The Land of Avalon ~Newcomer’s guide.

Hello new people and welcome to Avalon!

What is Avalon/Roleplay?
Avalon is a role play site set in the medieval era. Role play is essentially a game (well, not exactly, but it can be thought of as a game) where you create your own character, and control your character to interact with other characters (usually belonging to other people).

On this RP forum, the role playing is done in the form of creative writing posts. The usual process is that someone creates a topic, and you can enter it by responding to whatever that person writes in their part of the story. You can respond in any way you want, AS LONG as it’s not explicit, overpowering (ie. Do not powerplay or godmode –see role play terms in the FAQ), too ridiculous, or breaks any of the forum’s rules etc. If you’re still in doubt as how role playing works, it’s always good to look at a few examples! Such examples can be found anywhere in the role play boards, and each role play is marked by a separate topic (otherwise know as a thread). However, if you’re still in doubt or are too lazy to find them, some direct link to example role-plays can be found here, >here<, and here.

As you can see, role-players can vary in skill, as can the complexity and/or length of their posts. Grammatical accuracy and correct spelling is much preferred, however it is not essential that your use of language is perfect. You will not get formally warned if your grammar/spelling is incorrect, however this does not mean that you should not make an effort. If you are not confident in your writing abilities, do not worry ^_^ there’s always room for improvement, and from my experiences, almost everyone who becomes actively involved in roleplaying improves after a short time.

Starting
The obvious first thing to do is to go and read the rules. After that, the first thing you need to do before your start is post a character description in the Description Page. There you post you’re characters name, age, race, appearance, personality, history etc. (for a description guide, click here). After you’re done, it is advisable to create a link to your character’s description in your signature (see Signatures/Avatars/PM’s below)

Also, be sure to check out the rules to make sure you don’t end up getting warned for something you accidentally missed!

After that you may start role-playing. To role-play, you can go to any of the boards, the Lands of the North, South, West, the Castle of Avalon …etc but remember to check the word limit. The word limits are as follows;

IC (Roleplaying Forums)
*Northern Lands - 50 word limit.
*Eastern Lands ~ Isle Of Fincayra - 50 word limit.
*Isle of Gramarye - 50 word limit.
*Southern Lands - 150 word limit.
*Western Lands - 350 word limit.
*Waters of Avalon/Sea/Oceans - 150 word limit, in character most areas inaccessible by foot.
*Fight Arena - 75 word limit. (Sometimes site wide tournaments are held)
*Castle of Avalon - 50 word limit, Kingless.
*Castle of Fincayra - 50 word limit, the King of Fincayra is Calonderiel. (BlueDragon)
*Houses/Homes - 50 word limit, special forums given to those who purchase homes and land from the shops.
*Guardian Shrines - 100 word limit, home to the elemental guardians of Avalon.
*God/ess Temples - 100 word limit, home to Avalon's deities.
*Sacred Places - 100 word limit, home to the most revered and respected parts of Avalon, where gods and guardians are borne.

[Please note that anyone found posting under the word limit will be given either an informal or formal warning depending on the severity of your offense. ALSO: When role-playing, ONLY write in-character posts…do not reply in a role-play JUST to tell the other person something out-of-character related (it’s acceptable if you put an Out of Character note somewhere in an In-Character post, but that’s all). Contact the person via the PM system instead, which can be found under inbox => compose message.]

To start up a Role-play, chose your area (located within each RP forum) and click the “new topic” button. Then give your Role-play a title, and write until your heart’s content! Then click the “post new topic” button, and wait until someone replies! ^^.

Alternatively, if you see a role-play that you wish to enter, just click the “reply” button and make a reply to it. However, be careful not to interrupt any private role-plays, or role-plays which have already gone on for a considerable amount of posts/time, as it may be annoying to the people who were in the role-play originally If you see a [P] or a ‘private’ or “[someone] only” under or beside the topic’s name, then it usually means that the topic is private and you should not enter it.

Signatures/Avatars/PM’s

You will find the controls for all of this when you click the Preferences button near the top on the right hand side.

Avatars
An avatar is a picture that usually represents your character (though it doesn’t have to). You can see your avatar on any of your posts, on the left hand side of your post. To change your avatar, click on the “change avatar” link on the menu in your control panel, and either upload a picture from your computer (no more than 25kb) or put in a link to an existing picture.

Signatures
Your signature comes after your post, and should contain a link to both your character's description and inventory (along with other material of your choice). Basically your signature is yours to personalise, and can contain whatever you want so long as it's not offensive not violates any rules. Pictures in your signature should not be too large, as not only will it take a long time to load on some people’s computers, but it will also look clumsy and/or distort the size of the forum. If a picture in your signature (or the signature in whole) is deemed too large, you will be PMed and ask to have it adjusted (failure to comply will most likely result in the picture/signature being removed).
If you feel as if your signature looks a little drab or you just simply can’t be bothered to make it appealing, you can go visit >Sir’s signature repair shop< and get your signature tidied up and decorated for free :D.

PMs
A PM is a personal message you can send to any member on Avalon. To compose a message you click on Compose New Message link, which can be found in your control panel menu. Do not harass members via PM, if someone is harassing you then forward the PM to an online admin.

Custom titles
Right under your avatar is a thing called a custom title. It will change by default as your gold increases, but if you want you get go to your control panel and edit it in the “edit profile” section. However, you can only edit your custom title once you have at least one post.

Warnings
If you disobey the rules, or do something that goes against the site’s policies, you will more than likely earn yourself a warning. Five warnings, and you get suspended from the site for a week. Five more warnings, then it’s a ban. The amount of warns you have are kept track of in the bar underneath your avatar.
Things that can land you a warn include: Godmoding, powerplaying, harassing other members, posting under the world limit, etc. Keep in mind that an admin can ban you instantly if they deem an offense serious enough, however these are generally very rare cases. In other words, follow the rules and be nice and you shouldn't have to worry about being warned/banned. ^_~

Shops
Shops are where you can buy items for your character. For every post you make you get 5 gold (except on Out-of-Character [or OOC] boards, where you get no gold). You will need to go to the shops and see how much your item will cost. You need to have at least that much money to buy it. All you have to do is reply to the shop Topic and post what you want and the Moderators and Admin will sort it out as quickly as possible. DO NOT put an item in your signature or inventory without paying for it this is certain to get you at least a warning or a suspension.

Items
If you have not bought an item, you cannot say you have it (this rule does NOT apply for certain necessities of course, such as clothing)…eg, you cannot say your character has a sword in a RP if it is not in your inventory. Usually, once an item is bought, it is placed in your signature. It’s then up to you what to do with it, just make sure there is some indication that you have actually bought the item so you don’t get warned accidentally. Usually people create an inventory in the >inventory description< board, and then place a link to it in their signatures.

In Conclusion
Abide by these rules and you will get along fine and you will enjoy yourself, if you chose to disobey these rules then you will not get along fine and you won’t enjoy yourself. If you have any questions that have not been dealt with in this then feel free to PM an admin or a moderator.
