Travelling at night had never been something she had been fond of and in truth she had no idea why she bothered, it would have been only too simple for her to set up a small campfire and sleep for the night. It may not have been considered safe in such an area but the night shrouded much including herself from the view of bandits or other unwanted attention. She supposed sleep was the main problem these days, tiredness affected her but after the loss of her companion her dreams were constantly haunted with visions of him. Eventually she had to succumb to such horrors but she at least tried to push them away for as long as she could, even if it did often mean that she simply collapsed in a chair in a tavern or against a tree suddenly.

Stopping suddenly, the quiet clanking of her worn leaf green armour ceased as she slowly turned around to look in the direction she had previous come from, her torch only providing a brief amount of illuminate in the vicinity. The sound of hooves closing on her location instantly became apparent along with the wooden clatter of wheels bouncing over stones as she looked onward; the darkness and the trees hiding whatever came towards her. Her free hand moved down to grip the hilt of her short sword, knowing that it would pay to be prepared if this was anybody who would likely do her harm. The thought that this actually sounded like a cart did occur to her and thus, from her own knowledge she assumed that a cart and horses normally meant travellers or some sort, especially since commoners such as herself couldn’t afford such necessities.

The shadows of the horses and the carts were the first shapes that could be made out by her eyes though still they were a reasonable distance away from her. Not instantly realising that she was directly in the centre of the path with a bright torch, clearly giving her exact location away, not to mention that the horses and the cart could easily run her down if they so desired. Thankfully, as the cart drew into her range the horses were seemingly pulled to a stop and the carted skidded to a halt behind them a few meters away from her. Remaining stationary in the middle of the road, Reilley stared onwards at the shadows, wondering who would be travelling at such a ridiculous time in the middle of the night.

Their skin shone bright in the moonlight, revealing perfect complexions, void of bruises, cuts or scars. Their eyes, while different in shape and depth, were all the same bright, crimson red, a perfect contrast to the snow-white of their hair.

Salem watched carefully, studiously, as one by one they filed out of her former home and into the night. Clad in matching red cloaks with black embroidery, they looked a miniature army, stepping rhythmically in single file.

Each bowed or curtsied as they passed her, careful not to anger the queen. They each had seen her only once before, when they were bitten and brought to the hall to begin their transformations, but they all knew exactly who she was: their queen, and mother.

Lily, the oldest and strongest of them, stood at her side, inspecting the line of undead children as they passed. Herself not a day over fifteen, but so much older in spirit. "I trust they're to your liking, your majesty?" she asked quietly, staring straight ahead, her body stiff as statue.

"Yes, they'll do nicely," Salem replied casually, almost bored. They looked identical to the last batch of acolytes: children in appearance, with the strength of five men, at least, and a thirst for blood.

Turning away, Salem started for their procession: a line of inky black carriages silhouetted against the night sky, pulled by pale gray horses with lifeless eyes. "I expect to be on our way within the hour," she continued, ready to return to her throne.

Before long they were on their way, trudging through the city streets as quiet and unassuming as a specter: better to attract no attention, remain silent and slip through the cracks.

That was exactly what the queen had planned to do, until her procession was pulled abruptly to a halt, accompanied by the ethereal, echoing neighs of her demon-steeds.

"Why have we stopped?" she demanded of Lily, shooting a concerned glance out of her window. Fearless, as always, before her assistant could respond, Salem had stepped out of the carriage and onto the cobblestones of the street below, ignoring Lily's pleas to remain inside.

Her steps clicked sharply against the stones as she walked towards the head of the procession, her bloody gaze trained on the woman ahead, seemingly stopped in her tracks by the horses. The driver hopped down from his perch, pleading with her to allow him to address the issue, but Salem wouldn't listen. "What on earth is a girl like you doing out all alone in the middle of the night?" she asked, her dark lips curling into a sinister smirk as she drew closer to the woman.

The elf stood there in the darkness as the she looked on at the carriage that had stopped in front of her, the torch she held up in front of her reflecting brightly on the green armour she wore, making the colour look more emerald than leaf green. A voice rang out from inside the carriage though it was too far away to make anything out; the driver himself seemed to jump up however at the sound of the voice and instantly dashed from his perch. He stopped as a feminine figure emerged from the caravan, seemingly ignoring him as she moved forward towards her.

The female grew closer to her as she walked forward, the light from her torch suddenly illuminating her as she came within range. A crimson red dress was the first feature that the half elf made out; her eyes seemingly looking the woman up and down as she emerged from the darkness. Her gaze stopped on the woman’s peculiar red eyes, the glint of the torch reflecting in them as she stared on at her, holding her in an imaginary grasps. Tearing her gaze away, Reilley looked at her blankly, unsure what to think of this strange meeting.

“Girl?” Reilley spoke the sole word in question coldly, in response to what the woman said, a hint of bitterness creeping into her voice. If there was one thing Reilley disliked, it was being spoken to in such a condescending voice tone, especially when she was not only older by the looks of it but likely more experienced in just about every situation. By the looks of the woman, she was young and probably part of some royal family. Of course royalty didn’t often travel at night, especially those who were of utmost importance so Reilley assumed that this woman was the runt of some royal litter.

“I think you’ll find I have as much right as you to be out on such a night. Now if it pleases you, please take your cart around me and go on with your business.” She finished but remained still, her free hand lingering near the short sword at her waist.

Inspecting the girl more closely, Salem took a moment to note the details: the black hair, brown eyes, the green sheen of her armor, and the (very small) points of her ears (a half breed, she was sure) and how her hand hovered close to the sword at her waist.

At her retort, Salem could only smile, her grin spreading wider with every word the girl uttered, until eventually, she responded with a sinister laugh, showing off bright, white fangs. Stepping closer, the vampiress stopped only when she was within a foot of the elf, fearless as always, even as she stared up at the wretched girl. Yes, girl as Salem was certain that she, even with elf's blood, had seen perhaps a single century, at most.

"Oh, but my dear...," she began, leaning in dangerously close, "You should know to fear what lurks in the dark," she snapped her fangs loudly as one black-nailed hand raised to grip her about the throat, lifting the girl off her feet. "Tell me, child, were you planning to die tonight?" But even as she asked, Salem felt something... off, in her veins. Her blood was normal enough but there was something there she didn't recognize.

An icy cold shiver travelled down her spine as she looked on at the crimson eyes women, her horrific smile seeming to widen as Reilley spoke before finally a cold laugh escaped her, revealing the white teeth in her mouth, or rather the fangs as they appeared. Although the young half elf didn’t quite understand exactly what this being was, she knew that something was instantly wrong. She stepped closer and although Reilley wished to retreat and perhaps escape from the horrific gaze of this woman, she stood her ground, her hand finally clenching around the hilt of her short sword. Stopping only a foot or so away from her, the young warrior stared on at her, meeting her gaze yet again though this time not being quite so fortunate to have an easy escape route.

Reilley’s eyes widened in shock as the woman leaned in close and spoke, a cold, sickening shiver travelling down her spine yet again as she began to doubt her initial thoughts about this woman. Before she could even consider her options, a loud clicking sound could be heard and then a hand suddenly wrapped around her throat. Incredible strength seemed to radiate from the female as the hand lifted Reilley up into the air with ease and held her there. Panicking instantly, Reilley let go of the torch she held allowing it to fall to the ground with a smouldering thud; reaching up with both of her hands, she wrapped them around the females as best as she could and attempted to peel them from her throat. Coughing as she did so, she puffed the air as best as she could and flailed with her legs, the sudden attack having caught her completely off guard.

The woman’s voice echoed in her ears as spoke, her question feeling like a knife being stabbed into her gut. Realising her face was beginning to pale as she struggled to continue breathing, Reilley dropped one of her hands to her belt and attempted to draw the short sword. There was but one hope for her, impale the strange being on the end of her sword and hope that she could do enough damage for the woman to let go before she inevitably choked to death.

"What do you want?" She wheezed and puffed as she fumbled with the hilt of her sword, finally managing to pull it from it's sheath.

The queen never would grow tired of seeing that fear as it sept into her lesser's eyes. She could see it now, feel it radiating off of the elf as she dropped her torch.

What did she want? Truthfully, Salem wasn't sure of her answer at that moment. Blood? Yes, she always wanted blood, and death just as badly. But this girl... there was something off about her. She was a half-elf, that much could be easily discerned, simple, proud, all those things were expected but there was something Salem couldn't quite place.

"What do I want?" Salem repeated, glancing away as she carelessly tossed the girl down onto the cobblestones after having seen her hand grip her sword. She certainly didn't need to be stabbed this evening, not in this dress.

Worried not over the sword in the girl's hand, Salem loomed over her in the darkness, peering down with those blood-red eyes, searching the girl for any indication- She smelled mortal, like a half-breed, a naive little girl with incomplete knowledge of the world. But there was something else- something familiar- in her scent, in the pulse of her veins that Salem had encountered before...

The queen cocked her head to one side, much like a curious cat, staring at the elf as, finally, she realized what it was: this girl was a follower of light. All at once, a delighted, dark grin stretched across her lips.

Having no intention of answering her question (yet), Salem instead stepped closer, a dark silhouette against the night sky, and asked, "Do you know who I am?" Truthfully it wouldn't matter one way or another, but it would certainly prove a point. Perhaps this elf could be useful to her yet.

Reilley had only a brief moment to hear the female repeat the question she had asked before she was casually tossed back. She landed awkwardly on cobbled floor on her back and instantly winced as her arm that had been clutching the sword jarred slightly, though it wasn’t anything she couldn’t live with. Coughing and spluttering as she heaved air back into her lungs, she orientated herself again before rubbing her reddened neck. Overall the attack had left her unscathed though she assumed the cobbled floor had annoyingly scratched her armour which was something she actively tried to avoid, though then again given her current state of mind, she hadn’t exactly kept it in fantastic condition like she usually did; the green metal still held the green sheen however it wasn’t freshly polished and dirt lingered on the plate boots and gauntlets.

Unsheathing the sword as the woman towered above her, which was rather ironic considering Reilley was taller than the woman, she looked up defiantly at the woman, her sword outstretched in front of her in readiness for the woman’s next attack. The same grin that she had previously had once again plastered her lips and Reilley suddenly felt doubt creep into her thoughts; the females strength had been incredible compared to her own and although she hadn’t quite fully comprehended that, she wasn’t really sure that she could do anything that would actually defeat this strange woman.

“Somebody who seems to prey on the weak or less fortunate? Some pompous noble who believes that her political power makes her superior than any other being? Yes of course I know the type of person you are.” She spoke with bitterness, almost wondering if her words would bring the female to attack again, though she half regretted ever wishing that given what had just happened.

The half-elf spat out a bitter answer, condemning Salem as an arrogant, self-serving noble, touting her political power and crushing those she believed to be below her- and the half-elf was absolutely right, except for one, small detail. The queen possess political power, yes, but it came second to her strength, speed, and cunning.

Salem laughed then, down to her core, with her hands on her hips and her shoulders pushed forward slightly, while the entirety of her small frame trembled with the act. "My dear, you couldn't imagine the extent of my power, political or otherwise," she spoke, her voice breathy from laughter. It was the habit of most to underestimate the vampiress, based solely on her stature and size- it had always served as a benefit.

"You may not know who I am, but I know who you are," she continued, straightening up with a wide grin. Her body turned to the side slightly, revealing the procession behind her, and a hand outstretched, beckoning one of her servants forward. "I can smell it on you, the stench of her holy power. You've been blessed by the guardian."

Behind the queen, one of the carriage doors open, and out stepped a young boy. He couldn't be over the age of twelve, at least physically. His eyes were bright red, matching Salem's own, but his hair was snow white, a stark contrast to her raven locks. His skin was pale and flawless, glowing in the light of the moon. He wore elegant clothing under an elaborately-embroidered red cloak. He stepped forward to stand next to her, his movements methodical and mechanical. "Your Majesty?" he asked once he was beside Salem.

Her red gaze still trained on the half-elf, Salem responded without looking at her pet, "She'll be coming with us," Salem instructed, her fangs gleaming through a wide grin, "Our new friend is going to help us get closer to the guardian of light. Bind her in chains and strap her to the last carriage. Stay with her, ensure that she remains as silent as the grave." Her errand-boy moved forward, spinning his hands to call forth arcane magic, summoning cuffs and chains from thin air and approaching the elf.

Hah, hadn’t she heard that before, a ridiculous noble woman professing the fact that nobody could comprehend the extent of their power. If Reilley hadn’t been so down in the dumps she might have actually laughed at that statement, though in truth she was unsure if this woman was even saying it for effect. How easy had it been for her to simply pick Reilley up with one hand? Far too easy, then she had merely tossed her down onto the floor without even a slight bit of discomfort.

Her eyes did however widen in shock as the woman statement that she knew exactly who she was. Her weapon wavered for a brief second, though she quickly recovered and scrambled to her feet, her sword still held outstretched in front of her in hopes that it would deter her from attacking. The second statement that the woman spoke shocked her to the core however, especially given that Reilley not only considered herself a failure in the eyes of the guardian of light, but also that to Reilley, there was no obvious way of knowing that she could have been a follower of the light.

“How could you possible know that?” Reilley’s confident stature had been shattered by the statement, though she hadn’t really had much of one to begin with given the current predicaments she was in. Allowing her gaze to briefly stray to where the woman beckoned, she watched as a child, no older than fourteen exited the carriage, wandering over to ‘his majesty’ or at least that’s what he referred to her as. Scowling slightly, Reilley stood still, rather confused at what this female was planning, though she needn’t wait long given that her next statement gave it away instantly.

“And what makes you think I’ll come willingly?” Reilley spoke, though she was truly unsure of what this female planned, especially considering the child now stood beside her. The commands that came forth to the small kid were enough to make the young half elf raise an eyebrow in surprise; what was a small kid, a fraction of her age, height and strength going to be able to do against her? Still, there was certainly something about this child that made her uneasy; the same bright red eyes that the female had were reflected on the boy’s face alongside contrasting white hair. It certainly wasn’t normal and surely nobody was born with such differing features?

A loud gasp escaped her however as he moved forward, his hands suddenly flaring with magic as chains appeared in his hands, clearly intended to bind Reilley as the woman had commanded. Unsure on what she was supposed to do, the half elf merely stood there, her sword still outstretched in from of her towards the boy, though her position wasn’t confident at all.

“I swear, come any closer and you will regret it boy.” Her voice was shaky and uncertain, especially since deep down she could never hurt a child. The guardian of light surely wouldn’t condone such actions anyway, though was she truly still a follower? She had certainly let herself down if she hadn’t let Kai down.

The vampiress crossed her arms over her chest, watching closely as the boy continued to advance, ignoring the woman's warning as though she'd not even uttered it.

"I don't know a single follower of the light who would harm a child," Salem purred gently, in that same bored tone she always carried, glancing down at one of her long black nails casually. She knew the woman would never hurt her servant - that was half of what made them so valuable. So many were afraid of hurting a child.

Meanwhile, Silas moved ever closer, having moved the chains to one hand, the other rose, palm down and fingers outstretched, as if pulling up at the earth below. Between Silas and his prey, an inky black ball of darkness formed, licking at the world around it with dark, black tendrils. They snaked out at the woman, seeking to suck the life, and light, from her, and to slowly but surely pull her closer. Just as it pulled at the elf, so too did it pull at all other organic matter around them, threatening to suck everything into the darkness.

"The darkness will kill you," Salem cooed from behind her servant, stepping closer and placing her hands on his small shoulders. "The chains may only just leave a mark on those delicate wrists... Which will you choose? Act quickly, you haven't much time." She grinned in the darkness, her fangs shining pearly white in the night.

The sliver of hope Reilley had in repelling this sudden attack was diminished in an instant as the female practically spoke her very thoughts; she gasped in surprise at the statement and looked on at the boy who came closer, the chains read to shackle her to whatever doom this woman planned for her. Forgetting about the woman for the woman, the young half elf stared directly at the boy as her weapon remained brandished in front of her, watching as he suddenly raised his free hand in front of her. A frightened gasp escaped her as a black ball of horrible magic formed up in front of her; strange tendrils of black magic came forth towards her after a moment, seeming to aim to end her pitiful life.

Weapon brandished in front of her, Reilley froze in terror at the magic, not knowing what she could possibly do to defend against such magic. Unable to will herself to move away, the black tendrils seized her, prompting a shocked and pained cry from her as she felt her very life being slowly sucked away. It was a pain Reilley had never endured in her life and it was one she wished she never had endured; her very life, souls and thoughts seemed to physically be wrenched from her very controlled by this darkness that now held her in its grasps. She struggled against it though it was no good, her grip on her weapon faded and she was slowly pulled forward towards the orb of black, and towards to boy who seemingly waited for her.

The woman’s voice echoed through Reilley’s head as she struggled, the words seemingly hitting her as she was given the two choices, both of which seeming oddly similar. Crying out in pain again, Reilley pulled back as best as she could, her eyes searching for some sort of way that she could break out of this horrific magic and escape. It was impossible though, she had no way of combatting this magic and the pain that shrieked though her body as her very life was drained away was too much for her, she couldn’t think properly and it was far too late.

“I will never betray the Guardian.” She said defiantly, her voice weak as she seemingly decided to accept the death that had been offered to her, though she assumed it would have been only too easy for the boy to step forward now and wrap his chains around her gauntleted hands, succumbing her to whatever torturous treatment they planned.

Salem clicked her tongue as the woman made her choice, opting for death over service: stupid. She shook her head, tongue clicking again. Humans, so pathetic. They'd give up everything in fear, in a stubborn unwillingness to see what the future holds.

Would she have a bright future with Salem? Absolutely not. But to choose death over the possibility... Foolish.

"Chain her," she commanded dryly, watching Silas move forward, strolling past the darkness casually to clasp her wrists in iron. Once she was bound, he snapped his fingers and in an instant, the darkness collapsed on itself, fading into the night. With the elf's chains in hand, he turned back to his queen, silent as the grave, awaiting his next command.

"To the end," Salem spoke with a grin, "Chain her to the last carriage. She'll walk until her feet bleed."

Silas nodded, then moved to stand behind the elf, nudging her forward towards the procession. Salem stood silent and still as they passed, glaring at the elf with a sinister grin. "You will betray the guardian. You won't have a choice." She laughed then, a hollow, dark sound that echoed through the streets around them, following her as she stepped back to her carriage, accepting the hand offered to help her inside.

It would be a long way to Siaraia; she was curious to see how long the elf would last.

Reilley eyes had closed tightly as the dark shadow continued to suck the very soul out of her body, her beautiful armour proving to be no match for such horrific abilities. The tightening of iron around her wrists prompted her to painfully open her eyes, the realisation that the female had commanded her servant to bind her. The snap of the boy’s fingers prompted the black orb to suddenly disappear, the painful effect of it vanishing in an instance. A loud gasp of relief escaped the young half elf before she collapsed to her knees, the strength of her legs failing her for the moment.

Gasping for breath as she relished the air that seemed to almost taste better after having felt her soul being brutally torn away, Reilley tensed her hands and applied pressure to the cuffs that were now fastened tightly around her gauntleted wrist. It took her only a brief moment to finally realise just how serious a predicament she was truly in, or rather just how serious it was that her wish to die hadn’t been granted. The woman’s voice rang out clearly as everything grew quiet, her commanding words ushering for her to be chained to the end of the last carriage. The barbaric technique the woman wanted to impose on her wasn’t surprising at all in truth, although it probably should have been coming from a stranger.

Bowing her head in shame as she passed the woman, the next words almost shattered her lingering resolve. To not only fail Kai but to eventually betray her was just too much; she had descended to the lowest depths she possibly could go but that mere thought that she would hurt the one person left in the world who probably cared for her was just beyond even the lowest places she could go.

Submitting to the humility of a boy pushing her along, Reilley’s mind wandered to her beloved weapon that had been left on the path, wondering if that would escape such a dark future if it was left behind. She didn’t turn around to find out if it was still there, though she truly hoped that her own weapon wouldn’t be used by somebody who wished ill on somebody else. Hopefully it would end up in Kai’s hands, perhaps she could make use of it, or better yet, realise what had happened to her.

Arriving at the back of the carriage, Reilley watched as her chains were attached to the back of the carriage. She wondered just how far they would be going, though she assumed that she would collapse from fatigue before they reached their destination. Not to mention that her feet certainly wouldn’t be able to take days of travelling, the plate boots she wore would help protect them, though it wouldn’t take long before blistered and sores began to form.

The queen leaned back in her carriage with a dark grin, the guardian's downfall occupying her mind as they began the long journey back to Siaraia. She did not think directly of the half-elf again until the procession crawled to a halt less than half a day into their travels.

A low rap on her window stole her attention away, bringing Salem back to the present as she pushed open the glass, seeing the face of the last carriage's driver looking up at her with wide eyes. "She's collapsed, your Majesty," he reported, fear in his face as he awaited her response.

Salem's tongue clicked in disappointment, and her eyes rolled before her lips pursed into a line. "I can't say I'm surprised," she continued, a humored grin replacing her displeasure, "I'm surprised she's lasted this long. Move her into your carriage. Be sure she is guarded and chained at all times." The driver nodded vigorously before disappearing from sight, and within a few moments they were moving again.

After three days on the road, the procession finally reached Siaraia's large, looming gates. Silas, sitting across from the half-elf and guarding her closely, shook the woman awake before nodding to the windows. "We've arrived," he spoke flatly, gesturing to the dark city beyond the glass.

The cobbled streets were lined with Siaraia's populace: men and women dressed to the nines, all with glittering red eyes and ivory fangs. They stood on either side of the procession in the perpetual darkness, watching in near-silent wonder, all seeking a closer peek at the Queen who, for the most part, remained behind her castle walls.

The procession rolled through the square, past the market proper and a large, ornate fountain from which blood flowed freely. They passed the altar: a large marble pedestal upon which a single sliver of light fell: the only sunlight to permeate Siaraia's darkness. No citizens stood here, the streets seeming deserted.

Finally the procession passed through Lasymor's gates, pulling around until the queen's carriage stood just before the door. She descended first, with the aid of one of her servants, and stepped proudly into her home. "Chain our guest in the dungeons. I will visit her when the time is right." She spoke not another word, disappearing into her tower.

{ She'll suck you dry, and still you'll cry, to be back in her bosom, to do it again }
{ She'll make you weep, and moan and cry, to be back in her bosom, to do it again }
{ She'll eat you alive }

The speed that Reilley had to run at to keep up with the carriage to avoid being physically dragged along was uncomfortable and took a lot of effort to keep up with, she managed for a long while, keeping her head down and only thinking about taking the next brisk pace forward. She stumbled more than a few times throughout the journey though she managed to retain her balance until finally, around about half a day into their travels she finally stumbled forward, her eyelid drooping over her eyes as she practically lost consciousness. She was dragged several feet before the carriage finally came to a stop, though at this point her strength had failed her and she was barely conscious. She did however feel somebody drag her onto one of the carriages as she lay lifeless on the ground; she gave zero resistance against the person’s efforts as they moved her, securing her on one side of the carriage with the chains.

The rest of the journey went by fast, mostly because Reilley spent the majority of the time dozing in and out of sleep, unable to do much other than stare at the boy who was now seated opposite her during her waking hours. It was truly shameful that a warrior was so helpless against a child, her wrists were bound, her weapon was either in the hands of that god-forsaken wench or was forgotten on the road somewhere and her spirit was practically broken.

Upon arriving at the destination, Reilley had been in a deep sleep when the strange boy had shook her to wake her, gesturing to the city through the glass as he spoke. Dread filled Reilley as she wondered not only where they were but also what would happen to her now that they had arrived, more specifically, how this woman was planning on making her betray her friend, the guardian of light.

Although she didn’t particularly make an effort to take in the surroundings of the city that passed her, it took only a few glances to see that they passed what Reilley assumed to be the populace of the city as they travelled down the streets. A singular feature could be made out on each and every person they passed by Reilley which truly made her fear for her very existence; the crimson red eyes that both the woman and the boy had adorned each and every face they passed. Was this some sort of feature that this city had? Or was there something more, something evil that lived here and corrupted these people? There was no way of her knowing, though her suspicions made her shiver with fear.

It didn’t take long before Reilley was finally dragged from the carriage and pulled into a large build, a building the young half elf instantly knew to be the prison, the place where she would likely spend the final hours in this world. She was moved into a small cell where she was once again secured with chains and then she was finally left alone as she was forced to await the treatment that would force her to betray her friend.
