Ascension and Divinity

A Brief History of the Divine:

Upon the creation of the world, the powers that were released in Avalon’s birth cries coalesced into a kind of sentience, a spirit that permeated every corner of the world with its essence. This conscience is known to those select few who know it as the World Spirit. It is not a being as such, and it maintains no sense of identity; to simplify things, you could say that the World Spirit is the communal conscience of the world itself.

When the world began to take form, the World Spirit realised that balance was a tenuous thing, and that the various forces that ran riot across Avalon would tear it apart if left unchecked. For this reason it selected certain individuals from among the many races that had begun to spring up across the lands, and exalted them to godhood in order to govern and maintain the primeval powers, keeping them from tearing each other apart.

For a time all was well, but in due time the Spirit noticed that some of the mortal creatures that dwelled upon Avalon had amassed enough power to threaten the foundations of the world itself. Vexed, it contemplated this long and hard before it finally decided to solve it in a familiar fashion; namely by focusing and sealing the power of the elements – the founding stones of the world – into several shrines strewn across the surface of Avalon, and exalting mortals to guard and care for these locations.

Satisfied, it then slid into a dormant state, retiring from such strenuous, mortal affairs. In a final act it passed some of its conscience to a number of individuals, bestowing on them a different kind of power – the ability to sense potential custodians and gods, and the power to act as a conduit between them and the World Spirit, should they prove worthy. And then it slept, as it does to this day.

Defining the Positions:

God: One of Avalon’s deities. The highest state of spiritual being to which a mortal can aspire, a god personifies and represents any of the primordial forces that make up both the material and ethereal world. Some bring change, others strive to protect what already is. Most of the gods operate in seclusion, while others are more public in their dealings; either way, the world quakes with the footsteps of these exalted beings.

Gods are only mortal in the sense that they can be wounded and slain by spell or blade; their bodies do not age with time, and they do not succumb to disease or mundane poisons. Additionally, their bodies are far more resilient to injury than those of mortal men, and wounds that would slay a lesser being are often nothing more than inconveniences to a deity. Though their power changes from god to god, they are always extraordinarily potent, and have full command of the domain over which they preside.

Guardian: Demi-gods and exalted spirits, Guardians act as custodians of the various elements which make up the world of Avalon. In power they are less prominent than their divine peers, and their bodies whither and die with time to make room for new Guardians. However, they are still powerful beings in their own right, and while they maintain their position they have almost unlimited control of the element they guard.

Unlike gods, Guardians have a very clear task in this world. They are charged with the mission of protecting the shrine dedicated to their element, and so long as they draw breath they cannot ignore this duty lest they be stripped of their powers. This is not to say that they must always linger in the presence of their shrine, but no other duty or allegiance can take presedence over the safety of the sanctum.

Elder: Chosen by the World Spirit to keep the power of the gods in check, these men and women do not hold power over any particular sphere of influence, but are nonetheless considered to be above regular mortals in station. Chosen from the fair and clear of judgement, Elders seek out mortals chosen for divinity and test their worth through a trial selected by the elder herself.

While given few or no additional powers other than those necessary to complete their task, Elders are the only beings on Avalon that can make the boast that they have communed with the World Spirit itself, though most of them are in no way aware of it. Instead, their task most often manifests itself as a powerful urge or compelling emotion; indeed, to some Elders these tasks are so instinctual that they are hardly aware of them, and they go about their duty almost as sleepwalkers.

The Ritual of Awakening

When a new custodian is required, the Elder closest to the World Spirit’s intended will feel inexorably drawn towards them. Those who willingly heed and understand their calling will make the journey as ordained, while those less conscious of their own status will think it little but a whim of their own or mere coincidence.

Once found, the prospect is brought (not uncommonly against his or her will) to one of the many places in the world chosen as communion sites, where the Elder may speak directly to the World Spirit. The prospect is then put on trial by the Elder in question, to determine if their worth reflects the weight of the duties about to bestowed upon them. The shape and form of the test itself differs from Elder to Elder, though historically many have chosen a trial by combat.

If they are found worthy, the prospect is made to meditate at the communion site; the Elder acting as a conduit through which the World Spirit may grant the new ascendant power. It goes without saying that this is a mind-blowing experience for the receptacle. Their memories, thoughts and reflections on mortal life are forever altered – changed and shaped to revolve around this new duty, for next to this all other things will now forever be secondary.

Their very self changes forever, and though they do retain some vestiges of their mortal personality they see the world through new eyes; the lowliest farmer looks through the eyes of a king, a squire becomes a warlord. Exhilirating, empowering, and to some; ultimately corrupting. The World Spirit cares little for personal ambitions, and not a few deities are blinded by this new gift and the power that comes with it, driven to acts fouler and more depraved than they would ever have contemplated in life. It is often these gods that leave the greatest mark of their presence in the world.

Elder Ascension

For the Elders the process is, at least, somewhat more gentle. Over a period of time the new elder will begin to seem greater to other men, more charismatic and profound in both word and thought. It’s not uncommon that public Elders rise to a position of prominence due to this newfound glory, though some prefer to distance themselves from society for the same reason. Sometime during this period they will receive a vision; a calling from the World Spirit wherein it speaks to them, revealing a great many things regarding the workings of the world that no other mortal, or even god, is privy to.

Of course, not all Elders immediately take to this new calling. Some shrug it off as nothing but a dream, and though ultimately all are drawn to perform their duties many do so somewhat reluctantly, striving against the strange compulsions that move them to do what they must.
