Dead Trees.... OPEN; Because they're dead, that's why

Walking for miles and miles and seeing nothing was by far the most boring thing in the world, especially for someone who is used to action at every turn, whether it be a guard or a thief. The sun beating down mercilessly from above made things no better. The woman with the red hair and glasses walked along this land, the ground crumbling and crunching at her feet's touch. It was such an empty space, though this is where the vortex that Nim had created had brought her.

Nim was an alchemist. Nim was a paladin, a baker, a wanderer and a lunatic.... if you could call her all that in one breath. Most simply called her "Nim" and that was good enough, for her name spelled it all out nicely. In her previous world she had found a magic mirror, and to her surprise, wonder, horror and astonishment it had teleported her here. She had no idea where she was, only that this place was much, much different from her home. Pushing her glasses farther up her nose, Nim also ran a hand through the sweaty tangle of curls that was her crown. She squinted and peered at the distance, then saw something black and spikey sticking up from the horizon. Brightening some as much as the disheartened woman could, she walked toward it.

A tree. A dead tree with limbs like toothpicks, picked clean by desperate creatures who had once traveled here. A small laugh broke the silence but died under the weight of it, crushed like the life that may have once lived here. There was nothing funny here at the moment. She looked about then walked closer to the tree, pressing her palm against the blackened wood. Little shade here, less clouds. Once it got dark the temperature would drop. Nim knew she needed to do something, and quickly. A grim expression set her face as she moved so the tree was between her and the sun, then turned her back to it and leaned against it. Something needed to be done, she thought again as she surveyed the desolate land.

Hyacinth lay stretched out on the ground underneath one of the trees, if such things could still be called trees, looking up at the empty skies. The bony figures more resembled upright sticks that had been stretched out until they were the size of trees, then left to blacken in the sun. The wood would burn in mere seconds, it was not even worthy of being called fuel anymore. She sighed a brief sigh to herself, the desolation here meant nothing to her. Her heart felt no pain or sorrow looking at the empty place that mirrored her own soul.

She had been here for several days now, unable to sleep with every cold night that came upon the deathly place. Her eyes were bloodshot, her short white hair slightly unkempt, and her clothes wrinkled. But her face showed no sign of sorrow, only the deep numbness that came with much grief. She had finally reached a point where she could no longer cry, yet the past still haunted every step she took towards the future. She had contemplated the idea of staying in the same spot for the remainder of her life, even though she knew she would eventually tire of it, as she had tired of all those other places she had been to. Yet this was the longest she had ever stayed in one place, gazing at the sky, where every moment of her past projected itself, like a portrait of her life painted on the heavens.

Her contemplation was disrupted by the sound of a small laugh followed by the unearthly silence of the dead place. She sat up, trying to determine the source of the sound. Her eyes searched until they found a red-haired woman with glasses leaning on one of the dead trees. Hyacinth stood up and ran a hand through her white hair in an effort to look more presentable. However, she still looked like a dirty orphan with no where to go, which was very much true. "Hello." She said, silently, trying to attract the woman's attention. It would be futile to try to hide her own presence in a place so desolate as this.

Calm and thoughtful, Nim adjusted her glasses higher onto her nose and looked down the rims at the little girl before her. She was as unkempt and bedraggled as Nim, perhaps more so. There seemed to be an aura of sorrow around her, yet with a touch of something else that Nim found disturbing and difficult to grasp. She stayed leaned against the tree for a long moment more, looking the other up and down, with a fairly plain expression on her face. Quite frankly, Nim was far to weary to bother wondering if this girl was real, or just a delusion from the heat.

"Hello,"

she finally said to the girl, regardless of what thoughts lay in the recesses her mind. The uneasy silence around them all still hung like a shroud (ach cliche sorry), and the alchemist-paladin-baker-lunatic was uneasy with this. She glanced at the azhure sky for a moment, registering the heat that beat down here. She knew the girl couldn't have been out here for long, not more than a few days... may be half a week. But then again Nim had never been the best of judgers when it came to people's appearences. So silently she remained there, waiting for something to say to pop into her head. Something usually did after a while.

"It's a nice day to be out for a walk when the sky is such a pretty shade of blue. Are you all right?"

Nim said suddenly. She knew this statement was probably not at all appropriate, but it was her attempts to cheer the lonely looking girl up. It probably wouldn't work, or at least the alchemist-paladin-baker-lunatic didn't suspect it would. Her second question had been phrased as cheerfully as possible, though it looked like this girl was in need of some food and water, and shade quite soon. She bit her tongue and reminded her that she was quite possibly making a fool of herself, but then again, Nim, being a recluse, often did that in front of others, strangers especially.

((Blah blah the ending fell apart sorry about that.....))

Hyacinth looked at the woman silently, pondering the question that she had asked her. She was unsure how to answer the question, because she really didn't know how she was. Physically, she had been sleep deprived for so long that her body was weak, and she wandered tiredly from one thought to the next. She had lost her mental alertness and agility, and spent most of her days, stretched out on the ground, trying to give her body some rest. Mentally she was slow and detached, trying to avoid the dangers of the road. Emotionally . . . her emotions had at last left her, she was thankful for the numbness after her grief. She knew that her appearance was pathetic and weak. Were she not in such a desolate place, she would be an easy target for thieves, murderers, and whatever deadly creatures inhabited the dark nights.

She glanced up at the sky, observing the woman's comment. For all the hours she had been staring at that same sky, she had never noticed its color. It was peaceful, calming, but those thoughts had never occurred to her before. At that, Hyacinth came to the realization that she was not all right after all. Her body and mind were sick. More wandering would lead her to her own death and destruction, but she felt powerless against her own emotional numbness and the apathy that came with it.

Yet, these were not the words that came out of her mouth. Hyacinth found herself suprised at her own actions and words. She nodded her head in response to the woman's question. "I'm alright." She said. She wondered if the woman realized that what she was saying was not true at all. Her own physical appearance was enough to establish doubt towards her answer. "What brings you to this place?" She asked. The woman's cheerful tone had seemed so out of place in the desolate environment, and yet she looked as unkempt as Hyacinth. Perhaps she was trying to make the best out of the deathlike place they both seemed to be in for no reasons but their own, however strange they were.
