It all started with a small experiment. Arcane books showed that ancients used magic to reincarnate monsters, demons and spirits from everyday items. The art was called summoning and it had all the dwarves interested. Though dwarves were strong and numerous, sometimes there was a need for extra firepower and the idea of summoning a seven foot giant to aid in war, battles and even everyday task was very alluring.

The experiment took place deep in the tunnels of Relruan, were none would be hurt, unless they went looking for trouble. The mages used their magic to extract a soul from a chunk of iron. Weeks went by and still they had no result. But then one fateful day, they combined their own magical energies with the dormant spirit or magical awareness of iron. The chunk of iron shone, light engulfed the tunnel and a creature was born. The mages gave it orders, but it reacted by charging towards them and crushing them with its huge feet.

The survivors named it Iron Rhino. It was a six foot rhinoceros-like beast covered in iron armor. Its back, chest, its horn, claws and even its teeth were reinforced by the metal. It was violent by nature, and charged at anything that came before it. It would take very brave souls to battle this creature, but only those that could offer strength along with bravery would survive.

The first thing Haldor did was send for help from the other towns in Gramayre. Then posted guard along the entrance of Relruan, the tunnels that connected with Dalruan and even Tirnag Mell. The creature was not to leave the tunnels; interaction with nature would be extremely hazardous. They could not risk exposing the world to a dwarven created threat. If the beast were to reach the outside world, relationship between humans and dwarves would at stake. But that would not be the case, the beast was to be hunted in the tunnels and terminated before it even saw daylight, or so Haldor hoped.

Haldor entered the tunnels with several dwarven warriors. They spit up into groups of three and began exploring the dark tunnels. Had the mines been smaller, this whole adventure would’ve been easier, but these were a labyrinth of intertwined tunnels large enough for a caravan to pass. Often large beasts were used to dig the tunnels and though they were large, wide and roomy enough for that damned Iron Rhino to thread.

After several hours of searching Haldor’s group found the beast. It was large; it stood on its hind legs, roaring and thrashing, as if it were on fire or was in some sort of pain, perhaps it was in its nature to be angry. When it spotted the three warriors, it charged towards them, headfirst. The dwarves dodged easily enough however. Haldor drew his cinquedea and his comrades took out their swords and axes.

Before Haldor could warn them, the two men charged at the beast, thinking they could easily overpower it. Their swords clanged against its iron skin. A swift lunged of its powerful claws sent one flying towards the rocky wall and instantly into the realm of death. The other one struck its legs with a powerful axe, but once again it seemed to have no effect. The Rhino however killed him with a powerful kick that sent the man crashing against the roof. In seconds Haldor was left alone with the Iron Rhino. The enraged beast opened its powerful jaws and breathed a stream of fire towards Haldor. He rolled to the right, barely dodging the fiery stream of red death and ran off into the tunnels. The beast heavy footsteps echoed behind him and if help didn’t get here soon… it would be the end.

She knew little of experiments and iron beasts, there was only the sword and the knowledge of guardian and deity that struck home with the girl. Human only she may be, but she had bested plenty of demons, angels, vampires, and other creatures. And this was all before recent times, even in her farthest youth, (after all she was far from being an elder like her subtitle suggested) she had bested plenty of foes. But these days were peaceful ones, for her at least, she knew not of the war or plague settling across these lands, at least not at this point in time. All Arcaine knew was that she kept the sacred lands sacred, fought those who tried to disgrace it, and assisted in general upkeep. No easy task for a girl like her, she was far more interested in fighting and testing and adventuring than cleaning old ruins in the off chance that some vagabond demon or whats it would come along and mess the place up. Cleaning up after spoiled otherworldly creatures wasn't as fun as she wished her life to be.

But a few days ago she had caught word of something happening in the far east. Well now, far be it from her to avoid helping someone in need. That, and she was bored out of her skull and in dire need of excitement. Sort of like killing two birds with one stone, this little venture was. Finally though she had arrived, it had taken longer than her travels usually did on account of her having traveled by foot. The tunnels this fight was to occur within was a highly unsuitable place for a wolf and a fire steed. It didn't take much convincing to get someone to give her directions here. It seemed they needed all the help they could get. Arcaine made short work of her exploration of the tunnels, before catching the sound of heavy footfalls, the scent of ash and blood, and the flame's heat. Time for a show then, she thought as she broke into a run down the corridor.

Her sword was drawn, resting at her side as its blade rolled with deep red fire. The fire too had appeared in her opposite hand, white hot and dropping embers to the rocky floor. She caught a motion, and the earth shook as a dwarf came fleeing down the tunnel, close at his heels was the massive beast she'd heard tale of. "Hey you, duck!" She called out to the man, throwing a handful of fire at the metal hide of the beast, the fire soared over the man's head and hit the monster square in the jaw.

A blast of fire flew over Haldor and struck the beast. His savior was a human child with a dark auburn hair and teal eyes. Human sure were scary creatures, so young yet so powerful. Haldor was glad that such reinforcements had come, without her help the beast would have most likely caught up with him. But such thoughts were best left for later, when the adventure was over, because at the moment they had a monster to slay.

He Iron Rhino’s jaw caught fire and the beast flailed as it struggled to put out the flames. Haldor’s eyes focused on the creature, the time to strike was now, while it was damaged from the fire. Swords and axes had no affect previously, now they would most likely have the same effect, but Haldor concentrated and searched for a weak point. When the beast raised its arms to beat the flames on its head, Haldor noticed that the skin on its arms had a different hue than the rest of his body. Perhaps they were not reinforced by the same layer of iron that protected most of the beast.

Haldor was about to charge with his cinquedea, but stopped when he saw that the beast had already put out the flames. Its eyes burned with anger, its claws were held ready, able to strike at any moment, and heat gathered in its powerful jaw. The fight was just starting and the previous attack had enraged the creature.

“Normal swords won’t work on it!” warned Haldor before jumping away from the creature, as a powerful claw sent rocks flying into the spot he had been standing. The creature pulled back its head and lunged forward, sending a powerful ball of flames towards the pair. There was no where for Haldor to hide and he had no attack that could repel the magic, so instead he braced himself with his tiny arms and waited, trusting that the stranger would step up and save him once more.

"Good thing I don't have a normal sword then." Her reply was to the man but her attentions were on the fierce creature looming just above. Eh, I've fought bigger. She thought, as she studied the beast. It swiped down with a heavy paw? hand? whatever, it had claws. Rocks flew, dangerous shards enough to cut one in pieces, she had no doubt. Ducking low she evaded a particularly large chunk of rock before summoning up another wave of fire to launch at the creature. It sure didn't like that fire, which made her even more glad that she had come. Arcaine did so love her fire wielding, she was practically born for wielding the element.

Abruptly the beast let out a massive wave of fire, it was a blaze that would surely swallow lesser men whole. But Arcaine had quite a few tricks of her own, as she stepped forward into the blade, drawing her sword up she slashed in the direction of the beast, sending its own fire back at it. Bringing her sword sown again she glanced back at the short man, making sure he was still in one piece. "How you holdin up, there?"

Using her sword in combination with her fire, she overpowered the scorching sphere of flame and sent it reeling towards the beast. The Iron Rhino took the full blast of the attack and fell over its back, lunging and trusting and the powerful flames consumed its body. The beast rolled, lunged and roared as it battled to put out the flames.

Haldor was most impressed by her display of power. She didn't look much different from any normal human, yet this stranger with the teal eyes and auburn hair was far stronger than the average warrior. Haldor had no doubt that she could take down this beast by herself, but the dwarven pride would never allow him to be saved without even trying to partake in the battle.

When the beast put out the flames and began to get up, Haldor charged towards it and jumped over its metal chest. He swung his cinquedea quickly slashing the shoulders and arms. The flailed and screamed, his pain echoed throughout the dark tunnels, filling everyone with a sense of dread. Haldor jumped back and regrouped with the human.

"I'll be just fine. Let's finish our business here!"

She smiled. Ah, at least the guy wasn't burnt to a crisp already. It'd make for a sad evening indeed then. But of course the protector had no intention of letting any thing of the sort occur. She wouldn't let any more lives be lost by the vicious beastie. Her sword brought back around to her side, Arcaine summoned forth another handful of fire. "Alright then, glad I don't just have to watch out for ye." She said with a brief laugh as the dwarf returned to her side. It was some relief hat he wasn't just here to play guard duty, a fighting companion made for a more thrilling venture, that was for certain.

With room to spare, she hurled the fire back to the creature's face, this time rushing in with her sword to follow the blow. Her fired blade drew swiftly across the beasts exposed under belly as it reared up to swipe more flame from its maw.

Flames shot out from the creatures wound. The fire welling up inside it tore the skin and erupted in small streams of orange and red. When the lightshow was over, the beast toppled on the rocky ground once more. It was barely alive, struggling to grasp to any small slimmer of life left. Haldor however couldn’t let the creature survive. He dashed past the human and jumped. And then he dove down with the cinquedea and struck its head.

The fire had weakened the metal hide and the long dagger pierced through. The heat from the creature licked Haldor’s skin, but he overcame it. He jumped down and stared at the fallen monster, feeling mighty proud of himself for delivering the final blow. However before he could wipe away his grin, the beast shot up and brought its jaw towards the dwarf. To his back was a rock wall and there was no time to roll away. He placed the cinquedea before him and did his best to protect himself, knowing that his dagger wouldn’t shield the attack at all.

The young protector stepped back, bringing her sword about to guard as she awaited the fall of the beast. Not to say that she expected it to be finished off so quickly, but they were in a cave and she wouldn't want to risk causing the whole thing to fall in around them just because she'd used excessive power. Arcaine halted just short of the creature, her blade raised as she prepared to strike again. This time however the dwarf was quicker, and he swiftly moved in to deal the finishing blow.

As the earth shook from the beast's fall, she lowered her blade to her side before striding over to it and giving it a nudge with one boot. She thought she saw it spasm, but attributed it just to some death twitch. Just as she was about to open her mouth to speak the creature suddenly reared up, its jaws giving a wide swing across to deal a final blow before dying. She moved forward quickly, bringing her blade about once more to pierce through the side of beast's skull. Twisting the blade about to lock the monster's jaw. It would have seemed an expert move. Too bad it was only dumb luck that prevented the steel monstrosity's fangs from falling shut.
