Swords of sunlight pierced the rough curtains of the hotel room, revealing details about the room that was previously shrouded in darkness. Kali stirred a little, then opened his eyes to stare at the ceiling. At first he didn't know where he was. He looked at the empty bed across from him, and remembered where, and with whom, he was. Her arm was wrapped around him, holding him close to Avian. He returned the gesture, wrapping his arms as far around her as he could manage. He got up and felt his neck, noticing that he didn't have his pendant on. He crawled out of the bed to look for it, finding it on the desk.

After he put it on, he padded over to the bed, to rouse Avian. "Mommy," he said softly, shaking her shoulder to wake her. The word slipped from his mouth, but it solidified what he already felt. "Mommy, I'm hungry."

She flinched slightly as the light hat managed to get through the curtains fell on her eyelids and tucked her head into her pillow. Avian had not slept this well in quite some time, especially not in a bed. Usually it was a case of just camping in the open with only the stars to keep her company, but now she had kali, so exceptions had to be made. It felt strange having the little person lying next to her, but comforting all the same. Avian felt Kali’s arms come around her for a short while before he climbed out of bed. She really was glad she had stumbled upon this youngster now and all doubts and thought of leaving him at an orphanage where cleared from her mind. There was no way she could do that to him. He meant to much to her already.

A short while later she felt herself being shaken slightly and heard the soft voice of the boy. 'Mommy' Her heart felt as though it had stopped beating when she heard the word, and she opened her eyes slowly and blinked a few times to let herself adjust to the brightness.
'Mommy, I'm hungry.' Oh goodness, she still had to buy food for Kali. Avian had completely forgotten this but did not mind. She rather liked the thought of having to provide for the young boy and the thought of him as her son only made her day seem worth going through. She sat up, muffling a yawn and smiled slightly. "Alright then, we'll go get breakfast now." she said in a caring voice. "But first you need to clean you're self up slightly." she said with a slight laugh as she looked fully at kali, the same smile as before plastered on her face. Avian had not felt such joy in such a very long time, and nothing could compare to it. "We'll go downstairs just now, but first you need to wash your face." she said, taking Kali's hand in hers and walked over to the wash basin. There was a full jug of water on the old creaky dresser on the other side of the room with a basin as well. The girl poured some of the water into the basin. The dresser was not high off the ground so kali would be able to reach. "There, you wash you're face quickly and then we can get going." she said, making her way back to the bed and picking up her sword and sheathing it. It had been strange not having the extra weight of the sword, but was comfortable now that it was back where it belonged. "How's about today we go get you some new clothes as well? I’m sure you're rather tired of wearing that which you have on." she said quietly, making her way back to Kali.

The look of surprise that crossed her face mirrored his own surprise that he called her his mother. It solidified how he felt about her, but he still surprised himself.

(Mommy?)

(Yeah, Mommy)

His conviction grew stronger, and he became comfortable with the phrase. She's Mommy, he thought. He finally had a mother. His heart soared. A smile crept across his face like the sunrise outside the window.

"Alright then, we'll go get breakfast now. But first you need to clean yourself up slightly."

The smile of a caregiver, a guardian, a mother, shone on Avian's face as she studied the him. He was a lost child, wandering in the wilderness of life after the final tether of safety, his father, was cut abruptly, prematurely. Avian was the life rope that kept him from being lost in the ocean, forever drifting, forever wandering. Avian took the child by the hand and led him to the wash basin, pouring some of the water in so Kali could wash his face. He splashed his face with water and vigorously rubbed the dirt from his face.

"How's about today we go get you some new clothes as well? I'm sure you're rather tired of wearing that which you have on."

And the promise that he would get some new clothes?! He had stumbed across a diamond in the desert of his misery. The last time he had new clothes was when he stole them from a rich boy while he was hanging the clothes to dry. He looked at Avian with surprise, because he didn't expect that one to happen. Is she really going to do it? he asked himself, then seen the sincerity in her eyes and stride as she returned to Kali with her sword. His heart swelled in excitement. He couldn't believe he had someone willing to do so much for him. Avian really was his mother. Without warning, Kali threw his arms around the woman, tears of joy coursing down his face.

"I love you, Mommy."

The word still felt as though it was going to choke her, but she smiled slightly as she thought about it properly while quickly making their beds. She was now happier than she had ever been in all her years. Her past memories of pain and the likes did not matter anymore. Kali made her so happy that it chased away all the horrid thoughts and memories that normally plagued her mind. He was hers now and she truly and honestly did not think she could get used to it, but would do her very best for him, no matter the cost. Avian realized now that she would have to be providing for two and that she would have to give up her easy going life where she did as she pleased and came and went as she wanted. There would be no more killing for the sake of it; no, she couldn't let this little boy witness that. It still bothered her that she did not know why he had been so upset when she had first found him, but trusted that he would one day trust her enough to tell her by himself without her having to ask about it. Avian did not want to force him into speaking about it.

She noticed the look of surprise that crossed the youngsters face when she had made the offer to buy him new things, but smiled. She meant every word she had spoken. Avian began to wonder what his response to it would be and was completely taken by surprise when he hugged her. She had seen the tears that had begun to roll down his cheeks and wondered if it was a good thing or a bad thing that was happening at first, but then he spoke. 'I love you, Mommy.' That meant everything to her at this point and she dropped to her knees and held the boy close before pulling back and wiping away his tears with her thumbs. "I love you too, kali." she said lovingly with a caring smile on her face before wrapping her arms around him once more, wanting to cry herself, but keeping herself form doing so. She stood up after a while and took his hand in her own. "Let’s go get you some breakfast now." she said, leading the way to the door, and opening it for Kali to pass through before she did. After wards she locked the door and led the way, her hand still holding his small one, to the common room. "Shall we have something to eat here, or should we go someplace else?" she asked the youngster, wanting his opinion on it before taking any action. She did not mind either way.

Avian fell to her knees, becoming Kali's height, and wrapped her arms around him, brushing away the tears from his face. The child could feel her love blanket him. He was lost In a moment he wished would last forever.

"I love you too, Kali."

He pulled away at the same time she released him, and she took his hand in hers, leading him out of the room and down the hall to the common room. His eyes wandered the hall, taking in the details of the hall. Mahogany wood lined the top and bottom of the walls, which were painted a deep red, though the paint was peeling.

"Shall we have something to eat here, or should we go someplace else?"

Kali surveyed the area. The food that everyone else had was more like a snack than a meal, and Kali assumed that what would be the selection was largely snack food. But coming from someone who always had to steal his next meal, he didn't care where he got his next meal from, to tell the truth. The commons in the hotel was an indoor restaurant, and Kali preferred to eat outdoors, for the fresh air (and the habit of having to make a quick getaway).

His indecision was evident in the hesitation. "I wanna go somewhere else," He said. He got a floating feeling that he always got when he was about to do something he wasn't used to, in this case, someone buying him food instead of having to steal it.

Avian led the youngster out of the room, locking and pocketing the key afterwards; she had paid for a week. She did not really care what the place looked like; just the fact that they had a roof over their heads was enough to keep her satisfied. She waited patiently for kali to reply to her request and when he did she looked down at him and listened, smiling when he said he wanted to go someplace else. She did not mind at all now that she thought about it. It smelled like ale and rum, and after a while it was going to grow nauseating as it usually did, or for her at least. She had a taste for these things, but knew her limits and when to stop before making a fool of herself. "All right then, Kali. Lets go and find someplace nice." she said, a joyful tone in her voice.

Avian lead kali into the street and down the road till they came to a café with tables outside. "Lets have something here, shall we?" she said, pulling out a chair for kali and then beckoning a waiter. "kali, anything you would like in particular?"

Kali was lead out of the room and noticed that Avian had put the key in her pocket

(did she steal it?)

but decided not to comment on it. He had to live too long on what he stole not to know that saying it in public and out loud would jepordize their chances of getting out of the inn with the key. His eyes darkened when he thought about another time when he had taken an accomplice with him.

He had picked up the golden trinket and pocketed it quickly, glancing around.

"You didn't tell me we'd be stealing, Kali!" the girl said aloud, startling those nearby. He grabbed the hand of the girl and ran away from the marketplace as fast as his feet could carry him...

"Alright then, Kali. Let's go and find someplace nice," she said in a joyful tone, perhaps masking the fact that she stole the key. He couldn't get his mind off of it until they were off on the street; only then did Kali breathe easier. He thought they would get cought while still in the inn.

Kali noticed, a little late, that he was being led off to an outdoor café. "Let's have something here, shall we?" Avian seated Kali across from her and summoned a waiter. "Kali, anything you would like in particular?"

Kali was not a picky eater, seeing as that he didn't have the time to pick what he ate when he stole it. "Fruit and meat," he answered, his mind still on the stolen key. After Avian placed her order and the waiter dutifully went off to fulfill the orders, Kali looked up at her, a little too quickly and with a little too much intensity, and spoke quietly.

"Did you steal that key?"

Avian breathed in deeply; grasping the reality of what was going on. This was actually real and it brought such joy to her heart. Mother- her... it was almost unbelievable but she had literally adopted the young boy and she had grown attached to him emotionally and had decided that there was no way that she could give him up, but instead only love him as her own.

She waited in silence for Kali to tell what he wanted to eat and nodded to the waiter to get exactly what the young boy wanted, not ordering anything for herself because she was not hungry, and hardly ate in the mornings.

A look of surprise crossed her face when she heard what kali asked her. "What on earth would make you think that?" she asked, a serious tone in her voice, her expression one of surprise. "Kali, I’ve never stolen in my entire life, and I never will; no matter how dire a situation I might find myself in. to steal is a crime and nothing good ever comes to those who commit such crimes. It’s not honorable to do such." she explain, her voice remaining serious because she meant each word she had just spoken; her eyes in contact with the youngsters to let him know that she was being completely truthful with him.

"You understand don't you, Kali? Nothing can be taken for free in this world because there is always a price to pay; sometimes death. You loose the respect of those you love and care for, even those you don't know, and there is almost no way to redeem yourself.
I need you to make me a promise, Kali... Will you promise never to do anything like that? Can you make me such a promise?"

Kaqli was unsure if he could make her such a promise. He'd been stealing everything he needed for as long as he could remember. Nevertheless, he was determined to get the approval of his mother. It would be a big pill to swallow for him, but he would make it.

"I promise," Kali said solemnly, already feeling the pull to steal some fruit from the store he was in. He was in for a long ride, trying to stop himself from stealing anything he gets his hands on. He was ready to cut purses for his mother. It seemed like the moment he said he wouldn't steal, all opportunities to do so came up: a rich man had just sat down at the table close to theirs, carrying a fat bag ringing with coins.

(no, i promised not to. i can't steal anymore)

((OOC: sorry it's so short. My muse ran away from me. >.<))

Avian kept her eyes locked on the young boy but in such a manner that concealed her gaze; eyes hidden behind the long red bangs that hung partially in her face. With careful eyes she watched how he was reacting, reading as best she could, his body language to gain a quick response to her question and what she saw both surprised and pleased her a great deal. For his age he seemed very mature, especially since he had definitely seemed to consider what it was he was doing before making such a promise. Though she knew that it was most likely a huge burden on his young heart, it gave her the confidence to know that she could trust Kali always; not that she wouldn’t even if he had not agreed to such a promise; even if Kali had decided not to make such a huge promise, she would still have loved him the same way and would hide her feelings of despair for the youth, but that did not seem to be the case.

A look of satisfaction crossed the young woman’s face and her expression softened once again as her newly adopted son gave his reply.
"I'm very proud of you, Kali," she started, her voice soft and caring. "I know it’s most likely to put a great strain on you; pray you forgive any burdens that have been placed on your young heart." A warm smile crossed her face as the waiter returned with the orders that they had put in. "Come on then, let’s eat up! There is still much to be done this day."

"I'm very proud of you, Kali," she started, her voice soft and caring. "I know it’s most likely to put a great strain on you; pray you forgive any burdens that have been placed on your young heart."

It warmed his heart to know that she was proud of him for making a promise that would eventually be broken, the temptation so great. The waitress arrived with the food and Kali, being as hungry as he was, ate ravenously. It was one of the greatest meals he had ever had. Why he didn't plan to steal from this store was beyond him, seeing as it was an outdoor market.

Finishing his meal quickly, as was his habit, Kali looked around him, surveying the area for potential threats, as was also his habit. The open air resturaunt was filling with people of all walks of life, indicating a greater chance of making it out safely after a quick robbery.

(no i can't)

This is harder than I thought, Kali thought to himself, thinking of the promise. He would have to hold off stealing from anyone at any time? He wasn't sure he could do that for long.

The sun was shining brightly though the ominous rainclouds. The breeze swept by, bringing the autumn leaves with it. By the looks of it, Kali thought, It would rain on us before the day's end.

Avian watches as her son began to eat, her heart swelling with pride once more. He was hers to cherish and love, and perhaps, she finally had someone who would love her always without showing fear or distrust towards her.
Watching the young lad eat, she began to realize just how hungry he must have been considering how he tucked in and ate. At least he liked fruits and vegetables and not only meat.
The young woman remembered how her younger brother had been. He had hated anything that was not meat and would complain bitterly until he got his way. Hopefully she'd never have such a problem with Kali.

Avian ate her own food quietly, while her eyes wandered from the young lad to the streets and stores around them. Clothing was next on the agenda. She swallowed her last mouthful and summoned the waitress over and paid for the meals and gave the tip. She sat still and looked over to Kali once more, smiling.

"Right, I hope you enjoyed that. Now however, it's time we get on with the day. There's still much we need to do." Avian got up from where she was sitting and pushed her chair in before looking down at Kali once more, and smiling, beckoning him to her side. "Now to get you those new clothes. Can't have you in those now can we?"

(New clothes?)

Kali jumped up quickly from his seat, reminded to push his chair back in only when Avian did. As he walked by the table next to them Kali stole a piece of fruit, then, realizing what he did, ran back to give it back to the teenage boy, apologizing as he did.

Walking down the crowded marketplace, Kali thought of his family, the family he lost. He took a few deep breaths to steady his emotions enough to tell his mother what happened.

"Daddy was a sailor," he started, his voice slightly shaking. He swallowed hard, willing himself not to cry. "He took me on his ship one day, taught me everything: the sails, the crew, navi-... navi-..." he stumbled on the word, not quite sure how it was said. "He taught me how to get to where I'm going. He showed me all the parts of the ship, what to do when you leave, how to tie the ship down when you get back - everything.

"We was on the way back when--" Kali shuddered as he saw it in his mind's eye. "I saw black sails. The other ship was moving too fast. Daddy told me to go under, and..." His words failed him and his eyes welled up as he saw blood raining from the ceiling of his quarters. He tried to clear his throat, but it came out as a sob. "Blood was raining from the ceiling... I went up to the deck and... Pirates were everywhere..." He stopped to gather himself, mopping the tears from his face with his sleeve. "He told me to jump ship, then... then..."

He took a step back to run to the edge, but he saw a pirate come from behind and behead his father..."

"They cut his head off..."

The world seemed to freeze as he saw his father's lifeless body fall to the deck...

He tried to force himself to go on. "I think I'm the only one left alive from the ship..."
