. This continued for several minutes, silent except for the sound of his work.

Once the wreckage was down, Krieg looked back at Thirne. "You have an axe?"

Krieg remained silent for a while before moving forwards towards the burned wood, kicking it repeatedly so that it broke down completely. She could not leave him now, not after this. She watched in silence, not much going through her mind as she watched. So far it was not a good start to the day.

Once the last remains of the building was down, Krieg looked back in Thírne's direction and the words he spoke did not really surprise her. She shook her head slightly. "No, sorry." she said quietly, patting Tornac's neck nervously. "Krieg. I'm willing to help out. I have enough supplies to last a while. I'll help you build your home again if you wish..."

Only after he had finished clearing away the debris did Krieg turn towards Thirne, and reply to her offer. "...Thanks." He began to take their things off of Tornac's saddlebags. "We'll have to find another way to cut and shape the wood..." The once-again-vagabond opened the wrapped pack that he had given to Thirne when they left. Inside of it was a shortbow, a quiver, and a long, two-handed blade with a curved blade and a knife-like handle. Krieg belted the blade, and put the bow and quiver across his back, returning his cloak to its place around his neck. He was beginning to look like the man he had once been."Any ideas?"

Thírne nodded in response to his reply, rather glad in a sense that he had accepted. She helped him remove the things that where attacked to Tornac's saddle before undoing the girth of his saddle and removing it. She was sure he was tired of having to have the weight on his back. She removed the saddle blanket afterwards and then the bridal so that he would be free of the cold steel in his mouth. Thírne patted him once more before letting him wander off into the shade of the trees and eat his fill of the moist grass. She did not worry about him getting lost. He had grown up in this wood, and it was in this forest that she had bought him from an old farmer at a very cheap price, and she was very grateful for it. He had turned out to be a very good, sturdy creature.

She watched idly as Krieg unwrapped his belongings that had been wrapped in his cloak. She was rather surprised by what she saw. She had not expected to see weapons, but then again. She watched as Krieg strapped his weapons to himself before returning the cloak to around his neck. He really was different from how she had first seen him. At first glance, back in the bar, she had just seen him as being a filthy man who was worth nothing really, but as the hours had passed, she had begun to see him in a different light. He was interesting, that was for sure. Thírne drew her sword from on her back and pushed the blade slightly into the ground and leaned on it slightly, looking down at the slightly green blade of the long sword as it glinted in the morning light. "Using the sword will just ruin the blade, and I have hardly enough money left to repair it if that happens." she said, straightening up and looking into the forest. There had to be a way. "Perhaps... And I know that this is probably ridiculous, but perhaps their might be a farm near by. I know that their is a village around here somewhere. Maybe we could 'borrow' one from there." she said, frowning slightly. She looked over at Krieg and sighed slightly, examining his face. "May I ask a question? How did you get that scar around your eye?"

She was unpacking Tornac. She intended to stay. As she sent him off to graze, he knew she intended to hang around at least a bit longer. Though he would never show it, this made him feel secure, knowing she would be around. "As will sticking it in the dust like that." Krieg began to circle the ash-covered ground, measuring distances. "Together, we should be able to make this place halfway decent." He took a step back. "Later on, if we can clear out these trees here, it could actually be a decent-sized home eventually."

Wait a second... was Krieg being... hopeful? Optimistic? He was, and... it sounded like what Krieg was supposed to be. "'Borrowing'? 'Borrowing' is what small children do with a playmate's toy they like. We'll be stealing that axe." Still cynical, apparently, though. His respect was extended to Thirne, and Thirne alone. The rest of humanity was still exactly the same in eyes. His view was, in fact, strengthened because of Thirne's preference outside, away from people.

The man was lost in his thoughts for a moment, before Thirne's inquiry brought him back to earth. My scar? Krieg ran two fingers down the curved gash that had nearly taken his eye. He tried not to think about the injury, but now that it had been mentioned, he couldn't get his mind away from it. "I got it when I committed my crime." Just because he trusted her didn't mean he was ready to spill his life story. "It was how the bounty-hunters identified me when they turned me in. 'Here's that crescent-scar kid.' Might as well have not even given me a trial, for how well it marked me. " Krieg looked up at the sky, the trees shading them only partially from the morning sun. "We'll have to wait until tonight to go get that axe. A half-blind dog could see us in this light." Krieg sat down in the grass. "You should try to get some rest before you collapse."

Thírne shrugged slightly at his first comment, but not so that it was too visible. The ground was rather soft so no great deal of damage would be caused, not that the blade was not already damaged. It had been used in many difficult situations and had shed quite a quantity of blood. Besides, in her line of work, it helped to have a weapon that was not likely to damage too greatly. From what Krieg had told her back in the bar, she knew he hated bounty hunters, so she had decided to keep her profession to herself. She did not want to end up having to fight him, especially because of not being careful of what she said. She listened as he spoke and a felt a slight feeling of admiration for the man. At least he set goals for himself and planned to work towards them; it was an honourable trait. She decided in her mind that she would definitely be very content with helping him build his dream, no matter how long it took and no matter how hard it would be.

"Steal was what I meant by borrow." she said, a slight smirk on her face, as she pulled her sword from the ground and rested it against one of the many trees in the area. Turning around she leaned against the tree, watching Krieg again. He interested her, just the fact that he was different from anyone else she had met made him unique and a real gem amongst the stones. The guilty pang came back to her again as she watched him drag two fingers over the crescent scar around his eye. She listened as he spoke, and her expression changed to a pained one, both of pity and guilt, which showed even though she attempted to hide it, but in vein. Just listening to him as he spoke of this made her wish she had not asked. It brought a feeling of being a monster out in her as she though about all the young people she had helped lock away and all for gold. A frown crossed her face and she slumped to the ground next to her blade. He finished speaking, proposing that it would be better to steal the axe later when the sun set. "Aye, sure." she said quietly, a rather disturbed tone to her voice as she looked into the forest, letting a slight sigh out. She wondered if Krieg would still treat her the same way if she where to tell him what her profession was, though she doubted it greatly. "Probably..." she said in a monotone as an answer to the last thing he said. She probably just needed to sleep, get the thoughts and guilty feelings out of her mind. What she had done to ruin so many people's lives in the past had never bothered her as much as it did now.

"I'll stand first watch." It was kind of a moot point, as she was already half-asleep, but he was assuring her, just in case. Krieg did look at her a little oddly, though. He had noticed the sudden change in mood, and it made him wonder. Krieg rose, wandering around the clearing. The man paced for quite some time, both out of a lack of anything better to do, and because his mind always worked quicker when he was moving.

Now, Kriegsmesser, let's review. She hates people, but she has money. She saw me steal, and had no issues with it. Krieg could see two likely possibilities. She speaks in a thief's innuendo, but... By noon, he had gone over every facet of every possibility, and though there were many plausible explanations, one stuck out in his mind, and would explain the look of guilt. It left a few unrelated questions unanswered, but everything fit. He had spent four hours making sure of it.

"Thirne." He wanted to make sure she heard him. "I don't hate you because you're a bounty hunter. I hated them because they deceived me."

She heard his offer to take first watch and relaxed slightly, but her mind still played over the guilt she felt. She had done no wrong to Krieg, but after hearing how he had suffered at the hands of those whose profession was like hers did not help her at all. Why did it have to bother her now? Her eye lids began to feel heavy and she closed her eyes fully now and all thoughts that where plaguing her disappeared as sleep took over. She let out a sigh before letting herself be completely taken. She had not really realized how tired she was until now. Thírne twitched slightly as she slept, as the memories of her past cam back; all the faces of those she had handed in, and all for the filth that people called money. It sickened her, but unfortunately, money had a way of changing people, and even she had fallen, but not as badly as most people because she relied on nature to provide what she needed really, especially when it came to long travels.

Thírne heard Krieg's voice, talking to her. Her eyes opened abruptly as she heard the words he spoke. He had figured it out. Why she had to be so transparent she did not know. It was always her problem; she did not know how to hide her feelings properly. "I'm glad you don't hate me, Krieg." she answered; pulling herself to her feet and leaning against the tree she had settled beneath. "I feel guilty because of what they did to you. Indirectly, I feel as though I've betrayed you." she said, a slight frown on her face, but it vanished soon after. "You should sleep, I've had my rest. Thanks." she said, smiling weakly.

Even her guilt impressed Krieg. Not its existence, but her ability to step back, see what she felt, why she felt it, and how to deal with it. There was a stirring of a feeling that he had felt long ago, before the fleeing, and the betrayal, when Krieg was a hopeful youth. The man doubted he could ever feel quite the same as he did then, but he was beginning to recover. If Krieg had the same ability to assess his feelings that Thírne did, he would know that the walls around his heart were slowly beginning to crumble.

"I don't sleep when there's work to be done." A matter-of-fact statement. It seemed to be his preferred method of communication, at least with Thírne. "I will sleep once there is a roof over our heads." His use of the first person plural was also increasing in frequency.

Thírne looked away and into the tree line, looking out for where Tornac might be. She looked back to Krieg as she heard his statement, and nodded in response. "I can understand that." she said quietly, looking away again. "You’re an honourable man, Krieg." she said without considering anything. "At least let me fix you something to eat, you must be hungry." Thírne pushed herself away from the tree trunk and made her way over to the saddle bags which had been removed and knelt down, beginning to look through the packs.
"Have you ever... ever, wished you could change the past? I know it’s stupid to ask, but have you?" she asked, rather nervously.

An honorable man...? Krieg continued to pace the grass. "Alright." Honestly, he hadn't eaten in, well, days. He hadn't paid for a meal in even longer. Krieg looked at Thírne when she asked him about changing the past. Silence for a moment. "Yes. Many times." He looked at her, and then spoke in a way that suggested that he had thought about it many, many times before. "But, even if you could change the past, there's no guarantee that it would turn out any better than where you are now."

EDIT: What's the alt code for the "í"?

Thírne heard Krieg's reply to her offer and went about preparing them something to eat. It was just something simple, but at least it would provide energy. The other day she had bought some cut meat that had been preserved so that it would last long, so she put that on bread with a few other things she had bought and handed one of the sandwiches to Krieg. She listened as he spoke, glad that she was not the only one to want to change the past, the tone of his voice suggesting that he had wished it many times before. "True." she said simply. "So, you got any idea of what design you want for your house?" she asked.

Krieg leaned against one of the many trees, taking a bite. He made eye contact with her, and though he did not smile, he was certainly comfortable around her. At her question, he shook his head. "Stability. Aesthetics don't really interest me. You can do what you will with that, I'm just going to make sure it doesn't fall apart while we're away." Again, he used "we". Even if it was subconscious, he held some concept of connection between them. "I've told you about me."
