The swordsman stood tall at the bow of the small ship. He had gotten bored with the inactivity on the mainland as of late. There was very little to do, wandering from place to place, looking for action of some kind. As a result, he made his way to the shores, eventually ending up in the Port of Avalon. He found a small merchant ship there that was getting ready to make its way out for a short trip to one of the outlying islands to do trade. They were in desperate need of some extra protection, due to the attacks that monsters and other sea creatures tended to make on small vessels. He deemed it a fine opportunity to both take in some adventure and make some cash at the same time. A perfect fit.

They had just pushed off from the docks about an hour ago, but already the mainland was starting to grow small in the distance. He looked back out toward the front of the ship once more, reveling in the fresh salty air of the sea. The wind was playing through his already slightly ruffled hair, making his black locks wave lightly with the breeze. It was nice being away from land once more, doing something different. He began to wonder how it could be that problems might arise on such a little trip as the one they were making. After a while he dismissed those thoughts, realizing that inevitably bad things can happen anywhere, and the merchants must know about such happenings, or else they wouldn't have hired him and the few other people they had to defend the ship in the event of attack.

Stirring about the ship, mending riggings and tending to oars, Lear was glad to be out at sea once again. He had been hired to captain a small vessel heading to one of the smaller vessles... It was so small that the owner had not even bothered to give it a name... "Hey now! Watch that rope!" He jumped in time to rap one of the novice seagoers on the head with his nuckels and retie a rope that was at the wrong rig.
It was not to long before they were out to sea... Along with them was a ronin of sorts, apparently the ship owners thought that Learghaoth couldn't keep the ship in safe waters... "Old wives tales..." he said as he came to stand next to the swordsman... "But glad for some company, even if yer a land fellow..." He had been told to treat the man nicely as he was in the direct employ of the merchant... Guess that means I am not generous without being told... he mused to himself as he barked a command to one of the lesser saliors... "Enjoying the farin'?" he muttered trying to make his generosity sound forced like his own captain tended to... kept people off balance.

As the young pilot and appointed captain of the ship stepped forward to join him, the swordsman looked him over out of the corner of his eye. The young man was somewhat similar to himself, in some aspects. Dark hair, eyes a shade of green, just a couple inches shorter than himself, and naturally tanned skin. He seemed very confident in himself, a trait the ronin liked to see in people. It showed that a person knew what they were doing and what they were capable of. It also was a mark of pride, which he felt that one must have if one was to make a name for himself in the world.

As he spoke, the dark-haired katana-bearer turned himself a little in his direction, with his hands sitting tucked into the white sash about his waist. "Indeed I am, my friend. It's good to be out on the sea once more. Old wives' tales, eh? Well I don't know about all that, but if they're willing to part with a little gold and chuck it my way for this little 'service', then I'm not gonna argue." He chuckled a little, figuring the seafarer would enjoy a little humor of that sort. Then he held out his hand to the young man in a token of comraderie and friendship, ready with a firm grip. "My name is Jade Lorien, friend. They say a ship with no name is bad luck, though. What say you to that?"

Taking the man's hand the boy, for truely that was all Lear was when people tended to think of him looked the warrior over. His grip was firm and strong after years of tending oars and ropes... At the man's question, the lad gave a barking laugh... "Another tale for mother's to scer the' children away from sea... A ship is only as lucky as 'er capin is willing to stear 'er straight you see?"
Lear looked over the sea and turned to glance now and then making sure orders were being followed... His first mate, not like he needed one, came up to him and handed him a map... "What do I loo' like a land love'r? Go put that away, I knows where I'm agoin!" Rolling his eyes he barked for the ship to be turned a bit westward to catch the wind, lightening the load of the few oarsman on the small craft.

Jade laughed again at the confidence inherent in the young man's attitude. He knew he was going to like this one, by the way he carried himself and responded to Jade's comments. He turned to watch as the young man shouted orders to the crew in order to catch the wind in the sails. Nodding his head in satisfaction, he turned back to face the sea once more. After a while, he suddenly realized that the young captain had not introduced himself to the samurai, so he turned back to the ship.

Looking around for a moment, he spotted the man toward the starboard side conversing briefly with one of the merchants that had hired them. Jade made his way over to them casually, trying to time it so that he would draw up close just as the merchant left. He ended up getting it perfectly, as the older merchant turned and walked toward the cabin area just as Jade came within a couple of paces. "You know, my friend. I just realized that I didn't get your name before. Would you care to share it with me?"

Lear glanced over his shoulder... The ronin had walked over after the boy had finished his talk with their employer. When asked his name the lad gave another hearty laugh... "Aye, you never caught it beca' I never swam to the net..." He slapped the man's shoulders and walked off to tend to another rigging... The boy wasn't being rude, he just never tended to give about his name at random...
The rigging done, the boy posted himself back upon the stern of the deck... Watching the currents, waiting to see if there might be any bumps in his route... The smell of a storm was lingering on the air, but the lad couldn't quite place it... The ship turned as ordered and caught the sail full in the wind, speeding them towards their destination...
Disaster was bound to happen.

The young man was definitely a son of the sea. He obviously didn't care to get too involved with others until it was necessary that he do so. Smart way to handle one's business, he supposed, especially when one's business involves something as uncertain as the deep blue ocean. Jade watched as once again the boy walked away from him to tend to his duties as the ship captain, overseeing the handling of the equipment and making sure they stayed the course well.

When the young captain reached the ship's stern, the swordsman turned back to the bow of the ship to watch the ocean ahead of them. A moment later, the ship took on a light burst of speed as the wind hit the sails full on, filling them to the max. The ronin looked far out on the waters. He wasn't a seafarer, but he was pretty good at being able to figure out the weather. There was the very faintest of dark clouds far off on the horizon, in the direction in which they were heading. He wondered if the captain was aware that he was sending them into the path of a storm, then decided that the young man seemed to know what he was about. He stood leaning into the wind that had been created by their speed.

Learghaoth sighed and shook his head... This was going to be a big one, but more then like not too big that it should cause them much trouble... That was the thought until the first swell lifted up the ship, causing it to literaly fly for a moment before another wave carried under it and brought it back down... "The sail! Get down the damned sail!" the boy cried, himself running to climb up and undo the ropes... They could live without the sail, but fateful as it was the sky darkened and swirled, and as sudden as the sea's temper could stir it was upon them... "Damn it all to 'el!" Taking a dagger from one of the crew he just cut the sail free and watched it fall off the mast into the sea... Himself nearly blown off with it... The wind was now a foe as it was spinning about them... Learghaoth lived for this sort of thing... But it also made things apparent that he as likely the onlly experianced seagoer on the ship... Men were ducking and hiding, rather then running to tend ropes or pull in oars... Lear was seen all over the ship doing so, obviously knowing what was what and how to use it... but what he hadn't relized is how close the ship had been to one of the outpost islands... an abandoned one for all the trouble it was worth... ANd very soon the ship slammed into rocks and sent everything that wasn't tied down flying either into the waves to die or onto the sand with such force that would render the most hard headed sheep herder unconcious. The first time Learghaoth had ever captained a crashing ship... he himself sprawled out on the beach, the broken mast lieing on top of his inert form.

The storm came upon them with very little warning. The darkened sky descended upon the small ship in all its fury, rain crashing down upon the deck and wind howling through the sky, beating at the sails. Jade could do little other than hold on to something sturdy for dear life, him knowing very little of the ways of sailing and what to do on a ship. As he looked around, he could see that a good many of the supposed sailors on board were running around in a panic, obviously having had little or no experience in a crisis situation. He saw the young captain running around trying to take care of everything on his own, and decided he was going to make his way over to help him in any way he could. Suddenly there was a sickening crunch noise as the hull crashed into the rocks of an island, rending the ship completely. Men were tossed randomly from the decks, many of them ending up in the sea, where they would meet their fate upon the face of the huge rocks.

Jade was extremely lucky. He had been at the forward end when the crash occurred, and was thrown clear to the sands of the beach. His luck was even greater than that of most of the others, it seemed, as he landed in the soft sand above the tideline. It took him a moment to shake off the dazing effects of his landing, then he started looking about for survivors.

He saw the captain down low on the beach, trapped underneath the mast, which had snapped clean off of the deck during the crash. He was below the tideline, and the samurai knew that once the waters started to rise he would be a dead man. Jade ran over to him, his mind racing, wondering what he could do to help.

Looking around, he saw a few sailors and a couple merchants that had survived, but they were in no fit shape to help him. He was going to have to do this solo. Suddenly he came up with an idea. He dug out a little of the sand beneath the young man's legs, allowing them to fall further down into the sands. He then moved to the end of the mast, grabbing it with both hands. He exerted all of his might, lifting it just enough to clear the captain's body, and moved to his right a couple of paces. He left it down over his legs, but since they were in a little hollow, they weren't trapped by the mast. He ran over and picked the man up, carrying him up the beach where it was safe. He then fell to the sands, utterly exhausted.

Learghaoth did not even feel himself dragged about the beach, nor did he notice as one of the merchants cried about all their lost wares... He didn't hear or notice much of anything by the time he finally opened his eyes... He knew who saved him, there was only one person aboard who had the sense to... That ronin...
"S...So... How bad is it?" He asked slowly hunching up to lean on an elbow... His whole body ached, but the blessing of the sea decided to leave him unbroken if not unmanned, he knew withen a few minets of rest he would be up and about berating the survivors for not tending to the ropes to get the sail down sooner... That damn sail would have had them there by night fall, but instead the God of the Seas decided to test the young man's paitence with the land loving bafoons he was supposed to call his crew... "How the..." he coughed, but was glad to see it was only a bit of seawater and not blood... That he could take, but he could not handle seeing blood right now... Which means he totally avoided the razor rocks that the ship had crashed into... This is what he gets for not demanding at least a few experianced sailors to go aboard with him...

Jade was sitting on the sand resting as the rain beat down over the beach, soaking anything and anyone that hadn't been tossed in the drink. It felt good, though, cooling him off after his exertions just now. He removed his katana and traveling bag from behind him and placed them on the ground, sitting back against a heap of sand to make himself more comfortable.

As he was moving around, he heard the young man mumbling next to him. He was able to make out a question from what he heard, and answered him as best he could. "It's scuttled. Without the right tools and material, there's absolutely no chance we can refloat the ship. Besides that, it's completely lodged into the tall rocks over there." He waved his left hand in the direction of the rocks and the ship as he spoke. The trip had turned from a profitable trading excursion to one of survival, within a few moments.

After the few minets of predicted rest the lad was up on his feet and striding up and down the beach, giving each of the greenboys a good talk about tending ropes when they were supposed to... What the real purpose was, the one that only his eyes gave away, he wanted to know just how many names he would be praying for this night... To many, that is always the answer... Even if a man had only broken a leg it would have been to many... All because of a damn sail and a pressing scheadule set by land lovers... He did mutter a thanks for the unsettling answer to his question though...

Jade watched as the young man stood, a sad light in his eyes. The swordsman could fairly well guess what it was that was on the mind of the young captain, having had somewhat similar experiences in the past. He knew it would be better than to press the issue, so he sat idly by as the man made the rounds of the sailors. He realized then that he would be lucky to receive compensation for his time and services, seeing as three of the five merchants they had set out with were now either a part of the rocks or floating at sea somewhere. The two remaining ones would be hard-pressed to recoup the losses they had surely endured.

He turned his thoughts away from that path, deciding that it would be better for him to focus himself on the problems at hand. Once the captain got back, they would have to see what could be done about food and shelter for the group of survivors. He would ask for a count of the remaining sailors once the captain returned. They would also have to find out something about the island they had landed on, whether it was inhabited at all and if there were any dangers to be aware of. He sat back and closed his eyes, awaiting the return of the young man.

Learghaoth finished his beratment and set the crew to do some retrival of any scraps that might be used... Returning to the ronin he plopped down in the sand, ignoring the roaring pain that shot through his body... The sea was a crule bitch of a mistress and people only got what they deserved on her territory... "We'll aft' raft out, I am sending the ol' mercheis first with some of the wounded down to one of them outposts over north... Waters are calm 'ow so theyn should be fine..." Learghaoth said his peace and laid back until there was a rather large pile of the wreakage brought to shore... Even some men were hauled out of the sea, making the death toll drop from thirty to twenty three or so... The young captain was up again and seperating wood and the like to start making the rafts... It was apparant that there was no way this material would make enough for everyone...

Jade nodded at the solution the young captain had made. It was the only reasonable course of action, after all. The swordsman watched him get up to start gathering some of the driftwood, then stood up to lend a hand. There wasn't a whole lot coming in, though. The ship was still lodged into the rocks, and only the wood from the hull had been broken off into the water. They would either have to find some way to get wood from the island, or make their way over the dangerous rocks and find a way to get more wood from the ship. Jade sincerely hoped that it was the former, though.

((What's his damn name!?!?!))
