(searching for light, we wait in darkness) Kali had a dream the night before that had scared him, in a way. He was confused as to where he was and how he got there. He was confused as to which way would take him to the exit or which way did he come from. He couldn't tell where north was anymore, or where the river was. He didn't know where he would find his next meal, which was one thing he didn't have to worry about when he had his father... Tears coursed down his cheeks. Sitting down on the forest floor, he cried with all his heart. With his father recently lost at sea, and him never knowing his mother, he felt so alone. The world can seem so huge and foreign to a wandering seven-year-old child. The sunlight broke through through the trees and sparkled on his tearstained face. He had no brother or sister to speak of. He never knew if he had any other living relatives on either side of the family. He really was alone. He dried his eyes and tried to compose himself, but with the image of his father being killed before him burned in his mind, it was a difficult task. He was getting hungry. It was nearly midday, the sun high over his head peaking through the trees. He looked around, picked a direction and started walking. He wasn't quite in the middle of a clearing, but it wasn't far before he hit the river; he could hear it in the background. Animal sounds were coming from every direction. He kept walking, but he sped up his pace, looking around to see if he can spot anything moving. He saw the sparkle of the river and started running, tripping on a stone and falling on his face. He stifled more tears, because he had to be tough. He had to protect himself. (only the strong survive) |

The sun shone bright in the sky that day, the warmth of the rays warming the ground and surrounding area. A pleasant breeze blew between the trees, carrying with it the sounds of the creatures in forest; the soft songs of the birds and the gentle trickle of the river near by where the girl walked. She had never been to this area of Avalon. She stumbled through the wood towards the sound of the rushing water. Exhaustion had almost driven her mad, as had dehydration. She had run out of water in her wineskin and needed something to drink desperately. Hearing the sound of running water brought a sense of relief to her. Out in a place like this there was very little chance of another person being in this forest; or at least that was as far as she knew. There was no one in this land who knew her or looked after her. Both her parents had committed suicide when she was fourteen, after their son had died. Avian had been devastated by their deaths, but the fact that they had killed themselves because of the death of their baby boy angered her. She had still been alive, why had they been so selfish? They had ended up leaving her to fend for herself in this cold dark world. She had always known that her parents had not loved her though, and all because of the fact that she was different. The girl was not normal, not anymore. When she was younger, she had been possessed by a demon. It scared all the people in the village that she lived in, especially her parents. Having what the people knew as a 'freak' as a daughter brought a lot of hardship onto the couple, and they where not respected in their hometown. It made her life hell to live as she grew up, especially making friends. Her experiences had however had toughened her mentally, and made her able to do things that she would not have been able to do before. Soon after her parents had died, her house had burned down, and so she was left with absolutely nothing and so had been forced to leave the village and wander these lands. Avian kept walking until she came to the river, dropping to her knees on the bank she put her hands into the running water and washed them quickly before cupping some of it in her hands and drinking thirstily. Having the cool liquid running down her parched throat was good. Avian looked up and about the forest. There was something else there, or someone. She could not really tell what it was, but it was enough to catch her attention. She stood up and slowly made her way across the river, in the direction of noise. Slowly she walked forwards, her boots now caked with mud and the bottom of her trousers soaked. Avian moved her hand to the hilt of her sword as she approached; the sound slowly getting louder. She could smell the being now, "human..." she thought to herself as a sly smile crossed her face. The sight that met her eyes when she finally saw the boy caused the smile to slip fast from her face. The child's face was stained with tears and the sun reflected off of the tear drops that where there. "Are you alright..." she whispered, kneeling down next to the child and placing a hand gently on his shoulder, before picking the young boy up. He was so small, so young. "why are you in this forest all alone? It's not save to be alone in these lands..." she asked, her expression changing to a soft comforting one. |

He wound up crying anyway. He was so used to it being whenever he fell, his father picked him up. He had been crying, since he found himself lost, for the better part of fifteen minutes straight. He really did feel alone in the world. He stayed down and cried silently, for the pain of losing the only family he ever knew. "Are you alright..." He heard a female voice off to his left, but he didn't look up. He was drowned in his own agony. A hand on his back only reminded him of his father, and did nothing to stop him from crying. Strong arms picked him up and he wrapped his arms around the woman, his face buried in her red hair. He so longed for the security that came with having a parent. He held on to her and cried for a good minute. "why are you in this forest all alone? It's not save to be alone in these lands..." "My-my daddy..." He couldn't finish the sentence, it hurt him so bad to think about it. That man had been the center point of his life for as long as he could remember, and to think he was gone was a reality he wasn't quite ready to wake up to. In truth, he was wandering the lands to find someone who would take care of him, to play as the parent he wish he still had... (mommy... daddy...) Avian was rather taken back when the young lad wrapped his arms around her and continued crying. She put her arm around him in a comforting manner. "The poor little thing must have been through something awful" she though, her expression changing to a pained one. For some reason seeing this little thing crying so hard made her feel pity for him. It made her feel protective of the small boy and she held him slightly more close to her. "It's going to be alright..." she whispered quietly with an encouraging tone to her voice, rubbing the poor little things back. She did not know what he had been though, but it had to be something bad for him to have dissolved into tears as he had. Something about all this remined her of Itzal, she missed him, but it had been some time since she had last seen him. He was the only person she cared for in this wretched world because he was the first person she felt secure around, the first person she had ever felt any sort of emmotional attachment to. Perhaps all this boy needed was someone to take care of him. She heard him begin to reply to her, his voice breaking up as he continued to cry. There was no beating that could make a small child cry like this, there had to be something else. Seeing how much emotional pain this little boy was in reminded her of how she had felt when her parents had killed themselves. Avian was rather lost for words to comfort the little boy. "Come now... Don't cry, you need to be strong." she said, puling away and looking at the little boy, a comforting smile on her face. Avian reached into her pack and brought out a small loaf of bread that was wrapped in some old leather to keep it from spoiling so fast. "Here, eat. You look hungry." she said handing him the entire loaf. She could get more, besides, he just looked so helpless. She could not just leave him, not when he looked so saddened. She had been left when she was as sad as he appeared to be, and it was for that reason she was as sour as she usually was. She new that a child needed to feel as though he or she is cared for, otherwise life can be the most horrible thing to lead. |

"It's going to be alright..." Sad to say, but he really couldn't see how it could be. It had only been two weeks since he had to swim to shore after his father died, and his mind is still full of his voice every now and then. He still closes his eyes and sees the man's face. He still goes to sleep and dreams of that harrowing day... He tried to gather himself, because he still can't live in this (big cold dark) world if he's not strong. "Come now... Don't cry, you need to be strong." She pulled away from him and he wiped his tears and raised his bi-colored eyes. She reached into a bag and pulled out something wrapped in old leather, which turned out to be a loaf of bread. She offered it to him. "Here, eat. You look hungry." He accepted it gratefully, eating almost ravenously. His immediate goal, before he met her, was to find food anyway. He had almost gotten the sense that she, if even in the most distant way, was concerned about his wellbeing... |

The young boy took the loaf and ate it hungrily. Avian felt a small smile cross her face as she watched the youngster. He must have been hungry. She noticed now his appearance. He was strange one; his appearance was most curious; blue and red eyes and hair of silver with blue highlights. She had never seen anything like it before but then there where still many things that she had never seen before. "Where are your parents?" Avian asked quietly. She did not know what had happened to the child, so it seemed right to ask where his mother and father where. At least she could try to help him find them. Avian waited for the child to respond, if he could, her hand rested on the young boys shoulder comfortingly. She was willing to look after the little boy. She apparently had a soft spot for children. "If you want, you can come with me and I'll look after you? I promise I won't let anything happen to you."she said quietly with a genuine tone of kindness and care in her voice. OOC: sorry it's so short

"Where are your parents?" Kali had only just started to get over his father's death. The question was like a hot knife that drove through his heart. He tried hard not to cry, but to little avail; tears ran down his cheeks. He dared not try to speak, for the first sound out of his mouth would have been sobs. He was no longer hungry. The thought of his mother's death brought an abrupt end to his appetite. He felt her hand on his shoulder, a comforting gesture that almost undid him. "If you want, you can come with me and I'll look after you? I promise I won't let anything happen to you." He could hear sincerity in her voice. She really meant it. He looked up at her and through his mind raced a single word (mommy) that stuck. He said nothing, but he knew if she was clairvoyant, she would see that he needed someone to look after him. |

Avian felt guiltier now than before, because the child began to cry again. "Damnit! All I'm doing is making the poor thing cry!" she though earnestly, really unsure of what to do to comfort him. She decided not to ask any more questions about where he was from or where his parents where. Apparently all it did was sadden him more than he was. After she had asked her last question, she noticed the child look up and though she did not know the first thing about looking after children, knew that she would be more than glad to look after this boy. He looked so helpless. She smiled slightly at him and stood up, after taking his hand in hers. "Come on, lets wash those tears away." she said kindly. "My name is Avian. May I know your name?" she asked quietly, leading the youngster to the banks of the river. Although she knew it was probably not the right time to be asking questions like that, she could not continue without at least knowing his name. |

"Come on, lets wash those tears away." Kali wiped his face and nodded, standing and going towards the river. He put his hands in the water and rubbed them together (like daddy taught me) before filling his hands and splashing it to his face several times. He had gotten his hair and shirt wet in his attempt to wash his face, as he had always done, then he filled his hands once more to drink the water. "My name is Avian. May I know your name?" "Kali," he said before raising the water to his lips. The water was cool and refreshing, considering that he was wandering the woods for a good long time before Avian saw him. He filled up on water and wrung out the top of his dingy shirt, then shook his head to rid his hair of the water therein. He sat by the water and watched the sunlight dance off the surface. He wanted to go home, but he knew there was nothing there... |

She admired how brave this little boy was, even though she had not yet been able to pry what was wrong out of him. She took a seat on the river bank as the boy washed his face of the tears he had been shedding. She wondered what race he was because of his strange appearance, though it was really the last thing on her mind. That was the one thing that could wait for later. He interested Avian quite a bit, there was just something about him that made her feel protective and good hearted. Avian knew that she was not always cold hearted, but that was just how she usually turned out to be, but all the bitterness and hatred towards the world vanished as soon as she had seen the boy. "There is no point in running, Avian" she thought to herself as she wondered if it would not just be best to take this youngster to the nearest settlement and leave him with the orphanage. No, she realized that she did not have the heart to do that. The boy introduced himself as Kali, it was a strange one, but pleasant all the same. "It's a nice name." she said quietly, watching him as he wrung his shirt of the water that had dripped onto it, her expression returning to an emotionless one. Just watching Kali perform this small act made her think of her own child hood and a small smile crossed her face. "You know... For some reason, you remind me of myself." she said quietly. "I know this really is not appropriate to ask when you’re feeling this way, but of what race are you?" |

Watching the sun dance off the surface of the water has a calming effect on the boy, which was the reason he loved the water. (or was it something else?) "It's a nice name," Avian said, speaking about his. He brushed his hair out of his eyes as the wind tugged at it and blew it across his face. It was a light breeze, nature's version of a hug from one's brother or sister. The trees whispered to the sky, a conversation he couldn't understand, nor attempts to. "You know... For some reason, you remind me of myself." A faint smile crossed his lips. Kali stood from the rock he was perched upon and moved closer to avian, which he had already begun to think of as his (mommy) legal guardian. "I know this really is not appropriate to ask when you’re feeling this way, but of what race are you?" The most of the statement, save for the last bit, flew over his head. "What race?" he asked, assuming that it was the question. "I'm a mix. Human, Angel, Faerie, and Water Elf. I'm only half human." He had forgot the rest of the explination his father gave him... (don't think about it or you'll cry again) "What race are you?" He asked, trying to keep the subject off of his family. |

She sat there idly watching the boy as he looked across the water that flowed by them. Avian looked away and over the water as well. It was pretty how the sunlight reflected over the water, sending out a golden glow. Tranquillity was a luxury. It was a wonderful thing about nature, the fact that everything always seemed so calm, even in the harshest of conditions. No matter what happened, nature never changed course from its vicious cycle. She looked across to Kali when she saw him move. A faint smile on her face again as he came towards her. Avian waited patiently for him to reply to her question, doubting at first that this strange little boy was actually going to reply. She looked out again as she waited, but looked at him as he spoke. She was rather taken back by how much strange blood pulsed through his young body. It explained his strange appearance. She pulled her knees up to her chest as she heard him ask the same question to her. "Human, at least slightly. I'm a demon of sorts. Possessed." she said quietly, a slight frown on her face. "I was possessed by a demon when I was small, about your age. Its caused me much trouble, and yet... it’s brought me a few good things." she said, her frown being replaced with a gentle smile as she remembered Itzal. "Are you heading in any particular direction, or would you like to travel with me?" she asked, holding out her hand to the youngster. |

Kali recoiled at her reply. Demon? Isn't that the race that did all those bad things to so many people? And she was possessed? A ripple of fear coursed through his small body. She has a demon in her... "I was possessed by a demon when I was small, about your age. Its caused me much trouble, and yet... it’s brought me a few good things." He sat as deep in thought as a child his age could accomplish. He imagined what it must have been like to have a demon control you for even a short ammount of time. All he could think of is that it must have been scary for her. A child, possessed by a demon at his age... He wouldn't be able to stand it; he'd be scared all the time. "Are you heading in any particular direction, or would you like to travel with me?" She offered him her hand. He hesitated, because he didn't know her that well. She was offering him hospitality... "I'll go," he said finally, taking her hand. |

She noticed how the child seemed to be slightly nervous about approaching her now that she had told him what she was and her expression became a rather saddened one. Avian could not blame the boy. It was one of the big flaws she had; being a demon. She was not innocent and would openly admit it, too. She had committed crimes before; killings, and as much as it hurt her inside, she somehow managed to swallow her guilt and get by each day no matter how ashamed she was of herself and no matter how much she hated herself for what she had done. A small smile played across her lips as she heard Kali speak and felt him take her hand. "Don't fear me...Please. I might be of a dangerous kind, but I give you my word that nothing will happen to you. I would never harm you. " She assured Kali, gently squeezing his hand in a comforting manner. If only her parents had trusted her like this boy appeared to. For all she knew, she might still have had a home and might still have had the two people she had been fond of still in her life. She shook her head slightly and frowned slightly. There was no way she would change the way things had worked out, even if she could. hard ship and pain, both physical and mental made people stronger, she had learned this the hard way and was satisfied with the way things had turned out. Avian looked down at Kali and the smile came back slightly as she slowly led him through the forest in the direction she had been heading. As different as he was, he seemed to somehow remind her of her younger brother, though why she did not know. He had died, but for the short time that she had known her brother, she had grown very fond of him. He was the only member of her family that loved her for but perhaps because he had been to young to truly know what she was. Avian fell silent, not really knowing what a youngster like this would talk about. No, if he wanted to talk, then he could talk to her. |

"Don't fear me...Please. I might be of a dangerous kind, but I give you my word that nothing will happen to you. I would never harm you." At these words, Kali felt some measure of relief, knowing that he wasn't a target of hers. But he still wondered if he was safe in the long run from her demon side. After all, she may say she's not going to attack him now, but when she turns demon, will she still have the same frame of mind? Kali had his eyes on the ground as they trekked through the forest, going along the river. The sun was beginning to set, but he was far from being tired yet. He wondered where they were going, what she was going to do once they get to their destination, and other such questions. The evening sunlight pierced through the leaves of the trees overhead. Fireflies lit the path dimly, making the forest itself seem magical. Animals begun to get restless around them, growing louder with each passing moment. Some of the animals he heard were closer to him than he felt comfortable with. He clung to Avian as he walked. He didn't want something to jump out at him... After a few minutes of walking in a serene silence, his curiosity had gotten the better of him. "Where are we going" he asked softly, trying not to sound like he suspected she would take him somewhere that would get him killed. |
